THURSDAY NOTICE October 20, 2016 ,, 2016
Message From Mr. Henderson • You will receive your child’s first trimester report tomorrow via email.
Your conference with your child’s LTLA teacher should also be scheduled and confirmed by now. If you haven’t received confirmation of your conference date and time, or if you don’t receive your child’s report by the end of the day tomorrow, please contact Crissy at [email protected]
• There are three major parts to the report. Each of these parts will be a separate attachment in the email you will receive tomorrow. The first part contains the course descriptions and checklists. The course descriptions explain what was taught over the course of this trimester. The checklists show your child’s progress in attaining mastery in specific skills and content taught within the course.
• In addition to checklists for each course, there is also a Work Habits Checklist. This checklist is an important part of the holistic program at Chartwell. It represents on-‐going observations of your child’s “non-‐cognitive” skills, that is, those habits of heart and mind that are foundations for success in school, college, work, and life. Much of the “underground” work of Chartwell teachers involves creating conditions for your child to experience success in growing these habits.
• The second part of the report is the Chartwell Education Plan (CEP). The CEP comes from the core of the Chartwell program, the Language Training and Language Arts (LTLA) class, and shows specific goals and benchmarks for that class. You will meet with your child’s LTLA teacher next week to review and discuss the CEP.
• Finally, you will also receive a document showing the most recent standardized testing data we have for your child. We use this data as an overall benchmark of your child’s progress.
• Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions. I prefer email ([email protected]) or contact Crissy to schedule an appointment with me. Judy Gaughf and I will be attending conferences next week and we look forward to seeing you in person! SMS Text Messages: It is time for Chartwell’s annual renewal of parents “opting in” to receive messages from our School Messenger system. On Friday, you should receive a text message from School Messenger, asking you to opt in to receive messages from us. We plan to use this system for important messages relating to school closing and safety alerts. Additional details are included in the attached flyer. UCSF SEL Project: As part of Chartwell’s ongoing relationship with the Dyslexia Center at UCSF, we are inviting interested families to participate in a research study focused on social emotional learning. In this study, UCSF seeks to examine the affective and cognitive underpinnings of socio-‐emotional constructs such as motivation, grit, resilience, and mindset, with additional specialized focus on stereotype threat and reading anxiety that children with dyslexia may face.

Parents and Guardians You can take advantage of our Text Messaging Service Our school utilizes the SchoolMessenger system to deliver text messages, straight to your mobile phone with important information about events, school closings, safety alerts and more. You can participate in this free service* just by sending a text message of “Y” or “Yes” to our school’s short code number, 67587. You can also opt out of these messages at any time by simply replying to one of our messages with “Stop”. SchoolMessenger is compliant with the Student Privacy PledgeTM, so you can rest assured that your information is safe and will never be given or sold to anyone.
Information on SMS text messaging and Short Codes:
SMS stands for Short Message Service and is commonly referred to as a "text message". Most cell phones support this type of text messaging. Our notification provider, SchoolMessenger, uses a true SMS protocol developed by the telecommunications industry specifically for mass text messaging, referred to as “short code” texting. This method is fast, secure and highly reliable because it is strictly regulated by the wireless carriers and only allows access to approved providers. If you’ve ever sent a text vote for a TV show to a number like 46999, you have used short code texting. *Terms and Conditions – Message frequency varies. Standard message and data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help. Text STOP to
cancel. Mobile carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages. See schoolmessenger.com/txt for more info.
Just send “Y” or “Yes”

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO PARENTAL CONSENT FOR CHILD TO PARTICIPATE IN RESEARCH
Study Title: Cognitive, Affective, and Socio-Emotional Correlates of Reading This is a research study, and you/ your child do not have to participate. The researcher, Fumiko Hoeft, MD, Ph.D or one of the trained on-the-ground contacts will explain this study to you and your child. If you/your child have any questions, you or your child may ask the researcher. Your child is being asked to take part in this study because he/she is a volunteer between the ages of 8-17. In this study, the researchers are doing a survey to learn more about how kids feel about their learning and schooling. They hope to have about 300 participants between the ages of 8 and 17 participate in their survey. What will happen if I participate in this study? If you and your child agree to participate in this study, two things will happen:
1. Your child will complete a survey at his/her school or at home online. The survey asks how they feel, think, and act when they read, take tests, and in general. It will take your child about 20 minutes to complete the survey, although breaks are offered and can be taken. Your child may be asked to take this 20-minute survey again a few weeks later in order to assess stability.
2. Your child will complete a 25-minute task on the computer that will involve focusing on the screen and responding to the direction of certain probes. Your child will be offered a break in the middle of this task.
Are there any risks to my child’s privacy?
In some cases, there is a chance that your child might get tired or feel uncomfortable when filling out the survey. In such cases, your child may stop or take a break at any time. He/she is free to skip any question. We do not anticipate any findings that will concern you, but if we are concerned about something, we will talk to a specialist.
We will do our best to protect the information we collect from your child. Information that identifies your child will be kept secure. The completed surveys will be kept secure and separate from identifying information. Only a small number of researchers will have direct access to completed surveys. If this study is published or presented at scientific meetings, names and other information that might identify you will not be used.
Are there benefits?
You will be kept informed on research results after the assessment. Additionally, your child will receive a small gift.
Read SEL
Can I or my child say “No”?
Yes. Your child does not have to complete the survey or the computerized assessment. If you choose not to be in this study you will not lose any of your regular benefits.
Are there any payments or costs?
You will not be paid for completing the survey. There are no costs to you.
Who can answer my/my child’s questions about the study?
You can talk with the study researcher about any questions, concerns, or complaints you have about this study. Contact the study researcher Fumiko Hoeft at 415-476-9861.
If you wish to ask questions about the study or your rights as a research participant to someone other than the researchers or if you wish to voice any problems or concerns you may have about the study, please call the Office of the Committee on Human Research at 415-476-1814.
CONSENT PARTICIPATION IN RESEARCH IS VOLUNTARY. You have been given copies of this consent form to keep. If you wish to be in this study, please sign below and read the separate assent form document verbally to your child.
