W ith a variety of fast-food restaurants and gas stations right off I-35, Clear Lake is often a quick stop for many travelers on their way through to Minnesota or

southern Iowa. And if there’s one thing travelers like, it’s getting everything they need in one stop. This fall, they’ll have that chance in a brand new Kwik Star.

Dean Snyder Construction broke ground in May on the new 7,500 SF convenience store/truck center just east of I-35 in Clear Lake. It will be Kwik Star’s largest and most advanced store.

Based out of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Kwik Star/Kwik Trip has over 475 convenience stores throughout Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. DSC’s Office Manager Takes On Vegas

This May, DSC’s accountant/office manager Val Steffen ended her two-year position on TUG’s board of directors in a fun way, with a trip to the 2015 TUG National Users Conference held in Las Vegas, NV. TUG, or “The Users Group,” is a professional organization committed to supporting the users of Sage Accounting & Estimating, a software program that is designed specifically for the construction and real estate industries. Val had been involved with the organization for over five years on different committees before being asked to join the board of directors.

The conference offered more than 200 different education sessions spread over 4 days including hands-on labs and

informative lectures. Attendees of the conference are other users of the software who hope to gain more insight into it. As part of her position on the board, Val was able to help conduct the labs and assist in the education sessions. The conference had over 650 attendees this year.

In May, a new board was inducted but Val remains involved as the chairman of the construction & accounting committee and writes articles for their monthly newsletters. She is also a part of the Iowa chapter of TUG.

DSC’s Val Steffen, above middle, served on TUG’s board of directors for two years.

DSC has crew members in all different types of facilities everyday, from highly-secure food/beverage processing plants to new state-of-the-art medical facilities. While the building environment is completely different, our

safety program standards are not. Often the facility we are entering already has a safety plan in effect or has special needs that have to be met. DSC simply adapts our safety program to be in line with theirs.

DSC believes communication is key to ensuring everyone is implementing the highest safety measures on the jobsite. We want everyone to be following one program and be on the same page when it comes to safety. So, we host a safety orientation before the project even begins for everyone working on the jobsite. After the project

starts, our Field Safety Coordinator Russ Deford regularly stops to confirm safety measures are met.

Waggoner & Wineinger Architects is a subsidiary of DSC.

Dean Snyder Construction & DSC Design Group began working with Barilla Group’s manufacturing facility in Ames, Iowa, in late March of 2015 on a $26.5 million expansion project to increase production of gluten-free pasta. Utilizing a portion of the existing warehouse, crews sectioned off an area for two new gluten-free pasta lines to be installed. Raw material storage, related packaging and palletizing equipment to produce the pasta, laboratories, offices, and washrooms are also being added to the facility.

The fast-track project is currently on schedule with crews finishing the production area for equipment installation. Crews have started the foundation for a raw materials silo tower and have installed two new roof-top units for heating and cooling. Also, all

entrances to the facility now have hand and boot wash areas. DSC crews will be finished with their portion in the facility in August.

Production on the new lines is expected to begin by October 2015. It is anticipated that the project will create 23 new jobs when completed.

Adaptable Safety Program

New Bio-Secure Truck/Trailer Wash Under Construction

With the spread of disease among farm animals running rampant throughout the Midwest and the United States, it’s more important than ever that livestock producers take extra steps to keep their facilities clean. Pathogens are commonly spread through oral/fecal contact, making the transportation vehicle a common cause of contamination.

Christensen Farms, a major pork-production company headquartered out of Sleepy Eye, MN, is working with Dean Snyder Construc-tion to build a specialty bio-secure truck/trailer wash. Located over 10 acres on the outskirts of Appleton, MN, crews are putting up three new buildings to allow Christensen Farms to clean and sanitize their transport trailers to help keep their herds healthy.

When complete, the bio-secure truck/trailer wash will have separate entrances for incoming dirty trucks and outgoing clean trucks. When an unclean truck arrives at the facility, it will go into the chip collection storage building (1,200 SF) to get rid of used bedding and feces. It will then go into the truck wash (17,500 SF) to be sprayed down. The final step will be entering the bio-dry building (2,000 SF) where the truck will be sanitized.

The bio-dry building heats up to 200F to kill off any remaining disease. New bedding is then loaded into the trailer, and a driver is allowed to take off with it.

The truck wash will have two wash bays and also an office portion attached where drivers/employees can use showers, a washer and dryer, a breakroom, and a power washer to decontaminate themselves before heading out to the next jobsite. The project is set to be completed by the end of September.

Giving Students Real-World Learning Opportunities

With the school year quickly approaching, Waggoner and Wineinger Architects decided to try something new to help introduce students to the world of architecture. By collaborating with area Iowa school districts, WWA is giving students the opportunity to compete in a hands-on competition called the Student Collaborative Design Competition.

In the competition, students will be given a project that will require them to act like an actual architect and assemble a design team to develop a resolution to the identified task. Teams will have an entire semester to gather their research and then will present their proposal in front of a panel of judges and the other competing teams. Students will learn what its like to think outside of the box and how to develop building and space solutions.

The winning teams will receive prizes and be given the title of 2015 SCDC Champions. Most importantly, the students will gain valuable insight into the importance and process of architecture. To learn more about the competition or to follow the students' progress this fall, look for WWA on Facebook.

DSC Project Wins Preservation Award

The First United Methodist

Church in Ames, Iowa, was

recently selected to receive an

award from the Ames Historic

Preservation Commission for

its Architecturally Compatible

New Addition/Structure. This

spring, representatives from

the church along with Don

Snyder were presented with a

plaque recognizing the

church’s “new construction as

architecturally compatible with

and sympathetic to historic

structures in the vicinity.”

DSC and DSC Design Group

design-built a new 17,500 SF, 2-story addition for the church in

phases from 2011-2013. The original church was built in 1908. The

award was given based on the following items: the molding used on

the addition is a very close match to the molding on the original

church; brick colors are a very close match to the original window

shapes and trim were replicated on the addition; the limestone

border on the original church building forms a continuous line that

extends around the exterior walls of the additions; and some details

of the entry on the original building were repeated at the south

entrance of the addition.

Fours Oaks Holds Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on August 6 in Mason City, IA, for Four Oak’s new state-of-the-art $3 million Psychiatric Medical Institute for Children. DSC completed construction on the project earlier this summer. Vickie Snyder, co-chair of the Four Oaks fundraising campaign, thanked contributors for helping the children have a chance at a better life.
