It’s come to our attention
that a certain amount of
additional configuration
is required in order to
use DrayTek equipment
on a Sky network.
This application note
will hopefully clarify what
is required and show
you how to complete the
process successfully.
Configuring DrayTek Equipment
With A Sky Network.
It’s come to our attention that a certain amount of additional configuration is
required in order to use DrayTek equipment on a Sky network. This additional
configuration is due to the fact that, at present, Sky tie in the MAC address of
the Sky router to their server. The result of this is that removal of the Sky Router
from the setup is potentially problematic. For example, forcing a Router to have
a specific MAC address so that it will work with Sky.
It is possible however to use the Sky Router as a Modem and then use the
DrayTek equipment for routing and wireless functions. In order to do this, you
will need to configure both the Sky Router an the DrayTek equipment.
For the purposes of this application, the equipment being used will be a Sagem
F@ST2304 Router (supplied by Sky) and the DrayTek 2850 MIMO (DrayTek
v2850 ADSL/VDSL/3G MIMO Wireless-N Router).

In order to complete the configuration process, the following instructions will
need to be carried out.
First of all, make sure that the telephone line is connected into the Sagem
Router (supplied by Sky).
Connect a CAT cable from any of the LAN ports on the Sagem Router into
LAN port 4 of the 2850. Please note that different router models may have
a dedicated LAN port for this (see below).
Model: 2850
Model: 2920

Providing that the Sky Router was wired correctly and the connecting CAT cable
is run, you should see that both units can now be accessed.
In this case, the Sky Router is on 192.168.0.1 and the Draytek Router is on
192.168.1.1 however, at this stage, the Sky Router will block most
incoming traffic to the DrayTek Router due to its firewall. As a result of this, you
will not be able to log in remotely ie. Dynamic DNS.
To overcome this we need to login to both the Sky and DrayTek Routers. Be-
cause both of the routers have been wired together with the CAT
connecting cable, we can use one wired connection from the Draytek Router and
log into both routers at the same time.
In order to do this, please complete the following.
Open a web browser and go to 192.168.1.1 This will open the
Draytek Router configurator. The default passwords for both Username
and Password is admin.

Once logged into the unit you should see a screen similar to this:
As you can see WAN 2 (Test) is currently connected to the internet, WAN
1 is the VDSL/ADSL phone line and WAN 3 is the USB
internet. Due to this type of setup, the router will not display a
connection on the WAN 2.
If you select WAN on the left hand side it will bring down a list of
options
Select Internet Access in this list
and a new page will open up.

Once the new page has opened, select the Static or Dynamic IP
on WAN2. Once selected the Details Page will become highlighted.
Once selected you can then configure the WAN connection so that an
internet connection from the Modem/ASDL Line can be established.
Make sure to select the Radio button to enable this WAN connection and
then select the Radio button to Obtain an IP address automatically. Press
OK. You may also wish to add the Routers IP in the Router Name.

If you go back to the home page you will see that this router is now getting
an internet connection.
You will need to make a note of the MAC address that is displayed
(example: -00:1D:AA:A6:47:9A).
You’ll need this MAC address so that when you connect to the Sky router,
you can assign it to a specific IP address in order to create a Demilitarised
Zone (DMZ). This will allow the particular IP address to get information
from the outside world without Sky interfering and blocking certain
aspects.

If we now open a new tab or a new web browser and go to the Sky
Router, the default IP address is 192.168.0.1. You will be able to see the
other routers at a glance but if you decide to click on a tab, you will be
asked for a User name and Password. By default, the User name is
admin and the Password is Sky.
Once logged into the router, you’ll need to reserve the MAC address to an
IP address, Sky calls this “IP Filter”. You will be able to find this under the
Advanced tab and LAN IP SETUP (see top of page 8). Here you can click
the ADD button to type in the information that is needed ie. IP address you
wish to give the Draytek and then the MAC address which was taken from
the Draytek. You can also name this device eg. Draytek so it can easily be
seen whenever you log back into the Sky Router. Once complete, click on
apply.

If you then reboot both the Sky and Draytek routers, you will notice that
the Draytek IP has been changed to the 192.168.0.2 address. This usually
happens as a result of the PC/Laptop taking over before the Draytek gets
a chance.

Once you have insured that the Draytek will only get one IP address you can
then assign the DMZ to a specific IP address. This will be the same address that
the Draytek has been given.
Select the ADVANCED Tab and the first option should be WAN SETUP.
Insert the IP address you have given the Draytek into these boxes and
click apply.
In order to log into this router via Dynamic DNS through www.dyndns.org,
it has to be dyndns as Sky doesn’t allow any other service to be used, I
have setup a username and account through the website. It offers a 14
day trial period which then costs $20 (£12.50) for a year. Once DYNDNS
has been setup go back into your SKY router to add the details.

Under the ADVANCED tab select DYNAMIC DNS to access the correct
screen to input the information.
Once all of this has been completed, the Sky router is now setup. The last
thing we need to do is open up the HTTPS port so that it isn’t using the
standard 443 port. On the Draytek select System Maintenance on the left
hand side and then Management (continued on page 11).

Here you will need to make sure that the “Allow management from the
Internet” is checked/turned on. During this demonstration, all options other
than access via HTTPS were then removed. On the right hand side you
will see which ports are being used. Again, during this demo, the HTTPS
Port was changed from the default of 443 to 5115 as it was free.
Once this has been done you can exit out of the Draytek Router and work
solely on the Sky.
On the Sky Router you’ll need to insert the information from the DynDns
webpage, they ask you for your hostname, username and password.
Once this information has been added into the Sky router, you can apply
the changes and log out.

(continued from page 11).
Ideally you need to run this from a location that isn’t on site. Open a
webpage and type ‘HTTPS://dyndns-hostname.com:5115’, change the
DynDns-hostname to your specific name you have chosen on the DynDns
website. The 5115 is the port number you have chosen on your Draytek.
Once this is done the webpage should load however, during this demo on
a Windows 7, 64 bit machine, a Certification error message was presented
(see below). Click continue to move on from here and get to the Drayteks
login page.
Please note: If you are going to be accessing this router remotely it advised that
you change the Admin password for future use.
