This proposal explains why I’ve chosen to undertake
an in-depth research of what goes on under the ‘Big
Top’ at a Circus. This will be done by gathering enough
research about the subject and through the exploration
and the application of sub topic such as:
Balance and Magic
Circus Type & DesignPerformers & Working Environment

As my rst steps of research and investigation I’ve looked
into Drop-In-Classes at ‘CIRCOMEDIA’.
They are currently running two drop-in-classes; STATIC-
TRAPEZE (mixed ability) and MIXED AERIAL – SupervisedTraining Session. They sound like very relax classes where
the tutor will be on hand to help and you can share
your learning on an informal basis.
This new experience will give me an inside to some of
the creative and technical skills needed to be part ofthe ‘Big Top’. On the other hand explore the relationship
between Circus Design and the public.

LOGIC OF NOTHING
Welcome to the world of Oscar Bofn; a slightly obsessive
compulsive hoarder, inventor and a man who has lled
his home with gadgets and contraptions, to make his life
easier (or harder, depending on how well they work).
Logic of Nothing is a Heath Robinson/Rube Goldberginspired piece of non-verbal Circus-Theatre. An
exploration into a relationship between man, circus and
contraption using a blend of clown, juggling, magic and
invention, all set to a unique live soundtrack and samples
taken from the contraptions themselves. Here’s a sneaky
peak of what you can expect!

I started by making a ‘To Do List’ to guide me through a list
of 10-processes/ methods that I’m interested in learning
more about or exploring for the rst time, and a list of
10-topic/ themes that I was interested to research more
in depth. As the rst step of the research development
process I made simple typographical outcomes for the
10-topics/ themes.

After creating the outcome for the topics, I chose to
develop my work further by choosing ‘THEME PARK’ and
exploring the topic further trough a paper ‘Installation’.
I’ve always wanted to work on a big scale installation
that implement working with lighting, shadows and
reexion. So as an initial practice outcome I created the
outline of a wheel and decided to cut it out and make
a mini card-installation.
My inspiration for this outcome is a book I bought this
week called ‘Swoon’ by Caledonia Curry. She’s well
know for her life-size prints and gural paper cut-outs
which she has pasted in the streets and galleries all over
the world for the last ten years. Her work is beautiful, delicate, simple but ephemeral. On the right you can
some of her work, she has also work on theme park
previously so it was a nice coincidence to see some of
her work.

an exhibition of a Large Light Installation by Squidsoup.

‘The rst ferris wheel was designed by George W.
Ferris, a bridge-builder from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Ferris began his career in the railroad industry and then
pursued an interest in bridge building. He understood the
growing need for structural steel, Ferris founded G.W.G.
Ferris & Co. in Pittsburgh, a rm that tested and inspected
metals for railroads and bridge builders.
He built the Ferris Wheel for the 1893 World’s Fair, which
was held in Chicago to commemorate the 400th
anniversary of Columbus’s landing in America. The
Chicago Fair’s organizers wanted something that would
rival the Eiffel Tower. Gustave Eiffel had built the towerfor the Paris World’s Fair of 1889, which honored the
100th anniversary of the French Revolution.’

After doing some experiments on ‘Theme Parks’ through
some of the process in my list, I decided to start looking
at the looking at the subject from a broader perspective.
Including: Arcades, Amusement Parks, Circus, Carnival
and Travelling Funfairs.
As there is a temporary ‘Circus’ near Temple Meads
called ‘Creative Common’, I had just spent an evening
watching one of their performances called ‘Don’t Drinkand Dance’. So I decided to start focusing more on this
aspect of the subject and develop further research.
So my initial thoughts emphases on‘Circus Language’ and images that
dene a ‘Circus’.

1. Hi, my name is Patricia. Lets start by asking what’s
your name and what do you do?
2. What’s your job description
here?
3. What are the main attributes that you think defines
the circus?
5. How do you think digital technology has affected
the circus?
4. What is you earliest memories
of circus?
6. Does the ‘Creative Common’
travel around?
8. Are there any words in the circus
that we would usually not use?
10. Do you believe in magic?
11. Last but not least, if you had
the talents what would you be for
24 hours?
Thank you for your help and input, I will be back to
watch some of your other performances.
9. Where do you see the circus life in 10-20 years?
7. What’s the hierarchy of the circus? Who runs it?
M. My name is MARIETTA COOKBRIDE, I am PRODUCTIONSASSISTANT here at Creative Common.
M. Job role is very broad, sort of have aPRODUCING ROLE, and ADMIN ROLE also.
It also involves doing COORDINATING
OF THE VARIOUS TICKET OUTLETS, bit of
box OFFICE MANAGEMENT as we have
a box ofce on site. Also do PERSONAL
ASSISTANT WORK FOR THE DIRECTOR OF
THE SITE. (ESTHER O’CALLAGHAN).
M. A lot of people that can do a very broad range
of different things, BRISTOL CITY CIRCUS is being curatedby the INVISIBLE CIRCUS, and so although the are Invisible
Circus there is a lot of them and their organisation, who are
also involved in the production type of things, they do a lot of
PERFORMING. And production, tech and everything.
M. In terms of marking in a big way as we have been able to
get out POSTERS AND ADVERTS MUCH CHEAPER… (Windy)
CIRCUS PERFORMANCE IS SUCH A VISCERAL TECHNICALSTYLE OF PERFORMANCE, you can’t catch that in technology,
as you have to be there is see it and appreciate it. People train
for years and years the PRECISION is EXTRAORDINARY.
M. I suppose going with my family, but
a different kind of Circus, the one you
go to and sit and have ‘CANDY FLOSS’ like the ‘Mosco State Circus’, circus is a
different type of thing.
M. Creative common is more of a
TEMPORARY EVENT SPACE AND THENTHE INVISIBLE CIRCUS IS BASED INBRISTOL. But the circus festival that
we have had here we have seen a lot of
festivals over the UK and Europe and
those Circus travel.
M.EXPERIMENTAL, veryTRADITIONAL
but circus here is very differentBREAKING BOUNDARIES and trying to
do different things, experimental arts are
part of it.
‘I BELIEVE IN VERY WELLDONE TRICKERY.’
M. On a slack line RIDING A UNI-CYCLE, as I think it is amazing and
incredible, amazing BALANCE, justextraordinary.
M. Its become a much more STEREO-TYPE, a lot of circus are
BREAKING DOWN a lot, more ARTS FUNDING, bring the gap
between them in the future we will see a lot more funded stuff.
M. There are several different organisations, with ‘CREATIVE
COMMON’. Circus media of the board, this is because it is a
limited company that is PUBLICLY FUNDED. There is a board
of trusties, big bosses and then underneath that, the director who
is part of that. Then beyond that there is a production manager,
then all of the guys that work on technology here, electricians
on site, quite a hazy hierarchy.

On the previous page you can see a transcript conversation with
Marietta Cookbride who is the Production Assistant at ‘Creative
Common’. First of all I apologise for not being able to provide
the voice recording as requested by the interviewee. On the
other hand it wasn’t the best recording as the interview was
unexpected and it was a windy day. As I was picking my friend
up from the Temple Meads train station I decided to try my luck,
by knock on the backdoor of ‘Creative Common’. Marietta was
very friendly and welcoming to have a short conversation about
her job role and the questions I prepared. Below you can also see
a series of questions I wrote before narrowing it down to shorter

As ‘Creative Common’ ends
on the 3rd November I’m
planning to speak to the
creative and professional
people that work at
‘Circomedia’. I will be
engaging in classes with
other people that interested
in learning new skills.

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/draft-proposal-magic-circle 22/28
So nearly at the end of my preparation for self directed
project, with one more outcome to do. This time looking
at a ‘Newspaper Article’ related to my subject, as there
weren’t many more articles that linked to ‘Circuses’ I
picked ‘Theme Parks – Crazy Rides’.
After doing some research into ‘Crazy Rides’ I decidedto base my last outcome on the thrill of being on rides.
This is because I kept coming across words and images
that show ‘adrenaline’ and ‘emotions’. Imagine if we
could feel the same way in our daily life. To show this
I decided to take some photographs and play around
with drawings and layering the images. The idea behindthe photographs expressions is to show the emotions of
being on a ride whilst on your daily life routine.

This year I want to get the most from the facilities
at university and create outcome from methods I
haven’t tried before. I still want to incorporate and keep
experimenting with screen-printing and laser cutting. Asof yet I can’t say what my nal outcome(s) are going
to be but I would like to work on a large (paper/ light)
‘Installation’. Through my work I want to learn more
about typography and print design. After Graduation I
would like to work for a Branding or Advertising Agency
for a couple of years but I’m open to see where theself-directed project takes me.
After doing all my research in the last few weeks and
creating several outcomes I can condently say I canexplore the phrase ‘Magic Circle’. I will do this through
different research methods, such as:
– Circus Classes at ‘Circomedia’ and attending other performances
– Contacting other Circuses for more information– Do research into agencies I would like to work for after Graduation.
