Drinking From My Saucer By John Paul Moore
I've never made a fortune and it's probably too late now. But I don't worry about that much, I'm happy anyhow.
And as I go along life's way, I'm reaping better than I sowed. I'm drinking from my saucer, 'Cause my cup has overflowed.
I don't have a lot of riches, and sometimes the going's tough.
But I've got loved ones around me, and that makes me rich enough.
I thank God for his blessings, and the mercies He's bestowed. I'm drinking from my saucer, 'cause my cup has overflowed.
I remember times when things went wrong, My faith wore somewhat thin. But all at once the dark clouds broke, and the sun peeped through again.
So God, help me not to gripe about the tough rows that I've hoed.
I'm drinking from my saucer, 'Cause my cup has overflowed.
If God gives me strength & courage, when the way grows steep & rough. I'll not ask for other blessings, I'm already blessed enough.
And may I never be too busy, to help others bear their loads.
Then I'll keep drinking from my saucer, 'Cause my cup has overflowed.

Giving Thanks—How It All Began
The Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock on December
11, 1620. Only 46 of the original 102 survived the
winter. The Wampanoags helped the settlers build
homes, gather food, hunt, fish, plant, and harvest
crops. The harvest of 1621 was so bountiful the
remaining colonists celebrated. The Wampanoags and
the Pilgrims feasted for three days. The celebration
was more of a traditional English harvest festival than the
Thanksgiving we know today. It isn't known if turkey
was served. The word “turkey" as used by the Pilgrims
meant any wild owl. It is also unlikely pumpkin pie was
served although boiled pumpkin was on the menu.
The feast also included fish, berries, lobster, clams,
wild goose, duck, and venison.
On June 20, 1676, the town council of Charlestown,
Massachusetts voted to proclaim June 29 as a day of
thanksgiving. This celebration was in part to recognize
the colonists' recent victory over the natives and as
such the Native Americans were not included in the
festivities. October 1777 marked the first time all 13
colonies joined in a thanksgiving celebration
commemorating victory over the British at Saratoga. In 1789, George
Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving, although many felt
the hardships suffered by the Pilgrims did not warrant a national holiday. *
In 1863, President Lincoln proclaimed the last
Thursday in November as a national day of
Thanksgiving. President Franklin Roosevelt later
moved the date to the next to the last Thursday in an
effort of creating a longer Christmas shopping season.
Public up roar caused it to be moved back to the
original date and in 1941 the U.S. Congress
sanctioned the fourth Thursday in November as the
legal holiday.
* It is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the evidence of Almighty God, to
obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly implore his
Protection." George Washington in his Presidential Proclamation, Oct 3,
1789.
