MEET THE PRESENTERS

Jamy Ard, M.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Prevention and the Department of Medicine at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He is also co-director of the Wake Forest Baptist Health Weight Management Center, directing medical weight management programs. Dr. Ard received an M.D. and completed internal medicine residency training at Duke University Medical Center. He also received formal training in clinical research as a fellow at the Center for Health Services Research in Primary Care at the Durham VA Medical Center. Dr. Ard has more than 15 years of experience in clinical nutrition and obesity. Prior to joining the faculty at Wake Forest in 2012, Dr. Ard

spent nine years at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he served as medical director of UAB’s EatRight Weight Management Services, Vice Chair for Clinical Care in the Department of Nutrition Sciences, and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in the School of Health Professions.

Monica L. Baskin, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Division of Preventive Medicine and Vice-Chair for Culture and Diversity for the Department of Medicine in the UAB School of Medicine. She holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Nutrition Sciences in the UAB School of Health Professions. Dr. Baskin is an active member of multiple university-wide interdisciplinary centers including the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC), UAB Minority Health and Research Center (MHRC), UAB Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC), UAB Center for Exercise Medicine (CEM), UAB Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education (COERE), UAB Comprehensive Cardiovascular Center (CCVC), UAB Diabetes Research and Training Center (DRTC), and UAB Center for Cardiovascular Biology (CCB).

Leslie Cooper, Ph.D., MPH, BSN, RN, FAAN, Program Director, is a female Disabled Veteran, Registered Nurse and a trained epidemiologist and Health Educator. She has over 30 years of experience in management of scientific programs that focused on various health related topics and scientific issues. Over the many years she has provided her experience as a Program Director, Scientific Administrator, and Public Health Educator includes a broad portfolio that addressed numerous health topics from the adverse consequences of drug use and abuse, HIV/AIDS, cancer, lung disorders, and various issues surrounding the area of maternal child health. Dr. Cooper is active in providing various educational programs across the age spectrum to members in the Washington Metropolitan Area and an active member of the Partnership

for Life Program with the American Cancer Society. Dr. Cooper is a mentor to many and always ready to help others. Dr. Cooper retired from the US Public Health Service after 30 years of military service having achieved the rank of 06 – CAPTAIN, but continues to work in various capacities with both the federal government and private sector. She is the former Program Officer for the Deep South Network for Cancer Control as a Community Network Program from 2005-2010.

Tamera Finley, BS - In 2011, Tamera founded This Sister Cares (TSC), a nonprofit organization, with the intentions of providing mentoring services for young women and girls in Birmingham, AL and the surrounding communities. Shortly after, with help of volunteers and mentors, the S.I.S.T.E.R.S. Outreach Program was implemented for girls ages 7-17. Over the past year, TSC has expanded its reach and shifted its focus to assisting other nonprofit startups by providing the relative information and resources needed to successfully establish their organizations. In addition to her not-for-profit work, Tam Finley is a professional web designer and brand consultant. Comparably to her work with nonprofit

organizations, she assists start-up entrepreneurs and small business owners in developing their brands and finding their niche in their respective marketplace. She is a graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a B.S. in Health Sciences.

Claudia M. Hardy, MPA, BA is the Program Director for the Deep South Network for Cancer Control since its inception in 2000. Claudia provides the administrative leadership for this community-based cancer prevention program that is aimed at eliminating the disparity in cancer death rates between blacks and white in the Deep South. She has been employed by University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Comprehensive Cancer Center Office of Community Outreach for almost 18 years. Claudia holds a BA in Communication Arts with a specialty in Public Relations and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) specializing in organizational

management and behavior from UAB. Claudia's areas of interest and expertise are minority health issues with an emphasis on health disparities, (community) organizational development, Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR), strategic planning, grants administration, minority recruitment and retention in clinical trials, grant reviewer, access/barriers to health care, program development, special event coordination and consultant to various related health issues.

Chef Hardette Harris - Fifteen years and hundreds of culinary experiences later, Chef Hardette Harris is taking every second of her professional knowledge as a private chef to educate and assist people in making the most of their lives with food. The native of Minden, Louisiana has spent the better part of her career in Texas working with families on any number of projects from improving their nutritional intake to organizing their kitchens to preparing foods used to be better home cooks. She says, “Home cooking is the basis for all culinary genres including gourmet.”

Edward E. Partridge, M.D. is Director of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and holds the Evalina B. Spencer Endowed Chair in Oncology. He is a board certified gynecologic oncologist with a competitively funded research career developed shortly after joining the UAB faculty in 1990. This competitive funding includes serving as Principal Investigator of the Ovarian Cancer SPORE (1999 to 2007) and the current UAB component of the Johns Hopkins/UAB Cervical Cancer SPORE, the Morehouse School of Medicine/Tuskegee University/UAB CCC Partnership and the Deep South

Network for Cancer Control. He has experience in translational research with a focus on gynecologic cancers and with community-based participatory research focused on underserved populations.

Isabel Scarinci, MPH, Ph.D. is a behavioral scientist professor with a deep commitment to the elimination of cancer disparities. The focus of her work is on the application of behavioral science to public health by promoting behavior change at the population level, particularly in the areas of cervical cancer and prevention and tobacco control. She is particularly interested in the development, implementation, and evaluation of community-based programs that are theory based and culturally relevant to underserved populations in the U.S. and abroad. Dr. Scarinci is also very dedicated to

community service. An example of her community work is an 11-year program (Sowing the Seeds of Health) to promote breast and cervical cancer screening among Latina immigrants in Alabama that relies 100% on the work of committed volunteers. She has served on several boards and is currently the Honorary Consul of Brazil to Alabama.

Michael Scott, BS, CHES is the Network Coordinator at National African American Tobacco Prevention Network (NAATPN), Inc. He has been involved in tobacco use prevention and public health for the past 13 years. Prior to his position at NAATPN, he served as a Health Education Specialist at both the Durham County Department of Public Health and Duke University Medical Center. Mr. Scott holds a BS degree in Health Education from North Carolina Central University and is a Certified Health Education Specialist. He is the proud father of 2 sons and 1 daughter.

John R. Stone, M.D., Ph.D. is a physician (cardiologist), philosopher/bioethicist, and Graduate Faculty, Master of Science Program in Health Care Ethics of Creighton University’s Center for Health Policy and Ethics. He now serves as bioethics consultant with the Alabama State University-UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. At Creighton, he coordinates the faculty participation in the Health Disparities Research Training Program involving multiple universities and colleges through the UAB Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center. Dr. Stone’s present efforts target health inequalities through scholarship at the Center for Health Policy and

programmatic efforts of the Center for Promoting Health and Health Equality. Educational efforts include the Master of Science Program in Health Care Ethics, the course on Ethical and Legal Topics in Clinical Medicine for medical students, and the course on Responsible Conduct of Research for basic science graduate students.

Myra Tarver, BA, MS is a Jefferson County CHARP for Deep South Network for Cancer Control. Myra is a proud alumna of Miles College where she received her Bachelors of Arts in Physical Education and English. She also has a Master’s Degree in Physical Education from the University of Montevallo. Her background and focus is health and fitness. Myra is an active and faithful member of New St. James Baptist church and the L.C. Fisher Mass Choir. Professionally, she was employed by Jefferson County Board of Education for 34 years as a teacher, cheerleader Coach and other roles. Myra is a dedicated member of Miles College Booster Club and Alumni Association. She is the proud mother of one daughter, Vanessa.

Joanice Thompson, BS has extensive experience in community-outreach and currently serves as the Associate Director for the UAB Minority Health and Research Center Outreach Program. She is responsible for planning, developing, and organizing community participation in preventive health programs. Ms. Thompson is highly skilled in building strong partnerships/community coalitions, monitoring and analyzing community programs and projects progress, community viewpoints and incorporating information into planning activities and action programs. She is very knowledgeable of citizen involvement and participation skills and techniques relative to program planning and evaluation.

Ms. Thompson has very strong connections to Alabama communities and organizations and has set-up numerous Community Advisory Boards, secured community support from agencies, corporation, and local government offices in an effort to link UAB with the Community at large.

Selina Todd, BA is the Program Administrator for Deep South Network for Cancer Control. Selina received her Bachelor of Arts in Communication Management at University of Alabama at Birmingham. She has extensive experience in providing administrative and programmatic support to clinical and research programs. She offers excellent customer service to everything that she does. Her background and focus on community collaboration has led her to a number of volunteer roles in the Birmingham area.
