ProtagonistsIn the beginning of the book, Ping is a slave. She doesn't know her name, her age, or who her parent's are. She works for the lazy and cruel Master Lan, who neglects her. Her job was to take care of the last imperial dragons in the Han Empire. At first she regards them as rather useless animals, but later on begins to feel their power and significance. When Ping was very young, her parents sold her to Master Lan, as they did not have enough money to take care of her.In the book, Ping is described as a young girl that has dark brown hair. The only clothes she has is a gold colored Kimono. Throughout their dangerous adventure to the Ocean, the dragon, Long Danzi, helps her discover who she really is, her destiny as a dragon keeper.

Danzi is one of the last imperial dragons in the Han Empire. In the beginning of the book, his wife, Lu Yu, dies, leaving him to be the last. Inside his den, he keeps hidden a mysterious dragon stone, that later is found out to be an egg. Lu Yu’s and his baby.Long Danzi is about 3 men long. In the sunlight, his scales are greenish-blue. He has two long horns and has extremely sharp teeth. He is a very old dragon, therefore, he needs to cross the Ocean to get to the Isle of Blest, where there is the water of life. He claims he must go there otherwise he will die.

AntagonistDiao is the dragon hunter, that the emperor sent after to find Danzi and Ping. He is determined to kill the dragon and take his body. As he tries to find Danzi and kill him, he also wants to take the dragon stone. The necromancer is also working with Diao to get the dragon stone, as he has an evil plan.Both Diao and the Necromancer are men. The book didn’t say any detail on how they looked, except that they both had evil plans. But during their hunt for the dragon, they both get killed by Ping’s “Qi” skills.

ConflictIn the beginning of the book, Ping is a slave. She doesn't know her name, her age, or who her parent's are. She thinks her parents sold her because she wasn’t worthy, but they sold her because they didn’t have enough money to take care of her. Therefore, she believes she is not worthy of having a name. She also thinks that she is a useless person in the world, but later Danzi helps her find out what her true destiny is.

mountain, laid a palace. This palace was where Ping, the imperial dragons, and Master Lan lived.

• Master Lan is a fake dragon keeper, who is lazy and doesn’t take care of the dragons, forcing the slave girl to.

• Long Danzi and his wife Lu Yu, are the last imperial dragons in the Han Empire

• One of the imperial dragons, Lu Yu, die.

• Turns the dead dragon into a sour pickle

• Pickle is served at banquet, where the emperor has been invited. The slave girl accidentally leaks the pickle is made out of dragon.

• She finds herself asking the dragon for help, and the two escape

• A necromancer and a dragon hunter are hunting the slave girl and Danzi

• They take with them a mysterious stone with them

• Slave girl finds out her name: Ping, and her destiny: dragon keeper

• They reach Chang’an, but have been put in a cage, luckily Ping and Danzi escape

• Finally reach the Ocean

• Ping accidentally drops precious stone

• Baby Purple dragon pops out

• Danzi starts his journey across the ocean to get to the Isle of Blest

• Leaves Ping with the responsibility of taking care of the baby dragon.

• Danzi names the baby Long Kai Duan which means “The Beginning”

CommentaryDragon Keeper is one of the best books I have ever read. It never occurred to me to stop reading. I just kept going and going. The thing that mostly kept me concentrated was how the author could explain in much detail, the experience Ping went through of learning so much wise information from Danzi. Since the beginning of the book, Ping has never really appreciated life. She never had much experience in anything, mainly because she was a slave. Even I myself, have learned new things from the wise dragon. I learnt about looking in different perspectives, knowing the values of life, and having responsibilities. I started to understand more about myself and why other people do things the way they do it. I think I relate a bit more to Ping then to Danzi, beause I’m still young and have a lot to learn. I think the moral of this book was to never in your life, look down on yourself. Even though sometimes you may fail, its not the end of the world. Keep trying and believing in yourself. “You said when life knocks you down, you can chose whether or not to get back up.” – The Karate Kid.
