Drumroll SPECIAL EVENTS AT TORONTO’S FORT YORK NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE Atten-shun! Fort York is proud to host the Ontario Model Soldier Society’s 47th annual show and competition. Demonstrations of fig- ure casting and painting techniques; displays of expertly-rendered connoisseur figures, realistic dioramas, tableaux and toy soldiers. More than a thousand pieces on display. This show is Canada’s largest gathering of military miniature vendors. Many exhibitors will be offering figures for sale. DATE: Saturday, June 13 TIME: 10am– 4pm COST: Show is FREE with regular admission. LOCATION: Blockhouse No. 2 & Blue Barracks The first Monday in August is marked in Ontario as a municipal and federal holiday. Toronto City Council first fixed the day as a civic holiday in 1875. In 1968, council passed a by-law naming it Simcoe Day after Colonel John Graves Simcoe – Upper Canada’s civil lieu- tenant-governor and military commander from 1791-96. Simcoe established Toronto (York) in 1793 as the site for a naval arsenal and dock- yard in anticipation of war with the United States. The community that followed gave rise to the city that we know today.At Fort York,Simcoe Day is a time for special perform- ances and activities. DATE: Monday, August 3 TIME: 10am– 5pm COST: Free admission The Friends of Fort York have been providing volunteer citizen support for Fort York for 15 years. Please join us. DATE: Thur. June 18th LOCATION: Fort York, Blue Barracks TIME: 7:30pm following a reception at 6:30pm ONTARIO MODEL SOLDIER SOCIETY SHOW & COMPETITION FRIENDS OF FORT YORK ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING SIMCOE DAY OH, CANADA SUMMER 2009 VOL. 1, NO. 6 On Canada Day the fort comes to life through the sights and sounds of the Fort York Guard summer demonstration squad and drums! 1812- era uniformed troops perform musket and artillery drill as well as fife and drum performances. On-site tours presented throughout the day. A specialty tour will also be offered — Fort York Historic District Walking Tour: Toronto’s Changing Lakefront from 1pm to 2:30pm. This guided walk traces the development of the lakefront from the British colonial era to present day. Discover the origins of Fort York; the fortification of the harbour; local rail and road building; and the indus- trial and recreational development of this vital area. Rain or shine. Tour starts at Fort York’s Canteen (Museum Gift Shop and Visitor Reception area.) Some stairs, hills and rough ground. DATE: Wednesday, July 1 TIME: 10am-5pm COST: Regular admission.
