10:00 – 10:45am Reducing The Fuel Consumption & Greenhouse Gas Emissions Of Medium & Heavy – Duty Vehicles – Wild Horse Peak & Rolling Hills Room

Paul Menig, CEO, Business Accelerants™ Powered by Tech – I – M

Technology refuses to slow down and brake, unless it is a Level 2 and above motor vehicle with the ability to brake itself. The next decade will see many new technologies introduced to move freight and manage transportation. Some of this will be driven by government regulations around the world to minimize air pollution, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and rare earth metals, and support ethical mining. Other sectors will take advantage of medical advances for an aging population, while entertaining (AND EDUCATING) younger populations will see new forms of diversion and learning. The technology advances are exciting, but they harbor a downside. Setting systems up, operating them easily, and maintaining them productively is becoming a serious challenge. Education at all levels needs to adapt to this new reality, whether augmented or virtual.

This keynote will highlight conclusions and recommendations of the Second Report of the National Academy of Sciences committee on “Reducing the Fuel Consumption and Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles, Phase Two” (see https://www8.nationalacademies.org/pa/projectview.aspx?key=49502 in advance of publication due in August). It will also talk about the future of transportation and the ACES up its sleeve—Automated, Connected, Environmentally Safe. All of this will be put into the context of what it will take to prepare for deployment, operation, and maintenance of these advanced technologies by Humans Interacting with Machines (HIM).

Conference Schedule

10:45 – 12:00pm Plenary: Future Of The Auto Industry – Wild Horse Peak & Rolling Hills Room At every point in human history where innovation rapidly changes lives and economies, transportation rapidly evolves as well. A long way from covered wagons, today across the US there are 263.6 million automobiles for 327.2 million people. Across the globe there’s about 1 billion automobiles for 7.5 billion people. There are opportunities and challenges to solve for. How does that affect the workforce we prepare? What tech trends should we know? And what logistics opportunities are ahead?

Moderator: Johanna Maska, CEO, Global Situation Room, Inc.

Sonari Glinton, Former NPR Consultant, Auto Industry

Irina Rosca, Founder, sustainSCM and Director, Supply Chain & Customer Success Operations, Helix OpCo.

George Szabo, Co – Founder & CEO, AIXIA Global Inc.

12:30 – 12:45pm How California is Leading the Charge to Electrify Transportation – Wild Horse Peak & Rolling Hills Room

Patty Monahan, Commissioner, California Energy Commission

1:00 – 2:00pm Breakout Sessions Workforce Training – Estate Vineyard Room

Technology is evolving rapidly across today’s increasingly complex and connected fleet. Many fleets now operate a wide range of vehicle types and classes powered by a variety of gaseous fuels, electricity, or hybrid systems. Those vehicles are coming equipped with more and more sophisticated onboard sensors and components, all producing and sharing data in real time. This is a watershed moment for commercial vehicle fleets and the suppliers who support them. Unless we take steps together now to ensure we have a skilled workforce to support these new vehicles, the lack of adequate maintenance and operations capability will become a serious obstacle to their successful adoption. This workshop will begin with an overview of the top alternative fuels and connected technology changes and the specific workforce needs that are accompanying them. A panel discussion including fleets, training professionals, and workforce development leaders on how to develop and keep a trained team to support these evolving needs will follow.

Moderator: Dan Berlenbach, CPFP, Fleet Services Manager, City of Long Beach

Cliff Thorne, Director of Maintenance and Motorist Services, Orange County Transportation Authority

John Eppstein, Master Automobile Technician & Undercar Specialist, John’s Automotive Care

Electric Trucks are Not Just Big Electric Cars

– Barrel Room

Electric heavy-duty trucks are more than just “buzz.” Major OEMs have electric products in the pipeline that will be on the market beginning early in the next decade. Telsa and other smaller companies have said they are joining the fray as well. The challenge is that these are commercial vehicles and their success is predicated on uptime--they must not only compete by being able to do as much as their internal combustion engine predecessors, but they must be as reliable and easy-to-repair under arduous working conditions. That means a new support system must be built with trained technicians capable to tackling repairs and maintenance and going beyond that to proactive interaction with truck operators and owners. This session will dive into the creation of this new eco-system, which is beginning in conjunction with demonstration projects beginning in Southern California.

Moderator: Dr. Aravind Kailas, Manager, Research & Innovation, Volvo Group

Lisa Arellanes, Senior Manager, Business Development & Partnerships, Southern California Edison

What is the Ford A.C.E Program? – Gold Room

Ford Automotive Career Exploration is a partnership program between Ford Motor Company, Ford/Lincoln dealerships, and secondary and post-secondary educational institutions. The intent of the program is to raise awareness and increase interest in career opportunities within the automotive industry, ultimately as a service technician. There are no fees to educational institutions to participate in the Ford ACE program. The only requirement for a school to participate is to be sponsored by a local Ford/Lincoln dealership. Students attending a Ford ACE partnership school can obtain valuable knowledge of Ford/Lincoln vehicle systems by completing Web-Based Training (WBT) via our Learning Management System (LMS). These courses are a subset of the same courses taken by our current dealership technicians. By completing these WBT courses, the students are one step closer towards a career in the automotive industry, beginning as an entry level automotive service technician at a Ford/Lincoln dealership.

Advanced Vehicle Training Standards for Technicians Working with High–Voltage and High–Pressure Systems – Barrel Room

Northwest Engineering and Vehicle Technology Exchange (NEVTEX) NSF / ATE Grant Award # 1700708 proposes to take a 140 year old automotive industry with proven technology and developed technician standards – and start all over again. Ken Mays and John Frala propose the development of Advanced Vehicle Training Standards for technicians working with high-voltage and high-pressure systems.

We are one year into the development of a new set of professional standards that will be used by industry, government, and education to solidify credentials for technicians working on all levels of electric drive vehicles including fuel cell systems.

Every year community colleges wrestle with program development based on regional industry needs. Then there is the college’s Strategic Planning that creates a long-range plan that will likely include facilities and staff.

New program ideas, possibly include a grant, data affirmation, administrative challenges and beyond.

What happens when you propose a new idea that seems like it will flourish, but no one has tried it before and you are now entering into a zone of uncertainty?

Over our entire life experience, we have patterned our professional lives on the platform of current technologies – always improving as that industry changes.

We would like to share the process of creating:– A template for Vehicle Electrification Systems Standards– Catagories for Vehicle Electrification Systems– Category sub-systems for Vehicle Electrification Systems– Application and practical testing – lab examples
