The zodiac is divided into 12 equal sectors, each of 30° and each sector is called a Rasi (sign). In Indian astronomy, the initial point from which the longitude of the Rasis is measured, is a fixed point on the ecliptic (which is exactly opposite the reference star CHITRA - spices 16). This means that Nirayana longitude of star Chitra will always be 180° for any Epoch. This is the basis of calculating the true Chitrapaksha Ayanamsa. DREKKANA (Decnate)— G.K. Goel, B.Sc., B.E., Director of Courses (Astrology)

Zodiac, a circular belt of 360°, stretching about 9° north and 9° south of the Ecliptic (apparent path of Sunaround earth) within which the planets and the moon remain in course of their movement. The zodiac is dividedinto 12 equal sectors, each of 30° and each sector is called a Rasi (sign). In Indian astronomy, the initial pointfrom which the longitude of the Rasis is measured, is a fixed point on the ecliptic (which is exactly opposite thereference star CHITRA - spices 16). This means that Nirayana longitude of star Chitra will always be 180° for anyEpoch. This is the basis of calculating the true Chitrapaksha Ayanamsa.

Yet again, this belt is divided in 27 equal sectors, each of 13°20' and each of such sector called Nakshatra.Rasis and Nakshatras, though mathematical in nature, are recognised by different set of stars in the sky. Theconstellations, representing Rasis and Nakshatras, sometimes overlap each other and sometimes wide part.

This concept is beautifully explained by Varaha Mihira in Chapter I Shloka 4 in ‘Brihat Jataka as under :

“The (twelve) signs of the Zodiac are commencing with the first point of Aries and of (the asterism of)Aswini. Each sign consists nine stellar quarters. The circle formed by the 12 signs represent the head, face, breast, heart, belly, navel, abdomen, genital organ, two thighs, two bones, two ankles and two feet of“KALAPURUSHA”. (The terms) Rasi, Kshetra, Griha, Riksha, Bha, Bhavana are synonymous terms.”

This Shloka consists of 72 letters, thus indicates that “Nirayana” and “Sayana” Zodiac both consisting of 12(twelve) signs are separating with each other by about one degree in 72 years along the ecliptic (the total Dasaperiods assigned to seven planets from Sun onwards is also 72 years (5+21+7+9+10+16+4) in Kalachakra DasaScheme of Maharishi Parasara - BHP - 47/33).

Maharishi Jaimini assigned body parts for twelve houses (commencing either from ascendant or Moonwhichever is stronger) in different manner than given in standard texts. According to Jaimini 12 houses representhead, face, throat, arms, stomach, loins, back, groins (including anus, genitals etc.), feet, eyes, ears, and nose inrespective order (Jaimini Sutra, 4.1.3 to 4.1.15). This is a very significant suggestion from Maharishi and needsconsiderable care and research in application of this scheme in predictive astrology.

Both the above schemes do not contradict but are complementary to each other. First scheme, basically, indicates the physical location of body parts (finer division is obtained with the help of Drekkana). On the otherhand, second scheme indicates the influence of body parts on houses, through which they operate. For example, heart, eyes, ears and nose are represented by 7th, 10th, 11th and 12th houses respectively in the second scheme. The native's faculty of feeling, visualizing, perceiving and finally inferring depends on these houses where heart, eyes, ear and nose plays important role. 5th house representing intellect and power of discrimination, is oppositeto 10th, 11th and 12th houses. Thus, two hands operate from 4th house to fulfill the goal.

1. The Varga (Divisional) Charts

It is not possible to access subtle areas of the native’s life with the help of bare Sign Chart and Nakshatras.Sage Parasara teaches us sixteen different Vargas. Each Varga chart is specific in itself, and deals in some specificareas of life.

Kalyan-Varma says in ‘Saravali’ :

In above Shlokas, Saravali indicates that each sign is get divided in 150 parts with the help ofShodhasvargas (the whole Zodiac is divided in 1800 parts). It is just impossible to understand or move an inch in‘HORASHASTRA’ without the help of these Vargas.

Page 3: Drek Kana

Drekkna.RTF - 3 - 3/19/2011

These Vargas are placed in four schemes called Shadvarga, Saptavarga, Dasavarga and Shodhasvarga.Hora-Shastra indicate potential, promise and materialisation of an event with the help of these Vargas.Vyankatesh Sharma in ‘Sarvarth Chintmani’ has put utmost importance on Shadvarga and Shashtyamsa-varga tojudge the POTENTIAL of the nativity. Each of the 16 Vargas indicate the PROMISE in some specific areas of lifeassigned to them. But the real potential of each sign, house and planet with whose help the promise is materialisedin real life, can be judged with the help of Shadvarga. This important difference in Shadvargas and Shodhasvargashould always be remembered. ‘BRIHAT JATAKA’, deals mainly in Shadvargas.

Vimsopaka strength of 20 Rupas is divided in Shadvarga as under by Sage Parasara :Rasi (Sign) — 6Hora — 2Drekkana — 4Navamsa — 5Dwadasamsa — 2Trimsamasa — 1

Total — 20 Rupas

15 points of Vimsopaka Bala (out of total of 20 points) is allotted to Rasi (6), Navamsa (5) and Drekkana(4). As such, Drekkana Varga chart holds prominent and important place after Rasi and Navamsa charts in theShadvarga scheme.

This paperis dedicated tobringouttheuseand importanceofDrekkanaChartin Vedicpredictiveastrology.

2. Drekkana (Decnate) Charts

Every sign is divided into three equal parts of 10° each, known as Drekkana. The first Drekkana of everysign (0°-10°) would be of the same sign. The second Drekkana (10°-20°) of every sign would fall in the fifth signfrom it. The last or third Drekkana (20°-30°) of every sign would be in the ninth sign from it. Bhachakra, therefore, consists of 36 Drekkana of 10° each. The following table will indicate the division of Drekkanaprescribed by sage Parasara and other Jatak-Granths (BPH, Ch. 6, Sl. 7, 8).

3. Important Note on Drekkana reckoning

Pt. Sanjay Rath explains in his translation of Jaimini ‘UPADESA SUTRAS’:

“There are two methods of reckoning the Drekkanas i.e. by either regular count (Zodiacal/reverse) ortriplicity. In the method based on regularity, the Parivrittitraya Drekkana (based on Vriddha Karika) is adoptedfollowing regular Zodiacal order. While the Somanath Drekkana uses Zodiacal count only for odd signs andreverse for even signs. In the method, based on triplicity, Prasara Drekkana takes the trines from the sign itself (asindicated above in Table 1). The Jagannath Drekkana takes the trines from the movable sign.”

Drekkana is pronounced as DRESH-KANA. The word 'DRESH' has a root in Dharshan which meansseeing or visualizing objects which are apparent and as well as hidden (or obscure) in nature. The word 'KANA'

Page 4: Drek Kana

Drekkna.RTF - 4 - 3/19/2011

means corner — astrologically it means trine (or Trikona). Thus, the word Drekkana (Dresh-Kana) represents theVarga (Division), where the signs, trine to each other, convey apparent as well as hidden personality and nature(Swaroopa) of the native. Thus, Drekkana Division will be valid only, if the method of reckoning is based ontriplicity.

If method of reckoning is based on regular count (Zodiacal/reverse), such Division should be called Triamsa(like Navamsa or Saptamsa etc.). I believe, Triamsa may not provide any significant information independentlywhich could not be visualized from birth chart directly.

'Varaha Mihira' quotes another method for reckoning, advocated by some authorities in Chapter I, Shloka 12of 'Brihat Jataka' :

dsfpÙkq gksjka izFkeka HkiL; ok×NfUrykHkkf/irksf}Zrh;ke~Aæs"dk.klaKkefi o.kZ;fUrLo}kn'kSdkn'kjkf'kikuke~AA12AA

Meaning that "the signs of three Drekkana of each house are (Ist) the sign in the first, (2nd) the sign in the12th, and (3rd) the sign in the eleventh houses respectively."

Varaha Mihira has not adopted this scheme of Drekkana division and follows Maharishi Parasara, in all hismonumental works (may be for the reasons explained above in this note).

We are giving below the tables of Drekkana adopted and recommended by other authorities.

Drekkana division given from Table 2 to Table 5 do have specific use in predictive astrology and are givenabove for the reference purposes only.

We shall adopt and discuss the use of Drekkana division in this paper given in Table 1. This method ofdivision was taught by sage Parasara and adopted by most of the authorities including Varaha Mihira.

Note : Two examples are given to illustrate various dictums and principles given in this article. Most ofthese principles are culled out from 'Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra' (BPH), Jaimini Sutras (J.S.), Brihat Jataka (BJ),Prasana Marg (PM), and Jataka Parijat (J.P.).

4. Identification of Drekkanas, Presiding Deities and Rishis

1. Ist Drekkana of each sign is called Karma Drekkana, 2nd is called Bhoga Drekkana and 3rd is called ‘NashaDrekkana, presided over by Devarishi Narada, Maharishi Agastya and Brahma-Rishi Durvasa respectively.

2. Drekkana of movable signs represents Rajas Guna, Manushya, presiding Deity Brahma, Rishi Durvasa.Drekkana of Fixed signs represented by Tamas Guna, Rakshasas presiding deity Shiva and MaharishiAgastya. Drekkana of Dual signs represented by Satva Guna, Devas, presiding deity Vishnu and DevarishiNarada (Parasara has given clear indications of presiding species, Rashis and Deities of moveable, fixed anddual signs in Chapter 6 on Shodhas Varga in 'BPH' while introducing Drekkana (D-3), Navamsa (D-9) andAkshavedamsa (D-45) Varga Charts).

3. Ist Drekkanas of Dual Rasis has best qualities being Karma Drekkana, represented by Devas and DevarishiNarada. (The reason is that Karma Drekkana as well as Drekkana of dual Rasi is represented by DevarishiNarada).

4. 2nd Drekkanas of movable signs represents Bhoga, Rakshasa presiding deity Shiva and Maharishi Agastya. The natives born in such Drekkanas should practice maximum disciplined life, so that they may not fallfrom their Dharma.

5. 3rd Drekkanas of fixed signs is Nasha Drekkana, Rajas Guna, Manushya and presiding deity is Brahma,Rishi Durvasa. The natives born in this Drekkana must live unattached and frugal life, otherwise they willnot be able to attain Salvation, and will born again and again to reap the fruits of their Karma.

5. Role of Drekkana in identifying Diseases

Maharishi Jaimini in “UPADESH SUTRAS” has given significant and important lead in SUTRA 3/3/59 :

Lo f=ka'kka'ks dkSydkukaa iQykfu jksxkn;%AA“Diseases and other evils are seen from Rasi (the world ‘Sva’ includes Lagna, Navamsa, Drekkana and

Dwadasamsa — four Vargas out of six Shadh-Vargas), Trimsamsa and Kauluka.”

Page 6: Drek Kana

Drekkna.RTF - 6 - 3/19/2011

The word “Sva” is equivalent to 4 (four) according to Katapayadi-Varga and hints at four vital divisions —Rasi, Navamsa, Drekkana and Suryamsa. In Shadh-Varga, Rasi Drekkana, Navamsa and Dwadasamsa areidentified by Rasis. Hora and Trimsamsa are identified by planets Sun/Moon and Mars/Mercury/Jupiter/Venus/Saturn, respectively. In Jataka Granthas, ‘Amsa' generally points out to the above four Vargasaccording to the reference and context, e.g.:

lq[kjkf'kuoka'ks okokgu}kn'kka'kdsAcU/qæs"dk.kds ;% L;kr~ rL;HkqfDr% 'kqHkkogkAA

— Madya Parasari, 6/7

Meaning thereby “if a planet, acquires the Navamsa, Dwadasamsa or Drekkana of the sign falling in fourthhouse of natal chart, gives good/favourable results in his Antardasa (Sub-period).”

Similar other references are given below showing importance of Drekkana, Navamsa and Dwadasamsadivisions:

"The Yogas explained in the previous Sutras are also to be applied in Navamsa and Drekkana charts." (J.Sutra, 4.1.20)

"If two or all the three — Bhava Lagna, Hora Lagna and Ghatika Lagna are in aspect to a planet in dignity,an auspicious Yoga is formed (malefic, afflicted or weak planets will give undesirable results). If said three (3)Lagnas and their Navamsas and Drekkanas or the said Lagnas and their Navamsas or the said Lagnas and theirDrekkanas aspected by Natal ascendant (or a planet), a Yoga is formed." (BPH, Chapter 39, Shloka 24 and 25)

"When the lord of Drekkana occupied by the Moon (or any planet) aspects him in natal chart, the resultswill be auspicious." (Brihat Jataka, Chapter 19, Shloka 4)

On Dwadasamsa: "The results which are applicable for each of the signs in the natal chart by occupationof Moon (or other planets) and also on account of aspects of other planets on them, willbe similarwhen theMoon(orotherPlanets) occupiestheDwadasamsaofsamesign." (Brihat Jataka, Ch. 19, Sl. 4). The inferenceis :

(i) The result of a planet is judged by virtue of its placement in the sign as well asDwadasamsa sign in natal chart.

(ii) The judgment of Dwadasamsa chart is also done separately.

(iii) The sign (Rasi), Drekkana, Navamsa and Dwadasamsa are very closely linked with eachother. Drekkana (10°) is the 1/3 part of a Rasi, representing an arc of 30°. Kauluka (5°), Navamsa(3°20’) and Dwadasamsa (2°30’) are 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4 parts of the Drekkana respectively. Therefore,Maharishi Jaimini teaches us that all these four Vargas (represented by the word ‘Sva’), Trisamasasand Kaulukas are carefully analysed to ascertain diseases and other adversities in the life of a native.

The role ofKaulukas (Shastamsa D-6) willbe elaborated in a separate paper. The broad hints aregivenontheroleofDrekkanainidentificationofdiseasesanditsotherusesinthispaper:

6. Influence of Drekkanas on body parts

Kalapurusha represented by signs, Bhava and Nakshatras represent specific body parts. The Drekkanasmake the division even finer. The 12 signs indicate 12 body parts in human body on a broader basis. 36 Drekkanasof Kalapurushas represent 36 body parts.

(1) If first Drekkana is rising in the Ascendant, the twelve Rasi counted from the Ascendant seriallysignify the twelve parts of the upper portion of the body in natal chart. Similarly if second or thirdDrekkana is rising, twelve part of the middle or lower body will be represented in the Rasi chartcommencing from Ascendant in serial order. Table No. 6 shows the distribution of the body partsassigned on account of rising Drekkana. (J.P., Ch. 3, Sl. 77)

(2) Planets placed in the same Drekkana (movable/fixed/common) as rising Drekkana shall afflict theportion above neck. Planets falling in the second type of Drekkana from rising Drekkana afflict thetrunk (middle portion of the body), and in third type, they afflict lower portion of the body.

Page 7: Drek Kana

Drekkna.RTF - 7 - 3/19/2011

(3) The body parts which will be found afflicted after applying both the above rules 9 (1) and 9(2) willhave severe affliction compared to body parts represented by other houses.

Table6. BODY PARTS

2nd house to 6th represents the right side of body parts, whereas 12th house to 8th houserepresent the left side of the body parts.

(4) The above table is a good indicator to find the relative health or weakness (disease) in the variousorgans of the body.

In the example, horoscope, 2nd Drekkana of moveable Rasi (Capricorn) is rising. According torule 9(1), 9th house representing left ventricle and auricle of heart. According to Rule 9(2), the planetsfalling in fixed sign will afflict middle portion of the body. As Ketu is placed in 9th house in fixedsign Taurus, the left ventricle of heart was more severely afflicted and was operated upon.

7. Role of Navamsa as part of Drekkana

Each Drekkana contains three Navamsa of 3°20’ each. First Navamsa of each Drekkana is moveable signand represents minerals (Dhatu), Second Navamsa of each Drekkana is of fixed sign and represents vegetableworld (Moola) and Third (3rd) Navamsa of each Drekkana is of Dual sign represented by Jeeva (living being). This order is reversed in the case of even signs.

The division of Drekkana in three Navamsa could be utilised, in many ways, in predictive astrology. Inexample horoscope, Saturn is placed in Pisces sign at 6°49’. Saturn is in Dual sign, in Dual sign Drekkana andfirst Drekkana of Pisces sign. Saturn is in 3rd (Dual) Navamsa of this sign represented by Jeeva (living being).(Jaimini says when Saturn is placed in any 'sign' or 'amsa', the order will always be Zodiacal and regular. Ketureverses the assigned order.)

This indicates that Saturn Major period will start showing results from the beginning and inculcate goodqualities in the native, who will benefit from his interaction from living beings.

8. Role of Kaulukas (5°) as part of Drekkana

Kauluka is the exclusive contribution of Maharishi Jaimini (U.S., 3.3.59). Kauluka is Shastamsa. Each signcontains six Kaulukas of 5° each. These are reckoned by regular Zodiacal count. For odd signs, the Kaulukas arereckoned from Aries to Virgo and for even signs from Libra to Pisces (Table 7).

Maharishi Jaimini teaches very specific use of Kauluka, for predicting diseases, evils and even death ofnative and his other relations. When Paryay and Vimshottari Dasas are applied to Shastamsa chart, they giveprecise timing of the evil events in native's life (Jaimini Sutras, 3.3.59 to 3.3.129).

As this article is dedicated for the use of Drekkana, some broad hints are given belowon the role ofKaulukaaspartofDrekkana:

(i) Each Drekkana contains two Kaulukas of 5° each. They are termed as 1st and 2nd Kauluka.

(ii) First (1st) Kauluka of each Drekkana represents evils and diseases of internal origins.

(iii) Second (2nd) Kauluka of each Drekkana represents evils and diseases of extern origin.

(iv) Order of counting :(a) For odd signs the order is Zodiacal.(b) For even sign the order is reversed.

(c) If Rahu/Ketu is placed in any Kauluka, the assigned order will be reversed. This will meanthat :

(c.1) For odd signs, if Rahu/Ketu are placed in any Kauluka, the order will reversed.

(c.2) For even signs, if Rahu/Ketu are placed in any Kauluka, the order of counting willremain Zodiacal.(Ref. : Jaimini Sutra 3.3.66)

(v) Meaningofdiseasesofinternalorigin(linkedwith1stKauluka) :

The evils and diseases of internal origin, when a planet is placed in 1st Kauluka, may pointout to such possibilities like :

(a) The disease is in an internal organs(s).

(b) The cause of evils and diseases is not foreseen or known. This includes causes of such naturewhich originate on account of association of Fifth, Eighth or Badhak houses.

(c) The problems are hereditary in nature.

(vi) MeaningofdiseasesofExternalorigin(linkedwith2ndKauluka) :

The evils and diseases of external origin, when a planet is placed in 2nd Kauluka, may pointout to such possibilities like :

(a) The problems arise in account of wrong food habits, social and moral conduct and negligentbehaviour.

(b) By known causes, and enemies (Sixth and Ninth houses).

(c) Problems arising out due to accidents, non-payment of loans, wrong medication and treatmentignoring the advice of elders and social norms.

Each Kauluka of a Drekkana help to arrive ata precise cause, of course, notindependently, butwiththehelp ofotherDivisionalcharts.

(vii) Role of Kauluka will be illustrated with the help of Example horoscope I, given in the end of thispaper.

Moon(15°46') : It is placed in 2nd Kauluka of its Drekkana in even sign. Moon will giventhe results of 1st Kauluka — diseases on account of in internal origin.

Mars(12°5') : It is placed in 1st Kauluka of its Drekkana in even sign. Mars will givethe results of 2nd Kauluka diseases of external origin.

Page 9: Drek Kana

Drekkna.RTF - 9 - 3/19/2011

Rahu/Ketu(22°56') : Rahu/Ketu are in 1st Kauluka of even sign and will give the results of 1stKauluka.

Saturn(6°50') : It is in 2nd Kauluka of even sign and will give the results of 1st Kauluka.

Saturn, Rahu, Ketu and Moon will give the results of 1st Kauluka. The native's esinophils count increasedexcessively in Rahu/Rahu Dasa. This effects of the lungs, which is an internal part of the body. In the Dasa ofSaturn/Moon, the open heart surgery was performed on the native. Both planets are giving the results of 1stKauluka.

In Saturn/Mars Dasa, the native was operated for prostate gland successful. However, during convalesceperiod, on account of over-exertion he suffered severe hemorrhage (Mars conjunct Rahu) and saved with greatdifficulty (Mars is in sign aspect with Mercury, Venus and Jupiter). Both 1st and 2nd Kauluka played theirrespective part in full.

For want of space, it is not possible to discuss the other examples, the role of Kauluka as part of Drekkana isemphasized here in brief.

9. The Role of Dwadasamsa as ¼ part of each Drekkana

Each Drekkana contains four Dwadasamsa of 2°30’ each. Ist Dwadasamsa of each Drekkana is always is ofthe same sign as that of Drekkana itself. Other Dwadasamsa follow the sign in consecutive order. For example,Drekkana of Leo Rasi will commence from Leo Dwadasamsa and remaining three Dwadasamas will be of Virgo,Libra and Scorpio signs respectively.

Each Dwadasamsa is presided by a deity. 1st Dwadasamsa of every Drekkana is presided by Ganesha, 2ndDwadasamsa by Aswini Kumars, third Dwadasamsa by ‘Yama’ and forth Dwadasamsa will presided by Serpent(Sarpa).

Dr. Jagannath Rao in his book ‘Principles and Practice of Medical Astrology’ made the followingcomments:

“The Drekkana and Dwadasamsa charts must also be erected and studied. Sometimes you will find that Rasiand Navamsa Kundalis will not help in locating the disease. In such case study of Drekkana and Dwadasamsacharts will be of immense help.”

Example horoscope I : Saturn (6°49') is placed 3rd Dwadasamsa of Drekkana in Pisces sign presided by'Yama'. Similarly, Moon is placed in Dwadasamsa presided by 'Yama'. In para 6 above, it is explained that thenative's heart is in severe affliction. The open heart surgery was performed on native in Saturn/Moon period andwas saved from the Jaws of death with great difficulty. The effect of 'Yama' Dwadasamsa played his part in full.

The Dwadasamsa chart is also to be judged independently, but this is not the topic of discussion of thisarticle. I have tried to show the importance of Dwadasamsa as one fourth part Drekkana in this article in brief.

10. Timing and Nature of Death from Drekkana

(i) The native may die when Saturn transits the signs trine to the sign in which the 22nd (Khar)Drekkana is placed. (J.P. 5/59)

(ii) Death may take place when Jupiter transits in trine to the sign occupied by the lord of the risingDrekkana. (J.P. 5/59)

(iii) Any of the following Drekkana rising, at the time of birth or query, with malefic placed in it,and Moon is placed in eight house, may cause death, even if the native is healthy:

— Sarpa Drekkana (3rd of Cancer, 1st and 2nd of Scorpio and 3rd of Pisces);— Kolasya Drekkana (1st of Scorpio, Cancer and Capricorn);— Gridha Drekkana (3rd of Libra, 1st of Leo and Aquarius).

(iv) The lord of the Drekkana occupied by Saturn indicates the cause of death (P.M., Ch. 11, Sl. 14).If lord happens to be:

— Sun : due to fever;— Moon : swelling, tumour and Mahodara (dropsy);— Mars : boils, pox etc.;

Page 10: Drek Kana

Drekkna.RTF - 10 - 3/19/2011

— Mercury : disorder in breathing;— Jupiter : Gulma (a disease inside the stomach) and intense pain in body;— Venus : swelling and consumption;— Saturn : cough troubles and rheumatism.

If the Drekkana lord is in association with or aspected by Rahu, poison or infection willbe the cause of death. Ketu in similar situation gives death on account of undiagnosed disease.According to Parasara, Rahu and Ketu aspect 2nd, 5th, 7th and 9th houses counted in reverseorder from the houses of their placement. (Gemini does not recommend the aspect of Ketu)

(v) If lord of rising Drekkana is placed in the sign of debilitation or enemy house, or in 6th, 8th or12th houses in Rasi or Drekkana charts, the native dies due to serious accident or disease.Benefice influence mitigates the danger to some extent.

(vi) If lord of rising Drekkana is placed in 6th or 8th houses, devoid of benefice influence, thenative is of week will and has tendency to commit suicide. Such natives also suffer fromdepression.

(vii) The Dasa of the lord of Khar Drekkana, may prove Marka.

(viii) The planets in the first Drekkana, gives the results in the beginning of the Dasa, in the secondDrekkana in the middle of the Dasa and in the third Drekkana in the end of the Dasa. Theresults of the retrograde planet including Rahu/Ketu be considered in the reverse order. (SageParasara, BPH, Ch. 48, Sl. 3, 4)

(ix) Mr. Divakaruni Venkata Subba Rao mentioned his personal experience in a Souvenirpublished in 1982 :

“Whenever the lord of the 22nd Drekkana from Lagna and the 64th Navamsa lord to thenatal Moon happens to be the same planet or when those two Khars happen to transit a pointdeprived of an auspicious Bindu in Ashtakavarga after two Sodhanas (reductions) are carriedout and if that Kakachha happens to be owned by the transacting Khar, death is unavoidable.”

11. Shloka 78 and 79 of Chapter III of Jataka Parijata indicate the effects of affliction by planets onbody parts.

They are indicated below :

(i) There will be an ulcer or wound in the body part which is occupied by a malefic planet. However, there will be only some mark on such body parts, if occupied on aspected by benefice planetssimultaneously.

(ii) In case, malefic planet is in his own Rasi, Navamsa or in fixed Rasi and Navamsa, the mark or woundin the afflicted part of the body will be since birth. This also means that the organ will be week ordeceased since birth. In the example horoscope, Ketu is in Fixed sign, the native’s heart should beweek from birth, or inherited from parents.

(iii) Jataka Parijata has also given an idea about the cause of the problem as under :

— Saturn causes hurt on account of stone or wind disease (Rahu will act like Saturn);

— Mars causes hurt on account of fire, a missile, poison or serpent bites (Ketu will act like Mars);

— Mercury, if becomes malefic planet, causes hurt on account of fall from the height or by a blowreceived from a clod of some earthy substance;

— Sun, if becomes malefic, causes hurt from substance or a quadruped.

— Malefic Moon will cause harm from a horned creature or by liquids like acids etc.

— Placement weak and afflicted planets cause ulcers and make the afflicted body part deceased orweak, and becomes prone to diseases.

Allthe 36 Drekkanas are grouped in the category of Human (male & female), Serpent, Bird andQuadruped animals. TheplacementofMoon in aspecificcategoryofDrekkanaindicates thethinkingandnatureoftheperson:

— Moon in Ayudh Drekkana makes the native violent, does not tolerate opposition, vanquishes hisenemies.

— Moon in female Drekkana makes the person gentle in behaviour, loves art, culture, music and goodthings in life.

— Moon in Serpent Drekkana makes the person full of anger, revengeful and deceitful.— Moon in Quadruped Drekkana makes the native full of animal instinct, indiscriminate sexual

13. Rasi Tulya Drekkana

The sign adopts the traits and nature of the house in which it is placed. The sign will carry the nature of thehouse with it, in respective Divisional charts. The phenomenon is called 'Rasi Tulya Drekkana' or 'Bhava-Suchaka-Drekkana'.

When a planet placed in a Drekkana, which belongs to the sign placed in the 8th (eighth) house of Natalchart, the signification of this planet will suffer and give adverse results and vise-verse.

The above rules is similarly applicable to other houses. If the auspicious houses are involved, the auspiciousresults shall accrue and vise-versa.

14. Khar and Mrityu (Death) Drekkana

In Drekkana chart, the signs will also represent each Drekkana placed in 12 houses. The sign which isplaced in the eighth (8th) house of Drekkana chart will have the potential and capacity to give maximum harm, adversities and even death.

Khar Drekkana : 22nd Drekkana counted from the rising Drekkana in Birth chart, is called KharDrekkana. This is represented by the sign placed in the 8th house in Drekkana chart. The lord of this Drekkana iscalled Kharesh and has a potential to kill.

The planets, which are placed in 8th house of Rasi chart from Ascendant and simultaneously also in 8thhouse in Drekkana chart, are placed in Khar Drekkana.

Page 13: Drek Kana

Drekkna.RTF - 13 - 3/19/2011

The Kharesh and planets placed in Khar Drekkana give adverse results during their Dasas as well as whensubjected to adverse transits.

MrityuDrekkanas: The Bhachakra (Rasi Chakra) contains 36 Drekkanas, out of which three (3) Drekkanabelong to the same sign. The three Drekkanas belonging to the sign of Khar Drekkana are called MrityuDrekkanas. One each Mrityu Drekkana is placed in 4th, 8th and 12th houses of Rasi chart.

The planets, which are placed in 4th and 12th houses of Rasi chart and simultaneously placed in 8th housein Drekkana chart, are placed in Mrityu Drekkana.

Karka planets placed in Mrityu Drekkana cause hardships and unnatural deaths to relatives indicated bythem e.g. theSun in Mrityu Drekkanawillcausesomedangertofatherand KharDrekkanabothtofatherandself.

15. Effects of Drekkana according to their nature

The Drekkanas are also designated as Kroor, Watery, Saumya and Mixed (refer Shloka 113 to 117 ofChapter 9 of Jataka Parijata) :

16. Other uses of Drekkanas and Drekkana chart in Predictive Astrology

(1) Drekkana indicate velour, comforts, prosperity, including inclinations tendencies and nature of thenative.

(2) Determination of brothers and sisters.

(3) Drekkana plays a prominent role at the time of commencement/occurrence of any action/event likejourney, litigation, purchase house, accident etc.

(4) Drekkana indicates the nature of thief when a question is put about the loss of an article by theft.

17. Assessment of Drekkana Chart

(1) Results of placement of planets in different Drekkanas as well as the effect of rising Drekkana aregiven in detail in various Jatak-Granths. The same are not being reproduced here. The nature andcategories of Drekkanas are indicated in this article. The nature of Drekkana will be felt by nativethrough rising Drekkana and planets placed therein. For example, if rising Drekkana is Ayudh, and

Page 14: Drek Kana

Drekkna.RTF - 14 - 3/19/2011

moon is placed therein, the native will be of violent nature and fighting disposition. The similarposition in Vihag (Bird) Drekkana will make the native of wondering nature and unreliable.

(2) If the rising Drekkana lord is placed in Kendra houses (1,4,7,10) or exalted, either in Drekkana chartor natal chart, the native becomes rich.

(3) If the rising Drekkana is aspected by its lord or by benefice planets, it increases good qualities in thenative. Similarly, association or aspect of malefic will increase bad tendencies.

(4) If the rising Drekkana lord is in its own sign in Drekkana and as well as natal chart, the native belongsto a martial family and the native will be inclined to pursue such professions (means that the nativewill be full of velour and courage).

(5) If rising Drekkana lord is placed in 6th, 8th or 12th houses in natal chart with some malefic, theperson suffers death or serious injury.

18. Determination of brother & sisters with the help of Drekkana chart.

Co-borns are seen from the third house (Younger) and eleventh house (elder) from Lagna and Karka Marsand Jupiter respectively. In case of sisters, Venus also acts as Karka in addition to Mars and Jupiter. Arudh Lagnaalso plays prominent role. These houses from Lagna determine their physical presence (body) while from theArudh Lagna their numbers, ruling star, etc. are ascertained. The Rasi chart has to be examined thoroughly fordetermination of co-borns. In this, article, role of Drekkana chart will be discussed.

The strength of Drekkana Lagna and its lord are of prime importance in assessment of co-borns. Detailsregarding individual co-borns are seen from the Drekkana chart. The first younger co-born is seen from the lord ofthe third house, next from the lord of fifth house (i.e. third from the third) and so on. And similarly, first elder(immediate) co-borns is seen from the lord of 11th house, from Drekkana Lagna. Next elder co-born is seen fromthe lord of ninth house (i.e. eleventh from the eleventh) and so on.

The following rules will be useful :

(1) If Drekkana Lagna and its lord is in auspicious influence, the native will have good relations andcomforts with the co-borns. Malefic influence will indicate problems to and also from co-borns. Therelationship between the Lagna lord and Drekkana Lagna lord will indicate the relationship of thenative with his co-borns in general.

(2) The relationship between Lagna lord and lord of the house representing the individual co-born, willdecide the relationship with that individual co-born.

(3) If the Drekkana lord, representing an individual co-born, is well placed, conjunct or aspected bybenefic both in Natal as well as Drekkana chart, this co-born live a long and healthy life. If otherwisethey suffer and are short lived.

(4) The nature of co-born will be influenced according to Drekkana in which lord representing him willbe placed.

(5) If both lords (Lagna lord and lord of Drekkana representing co-born in Drekkana) are placed infriendly houses, then relations with co-born are close and intimate.

(6) The sex of the co-born is seen from the lord of the sign ruling the individual co-born in Drekkanachart. If the lord is exalted or conjoin male planets (Sun, Jupiter, Rahu, Mars) the issue is male. If thelord is debilitated or conjoins female planets (Moon, Ketu, Venus), the co-born is female. Saturn andMercury are eunuch planets, they will give results due to other influences also. But Saturn generallyrepresents female and Mercury represents male co-born respectively. If the lord is neither placed in itsexaltation or debilitation sign nor conjoined with any planet, then the sex of the co-born is determinedfrom the nature of sign occupied in Drekkana chart.

Male birth signs are Aries, Cancer, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Pisces.

Female birth signs are Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius.

Page 15: Drek Kana

Drekkna.RTF - 15 - 3/19/2011

(7) The following factors should also be considered :

(i) If lord representing co-born is placed in Male Drekkana, it will favour male co-born or if inFemale Drekkana will favour Female co-born. Male Drekkana are I, II of Aries, II and III ofTaurus, II & III of Gemini, I, III of Cancer, all three of Leo, II of Virgo, all three of Libra, III ofScorpio, I & III of Sagittarius, I and II of Capricorn, I and III of Aquarius, I & III of Pisces. These 24 Drekkanas have affinity to Male character and remaining Drekkana represent Femalecharacter. While deciding the sex of co-born, its lord will be governed more prominently by theRasi in which it is placed, but in doubtful cases, Drekkana will also have its say. The sign andaspects on the representative house will also influence the assessment.

(ii) The Rasi aspect on the lord in Drekkana chart should be considered as this also affects the sexof co-born. If this lord falls on the axis of Rahu/Ketu, this may indicate youngest co-born.

(iii) An assessment of total number of co-borns will be made after full assessment of natal andDrekkana chart. Individual co-born will be governed more from representative houses and theirlords in Drekkana chart.

19. Effects of Drekkana on commencement of occurrence of an event

Drekkana should be considered at the time of commencement or occurrence of an activity or event. VarahaMihira says in his Yatra Patala, “The results of the rising Drekkana at the time of Journey must be predicted withreference to their form, actions and nature.”

(1) If the Drekkana is agreeable, bearing flowers, fruits, gems or treasures or if they are conjoined oraspected by benefice and their lords, the traveler will gain handsomely on account of journey.

(2) If journey is commenced in Ayudh (armed) Drekkana, the traveler will be victorious, if Drekkana isaspected by malefic, he will be defeated, dishonoured, involve in litigation or accident.

(3) If journey is commenced in Sarpa (Bhujanga) on in Nigada (Pasha) Drekkana, the traveler may bedisgraced, deceived, imprisoned. He may even die if such Drekkana is in the influence of malefic.Benefic will ward-off the evil happenings.

(4) In Chaturthapada Drekkana, if aspected by malefic, no purchase of cattles or vehicles should be made.

(5) Vaidyanath in Jataka-Parijata — Chapter IX, Shloka 112 to 116 provide basic guideline for wider andcomprehension use of Drekkana :

(i) Cruel Drekkana will give bad and miserable conditions and events.(ii) Beneficial Drekkana will be good and give success in life.(iii) When Drekkana is evil and occupied by benefics or vise-versa, the results will be mixed.(iv) In most adverse situation, evil Drekkana is occupied and aspected by malefic planets, with no

influence of benefics, the person will suffer miseries, decease, defeats, poverty, losses, disagreements and various diseases.

(v) In most favourable conditions, a benefice Drekkana is in the influence of benefics, with nomalefic influence, will yield to good returns like eminently successful, happiness, begetdistinguished progeny, attainment of good position and command, great aspect and influence.

(vi) The above results will be felt by the native in the Major, sub or sub-sub periods of planetsplaced in such Drekkanas.

20. Nature of Thieves by Drekkana

Prithuyashas in his Shatpanchsika has given following hints in the question of the loss of an article by theft :

(1) The nature of the article lost is ascertained by the rising Navamsa. The Navamsa of each sign hasvarious significations and governs various articles. In odd signs, moveable Navamsa govern minerals,fixed-vegetable origin, and dual-living being. This order is reversed in the case of even signs.

(2) The rising Drekkana will indicate the nature and form of the thieves.

Page 16: Drek Kana

Drekkna.RTF - 16 - 3/19/2011

(3) The Ascendant, at the time of query, will indicate direction in which stolen article has been taken andthe place from which it is lost and the locality in which it is taken.

(4) Once place is identified, Drekkana will again indicate possible location of missing article. If the firstDrekkana of Rasi be rising, the article has been hidden near the gate of the house (entrance), if themiddle Drekkana be rising, the article is somewhere in the middle portion of the house, if the lastDrekkana is rising, in backward of the house.

(5) The lord of the Lagna indicate the age and cast of the thieves

The details for handling such queries could be mastered from any standard book on the subject. In the queryof lost article by theft, the rising Drekkana plays the important role in identifying the thieves as well as gives anidea about the location of the article in the place of hiding.

21. Conclusion

1. FirstStep : The natal chart contains the key of all events likely to happen in native's life. Bhachakracontains 12 Zodiac sign, 12 houses, 27 Nakshatra and 'amsas' of each divisional charts, like 108Navamsas, 36 Drekkanas, 144 Dwadasamsas, 72 Kaulukas, 60 Trimsamsa and so on. Each 'amsa'carries a different meaning in Bhachakra. Therefore, it is very important to examine the natal chartthoroughly with respect to placement of planets in signs, houses, Nakshatra and 'amsas'.

2. Second Step : The results of placement of planets and other sensitive points are to be examined inNavamsas, Drekkanas, Dwadasamsas and amsa's of other Vargas in natal chart. This will provide vitalinformation for predictive purposes, which would otherwise be obscure. This is amply explained inthis article.

3. Third Step : 'Rasi-Tulya-Amsa' and 'Amsa-Tulya-Rasi' is an important principle while co-relatingthe results of natal chart with respective division chart. The brief use of this principle in shown in para13 and 14 of this article.

4. Fourth Step : Representative divisional charts should also be examined separately. The use ofDrekkana chart is shown, in this article, for determining the sex of individual co-born as well as theirwell being. The appropriate Dasas are also applied to Divisional charts. Such Dasas amplify theresults specifically, and more clearly in representative field, which are sometimes not clearlyidentifiable in natal chart.

5. Fifth Step : There should be integrated approach while considering; firstly, natal chart, secondly, location of various 'amsas' of Vargas in natal chart, and thirdly, Divisional charts separately beforearriving on final judgment.

(1) The 2nd Drekkana of moveable sing (Capricorn) is rising occupied by Ketu, Jupiter and Moon. ThisDrekkana is aspected by both Rasi and planetary aspect in Birth chart by Saturn. This makes theDrekkana Lagna stronger.

(2) Bhoga Drekkana, is rising, represented by Rajas Guna, Manushya, deity Brahma, Rishi Durvasa. Thisis human Male Drekkana, of Saumya category.

(3) As second Drekkana is rising, the parts of the middle portion of the body will be representedpredominantly by Bhachakra. Similarly, as Drekkana of moveable sign is rising, fixed signs will alsorepresent the trunk portion of the body.

Mars and Rahu are afflicting third house, which Represents lungs and respiratory system innatal chart. The native suffered from esinophils on commencement of Rahu Dasa.

Ninth house is occupied by Ketu and aspects by Mars, Rahu and Saturn. As Ninth houserepresents left ventricle and auricle of the heart of in the middle portion of the body (from both countsas 2nd Drekkana is rising, and fixed sign is placed in Ninth house). The native has undergone heartsurgery in Saturn Dasa Moon sub-period. (Table 6)

It may seen body parts are identified both with help of Kalapurusha as well rising Drekkana. It may also be seen that rising Drekkana is afflicted by Ketu and its lord Saturn by Mars and Rahu.

(4) In Navamsa chart Ketu is afflicting forth house in cancer sign. This also adds to heart problems, Ketuis in moveable Navamsa and therefore affecting the living being. (The order is reversed in evensigns.)

(5) Both Saturn and Moon are in "Yama" where as Ketu and Jupiter are in "Aswini Kumar" Dwadasamsa.Jupiter has played the pivotal role in saving the life of the native.

(6) Saturn aspects both Moon and Ketu in Birth chart and is conjoined in Drekkana chart. Saturn aspectsboth Sun and Ketu in Dwadasamsa chart. Saturn and Moon had created death like situation being in'Yama' Dwadasamsa in their Dasa period. Whereas Jupiter provided the healing touch being in'Aswinikumaras' Dwadasamsa by his association with both Saturn and Moon.

(7) Saturn is placed in Drekkana of dual Rasi. Saturn is afflicted by Mars in Drekkana which is also indual Rasi Drekkana. Dual Rasi Drekkana are representing the more prominently prostate glandlocated in lower portion of the Body. The native was operated for prostate gland (Saturn in seventhhouse of Kalapurusha and Mars the eighth lord afflicted by Rahu) and was saved with the jaws ofdeath with grace of god (Mars is in the Dwadasamsa of lord Ganesha).

(1) She has a elder brother. In Drekkana chart 11th house lord Saturn is exalted in seventh house andaspected by Moon and Jupiter (Karka of elder brother).

(2) Though she is now running seventh year, but has no younger sibling. 3rd house lord is placed in signLeo which may give a younger sibling, but the depositor SUN is placed in sixth house with MaleficMars. This has reduced the chances for younger sibling. In Rasi chart and Drekkana chart Mars ishemmed in between Sun and Saturn.

(3) Though Rasi chart appears to be reasonably strong. Navamsa Lagna is occupied by Saturn. InDrekkana chart Lagnesh is placed in sixth house along with Sun and Eight house is occupied by Ketu.Dwadasamsa Lagna is afflicted by Rahu. She fell ill in Sun/Moon/Mars period (commenced on 9-7-2002) and remained ill unto the end of Sun/Moon/Rahu (ended on 16-8-2002). The recovery waspossible only on commencement of sub-sub period of Jupiter. As Lagna lord is strong and Lagna isaspected by Jupiter and Drekkana Lagna is occupied by Moon and Jupiter, the commencement ofDasa of Sun/Moon/Jupiter could only help.

I am not giving more examples for want of space. This paper is written to emphasise the important andsignificant role of Drekkana in predictive astrology.

Navamsa and Dwadasamsa charts do have their separate significance and importance, but when these twoVargas are considered as part of each Drekkana, they impart very unique direction and information.
