The Symposium will be hosted by the University of Stellenbosch. The town is situated along the banks of the Eerste River, about 50 kilometres east of Cape Town in the famous wine‐growing region. It is South Africa's oldest town

after Cape Town.

Symposium; Silviculture and Management of Dryland Forests

Stellenbosch became known as the City of Oaks, due to the large number of oak trees that grace its streets and

homesteads. The town is packed with many historic buildings dating back to the 1700's.


Stellenbosch University provides world class education and a rich heritage and tradition to its students. It is also the home of many well‐known artists and crafters, and offers a leisurely lifestyle with sidewalk cafés, pubs and a variety of restaurants

within walking distance.



The Symposium will consist of 7 themes:

1. Tree physiology, growth and tree architectural responses in drought conditions…


2. Site–species matching /genotype x environment interactions…


3. Silviculture regimes and management systems for Dryland Forestry…


4. Management systems for dry natural forest ecosystems (including Savanna forests, bush encroachment and

sustainable livelihoods issues)…


5. Products, procurement, wood properties and markets…


6. Integrated fire management…


7. Landscape improvements and ecosystem services from woodlots and farm forestry projects.


Post Conference tour:

Zululand20 – 23 March 2015


The tour will visit Eucalyptus species and hybrid trials as well as coastal dune forests and end with two days in the Hluhluwe game reserve

and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park
