Our Mission

If to educate is to “Draw Out”, then this is precisely what the Arts are designed to do; stimulate a child’s active imagination: give young senses objects worthy of attracting them, involve awakening emotions with the beautiful and good; and lead growing intellects to grasp, pleasurably, the truth. At Student Theatre, this is done under wisely controlled conditions and in a way calculated to give students the kind of quality of experience to which they can fully respond, so that they will live these experiences over and over again.

In order to do this, we must encourage creativity and give the child freedom of choice in our presentation of activities. We must foster the development of independence by providing children with opportunities to accomplish tasks on their own and encourage their achievements. The child will develop an independence and awareness of his ability to think and judge for himself.

No effort is too great if it results in one hour of beauty, laughter, joy and singular excitement. Producing Art then, is not just a matter of “putting on a skit” or drawing pictures; with such an attitude any activity is as good as lost.

Our main objective is to provide a program which promotes the development of the whole child. We must be aware of what level of development each child is functioning at and gear our expectation of the child appropriately. The greatest service which we can do for our children is to help them develop the abilities to adapt to change. In this way, they will be able to function successfully in whatever situation they find themselves.

We aim to have each child develop his or her potential in the following areas:

Values

Participating in theatre training is one of the most rewarding experiences a young person can have. The director and other adults care about your child’s future and want to invest time and energy into his or her development.

The Arts celebrate many diverse disciplines. Theatre provides young people with many valuable developmental opportunities: drama, music and dance introduce basic performing arts; the design and creation of sets, costumes and props integrate visual arts; rehearsing and practicing dialogue develops speech and language; integrating sound and lighting explores technology.

Having your child participate in theatre has little to do with creating a “star”. The objective is to provide children with opportunities to develop social skills, learn life lessons and develop self concept.

Some things to remember to keep from being a “stage parent” and to remind your child, so that the experience is positive and pressure-free:

• Everyone’s contribution is important.

• Everyone must work together for the greater good, encouraging collaboration and community.

• Children learn the importance of listening, appreciating and taking safe risks to conquer fear.

• Theatre practice is a lot of physical and mental work, so children need help pacing their energy.

• It is normal for your child to be emotional leading up to, during and after a performance, and parents can help by working with their children and the theatre company.

Your child is about to take a journey that, with a little help from you, will have a positive and transformative impact on him or her and the community in which you live.

• The Arts are a vital source of those human values which our young people will need in meeting challenges of change.

• Creative drama is an important vehicle for a child’s personal and social growth. Through its leaps of imagination, drama provides greater self-understanding and instills a deeper sense of one’s own abilities and worth.

• Drama is a highly organized discipline that demands and fosters social skills in working as a group towards a common goal.

• Dramatic Arts are important in the development of human potential.

Objectives

Student Theatre’s approach is to provide a lively, challenging program to help students develop awareness and self-confidence through the medium of Performing Arts. Students will be given an in-depth program using drama exercises suited to their individual needs.

At Student Theatre we understand that not all participants will pursue a career in Performing Arts and, therefore, the program functions on two levels: that of the actor and that of the individual.

Although several different types of Performing Arts settings exist, the discipline of the theatre is basically the same. Student Theatre prepares students for what to expect in the theatre scene should they decide to pursue the Arts, and focuses on such theatre fundamentals as:

• Breathing • Personal and Professional Discipline

• Concentration • Screen Study Interpretations

• Movement • Styles of Acting

• Improvisation • Voice and Speech

• Pantomime • Characterization

• Auditioning

Entertainment takes many forms and means different things to different people, and the Art of acting requires an understanding of the self and the world around.

Attitude is still the single most important quality required to proceed through logical stages of development. This comprehensive introduction to drama gives participants the opportunity to explore their potential, or just have a lively and challenging year. In either case, both social and personal growth will be rewarding.

• To enable freedom for maximum learning to take place while providing enough structure to learn objectives.

• To provide an opportunity to learn the Art of Theatre, lessons dealing with speech and diction, movement, mime, make-up, acting style scene study and the Art of the Play.

• To allow practice for the active, interested theatre students to further their talent

• To understand the business of Performing Arts.

• To increase problem-solving abilities.

• To improve coordination and motor abilities.

• To develop favorable attitudes towards the Arts.

• To enhance self-expression

• To make connections between the Arts and life.

Great Kids, Great Families!Parent Education

Theatre is a Performing Art, and therefore performing is an integral part of that process. This theatre should be enlightening, entertaining, stimulating, shocking, uplifting, thought provoking, passionate, and challenging to our established values in society. The material that we choose at Student Theatre is committed to affirming these values.

Parents and participants are reminded that the performance, although integral, is not the most important aspect - rather it is the long-term benefits and the courage involved in trying. To that end, Student Theatre follows a developmental program that emphasizes a year of process and training at the young levels before the students will be included in a performance. Our play list is developed with these things in mind, in the best interest of students and programs, and include a number of relevant theatre opportunities.

When Do We Get Our Parts?

The familiar refrain we hear each season and probably the most important thing to a child in a drama program. At Student Theatre we are helping to create good team members and citizens who perform for the joy it brings and for the love of the work. This develops human beings who are more empathetic, greater team players, able to manage disappointment and be proud of one another. This is a bittersweet lesson for the child - and sometimes the parent – but one that is more valuable and becomes clearer with time an perspective. For that reason, we continue with an anthology-based approach to our Spring Salute that involves students in the process, which helps them develop, making the emphasis creative and not product-oriented. The fruits of this labour can be seen at our summer Performing Arts Camp, through the strength and professionalism of the performers as they create a show in just eight days, and in the mentorship and abilities of our Senior students who have demonstrated these benefits not only in the program but at home, school and community.

How We Choose a Season

There are a large number of variables involved in choosing and casting a successful playbill:

• The needs and dynamics of the groups, allowing opportunity for maximum number of participants

• The challenges of using the Burlington Performing Arts Centre• Developing and maintaining an audience base• Marketing• Making use of Lighting Designers, Stage Managers, Orchestra Members, and other

professionals

These and other variables need to be considered to maintain a thriving and relevant Arts and Cultural experience for youth and families in our community. Our playlist is developed in the best interest of students, and chosen with a great deal of collaboration and thought.

Attendance Policy

Student Theatre should be treated as a commitment and responsibility. In order that the full goals of the program be carried out, we enforce a strict attendance policy. Repeated lateness or absence disrupts the normal functioning of the program and shows disrespect to both participants and program.

Students registered in the fall/winter session should consider Student Theatre a major extra curricular activity outside of school for one season. Students must attend rehearsals and they must work hard. At all times, responsibility, time-management skills, forethought, decision-making and problem solving are encouraged and schedules are handed out to make planning possible.

We need your support in order to achieve maximum benefit from our goals. Numerous absences require us to make several last minute revisions that can affect quality of the program.

Senior Level: Please note that all legitimate absences should be submitted in advance, using the Book-Off Form with date of submission, date and time of absence, reason for absence, and alternate plan. These must be approved. In instances where students have three unapproved absences, their part may be replaced. This is not to say that arrangements cannot and have not been made, just that students take responsibility for themselves and do so in advance rather than in a moment’s notice.

We reinforce the importance of school and home life responsibilities; if a student is unable to manage many responsibilities without jeopardizing their health and interests, they should be encouraged to give something up until such time as they are able to give a larger commitment. At all times, decisions are reflections of what we think is in the students’ best interest.

Please address any conflicts that arise from your own schedule with us as soon as possible in order that we can all plan well in advance.

Policy on Talent Management

At Student Theatre our focus is on development, skill and team building and acquisition and practice of leadership skills, problem solving and self-concept - a process oriented approach to learning for students. We are trying to focus on a learning for learning sake format. Today’s student is faced with many sophisticated ideas and often accepts too readily those ideas presented in the media or by peers. By going back to basics and emphasizing the value of commitment and hard work as a self-discipline, we feel that more thinking and decision making is placed on the child and that they can discover more about how and why - giving them more opportunity for creativity and challenging their true motivations.

We strongly believe that careful consideration should be given if considering this sort of work for any child under the age of 19 years and parental guidance is of prime importance.

It is at the discretion of the parent, and communication between the family and Program Director is important, particularly in a case where it may become a conflict of interest.

Rehearsal Policy

Any and all additional rehearsals, including occasional Saturdays (for senior members only), are announced on the schedule for the year. Very little actual time is devoted to producing our shows when we meet only once a week. Your support is appreciated during production weeks where rehearsals are more frequent, including occasional Saturdays and week nights. Student Theatre assures you that this is not an unreasonable rehearsal schedule, especially when compared to programs of a similar nature both in and outside school.

Student Code of Conduct

A behaviour code is established to help students gain the skills, knowledge and values that will help them live full and worthwhile lives. Students have the right to be treated and should treat others in a fair and judicious manner. Within this code are certain responsibilities and expectations. It is hoped that the application of the code will result in a positive atmosphere and that students will develop a sense of self-worth and self-discipline. Please review this code together.

Building healthy and long term relationships, the ability to manage stress, anger and emotions, proactive interaction with others and protection from bullying, violence and unacceptable behaviour are some of the hallmarks of Student Theatre, dedicated to providing a positive environment in which to learn and grow. All policies are designed in the best interest and safety of the student.

Student Valuables

Students are cautioned not to bring large amounts of money, phones or iPads to the program. If it is absolutely necessary to bring sums of money or valuables, please have them stored in the office. Cell phones should be left in the cloakroom.

Social Media

All social media should be used responsibly. All devices must be left in the cloakroom or left at home. Cell phones are not to be brought into washrooms. We encourage transparency and fully use Burlington Student Theatre on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram is encouraged. A good rule of thumb is not to post anything you wouldn’t be proud of.

Smoking

In accordance with municipal by-law smoking is prohibited. Medical evidence has proven that smoking is a serious health hazard. As educators, we feel we have the responsibility for helping to prevent non-smokers from taking up the habit. Also, we would like to assist smokers in breaking the habit. Chewing gum is discouraged as inhibits performance and is a safety hazard.

Drinking

Drinking, drunkenness, and possession of alcoholic beverages by students while under the supervision of Student Theatre is contrary to Parks & Recreation Department Zero Tolerance Policy and is illegal.

Drugs

Possession of, or use of drugs by students under supervision of Student Theatre is not only contrary to the Zero Tolerance Policy, but is illegal. Student Theatre will move for the expulsion of any student violating regulations or selling drugs.

Weather

In the event that programs are cancelled due to inclement weather, this will be announced on the local radio stations and on the city’s website at burlington.ca.

Dress Code

Members are required to wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing, preferable track wear, shorts, t-shirts or tights in order to be included in all exercises pertaining to drama and movement. Jazz shoes are recommended and may be required for senior members. Hair should be tied back. No excessive jewelry is permitted. Valuables should be left at home and cell phones left in bags.

Wear ST with Pride

Student Theatre garment order will be available throughout the year.

Costumes

Costume lists are sent home with students after casting shows, parent cooperation wherever possible is appreciated to provide consistency for the entire cast.

It is also advised that parents arrive promptly to pick up their child in order to enable staff to fulfill planning responsibilities. The time prior to and after the program is used as planning time for staff and to allow time for discussion with parents and members. During show, students will be required to remain until all clean-up responsibilities have been fulfilled. To ensure their safety, please encourage your child to stay inside the building. Always bring your child directly into the building. Early arrivals should remain with children until instructor begins class. We cannot be responsible for unsupervised children outside program hours.

A telephone is available for emergencies only and at Student Theatre a courtesy phone in the lower practice room is available for emergencies only. Cell phones and pagers should be turned off.

Fall/Winter/Spring Session and August Programming

When arriving at Student Theatre please use the side parking lot and enter by the door assigned to the program level. In inclement weather, please leave boots at the door before entering studios.

Summer Session and July Programming

Performing Arts Camp is held at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre. Participants should report to staff in the main lobby for attendance upon arrival to their program. More information will be provided upon registration, which begins January.

Observations and Correspondence

We rely on the trust and support of parents and we consider parent education to be of prime importance. The greatest value of our work comes to those children whose parents take an active supportive role in their child’s interests. Parents are encouraged to attend all shows and ask questions applicable to the program goals.

During program hours, parents are welcome to arrange observation of a class in advance or any sit in during the last ½ hour of any class provided it does not compromise the activity or students’ focus.

We will be supplying periodic information communiques and an information board will be made available. The Program Director is available at all times for communication. Look for notices regarding special events, etc.

Orientation:

All parents are invited to join us in the auditorium on the first day of program, once all students have arrived, for a brief orientation.

As an impressionable teen who felt like she belonged in the Land of the Misfit Toys, I learned things from each of you. I learned that relationships, quality, hard work, and consistency matter. In fact you taught me that each of these things is necessary for people, communities and your teaching made a big impact on me, I have never forgotten you. Particularly for the way you treated us students - you consistently encouraged us and championed our skills. Your high expectations and constructive criticism were delivered respectfully, as you were mindful not to undermine the fragile sense of self that is part of being a teen.

Students feel supported and valued by staff as they said that they encouraged them to be their best selves, made them feel safe, and had an open door policy in regards to any problems that they might be having. Participants also stated that staff were genuinely interested in what was happening both in the program and outside the program (ie. school), and gave them constructive criticism to reach their personal goals in acting.

Civic Engagement and Volunteer Opportunities

Activism is generational and every generation has its fight. It will be incumbent upon our youth to learn from, and honour, their history and especially to respect the people who made it happen for them. It will be similarly incumbent upon our elders to respect the promise that young people represent, and to teach, lead and eventually pass to them the torch. Every healthy civilization is built by the wisdom of its elders and the strength of its youth.

Civic Engagement -Senior Student Theatre

Student Theatre may include events outside the regular program hours that provide added experience for the students and reinforce concepts and ideas presented at Student Theatre. The Program Director and students arrange these, and attendance is not mandatory; students are sent at the discretion of the parent.

Student Theatre’s Senior program offers an outreach component which gives students the opportunity to experience a variety of live audiences in different settings. Our troupe has performed at such venues as Central Park Labyrinth, Carpenter Hospice, Sound of Music Festival, Art Gallery of Burlington, Burlington Central Library, Halton Breast Cancer Support and Burlington Community Foundation.

Participation is on a voluntary basis and shows are organized throughout the year as opportunities arise. Students who do participate must make a commitment.

Volunteer and Co-operative Employment

Student Theatre is a co-operative education employer. We accept 1-6 students per season from local High Schools.

As an added component of the Senior program, opportunities for employment in the Little Performer, Junior and Intermediate levels are available to train interested students in working with others, offering students the responsibilities of employment without having to work unreasonable hours. Students who apply for this program must have parental consent and it must be understood that they will be required Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. until 9:30 p.m., in addition to their Thursday evening rehearsals, and any extra rehearsal times. We also provide students with the opportunity to fulfill ministry guidelines for volunteer hours.

All crew meetings and additional work at Student Theatre is managed and supervised by crew leads and production coordinators and hours should be logged and approved at parent discretion as it arises.

Great Kids, Great Families!Student Theatre has always been about big things. Big stages, big acting, big dance numbers, big voices, big costumes, big HAIR, and a big splash in the acting opportunity pool for students from all over the world.

For some of us, that’s all Student Theatre is about. The big things... but for me, Student Theatre has always been about the little things, the magic things. When 76 trombones caught the morning sun, when the dog bites and the bee stings. When Sophia LaPierre went on stage with a cast and rocked it, and when Alanna cried in her seat when I asked Rapunzel to stay with me.

The Student Theatre experience has been amazing. It is the best experience any parent could imagine for their children. My son graduated this year but he said himself that he would never really leave Student Theatre. Thank you for making him feel valued and appreciated. We will miss sessions at Student Theatre. In fact, life will be strange without them. However, we are confident he will bring the skills he learned and practiced at ST to adult life. We extend our appreciation and thanks to all staff and wish you all the best as you continue working with the next generations of children. You really make the world a better place.
