MONTH 6: In Action Tests at Training/Preliminary Level
Congratulations!! You have made it - we are at the last month of Mastering the Training Level/Preliminary level dressage horse!
Firstly - full credit to you! It’s not a normal person that sticks to and stays committed through their dressage journey!
Now it’s time to bring it all together! We have been working on the German Training Scale and Rider Success Scale in relation to the Training Level/Preliminary Level horse.
Mastery of Training Level/Preliminary Part 5: In Action Tests
Dressage Mastery Academy
Module 2: Mastering Training Level/
Preliminary
To recap, your Training Level/Preliminary Level horse should be:
GERMAN TRAINING SCALE
Topic Description: Training Level/Preliminary Level Horse
Rhythm Your horse will be in a much better rhythm than when you started the 6 months of this module. He will go more alone and stay at the rhythm you want with adjustment from light half halts. You will have a clear 4 beat walk, 2 beat trot that stays the same rhythm - not faster then slower, you will also have your horse happy to travel forward and carry you. You will have a 3 beat canter with jump and the horse will be happy to stay in it.
Losgelassenheit Your horse wants to work with you and accepts your aids and lets them through, the horse is accepting of the demands you ask of it and finds all the Preliminary/Training Level work easy.
Contact Your horse accepts the contact and remains happily on the bit and on the vertical in all movements including transitions.
Impulsion The horse is starting to learn to push in lengthened strides and happily doing transitions between the gaits and in the gait without running on the forehand.
Straightness Your horse is accepting of the shoulder fore to straighten him on the long sides and can do a straight centreline and halt.
Collection The horse is starting to collect for a few strides before downward transitions and is accepting and listening and reacting to the half halt.

RIDER SUCCESS SCALE
Topic Description: Training Level/Preliminary Horse
Seat You are still working on mastering your seat and using your weight and movements to influence the way the horse is going. In particular you will work on getting your seat to the next level of mastery to really show off lovely trot-canter transitions.
Mindset You will enjoy training young horses, you will relish the challenge of teaching a horse to learn the German Training scale and work with you. You will enjoy your training and understand it wont always go smoothly - in fact most sessions won’t go how you want them - but don’t worry, every session is getting you closer to where you want to go.
Contact Your hands will be getting more still and your knowledge and skill to get a horse into a steady contact will be improved.
Transitions Like I mentioned your transitions - trot-halt-trot and trot-canter will be worked on a lot in this module and you will get them to the next level of mastery.
Yielding You can get your horse to move off your inside or outside leg to straighten them and the horse accepts the shoulder fore to keep the horse straight.
Half Halt You apply the half halt and the horse reacts and responds by sitting back on the haunches, lightening the forehand and becoming lighter and more reactive to you.
Remember this is where we are headed - to master the German Training Scale and the Rider Success Scale, from Preliminary/Training level all the way to Grand Prix level dressage. Be patient with where you are in your journey - you won’t have the seat of Isabel Werth, who has been a Grand Prix dressage rider for 20 years, if you have only just started riding - but it is something that you can work towards!
Let’s make a commitment now to improving throughout your journey and mastering the German Training and Rider Success scales at each level. The scales will mean different things at different points in the journey - collection will mean a different thing in Preliminary (Training) level dressage than it will in Grand Prix level dressage.

Goals for this month
When you compete you should enjoy the test of performing with your horse at that time, on that day! :)
The test on the day is merely a reflection of where you are at in your training and if you need to take your standards and performances to the next level. Remember - they are looking for perfection, but perfection is not something you will ever get to, as when you reach what you thought was perfection, you will ask for something else, something more!
To help you after every test, over the next couple of pages there are the some tables for you to fill out. They are the Australian Preliminary tests 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 - however, the Training Level (USA) Test 1, Test 2 and Test 3 are the same.
You want to look through the marks that you typically get on your tests, and think about the ways that you can improve your mark in that part of the test by 1 mark, so that your test slowly increases in percentages!!

So that you can take a look at tests that I have done on Gretchen, my Training Level/Preliminary Level warmblood mare, as well as tests that my students have done, I have included a couple of them below. None of them are perfect - I didn’t get 100% in any of them - but it is all part of the journey! When you follow me into Elementary/First Level and Novice/Second level you will see that I push my standards higher and high as I go along.
This is all about bringing it together, so whether or not you feel you are ready for a competition or not, I really encourage you to go out and try at a competition. There is nothing quite like getting out there and being under the pressure of having to do something perfectly in front of a judge - RIGHT NOW! This tends to be where it all falls apart! Your horse might feel really good in the warm up - and then you go into the ring and it doesn’t happen :)
I don’t care how good a rider you are at home, how good your work is at home, I want you to prove it to me and get out there in the arena and compete!! Who cares about what other people think - don’t waste your energy on that. You are out there to compete because of the love of it, the fun of it, and to test where you and your horse are in your dressage training journey.
Start enjoying the journey!
I trust you have enjoyed and you are inspired by the last month of Module 2 and you are ready for First Level/Elementary Level dressage which we start next month!
