Clerkenwell White Range2014

HOWDENS - JOINERY

A brief from the sales team for a more price competitive product to replicate a successful existing range lead to the development of the Clerkenwell Family.

Featuring a J pull handle this range takes advantage of a range of technologies to achieve a more competitive price point.

This project’s greatest challenge came down to the time-scale required for

introduction. At the busiest time of year for the business it was imperative that the introduction of this range into stock was as smooth as possible.

New steps had to be taken to remove time from the standard ways of working, to ensure that the team could deliver to commitment. For myself this required a very hands on approach up stream and a very flexible attitude to standard working hours.

Greenwich Gloss Blue Range2014

HOWDENSJOINERY

Driven by growth at the lower end of the business’s product catalogue the Greenwich Gloss Family was investigated to understand what new colours would sell.

With 3 colours in the existing ‘Family’ 6 new additions were selected from a collection of commercially available colours, supported by research from industry, exhibitions and competitors.

Challenges during development and production of these new ranges, required a step up from myself in terms of organisation, planning, appropriate escalation and attention to detail.

Over the course of 4 months, working with 2 International suppliers, checking over 720 separate pieces, these ranges went into stock successfully in 571 stores Internationally.

Free-standing Style Furniture2014

With a brief direct from the CEO a quick response was essential. With a relatively short time to develop the concept for a potential new range requiring a move away from the routine, whilst staying true to the core business, was a challenge.

Utilising as many existing stock items as possible a method was developed to create a free-standing look and feel to kitchen furniture,

that didn’t require a multitude of new and potentially risky stock items.

Developing this concept from a sketch to full working display in 3 weeks required a pragmatic attitude as well as strong leadership to ensure each part of the build and piece of furniture was to plan, not to mention a clear and coherent presentation on the day.

To a tight deadline and budget this set of furniture required close collaboration with the curator.

The two main priorities of the furniture being, quick and easy to assemble and disassemble, and to be modern and light in appearance.

In the space of 2 weeks working in the evening and at weekend, 11 pieces of furniture were made in component form. All of which were successfully assembled on the morning of the event, fitting the style and nature of the environment.

A bespoke suite of furniture included two meeting room tables and matching pair of credenzas.

The client required a modern style to their new London

offices. This was achieved by using back painted white glass with a refined look to the supporting structure through the use of chamfering alluding to thinner leg and trunking sections.

A set of furniture from combined bench and coffee station, reception desk and media wall panels meant careful consideration had to be given to ensure a common theme was evident throughout.

Dark corian surfaces juxtaposed with high gloss lacquered white created a rich monotone in the entrance area to this financial services company.

A large project comprising one reception desk and five media walls for this aviation group. The main challenge was the attention to detail required to ensure all five media walls, one of which comprised of sixteen screens, all fitted together seamlessly, on site, upon arrival.

Notes

Fabricated from sheet aluminium with an anodised finish or gloss white this is a modern, lightweight, strong and functional set of office organisation tools.

One of the challenges of this project was to ensure it would work well with a

range of different furniture manufacturers desk dividers, or as standalone pieces. This was achieved through the use of a plastic insert, which clipped into the back and was manufactured at a minimal cost, ensuring the higher stock value aluminium pieces could be kept to a minimum.

Mesh Cable Riser2010

Designed for the office the fabric mesh conceals and organises cables from the desktop to floor.

The adjustable top mount allows for varying desk heights, and a weighted base with soft neoprene underside, allows the user to position the cables where they’re required. Integral

cable tie loops on the base and top mount provide suitable fixing for cables.

The introduction of a mesh fabric cable management solution is an innovation within the market, and has been very successful product.

The Wind-Up Mouse helps to reduce waste in the world and increase awareness of human-generated power and its

applications.

It is a self-powered wireless computer mouse able to run for over 2 hours on 2

minutes of winding.

The Wind-Up mouse seeks to promote sustainability and find ethical and

environmentally friendly solutions to a progressively technological future.

A comprehensive thesis and a working prototype were produced as part of the assessment criteria for the final major

project.
