The faculty has trulychallenged me to gobeyond the classroom andthe coursework. Instead ofmemorizing the material, I have had to apply it.They also have challenged me to step out of mycomfort zone and to do things that I never thoughtI would have done.
SUCCESSScored in top percentile for high quality andeffective learning experiences by the NationalStudy of Student Engagement, a survey inwhich students rate their academic experience.
Ranked as a “best value” in higher educationby both U.S.News & World Report and Barron’sBest Buys in College Education.
Ranked as a “best value” for academicquality and affordability by Kiplinger’sPersonal Finance magazine.
Consistently ranked among the topMidwestern colleges and universities byU.S.News & World Report.
DRAKE’S FACULTY MEMBERS WORK HARD TO INVOLVE THEMSELVESWITH STUDENTS ON A PERSONAL LEVEL — BOTH IN THE CLASSROOMAS TEACHERS AND OUT OF THE CLASSROOM AS MENTORS.
FUELING DESIRES: Restore prairie grasses
for biology class. Design a business plan
for a local restaurant. Study renaissance
art in Italy. Drake’s diverse academic
opportunities will engage, change and
challenge your mind in an active and
supportive environment — and they won’t
confine you to the classroom. You will
acquire knowledge by testing and
practicing it on campus and in the real
world. You will learn and work with other
students and faculty in a variety of
settings, from small classes and laborato-
ries to e-mail discussions and seminars in
other countries.
You will get your hands dirty, your
assumptions challenged and your mind
opened to new perspectives and
opportunities. You will learn by doing. In
the process, you will equip yourself
to succeed in your own way in a fast-
moving world.
LEARN FROM THE BEST: More than 95
percent of Drake’s faculty hold the highest
degrees in their field. And they — not
teaching assistants — are the ones who
will teach and inspire you. You’ll be guided
by professors who hand out their home
telephone numbers on the first day of
class. They will interact with you inside
and outside of the classroom. They’ll be
there to support you — not only during
your college years, but as friends
and mentors who will celebrate your
achievements long after the ink is dry on
your diploma.
STIMULATING AND RELEVANT CLASSES
– PHARMACY MAJOR TODD THUC PHAM
HIT THE GROUND RUNNINGTHE DRAKE CURRICULUM, a general education
curriculum required of all undergraduates, gives
you diverse choices across 10 academic areas of
inquiry. In your first year, you will work with your
faculty advisor to create a rigorous, individualized
plan to help you achieve your educational and
career goals. If you’re undecided on your major,
the Drake Curriculum will give you a taste of
different disciplines while helping you fulfill
academic requirements. As part of the Drake
Curriculum, all first-year students choose a First-
Year Seminar. These interactive, interdisciplinary
courses will immediately engage you in topics
such as globalization, genetics, alternative
medicine, poverty, extraterrestrial intelligence,
and race in film and fiction. In most First-Year
Seminars, students also live on the same
residence hall floor together.
The Honors Program is designed for qualified
students who seek challenging, discussion-based
courses on interdisciplinary and topical issues as
well as learning experiences outside class.
Honors classes are small and span several
disciplines and approaches to learning.
GLOBAL THINKING: The Drake University Language
Acquisition Program (DULAP) offers a unique
approach to language studies. Through the
customized, one-on-one sessions of DULAP’s
Directed Independent Language Study (DILS)
program, the Language Across the Curriculum
(LAC) program and Drake’s study abroad program,
students have the opportunity to design their own
approach to language acquisition.
Drake University’s Center for Global Citizenship
prepares students for responsible global citizenship,
teaches them to function effectively in different
cultural contexts and see their own culture from
the perspective of others. Through academic
programming, faculty development, international
initiatives and community outreach, the Center
ensures that global perspectives and issues are an
integral part of the intellectual and cultural expe-
rience of all members of the Drake community.

shops, whatever your pastime pleasure,
Des Moines can fill the order. And Des
Moines will welcome your ideas, abilities

art museum and the annual Des Moines
Art Festival, which is ranked among the
top fine art festivals in the country.
CAREER CONNECTIONS: Our location in the
political and business hub of Iowa, coupled
with the University’s reputation in the
community, makes Drake a resource that area
employers rely on when filling internships
and jobs. Drake faculty students have built
strong and lasting relationships with area
businesses. Local business leaders and
governmental agencies play an active role in
the Drake educational experience by visiting
campus as guest lecturers, involving them-
selves in experiential learning exercises
and becoming mentors to students. These
opportunities and Des Moines’ welcoming
environment are why more than 17,600
Drake alumni chose to live and work in Des
