BRINGING HEALTH TO THE PEOPLE:
OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTNERSHIP
Presented by: Peggy Mahon, Guysborough Antigonish Atrait Health Authority
Peggy will speak about the partnership between Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library and the Guyborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority (GASHA) that developed a community health resource centre called Health Connections located in the People's Place Library in Antigonish. Health Connections has been a success in promoting access to services and resources both in the community and at the library.
THE ROMANCE...AND THE
FACTS...OF HISTORICAL FICTION
Presented by: Genevieve Graham, author and editor.
Historical Romance is the Rodney Dangerfield of literature. It gets no respect. Why is it, then, that sales of Historical Romance books vastly outnumber those of all other genres? Thrice published by Penguin US, Nova Scotia author and editor Genevieve Graham shares the facts behind reading and writing Historical Fiction. Genevieve Graham began writing five years ago, motivated by her desire for quality fictional companionship and adventure. Berkley Sensation, a division of Penguin US, published her first two novels, Under the Same Sky and Sound of the Heart, and is considering a third in the series. She is constantly writing, occasionally working on two novels simultaneously. She also runs her own editing business and has edited manuscripts for writers around the world. One of the books she edited has recently been published by Harper Collins.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR
COLLABORATION

The speakers will also outline collaborative initiatives currently underway between the public and university libraries. Eric Stackhouse is Chief Librarian with Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library and has an active interest in showcasing the history and culture of communities, especially in rural areas. BETTER BOARD GOVERNANCE:
DEVELOPING A ROAD MAP
Presented by: Dr. Tom Urbaniak, Trustee,
Cape Breton Regional Library Board, &
author of Action, Accommodation,
Accountability: Rules of Order for Canadian
Organizations.
Although they serve pro bono, library
trustees have important fiduciary
obligations, requiring highly effective board
performance. This session, moderated talk-
show style, follows last year's energetic
panel where library trustees debated what
works and what doesn't in board-staff
relations, financial oversight, performance
appraisals of the CEO, board self-
evaluations, policy development, and
advocacy. We will review progress over the
past year and suggest road maps for library
boards looking to make a difference and to
be models of good governance.

SERVICE LOCAL, SHARE ABROAD
Presented by: Troy Myers, CEO and Chief
Librarian & Christina Pottie, Outreach

employees or explain to others what you do,
but only if there is a true sense of purpose
behind them. South Shore Public Libraries

learning and sharing". Come and hear about
a few of the projects we have initiated to
take this mission off of our masthead and
put it into practice.
Specifically:
1. The "Library in Motion" event tent is a mini library with C@P site that has 2 summers of Farmers Markets, Festivals, and Street parties under its belt.
2. A partnership with NSCC International that saw SSPL staff travel to Tanzania to share in an "EFE" project at VETA Mikumi.

RESOURCES FOR GAELIC
LANGUAGE & LEARNERS IN
NOVA SCOTIA
Presented by: Trueman & Laurinda Matheson - Sìol Cultural Enterprises
The Gaelic language was brought to Nova Scotia by Highland settlers in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, it continued to be the primary means of communication in settlements throughout Cape Breton and parts of mainland Nova Scotia. The use of the language has declined sharply in the 20th century, but has been experiencing a revival recently. There is a new generation of Gaelic learners, eager to absorb the language and in search of resources.
Trueman & Laurinda Matheson of Sìol Cultural Enterprises will give an introduction to the history of the Gaelic language, list some key print and online resources for Gaelic learners, and discuss some online resources for Gaelic-related reference questions.

ONE BOOK NOVA SCOTIA
Presented by: Frances Newman, Regional Librarian - Annapolis Valley Regional Library
One Book Nova Scotia is an exciting new project Libraries Nova Scotia is offering in the Fall of 2012. Many places have successfully carried out community wide reading events such as Calgary, Hamilton, and Prince Edward Island. Now it’s Nova Scotia’s turn!
Designed to foster a love of reading, “unity reading” – many people reading the same book – encourages discussion and excitement about a book. Public libraries, university and community college libraries, Nova Scotia Provincial Library, as well as booksellers and the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia are working together on the One Book Nova Scotia initiative.
Find out how you and your community can participate in One Book Nova Scotia!

Presented by: Rachel Crosby,
Tantallon Branch - Halifax Public Libraries
and Peggy Denman, Alderney Gate Branch -

Does your library currently use puppets, or do you find yourself doubting their value in a library setting and worrying it will be too expensive, time hungry and staff intensive? Whether you are on the bandwagon, or need convincing, puppets do play an important role in early childhood literacy development, and can be added to your programming roster easily and in a cost effective nature.
This workshop is designed to help library staff of all levels find a comfort level and appreciation for working with puppets .

SENIORS AND SWEET PEAS: COLLECTION ACCESS IN THE DIGITAL ERA
Presented by: Heather MacKenzie Branch Manager, Keshen Goodman Public Library - Halifax Public Libraries, Additional speakers TBA
With more and more of our older adult library members becoming e-book users, demand for digital collections in our libraries is growing exponentially. Libraries in Nova Scotia are developing innovative ways to deliver access to downloadable media. This session will present examples of these services using technologies such as "Sweet Pea" readers and Playaways.
We will also look at the future of more traditional technologies such as Large Print and Audio-books - will those who depend on these formats be left behind as both publishers and libraries divert resources to the electronic formats?
