CREW Drexel University2007-08

THIS IS DREXEL CREWDrexel crew is a Division I varsity program with a 60-year tradition of excellence on Boathouse Row in Philadelphia. More than 25rowers comprise Drexel crew each year ready to compete for victory in the varsity and second varsity heavyweight eights at thehistoric Dad Vail Regatta. Most of Drexel's rowers are recruited from powerhouse programs in the Mid-Atlantic and New Englandregions with some from across the country as well. Each season a few freshmen with no rowing experience are selected fromtryouts to join the Drexel crew.

Drexel crew is a cross-section of University academic life, with athletes majoring in everything from bio-medical engineering, tofashion, history, and design. Many Drexel rowers are preparing for professional school and academic excellence is commonplace. The Dragon crew works with the full support of Drexel's sport medicine, equipment and academic service offices, as the quest forDad Vail gold is a team effort by the committed athletic department.

From October to May the home of Drexel rowing is the Hollenbeck House, Boathouse Row #4; where our rowers are part of avibrant rowing community that annually produces college, high school and international champions from the lively Schuylkill. Lessthen a mile from campus, each day the rowers run or bike into Fairmount park to launch their day's training. Several times a weekthe rowers gather at the Walter Spiro Varisty Weight Room in the Daskalakis Athletic Center for their specially designed weighttraining program. The highlight of the fall season is the Head of the Schuylkill, which is the largest one-day regatta in the world.Another fall team tradition is the Drexel Crew Triathlon, a row-bike-run event where Drexel rowers battle it out for title of thefittest athlete. Following Thanksgiving break, Drexel crew moves to full-time indoor training at the Daskalakis Athletic Centerwhere the rowers take to the ergometers for the winter.

By late January the team is back on the river and in final preparation for spring racing. After several weeks of long rowing andweek long spring break training camp, the crew begins its racing season. The season is comprised of a blend of large regattas andsmall, fierce match races. Two annual highlights include the Kerr Cup Regatta which is hosted by Drexel in competition withconference rivals, and the Bergen Cup Regatta which is the "City Championship" of the Philadelphia Dad Vail Schools.

Finally, in the second weekend of May Philadelphia and the Schuylkill attract crews from around the country for the Dad VailChampionship at Drexel's home course. Following the Dad Vail Regatta, Drexel also competes in the I.R.A. Championship for menand has sent crews to the Henley Regatta. Most recently, the 2005 women's varsity eight raced in the senior eight event at thewomen's Henley Regatta, capping their championship season with a 21-3 overall record.

Historic Boathouse Row is home to the Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia, perhaps the most vibrant rowing community in America. Eachmorning and evening scores of shells launch from its slips as athletes ranging from Olympian to novice take to the water. Everyseasonable weekend of the fall, spring and summer a regatta takes place on the Schuylkill. The river is home to the Dad Vail and theStotesbury Cup, the largest college and high school regattas in the world, as well as the Head of the Schuylkill, second in size only to theHead of the Charles among fall races.

Founded in 1858, the Schuylkill Navy is the oldest amateur athletic governing body in the United States. It comprises the 10 clubs ofBoathouse Row: Fairmount Rowing Association, Crescent Boat Club, Bachelors Barge Club, University Barge Club, Malta Boat Club, VesperBoat Club, College Boat Club, Undine Barge Club and Philadelphia Girl's Rowing Club. Representatives from each club meet monthly asthis unique council and its commodore oversee the liveliest rowing river in the world.

Drexel’s BoathouseDrexel's home, The Hollenbeck House (or "#4", as it is simply known on the row) is the storied 150-year-old institution where theSchuylkill Navy is headquartered. Drexel rows from two spacious bays which store its fleet of eight-oared rowing shells.

For many decades #4 was also the home of the National Association of Amateur Oarsmen, the National Governing Body for all rowing inthe United States. In 1982 the organization was reformed as the United States Rowing Association and moved to Indianapolis. As aremnant of the old N.A.A.O. or the Philadelphia Rowing Society, the organization still meets at #4, which is typical of Boathouse Row andPhiladelphia's devotion to tradition.

The Dad Vail RegattaDrexel University is proud to be called a "Vail" school, taking its place in the 70-year history of the Dad Vail Regatta and playing a role inthe Association's exciting future.

The Dad Vail Regatta is an affiliation of 70 rowing programs that come to Philadelphia every May to race in the nation's largest collegiateregatta, battling for the title of Dad Vail Champion. Because it is an association of rowing programs rather than an athletic conference, its long history and current prestige are often unknown.

Who and What is Dad Vail?

"Dad" Vail was the nickname of a revered rowing coach: Harry Emerson Vail. Coach Vail came of age as a professional sculler in the latenineteenth century. Like many other professionals he retired to collegiate coaching, and by the roaring '20s when he developed theUniversity of Wisconsin program, he was the oldest active crew coach, thus called "Dad" by his younger colleagues.

In 1934 Penn, Marietta, Rutgers and Manhattan, started an association to promote competition for emerging crew programs. Because ofhis great work with the early struggles of Wisconsin, they decided to name the trophy after "Dad" Vail, as an example for other youngcrews. Not much later, there were 40 schools vying to win the "Vails." Originally a venue for new programs, the race became a majorchampionship in its own right and most of the original members still return to Philadelphia in quest of "Dad" Vail's cup.

The Modern Vail

By the 1980s the Vail had become an enormous athletic and social event. Crowds of 30,000 filled the east bank of the Schuylkill andstood shoulder-to-shoulder for a half mile as hundreds of crews raced. Two intense days of racing winnowed champions from fields of30-40 boats in each event. What started as an introductory event was now a historic tradition as Dad Vail crews waged decade-oldrivalries. Since the early 1990s the crowds have tamed down a bit from the rock-concert atmosphere of the previous decades, but thecompetition has only grown: in 1996 over 100 crews came to race as Vail schools. The Dad Vail Champion is now a prestigious title andmany of the medalist crews continue their season at the Royal Henley Regatta.

Women and the Vail

The Dad Vail Association was on the forefront of the growth of women's rowing. The first Women's Vail Champion was named in 1978which was one of the earliest major sporting events to include women. When the NCAA recognized women's crew 20 years later, the Vailwas ready for explosion of Division I rowing, and the Dad Vail Women's Championship is now a prestigious Division I rowing title. In1996 almost 60 Division I women's crews competed at the Dad Vail Regatta, with crew representing the CAA, the Patriot League, the BigEast, the Atlantic 10, and the Atlantic Coast Conference among others. Separate events for crews from other divisions were added as thelevel of competition intensified.

The Kerr Cup RegattaThe Kerr Cup Regatta was established by Drexel University Alumni in 1967 to honor former Drexel Crew Coach, Dr. Thomas Kerr, Jr. Dr.Kerr passed away in 1988 at the age of 78. Dr. Kerr is credited with starting the Drexel crew program in 1957, serving as coach until1968. He also served as the crew’s team physician and surgeon. He competed in the 1932 Olympics in the four-oared boat and was amember of the national champion eight-oared Shell-Penn A.C. in 1931.

The winners of the men’s varsity eight race are awarded the Kerr Cup. The winners of the women’s varsity eight race are awarded theLela H. Kerr Cup named in the honor of Dr. Kerr’s wife.

The Kerr Cup Regatta also features the Colonial Athletic Association Crew Championship. Seven CAA schools (Delaware, Drexel, GeorgeMason, UNC Wilmington, Old Dominion, Virginia Commonwealth and William & Mary) compete for men’s and women’s team titles.

Drexel at the 2005 Henley Regatta

www.drexeldragons.com | 2007-08 Crew | Drexel University 15

Drexel's first-ever appearance at the historic Henley Women'sRegatta ended as the Drexel women's varsity eight lost aheartbreaker in the quarterfinals to the senior eight from theNeptune Racing Club in Dublin, Ireland. The 2005 Drexel women'sheavyweight eight was arguably the most successful women's crewteam in Drexel history as it won the Braxton Regatta, the Kerr Cup,and was named champions of the Colonial Athletic Association. Inaddition, the Drexel women's crew turned heads by taking home abronze medal in the heavyweight varsity eight event at the DadVail Regatta, where over 115 college teams participated.

The 18th Henley Women's Regatta featured single-eliminationraces at the historic Henley course, which is 1,500 meters (500meters shorter than that of the Dad Vail Regatta). The race formatis a unique one-on-one race on the middle Thames River. A "brawl"as the local fans like to describe it, which is recognized as themost historic crew course in the world and served as the crew sitefor two Olympic Games. The Drexel women's eight was competingfor the prestigious Jeffries Cup against international club anduniversity teams. In 1972, the Drexel men's straight four, Dad Vailgold medalist, competed in the Henley Royal Regatta, howeverDrexel's entry in 2005 marked the first time a women's crew teamcompeted in the event.

In what turned out to be the fastest heat of the weekend, Drexeltook the lead after 200 meters over Neptune as the crews werepassing historic Temple Island. With the famous Henley launchand chief umpire following the boats providing play-by-playcommentary over the public address system, Drexel pulled aheadstretching to a one-half length lead over Neptune. On a day thatset record hot temperatures and with a large crowd cheering theteams on, Neptune pulled within two feet at the mid-way point ofthe racecourse.

Going into the final stretch, coxswains from both boats pleadedtheir teams to go even faster. Neptune made one decisive pushwhich Drexel had difficulty matching. Over the final 100 metersDrexel began to close in as Neptune protected their lead of one-half length. In the end Drexel lost by less than two seconds to theexperienced international elite team in the senior eight division. The race was the fastest in its bracket, providing the Drexel crewwith a bittersweet consolation.

The Henley Regatta closed out a week of celebrations with areception at the only rowing museum in the world. Rowing in thepicturesque town of Henley, in front of a pageantry that all ofthose who ever attended a Henley Regatta will undoubtedlyremember, was truly a great accomplishment of the Drexel crew.
