William Lloyd celebrates 50years of excellence“At William Lloyd Pri-mary School we alwaysstrive to create a com-fortable and progressivelearning environmentfor our young learners,”says principal PieterLourens.
William Lloyd this yearcelebrates its 50th anniver-sary.
This school was initiallyknown as Langvlei Prima-ry School near Paarl Sta-tion.
The school was laternamed after the well-known Reverend WilliamLloyd, who together withhis wife played a signifi-cant role in the educationalhistory of Paarl.
William Lloyd PrimarySchool’s doors opened in1965 and since then about 25 000 learners havewalkedthroughitsdoorways.PietieSwartzwasthefirstprincipalatLangvleiPrimary, followedby the legendary David Samaai, who laid thefoundation for holistic excellence, academical-ly, culturally and sport-wise at the school.
Samaai was succeeded by JC Daniels in 1987,who went on early retirement in 1996 and wasthen followed by the current principal Lourens, whothroughhisinvolvementinthecommunityis an example to the rest of the staff and the driv-ing force behind a dedicated staff.
The Paarl Valley Eisteddfod, which was start-edbySamaai,wasbornatWilliamLloyd.Underhis reign in 1982 the status of William Lloyd waschanged from Afrikaans to parallel medium. The school became a landmark and for that rea-
son all Boland PrimarySchool sports meetingswere held at the school, notto mention the start of ten-nis and drum majorettes.
During 2014 this schoolproudly opened the DavidSamaai Tennis Academy, honouring a worthy princi-pal and tennis legend.
“In 2010 we started ourpre-primary on ownsteam,” says Lourens.
Thepre-primary learnersgrew into three classesfunded by the Departmentof Education.
The school also realisedthatmanylearnersarefromdisadvantaged areas, andthey thus established a feed-ing scheme as they believethat children with emptystomachs will not be able toconcentrate behind their
desks.During 2012 a tennis court was built and the
school’s multi-purpose sport facility was up-graded through Lotto funds. In 2014 the schoolacquired their own means of transport.
“Many role models in athletics, aquatics, chess, cross country, drum majorettes, hockey, rugby, netball, cricket, tennis and table tennishad their talents identified and developed atWilliam Lloyd,” says Lourens proudly.
In 2000 they received an award as South Afri-ca’s top Primary School.
“We will always be grateful to our predeces-sors who laid the corner stones of our fineschool. And we thank our present staff for theircontributions to a school of excellence,” con-cluded Lourens.
In front are David Samaai (former princi-pal) and current principal Pieter Lourens. With them is teacher John Fredericks, whowas one of the children in the first classat William Lloyd when English was startedat the school.
Boland Summer FestivalSince the Boland Summer Festival’s incep-tion in 2000, the festival has lived up to everyaspect of its name and is still the mostsought-after festival of its kind in the Bo-land.

ning will be displayed, and live entertain-ment, various sports events and much moreare on offer.

SSttaarr SSiiggnnssStar Signs22 December to21 JanuaryCAPRICORN
Your mental processes are speeded up now. You grasp new conceptsvery easily, but you tend to be impatient with slower minds or theusual, predictable routine. This is a good time to schedule social
activities or even business meetings where tact and friendliness wouldbe a plus. You act as a diplomat and harmonizer between people
with differing viewpoints.
21 January To20 FebruaryAQUARIUS
It may seem that circumstances, other people, or the wholeworld is against you today! You feel overwhelmed by
demands, outside pressures, or your responsibilities andyou are looking at your life with serious doubt or
pessimism. Others don't seem to help, even if they try to;solitary activity or reflection is called for now.
20 February to21 MarchPISCES
What occurs now makes you more aware of what you need, feel, andwant in your relationships. If you are unhappy in your personal life, this
is brought out now, and you'll need to face what is causing yourdissatisfaction. Differences in personal style, tastes, and ways of
expressing affection may emerge. You also feel amorous and loving and,if your personal life is going well, this is a time to really appreciate it.
21 March to21 AprilARIES
The emphasis is now on long-range financial planning, thinking aboutfuture security, and formulating strategies to achieve your ambitions.Your ability to study quietly, to concentrate on complex mental work, and to think deeply about serious matters is much better than usual.
This is a good time to organize your affairs and also to seekprofessional advice about your concerns.
21 April to21 MayTAURUS
A nonstop flow of communication between yourself andthe people in your immediate environment is likely today.
You may engage in interesting and informativediscussions or fritter your time away in inconsequentialchatter and gossip. Mental curiosity or restlessness may
also impel you to take a short trip or visit.
22 June to23 JulyCANCER
You are highly ambitious, full of optimism and enthusiasm for newenterprises and plans. In fact, you may be foolishly overconfident andtake on more challenges than you can really meet. You are inclined totake physical risks, gamble, speculate, and to act on faith and belief inyourself. This can, in fact, be a very productive time for you if you can
keep your expectations within reasonable bounds.
21 May to22 JuneGEMINI
This is a good time to travel, especially to places you've neverexperienced before, where you will be exposed to new ideas and
different ways of looking at the world. Studying new concepts is alsofavored; your ability to understand abstract ideas and your desire togrow intellectually is strong now. Anything that broadens your world
appeals to you at this time.
23 Julie to24 AugustLEO
Today you feel less competitive and ambitious about practical andmundane matters. The world of imagination, fantasy, art, music, ormysticism is very appealing to you now, and if you have talent in any
of these areas, this can be a creative and fruitful time for you. However, the negative possibilities for you now are beingundisciplined, slack, indefinite, or wasting time and energy.
24 August to23 SeptemberVIRGO

23 September to23 OctoberLIBRA
This is a time to get others' opinions and feedback aboutyourself and what you are doing. Relationships of all types
are activated now and cooperation, compromise, andadjustments to others' viewpoints are key issues that requireyour attention. You may come into contact with a person who
is especially creative or influential in your life.

Ek het oor jare as sakeman ge-sien hoe besighede ’n swaknaam kry as gevolg van on-eerlike besigheid.
By groot en gereelde kliënte is persoon-
like aandag veral belangrik.Bel of stuur vir so ’n persoon ’n geluk-
