School hours of student
supervision are 7:30am to 3pm.
Outside these hours children’s
safety is a parental/guardian
responsibility.
Children must not be dropped off
at school prior to 7:30am and
must either be picked up before
3pm, walk/cycle home if old
enough, or attend the After
School Hours Care program.

Using Growth Mindset Praise and Feedback
◦ Praise what your child does, not who he or she is.
Instead of saying, "You are so smart/clever/brilliant", say
"I can see you really worked hard/put forth effort/tried
hard". Praise perseverance and resiliency when you see
your child struggle or face challenge. Avoid praising
grades. Focus on praising work ethic and effort – not
achievement.
◦ Adopt the word ‘yet’ into your vocabulary. If your child
proclaims that he doesn’t understand something, can’t
dribble a basketball, or can’t play a song on his guitar,
remind him that he can’t ‘yet’ but with hard work he will
have success.
◦ Avoid comparing your child’s success with siblings or
friends – achievement is not a competition. There is
enough success for everyone.

can email the absence to:
Please leave your name, your
child’s name and room number,
date of absence and reason for
absence.
The front office does not phone
through to classrooms to have
children sent to the office for
early collection, as this causes
too many disruptions. Parents
must allow enough time to go
through and collect their child
from the classroom if they wish to
collect them early.
Please do not park in the
preschool car park unless you
have a preschool child, as
parking spaces are limited.

Redirecting Fixed Mindset Thinking
Redirect your child’s fixed mindset statements. If you hear your
child say "I am no good at Maths" or "I just can’t understand
Shakespeare", point out the fixed mindset thinking and direct her
to a growth mindset place. Remind her that she may not
understand yet, but will by asking questions, finding new
strategies, setting small goals, and working hard. Some
examples of how to redirect such statements are included below.
Other ways to Praise the Effort
Please feel free to contact Shona Henderson (Principal), or any of
the Assistant Principals; Danielle Hall, Alison Buchanan (part time
and not working on Wednesdays), and Allison Stewart, should
you have any concerns or questions.

End of Year Excursion
$15.00
Wednesday 9 December
A big thank you to the following people who came to the Working
Bee on Sunday: Di, Maya, Cassidy and Riggs White; Pru and
Hanna Krause; Cherie McCormack and Kayesha Keating; Gary,
Rosalina and Jack Burrowes; Mrs Stewart and Caitlin; Sharon,
Mackenzie and Mawgan Keats; Harley, Skye and Seth Joyce;
Mrs Henderson; Mrs Fullbrook and Mr Mick and his trusty dog
Bolt. A mountain of weeds were pulled out of the garden beds
and pathways, trees were pruned and there was a big clean up at
the back of the shed in readiness for cyclone season. It is
certainly true that many hands make light work.
Green paws paws are for sale in the front office for 50c each.

Orienteering - Wet Season
Series 2015
Top End Orienteers are holding a
short series of orienteering
events around Darwin on
Monday evenings. You can
compete individually or in groups
and visit as many or as few
checkpoints as you want. Each
Monday there will be two options:
• Easy course: suitable for
novices (2-2.5 km) or
• Scatter: handicapped
course where you decide
how many checkpoints to
visit (3.5-5.5 km)
Starts available between:
5:30-6:15 pm. Courses close:
(45cm x 45cm) (50cm x 40cm)
These two paintings have generously been donated by our very
own talented artist, Darlene Devery. All money raised is being
used to help reduce the cost of the Year 6 dinner and dance after
their graduation ceremony. The paintings will be on display in the
front office. If you are interested in placing a bid, ask the front
office staff for a bidding ticket and place your bid in the 'Silent
Auction box'. There is a reserve price on both paintings.
You would have noticed our electronic noticeboard at the
front of the school. Important upcoming events are
advertised there as well as in the fortnightly newsletter, on
our Facebook page and on our website. A hard copy of the
newsletter is also posted in the glass noticeboard at the
front of the school. Hard copies are available to collect from
the front office for those who want a hard copy. For those
families who have devices such as smart phones or ipads,
we encourage you to download the Driver Primary Skoolbag
app. This app will notify you of upcoming events and can
even notify the school if your child is absent via this app,
rather than ringing the school. Newsletters are also stored
here.
WOOLWORTHS SWAP CARDS
While technically these cards should be banned according to our
Toy Ban, we would like to make this a special exception JUST
FOR THE LENGTH OF THE WOOLWORTHS PROMOTION (like
we have done with past promotions). The reason being is that
there is a great deal of educational and social value we are

witnessing which we believe outweighs the few children who are
not swapping nicely.
There are some rules surrounding this however and teachers
will make them clear to the students in their classes.
1. The only time and place during school hours that the cards can
come out is in the library at lunch times. If however swapping
becomes rowdy or any fighting takes place, the offending children
will be asked to leave the library immediately and their cards will
be confiscated by the teacher on duty in the library. If the library
teachers feel that it is becoming unmanageable as the group of
students not swapping nicely is large, then we will stop it
immediately and enforce the original ban
2. The Woolies Cards are the only cards allowed to be swapped.
If pokemon cards or footy trading cards come out at school they
will be confiscated.
3. If cards are seen outside of the times allowed (in the library at
lunch), staff will confiscate them and put them in an envelope with
the child's name on it and give them to the child’s class teacher.
Students can then collect them at the end of the day and will be
asked not to bring them back to school again.
4. Children bring these items to school at their own risk.
We highly recommend that folders do not come to school as
they can be easily damaged or mixed up. The school will not
take any responsibility for lost cards or folders.
