NYUAD Study Away: Current Snapshot

NYUAD students are funded to spend up to two semesters abroad. Anything outside Abu Dhabi is

abroad, e.g. NYUNY is an abroad site for NYUAD students.

Students are generally not permitted to study away during their first year and not encouraged to

study away during their senior year.

About 5-10% of each class will participate in programs extramural to the GNU. Such extramural

program approval is considered extraordinary and given only upon presentation of a compelling

academic rationale.

More than 50% of students are planning to double major. The vast majority of students will have a

minor, a major concentration, and or a multidisciplinary concentration (e.g. urbanization,

environment).

Students are interested in having a combination of major courses and liberal arts electives in each of

their semesters abroad.

NYUAD students must officially declare a major by end of sophomore year.

All students are required to produce a capstone project in their senior year. Students will likely

require capstone project advising during their junior year, even while abroad. Most students will

develop the core of their capstone project by the end of their junior year. They enroll in a capstone

project sequence of two courses over the two semesters of senior year.

Science and engineering students would like to complete the equivalent of 1-2 NYUAD core courses

while abroad.

NYUAD students must enroll in courses required of all study abroad students by the Global

Academic Centers, e.g. Global Readings and foreign language.

NYUAD will have greater capacity to accept NYUNY and NYU Shanghai students into certain majors

after we move to the Saadiyat campus, e.g. film and new media.

Students are concerned about how to remain connected to faculty, mentors, and other students

while abroad, e.g. first year students don’t want to be abroad in the spring of their junior year

because they will miss the graduation of the senior class!

NYUAD and NYUNY also serve as inbound sites and must meet the needs particular to study abroad

students.

Global Network Paths for NYUAD Majors

NYUAD deans and faculty have identified site preferences within the GNU for NYUAD majors with an eye toward developing students as well rounded scholars of the liberal arts and sciences, highly competent producers of knowledge in a field of specialization, and socially responsible members of any community they choose to join. Key factors for selecting site preferences include the following:

1. Connecting majors to existing site strengths and local assets. This includes considering

current and projected GNU site strength and capacity over time

the availability or likelihood of availability of local facilities (e.g. laboratories)

collaborating with renowned local research institutions or projects through the local sites and new NYU centers of research excellence

teaming with outstanding site faculty on courses or undergraduate research projects

the availability of or possibility for local internships in pre-professional settings or research projects in labs for majors

developing collaborative teaching and research projects with stellar departments of local universities (e.g. Paris I—with which we are already collaborating on visiting faculty.)

NYUAD faculty mobility opportunities at the site and in relation to coordination of course offerings

2. Developing students as scholars in their fields of specialization. This includes incorporating what students study abroad into

the sequence of knowledge and skill development within the major specific to their semester abroad (e.g. Ordinary Differential Equations in second semester sophomore year for engineering students.)

training for discipline-specific research (e.g. methods of inquiry, fieldwork, laboratory work) or creative production in the arts

the possibility of taking or staging courses that explore important interdisciplinary questions related to the major (environmental engineering, environmental economics, art restoration and chemistry)

the availability of direct enrollment courses at outstanding local universities (using existing relationships and examining new possibilities through the sites)

preparation for capstone projects (e.g. data collection, pilot projects, comparative work, access to archives and collections)

strategic positioning for graduate school and prestigious fellowships (e.g. a semester at Courant)

Page 5: Draft: November 2012 - NYU · 2020-06-23 · Draft: November 2012 . 1 ... NYUAD Study Away: Current Snapshot 2 2. Global Network University Paths for NYUAD Majors 3 Arab Crossroads

3. Developing students as well-rounded scholars and global citizens within the liberal arts and sciences tradition.

Offering liberal arts and sciences core course experiences abroad that continue to explore “big questions” from a global perspective while placing those perspectives into specific local context

Providing students with a broader range of electives across the liberal arts and sciences than is possible at NYUAD alone.

Guiding students through courses, co-curricular activity, and experiential learning opportunities toward developing greater intercultural understanding toward social responsibility:

o how to create social ties across difference, including recognizing boundaries and deference behaviors common to the community students are engaging.

o developing the language and socio-linguistic behaviors needed in that community to create social ties, navigate boundaries and apply deference behaviors.

o how to access, elicit, interpret, and generate knowledge with ethical intelligence within the culture(s) of that community.

o how to respect a variety of knowers and ways of knowing in the host community, i.e. appreciating and applying epistemological diversity.

o how to reflect critically on their own positionality (e.g. personal identity, socio-cultural identity, political identity).

o how to foster and convey empathy in the face of difference. o how to hold the tension of the opposites within formal and informal community

contexts to create a safe and productive space for dialogue.

4. Supporting enrollment management needed for robust circulation of students within the GNU portal campuses, Global Academic Centers and GNU Research Centers.

ASSUMPTIONS:

Best semesters for study abroad are junior fall and senior fall.

Students should be at NYUAD in spring of junior year to work with faculty on capstone project idea development by way of the capstone seminar and take upper division major courses.

Students should take the Foundations of Science sequence (6 courses), Calculus, and Multivariable Calculus before going abroad.

Students could take junior fall abroad free of biology requirements.

Students who wish to spend a second term abroad, normally in senior fall, should develop a proposal that justifies the second semester away with respect to students’ academic vision and should be geared towards a Capstone project or other academic endeavor related to the GNU site they are proposing to visit. NYUAD faculty will provide help and advice on how to prepare a proposal.

There is more flexibility for study abroad than perhaps meets the eye. Students are encouraged to work carefully with their faculty mentors.

Assumptions:

It is recommended that students use sophomore spring term for study away to explore the breadth of the GNU liberal arts curriculum, rather than focusing on completing courses required for the economics major. We strongly recommend that required courses for the major be taken in Abu Dhabi.

Alternatively, students may wish to spend a single term abroad in junior year to take advantage of economics electives offered elsewhere.

To be eligible for advanced economics electives (300-level courses) in NYUNY, students will need to have completed Mathematics for the Social Sciences, Introduction to Econometrics, Advanced or Intermediate Microeconomics, Advanced or Intermediate Macroeconomics, and Statistics and Probability for Social Sciences. This is difficult to accomplish for students who are away in sophomore year.

Students who wish to spend a term abroad in spring of sophomore year should complete at least four of the courses required for the major before they leave.

Students wish to spend a second term abroad, normally in spring of junior year, should develop a proposal that justifies the second semester away with respect to students’ academic vision and should be geared towards a Capstone Project or other academic endeavor related to the GNU site they are proposing to visit. NYUAD faculty will provide help and advice on how to prepare a proposal.

The proposal for a second term away will be evaluated by a faculty committee; funding for proposals is competitive.

Students may not be able to complete five core courses before going abroad in sophomore spring semester and should take one or two core courses while abroad.
