Cable Selection B.S.5839• B.S. 5839:1988
• Pliable Cable to B.S.7629 OR
• Mineral cable to B.S.6207
• B.S.5839:2002
• “Standard” Cable to Clause 26.d, OR
• “Enhanced” Cable to Clause 26.e
Enhanced Installation Requirements
• Particular building types in which cables are required to operate longer because of multi-phase evacuation.
• Unsprinklered buildings greater than 30m in height.• Buildings containing Critical signal paths serving areas
where people may remain for a period during a fire.• Buildings where Designers/Specifiers consider an
Enhanced performance is required on the basis of a Fire Risk Assessment
POWER SUPPLY REQUIREMENTS
• B.S.5839 Clause 26.2b: Cables for all parts of the critical signal path and for the final circuit providing low voltage mains supply to the system should be “Standard” or “Enhanced”, and be comprised of one of the four fire performance cables specified .
Other Issues B.S. 5839
• Data Transmission Requirement
• System Requirements
B.S.5839 Data Transmission• ……the electrical characteristics of all
cables, such as voltage drop, current carrying capacity, impedance and, where appropriate, ability to transmit data, should be suitable for the system.
• No objective criteria are defined• Debate continues• Some proposals are unrealistic
System TestingSystem Testing
B.S.5839-1, now requires that where employed ,through joints should have equal performance to the Alarm cable.
