Jose Siri’s Streak Jose Siri produced a Midwest League record 39-game hitting streak that began with the first game of the second half on June 22 and ended on August 4. On July 31, Siri broke the 40-year-old Midwest League of 35 straight games set by Waterloo’s Tony Toups in 1977. He broke the streak on an 0-2 pitch in his final at-bat of the game at Fort Wayne. After going 14 straight games with a hit within the first five innings from July 15-July 30, he went down to his final at-bat three times in the final four games of the streak. Siri batted .341 with 13 home runs and 32 RBI, 12 doubles, 3 triples, 8 stolen bases, and a .671 slugging percentage during the streak. Siri hit .461 on balls in play during the streak. On July 14, he broke the team record of 20 set by Carlos Mendez in 2009. Siri also had a 50-game on-base streak from June 15-August 12 that was the longest in Minor League Baseball this season. Siri’s hitting streak received tremendous media attention throughout the region and over all of Minor League Baseball, including video highlights on Reds television broadcasts and radio replays on the Reds Radio Network. How He Extended the Steak (His First Hit of the Game): 1st Inning: 11 times (2 home runs; first pitch of the game on July 26 at Lansing) 2nd Plate Appearance: 10 times 3rd Plate Appearance: 9 times 4th Plate Appearance: 6 times 5th Plate Appearance: 3 times Last At-Bat: 6 times including the MWL record-breaker and 3 of the last 4 games Home Runs to Extend the Streak: 7 (twice in 1st inning) Infield Hits to Extend the Streak: 9 Most Unlikely Extension of the Streak: On July 4 at Bowling Green, Siri was 0 for 4 over the first eight innings and was due up seventh in the ninth inning. On that night, the Dragons had only three hits over the first eight innings, but they got Siri to the plate in the ninth and he delivered a solid single to right field to extend the streak to 12. Most Dramatic Extension of the Streak: On July 31, Siri was sitting on 35 straight games, having tied the league record the previous day. In his first three at-bats on July 31, he struck out swinging. In his fourth at-bat, he quickly fell behind 0-2, fouled off two pitches, and then delivered a single to left field to break the league record. The End of the Line…and Lots of Controversy: Siri went 0 for 3 with a walk vs. the Great Lakes Loons on August 4 as his streak came to an end, amid controversy and bitter feelings at Fifth Third Field. After a ground out, strikeout, and fly out in his first three at-bats, Siri came to the plate for the final time in the 8th inning with one out and the bases empty. Having extended his streak in his last at-bat in three of the last four games, Siri hoped to push the streak to 40. The first pitch from Loons pitcher Ryan Moseley came in behind Siri, resulting in umpires warning both benches. The second pitch was well inside as Siri tried to get a bunt down and fouled the ball. The third pitch came in directly at Siri and he backed away. Though Siri did offer at two pitches as he tried to keep the streak alive, the Loons arguably did not throw him a strike in the at-bat. The last two pitches came in above the left-handed batters box and Siri drew a walk to end the streak as a chorus of boos from the fans showered down toward the Loons dugout and manager Jeremy Rodriguez. Both benches and bullpens cleared and players rushed onto the field as the Dragons were clearly frustrated with the actions of Moseley, though there was no physical contact and no ejections. Player of the Month: Dayton’s Jose Siri has been selected as the Midwest League Player of the Month for July. For the month, he appeared in al l 28 Dragons games and batted .344 with 10 home runs and 21 runs batted in. He led the Midwest League in home runs, hits (43), slugging percentage (.680), extra-base hits (19) and total bases (85). His 85 total bases led the league by 22.

Manager/Coaches: Luis Bolivar is in his first season as Dragons manager after serving as the Dayton hitting coach for the past three seasons. Bolivar played for the Dragons in 2003-’04, representing the club in the Midwest League All-Star Game in 2004. Bolivar played professionally for nine seasons from 2002-2010, spending all but the final year of his career in the Reds organization. He spent all or parts of four seasons at the Triple-A level, but never played in the big leagues. Bolivar resides in the Dayton suburb of Vandalia with his wife and four children. Following his playing career, he served as a coach at Vandalia-Butler High School. Bolivar was selected as the “Best Manager Prospect” in Baseball America’s 2017 Best Tools survey of Midwest League managers. Pitching coach Derrin Ebert returns to the Dragons for his second season as pitching coach in 2017 and sixth year in the Reds organization. Ebert spent the 2012-13 seasons with the AZL Reds in Goodyear and was with the Billings Mustangs for the 2014-15 seasons. Ebert pitched professionally from 1994-2005, appearing briefly in the Major Leagues with the Atlanta Braves in 1999. He also pitched in the Royals, Diamondbacks, Cubs, Brewers, and Red Sox organizations. Ebert had a speaking role in the blockbuster baseball movie, Moneyball. Hitting coach Daryle Ward joins the Dragons for the first time after serving as the hitting coach for the AZL Reds in 2016. Ward spent 11 years in the Major Leagues with the Astros, Dodgers, Pirates, Nationals, Braves, and Cubs. He belted a career high 20 home runs for Houston in 2000. He is the son of former MLB All-Star Gary Ward. Bench coach Kevin Mahar joins the Dragons for the first time in 2017. He is in his fourth season as a coach in the Reds organization after spending the 2013-14

seasons at Billings and 2015 at Advanced-A Daytona. He worked in private business in 2016.

The Dragons MVP Program The Dragons expanded elementary school MVP Program reaches five counties and more than 1,100 classrooms. Schools in Montgomery, Greene, Clark, Miami and Warren counties are part of the program that includes 1,116 fourth and fifth grade classrooms in 183 schools over 48 school districts. About 34,000 children will participate. The program is in its 12th year in 2017. Due to the support of the participating sponsors, the program is completely free of charge to the schools. How does the Dragons School MVP Program work? The teacher in each of the 1,116 classrooms over the five-county area will select five MVP’s based on the teacher’s judgment of performance, effort, citizenship, and improvement. The five MVPs selected by their teacher in each classroom will get four tickets to a Dragons game, tickets to a special Field Day event at the stadium during the season, an MVP certificate and a Dragons MVP hat. Dragons players and mascots visit selected classrooms over the course of the season. Additionally, 12 Dragons games during the season are designated as “MVP Game Nights.” On those nights, one MVP gets to throw out the ceremonial first pitch to the game, another does an on-air interview during the Dragons game broadcast on Fox Sports 980, and another participates in an entertainment skit during the Dragons game. Two times each season, all classroom MVP’s are invited to attend the Dragons MVP Field Day at Fifth Third Field and interact with Dragons players. The Dragons MVP Program presented by Bob Evans is also made possible by the generous support of Sinclair Community College, WDTN TV and Dayton’s CW Television.
