Murphy’s law. You know it. It is funny when it happens to someone else and when it happens to you.....well, just depends on what happened.

I received a call about a car I was selling. It was bittersweet. It is nice to have a classic convertible in the stable. It is mostly done, we really do enjoy the hell out of it. But, it makes more sense to let it go if the price is right. The buyer, a Frenchman seemed very motivated on the phone. He was look-ing for a car for a friend in France. He was looking right around the price range I was selling it for. The 1970 Mustang Convert-ible may be on the way to a new continent.

This car, has been a bit of a headache. From the paint and body work to other mechani-cal issues, I keep throwing money into a car that I never really planned on throwing money at. We love the car as it is our first convertible, but, if the money was right,

she is gone baby gone. So in preparation of showing the car, Heather and I spent all morning cleaning and polishing. The new top not only looked great but worked per-fectly, a major selling point for vintage con-vertibles. It was a stunning day and it was truly convertible weather. I was ready to make a deal!

I met the potential buyer at my office off of the 101 freeway. He knew a lot about cars and was quick to point out every single thing about the car. He was nice about it, but he did know his stuff. After spending about an hour looking over the car, we went for a spin. We hopped on the freeway and the car just purred. The overdrive transmis-sion worked perfectly and we were cruis-ing at 65mph effortlessly. I was thinking “oh this is a done deal.” When we got back to my office parking lot, he snapped more pictures and said he thought this would be the car. He was almost sure of it and I was counting the money in my head, this is go-ing to be a good day. So after a few pics and videos, he says “one last thing, let’s see that top work.” Using his phone to record the video, I said “no problem.” I started the car to give the top a little more juice so it would go up as smooth as possible, this is the final test and the car is sold...oh baby, this car is

outta here! With the rpm’s held at 1500, I reached to the switch, he was holding the camera and.....and...drumroll please........THE DAMN TOP WOULDN’T GO UP!

I tried everything. The top refuse to work or even make a noise. What happened? It just worked at the house, it always worked, from the day we owned it! It had to go out right then and there. You have got to be kid-ding me. Old man Murphy and his damn law. I headed home, took out the back seats, a friend came over and the power was there from the switch, the motor died. The deal died.

The Frenchman found a 1971 Convertible for a bit less then I was asking, and it was headed for France. My car, again torn apart, it getting yet another new part that I did not want to buy and install.

The moral of the story? I suppose it makes me think of a quote from The Outlaw Josey Wales, “Endeavor to persevere.” So now I get to learn about convertible top motors, hydraulics, and not counting my chickens before they hatch.

Thanks Mr. Murphy.

THIRD ANNUAL GREYSTONE THIRD ANNUAL GREYSTONE MANSION CONCOURS D’ELEGANCEBy Frank Filipponio

(Beverly Hills, CA – May 6, 2012) The City of Beverly Hills third annual Greystone Mansion Concours d’Elegance returned to the historic former Doheny Family Estate May 6, celebrat-ing more than 150 vintage, rare and unique automobiles and motorcycles. The Greystone is fast becoming one of the most prestigious concours events in the United States, attract-ing cars from many well-known collections and museums.

In fact, the Greystone Mansion Concours d’Elegance is one of only a handful of car shows in the United States that has the distinction of being designated as an official “Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens” (FIVA) event. The quality and excellence of the vehicles on display showed that this was well-deserved. From David Sydorick’s 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Short Chassis Zagato Spyder that served as the poster car for this year’s event, to the most original 1939 Bugatti Type 57C Coupe around, the cars were truly world-class.

The Concours featured 13 automobile classes including Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Porsche, Pre-War American, Post-War American, Ferrari, Corvette, Pre-war Rolls Royce, Rolls-Royce/Bentley, European Classics, Post-War Brit-ish, Italian Sports, and Ford Performance. Highlights included a 1954 Alfa Romeo 1900 SS Zagato, one of 39 ever made; a 1972 Fer-rari 365 GTB/4 'Daytona' originally owned by legendary American gun manufacturer William Ruger; a 1925 Hispano Suiza H6B and a 1930 Cadillac 452A.

Among the motorcycle highlights were a 2006 Boss Fly V8 barstool, 1974 Harley Davidson SX 125, 1978 Harley Davidson MX 250, 1956 BSA Catalina Scrambler, 1958 MV Augusta Gran Sport, 2000 Harley Davidson Military, 1972 Harley Davidson Baja 100, 1959 Honda CL 175, 1959 BMW R69 and a 1970 Husqvarna 400 Cross formerly owned by Steve McQueen and currently on display at the San Diego Auto Museum.

Current owner Rob Phillips recounted a story that happened during the bike’s restoration. Phillips’ repair team found an "uncirculated" 1960 Lincoln head penny in a small round plastic case tucked away in the cavity between the engine and frame. Whether the coin was placed for luck or because it is dated in the same year that McQueen’s son, Chad, was born, is uncertain, but its placement and the personal connection to McQueen adds to the endearing and unique character of this motorcycle.

Chad McQueen was even on hand along with superstar supercollector Jay Leno, who rumbled into the show in a 22-liter 1917 Fiat Botafogo Special with its 320-hp WWI engine chugging comfortably below its 1,500 RPM

redline.

The Concours also featured a lecture series from such industry experts as Donald Osborne, Contributing Editor of Sports Car Market Magazine; Carl Bomstead, Sr. Auction Analyst of Sports Car Market and Margaret Leslie Da-vis, author of Dark Side of Fortune, who spoke about the history of Greystone Mansion and the infamous Doheny family murder.

A high-end marketplace with fine art, jewelry, automobilia, and accessories filled an adja-cent courtyard, while food stations catered by Lawry’s, beer and wine gardens, margarita and espresso bars were conveniently situated throughout the estate grounds – and free with your ticket.

Granted, your tickets cost $133 at the door, but that came with unlimited food and drink, a pro-gram and poster, access to the estate grounds and mansion, as well as a two for one admission to the Petersen Automotive Museum, and best of all, a portion of the proceeds went to benefit the non-profit Friends of Greystone, and their ongoing restoration efforts of the Greystone Estate.

When it came time to hand out the awards, Beverly Hills Mayor Dr. William Brien selected a 1936 Bugatti Type 57 Cabriolet, owned by Lil-iane Quon McCain as the winner of the Mayor's Choice Award, and preeminent sportscar and auto racing photojournalist Jesse Alexander selected the recipient of the Jesse Alexander Outstanding Sports Car Award, a 1954 Fiat 8V Zagato owned by Kip Kolodzieski.

Additional awards included the Best of Show Concours d'Elegance presented to a 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 owned by David Sydorick, and Best of Show Concours de Sport was presented to a 1964 Alfa Romeo TZ owned by Ron Hein. The Spirit of Greystone Award, which honors the vehicle that best exemplifies the Greystone Mansion ‘era’ was presented to a 1930 Cadillac 452A owned by Aaron & Valerie Weiss. The FIVA Most Well Preserved Vehicle Award was given to a 1939 Bugatti Type 57C Coupe owned by Peter and Merle Mullin.

The awards presentation also featured Best of Class awards, one for each of the 13 automo-bile categories represented at this year's show. Judged by the exhibitors in each respective category, Best of Class was awarded in the following automobile categories: Mercedes-Benz - 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster owned by William Kling, Jaguar - 1952 Jaguar XK-120 owned by Simon Rubin, Porsche - 1971 Porsche 911 S owned by Bob Smith, Pre-War American - 1928 Packard 526 owned by Paul & Pam Friskopp, Post-War American - 1958 Cadil-lac Eldorado Biarritz owned by John Boccardo, Ferrari - 1963 Ferrari 250GTL owned by Tomy Drissi, Corvette - 1962 Chevrolet Corvette owned by Jaime Gesundheit, Pre-war Rolls Royce - 1936 Rolls-Royce Phantom III owned by Raffi and Lauren Cohen, Post-War Rolls-Royce/Bentley - 1953 Bentley Continental R owned by Don Rose, European Classics - 1939 Bugatti Galibier 57C owned by Bill Pope, Post-War British - 1963 Morgan Plus 4 owned by Dennis Glavis, Italian Sports - 1954 Alfa Romeo 1900 SS Zagato owned by Scott & Coco Gauthier, and

Let’s Go RVing!

I guess the first true RV’ers were the pioneers who set out across the country to find new lands. They packed all the luxuries they

could and set off to their destination of choice!

The recreational vehicle was not really defined

however, until the time when the first automobiles were created.

1910 was the year that recreational vehicles were first manufactured and sold in the United States. ‘Pierce-Arrows’ was the first to produce a primitive version of the Type B camper van that exists today. It was named the “Touring Landau”, and it even contained a toilet. Auto Kamp Trailers and the Los Angeles Trailer Works had their own lines of traveling homes. Some of these RVs were featured in issues of Popular Mechanics as early as 1911.

The recreational vehicle industry recently celebrated its 100th

birthday! The mobile campers of today have full baths, kitchens,

generated power, plasma TVs, hot tubs, laundry facilities, powerful engines, and sophisticated electronic overdrive transmissions.

The Murphy Auto Museum in Oxnard has this wonderful 1924 Chevrolet House Car on permanent display. All original, this early RV features a 4-cylinder overhead engine, a 3 speed manual transmission, bed and closet, sink, and kerosene lamps. It has wood sides and a metal roof!

The possibilities are endless in where the next generation of recreational vehicles will go. One thing is for sure, people will never grow tired of traveling and enjoying all the luxuries of home that they can bring along!

The finest detail center the world has ever known: Lavaggio: The Art of Auto Detailing

Story by: Dustin Troyan

When I first heard of Lavaggio, I didn’t believe what I was told. “The most amazing detailing facility ever built!” that was the quote. Year’s ago, I had an auto detailing business and all of us know, auto detailing is a bay or a trailer. So, when I heard about Lavaggio, I just wrote it off. Over the next couple of month’s, I kept hearing about Lavaggio and it always followed with “you must go see it, you will not believe it.” So, curiosity got the best of me and I headed over. Exiting the 101 fwy at Reyes Adobe, I was told I could not miss it, “turn right off the freeway and make the first right onto Canwood St. and you will see it on your left.”

So off the freeway I went, turned right and

right onto Canwood Street. But, something must be wrong. All I see is a spa or a medical building, everything else is residential. There is no detail center around here? So, I drove back and forth a few times and I kept seeing the Lavaggio waterfall and signage by the street, but where was the facility? All I see is this stun-ning building that is reminicent of Tuscan villa. So, I turned into the medical building or villa or whatever it was and my jaw dropped, IT WAS LAVAGGIO!

A little intimidated, I pulled into the parking lot. I didn’t understand this was the detail-ing facility? I walked up the marble steps and entered automotive nirvana. Allow me to assure you with 100% certainty; there is no other detail facility on the planet like Lavaggio. Everything I was told was true, and more.

Lavaggio is an entirely new concept in auto de-tailing. It is not a bay or a body shop it is quite possibly the nicest automotive venue that has ever been created. Lavaggio is dedicated to one

simple principle: Exceed your expectations. To fully understand Lavaggio, you must visit. No expense has been spared in providing your vehicle and yourself with the finest experience possible.

So what makes Lavaggio so special?

It begins when you pull onto the property. As you pull in the lull of waterfalls immediately puts you at ease. As you pull up, Lavaggio’s ser-vice advisor, Gabriel greets you with a friendly smile and an extremely high level of expertise. Once you have agreed upon a service, you enter Lavaggio’s state-of-the-art building. The con-cierge greets you, not unlike a five star hotel. She asks if you are “staying” or if you would like to be “transported” back to your home or office. Now here is where it starts to get very interesting. Included in the price of every ser-vice is a meal made to order and a ride home in a Cadillac Escalade. Do you need me to repeat that? You pull up to get your vehicle washed or detailed and you have your choice of a freshly

Page 15: Driven World June Issue

made meal and/or a ride back to the office! NO EXTRA CHARGE!

If it is the case that you decide you are going to stay at Lavaggio while your vehicle is being cleaned, you have your choice of relaxing on their stunning patio, watching the flat-screen TV inside, using one of three Imacs or your own wireless laptop or device. And this is only a small portion of the facility! If it is the case that you have work to be done or want a little more privacy, just head upstairs and there is a desk and a private sitting area as well as offices that are available to you. At no extra charge!

Ok, ok, sounds great, but if I am getting a ride home and a return pick up to get my vehicle and a complimentary meal, this place must cost a fortune right? WRONG! That is the most amaz-ing part of the Lavaggio experience; it is priced at a level that anyone can afford! In fact, it is price better than most other quality detail shops and mobile detailers. Throw in the lunch, amenities and pampering, it is a no-brainer.

Back to exceeding expectations, the base service is the Lavaggio Signature Wash. Now, what you have to understand here is that their wash is everybody else’s mini-detail or detail. The Signature Wash which is expertly executed by detailers, is fully customized to each vehicle, meaning that it is not a conveyor or a line, it is two detail professionals using mineral free wa-ter (R-O water) in a dedicated wash bay utiliz-ing the finest products available. After the car is washed, it is pulled into the detail bay. Oh, the detail bay. Again, I assure you with 100% certainty that you have never seen such a detail bay or work area (see next page). Your vehicle is pulled into the bay and the detailers go to work on the inside and exterior of the vehicle. Your floor mats are put through a state-of-the-art washing and sanitizing machine. Your steering wheel, shifter and door handle are sanitized. From your wheels to your windows to your gas door, the attention to detail on the Signature Wash far exceeds the norm. To ensure the paint looks great, the detailers finish the vehicle with a liberal portion of detail spray.

Yes, this is the wash! Upon completion, your vehicle is inspected three times. THREE TIMES! This ensures that Lavaggio lives up to its promise: Exceeding your expectations. If this is just the wash, image the detail!

Also worth noting are the big, sound proof bay windows which are incorporated into the struc-ture. Every step of the way you can observe the skilled technicians perfecting your vehicle! Noth-ing is hidden and the entire process is there for you to see. The entire approach at Lavaggio is to ensure that you are 100% comfortable with every aspect of your experience and the services being rendered on your vehicle.

When I tell you that you have to experience Lavag-gio, you really must. I believe it actually takes a few visits to really understand the scope of what Lavaggio has to offer and the vision that has been recognized. Lavaggio is truly redefining auto detailing. Continued Page 14

When one is in the publishes a magazine, space is a precious commodity. I figured I would dedicate three pages to Lavaggio, but I could not tell the whole Lavaggio story in just three pages. I could actually dedicate a whole magazine to really elabo-rate on the level of detail at Lavaggio, but if you are a car guy like me, check out this one of a kind detail bay.

To detail properly, you must have an envi-ronment, which is conducive to detailing. Environmentally factors like temperature, wind, fallout (overspray, dirt/dust in the air, other pollutants) all play a major role in the preparation, application and execution of detailing. At Lavaggio, the detail bay was designed to guarantee that Lavaggio had the perfect environment. From the climate controlled bay to the

“clean room” air treatment system to remove dust and pollutants n the air, to the natural lighting, and the finest and most modern equipment, Lavaggio is truly one of a kind.

The detail team at Lavaggio has been trained, retrained, trained again, some more training and they are always training. Enough is never enough and to stay sharp, industry experts are in constant contact and are being flown in from all over the United States to ensure the Lavaggio team is current on all new techniques, products and information.

At Lavaggio, detailing is more than detailing, it is keeping you and your family healthy! Lavaggio has researched and found that there is a direct relationship between time spent in a car and illness. This is often at-tributed to contaminants in your vehicle. Research shows that if you eat in your

vehicle, have kids or animals, your vehicle can be as dirty if not dirtier than your toilet. It’s true, Google it! To combat this, Lavag-gio has taken a “health approach” and again, invested in training and equipment to kill germs and bacteria in your vehicle. The pur-pose of this “Health Approach” was simply that the Lavaggio management felt it was their responsibility to keep their guests and the guests’ families healthy.

The lift in the corner. Yup, you go it, concours detailing. There was such a high demand from guests that wanted more than just the top and inside of their vehicles done, that Lavaggio decided to put in a lift with extra-low ramps (for the sports cars owners out there). Lavaggio offers concours detail-ing and under-carriage detailing.

They offered story about a set of wheels that

they were preparing for a guest. The wheels were to be put on a vintage Ferrari that was to head up to Concorso Italiano. So Lavaggio went to work on the wire wheels and the vin-tage tires. Having completed the “Concours wheel and tire service”, what did Lavaggio do? They called in a local certified concours judge and had them inspected prior to delivery to the client. The vehicle took a trophy!

What types of vehicles frequent Lavaggio? On any given day, you will see a mom pull up in a SUV or a Prius owner pulling in. The irony is that most people think that Lavaggio is only for “certain cars”, but truth be told, every type of car imaginable pulls in on a daily basis. I have been there when a boat pulled in, fol-lowed by a Carrera Gt, then a couple “soccer moms” in SUVs and then a Harley. Lavaggio was created to suit the needs of every type of vehicle owner and every type of vehicle. I have

seen 4x4s covered in mud from weekend in the desert to real 440 6-pack Cudas to Hondas, Toyotas, Kias and everything else under the sun. Lavaggio is such a value and an experience, once you visit, you have found a new home.

Lavaggio has also reached out to the car community. From offering their facility to car clubs and charitable foundations, to holding private events at to partnering with dealerships and manufacturers. Lavaggio has hosted guests like the Santa Barbara Porsche Club and parties and receptions from Hotchkis Suspensions, Lamborghini Aventador Launch parties with the Auto Gallery, Galpin Auto Sports Mustang drives, McLaren Beverly Hills test drives, Tesla test drives, and so on and so forth. Lavaggio is becoming a central hub for everything auto-motive.

Back to the detailing. Lavaggio takes such great care of your vehicle and they take it so seri-ously, every vehicle is inspected three times by three different trained experts. The technicians wear white cloth gloves and lab coats. Upper management will even do “spot inspections” to ensure the highest level of work possible. And within 48 hours, a follow up call is made to the guest to ensure that their experience was of the approval of the guest. At Lavaggio, the experi-ence is in the details and they are in the detail business and trust me, it shows.

Being very immersed in the automotive world, I have never come across such an organiza-tion. Lavaggio has truly set a new bar that will be very hard for others to replicate if it is even possible. Again, I have to stress, you have to visit the location to fully understand what has been created. Continued- Page 18

Lavaggio continued

Lavaggio has had such great demand for a “yearly pro-gram”, that they developed a concept called the “Platinum Club.” The Platinum Club is a yearly program in which you enroll your vehicle. The program allows you to get your vehicle unlimited Signature Washes. Yes, that does mean every day. It entitles you to a meal with every visit, concierge ser-vices, local car service, use of the business centers and offices, invitations to private events and product launches. It also entitles you to (4) Ultimate Details, or aLease Return Detail & a New Car Detail (in the case that you trade in your vehicle), VIP treatment. You might ask if anyone gets their car washed everyday and the answer is “yes”, they do. The value of just the washes once a week is well over $2500.00, not in-

cluding the Ultimate Details, the meal with each visit, and all of the amenities. The true value of this programs is well over the $4600.00 mark. But in classic Lavaggio style, they have priced the Platinum Club at $1975.00 and even have payment options available to you. In essence, your vehicle is guaranteed to be clean and resale value or trade-in value is realized.

I have personally enrolled two vehicles and have to tell you that it is the finest experience ever! I would suggest joining to everyone.

The 4th Annual Concorso Ferrari

Concorso Ferrari 2012Story and Photography byLeo MayorquinWebsite: CNCpics.com & Facebook.com/cncpics

The 4th Annual Concorso Ferrari was held on May 6, 2012, hosted by the Ferrari Club of America-South-west Region (FCA-SW). It is one of the best annual car events one can possibly attend all year. Held in Old Town Pasadena this event is open to the public and best of all it’s FREE. Very rarely does one get to attend a judge Concours event for free without having to be a part of the media, but this is one rare such event. Entry is open to all FCA-SW members, but space is limited to 150 cars and only pre-1999 Ferrari’s are open for judging. Colorado Boulevard provides the perfect setting for car show featuring some of the best automobiles to ever come out of Modena, Italy. With it’s old town charm the Prancing Horses look right at home, you can just imagine some of these classic cruising down Colorado Blvd. in Old Town Pasadena when it was just Pasadena. Such classics as the Vignale bodied 1951 212 Inter, 250 TdF, 250 ‘Lusso’, 250 GTF, 250 prototype, Daytona’s, 275 GTB, 512 BBi and the list goes on and on and on. Even the modern day Ferrari’s where well represented by a pair of Enzo’s, several 599’s including a GTO, F430’s and 458 Italia’s. If you are a fan of the Prancing Horse this is definitely a can’t miss show.

But there weren’t only road going Ferrari’s present there was also a pair of retired Formula 1 cars in the form of Niki Lauda’s Ferrari and Michael Schum-

acher’s F2001. Yours truly was lucky enough to arrive early and get to hear Niki Lauda’s F1 car as it drove down Colorado Blvd. to its spot. You could literally hear the car coming from blocks away as its wonderful Ferrari power-plant made sounds which reverberated off the buildings walls and made the ground shake. I got very close to it in order to get some close ups before everyone surrounded it and what happened next can best be described as an eargasm. The gentle-man behind the wheel was gracious enough to give it a few quick revs which brought instant smiles to everyone’s faces. My ears where but 2 feet from the exhaust when he did this and even though I lost my hearing for a little bit, it was well worth it. I was grinning from ear to ear as was the young child standing next to me also taking pictures with his camera. Tony Nobles the owner of the F2001 didn’t fire up his F1 car, but he was gracious enough to let dozens of small children sit in the car and hold the same steering wheel in their hands that Michael Schumacher held on his way to yet another F1 championship.

Concorso Ferrari is a great event for the whole family, so if you didn’t get to attend this year make sure you attend next year!

The Lamborghini Marque at Supercar Sunday was another stel-lar hit! From Robert Ross’s Beautiful 1966 Lamborghini 400GT Interim, which is arguably the finest in the world, to five Aventa-dor’s of representing a kaleidoscope of Lamborghini’s most vibrant colors. A n example of a 1970 Lamborghini Miura S owned by Jeffrey Meier was on display, which won the People’s Choice Award a few weeks later at the Greystone Concours. Over 60 of the finest super cars in the Lamborghini Stable were present and strutting their stuff.

It is also worth mentioning that it was a spectacular turnout by all standards. There were notable examples of just about every

other super car as well as the finest from the muscle car and hot rod, European and import worlds. It is always fun when multiple Lexus LFAs turn up, including the rare Nuremburg Edition which is to our knowledge the only one example in North America.

Thank you to all who made the Lamborghini Day at Supercar Sun-day such a great day! For more info: www.supercarsunday.com
