It is truly an honor for me to welcome you to The Memorial Trust Foundation's 34th Annual Charter Ball. Our annual Charter Ball is the time for The Memorial Trust Foundation to recognize individuals who havemade a difference in the community.

This evening, we honor Dr. Bill H. Kim, the hospital’s Medical Director and Gastroenterologist in private practice and State Senator Alan Lowenthal. Our two honorees represent outstanding contributions to ourhospital and community and we are privileged to acknowledge their accomplishments.

It is also time to recognize and acknowledge your generosity and on-going support to Downey Regional Medical Center. It is because of people like you, Downey Regional Medical Center continues to provide quality healthcare today and prepare for the changing needs of tomorrow.

Tonight’s proceeds will benefit our Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Downey Regional Medical Center,a much needed service in our community. We see over 1,000 patients a year in our Cath Lab, providingboth diagnostic and monumental procedures. With a new state-of-the-art Lab we can continue to offer excellent patient care along with today’s most innovate medicine, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Bill H. Kim, M.D.

Dr. Bill H. Kim has been the Medical Director of Downey Regional Medical Center since 1999, is a partner withthe Frischer Medical Group and has been very active with the Family Practice Residency Training programserving on the Executive Steering Committee.

He has actively participated as a member of the Medical Executive Committee since 1993, served as a member of the Board of Directors from 1997- 1999, and has been a Board Member with the DRMC Memorial Trust Foundation for many years. He chairs the Performance Improvement Committee and theContinuing Medical Education committee and is a member of the Clinical Review Committee and the Critical Care Committee. He has served on numerous committees throughout his career at DRMC. Dr. Kimhas been a physician champion for improving both the quality of care and patient safety at Downey Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Kim is a Fellow of The American College of Gastroenterology and an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA School of Medicine since 1989 where he received the Clinical Educator of the Year Awardin 1994. Throughout his career, Dr. Kim has been very active in the healthcare arena as a lecturer andspeaker on numerous topics presenting to the community, interns and residents, medical students, andphysicians throughout the United States. Dr. Kim is admired by both his colleagues and patients, and isknown for his sense of humor, compassionate care and treating his patients like they were members of hisown family.

Dr. Kim was born in New York City and grew up in Muscatine, Iowa. He graduated from Muscatine HighSchool in 1977 as both a Valedictorian and the Class President. His younger brother Dr. Jim Yong Kim graduated from Muscatine High School in 1978 also as a Valedictorian and Class President and was recentlyinaugurated as the 17th President of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Dr. Bill Kim graduated with Honors from the University of Iowa College of Medicine and was the recipient of theHancher-Finkbine Medallion, the highest award given to a student at the University of Iowa. He did his Internal Medicine residency at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and his Gastroenterology fellowship at theUCLA Center for the Health Sciences where he was awarded the David P. Solomon Award for Residency Research.

Dr. Kim has two children, Stephen age 14 and Lauren age 12, who are both exceptional student athletes.Both children love to ski, fish and dirt bike. Stephen is currently on the football team at the Sage Hill Schoolon Newport Coast while Lauren competes nationally with the Stealth Cheerleading Team and attends thePegasus School.

State Senator Alan Lowenthal- 27th District

Senator Alan Lowenthal is strongly committed to ensure that the interests of the 27th Senate District are representedin Sacramento, including education, public safety, economic development andenvironmental protection.

Among his many accomplishments Senator Lowenthal has had legislation signed into law to reduce diesel emissionsat the ports by limiting idling time for trucks conducting transactions at the ports, established a grant program to provide financial incentives for purchasing or leasing electric vehicles, and a bill to protect highway workers from assault.

His legislation limiting the liability for organizations donating firefighting equipment was hailed as a major accomplishment by the California State Firefighters Association, which named him their “Legislator of the Year.”

In addition, Senator Lowenthal has authored laws which help protect seniors from elder abuse, require the ports tocover open petroleum coke piles and removed the toll from the Vincent Thomas Bridge. His strong advocacy on behalf of local governments led to him being named “Legislator of the Year” by the League of California Cities.

He has been an effective leader in the drive to clean the L.A. River, securing state funding for that purpose in severalbudgets. His efforts led to him being one of the first recipients of the “Rivie” award by the Friends of the Los AngelesRiver. He has also has exhibited strong leadership in cleaning the air surrounding the Ports of L.A. and Long Beach,resulting in his being honored by the California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV), the Sierra Club and the SouthCoast Air Quality District.

Senator Lowenthal serves as Chair of the Senate Committee on Transportation and Housing as well as its Subcommittee on California Ports and is recognized as a National leader on issues related to goods movement.

A resident of Long Beach, Senator Lowenthal is married to Dr. Debbie Malumed, a family practice physician. He hastwo adult sons, Joshua and Daniel and one grandson, Avinash. He graduated with a B.A. from Hobart College andearned a Ph.D. from the Ohio State University. Alan Lowenthal was re-elected to his second term representing the 27thDistrict of the California State Senate in November of 2008.

Prior to his election to the Senate, Lowenthal served six years in the State Assembly and six years on the Long BeachCity Council. Senator Lowenthal is a retired professor of community psychology from California State University, LongBeach, where he taught since 1969.

The 27th Senate District includes the Los Angeles County communities of Avalon, Long Beach, Signal Hill, Lakewood,Cerritos, Artesia, Bellflower, Downey, South Gate, Lynwood, Paramount, Hawaiian Gardens, Florence-Graham andWillowbrook.

Cardiac Catheterization LaboratoryThank you for supporting the 2009 Charter Ball. Your generous gifts will enable us build a new CardiacCatheterization Laboratory. Heart disease is one of the nation's largest health problems and the leadingcause of death for all Americans aged 35 and older. For the past 27 years, the "Cath Lab" has been providing crucial medical service for thousands of people in Downey and the surrounding communities. Weare proud of the quality care provided in our Cath Lab. We have an exceptional team that are passionateabout providing the best of care as we constantly hear from our grateful patients and their families .

To continue to provide service, the Cath Lab is in need of equipment and technology.

The funds raised by this evening's event will allow the Cath Lab to provide faster and better cardiac care toour community. With new state of the art equipment the Cath Lab will be able to conduct minimally invasive procedures to treat a wide range of clinical problems including coronary artery disease. Thesecatheter-based procedures are designed to enhance therapeutic results, reduce the risks and recovery timein traditional surgical approaches.
