Desert Classic DanceSport Championships were held at the J W Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa on July 9th thru the 12th. The event started on Thursday with a huge amount of categories in all types of dance. Cha-cha, Rumba, Disco, Foxtrot, Swing, Tango, Waltz, Quick Step, Jive, Samba and the Paso Doble were only a few of the many dances performed. This event equals anything you see on TV on Dancing with the Stars. The quality of the dancing, the sequined costumes, the hair-dos, men’s and boys outfits rival those seen on TV, only these dancers you can watch in person.

There were age groups for all dancers every day. Awards were presented after each section of dancing. One of my favorites was the young children as the main event on Sunday afternoon. These kids are amazing to watch. You can tell they have been dancing and practicing for years, and you can see its something they really love to be that good at such a young age. Every dancer vied to win a prize. Trophies were given out for participation, and the children proudly displayed their awards and posed for photos in their

brightly-colored costumes. Organizers are Igor and Irini

Suvorov, who are themselves dancers and teachers. Dance teachers, Professional and Amatuer dancers vie for prizes. Teachers danced with their students, and Pros danced with dancers of all ages. The contestants came from all over the west, CA, UT, WA and Canada to name just a few of the surrounding states. Some dancers fell in love with dancing as an exercise program and continued on to competition. Children either saw it on TV or had parents or friends involved with ballroom dancing. Most of the dancers competed in more than one type of dance that went from a hip swinging salsa, quick stepping jive, the fast swing and to a smooth waltz.

This is a serious competition as judges surrounded the dance floor and kept an eagle eye on each dancer. The judges came from all over the US and Canada, there were celebrity judges from TV shows, Dancing with the Stars, and So You Think You Can Dance. I noticed Louis Van Amstel from Dancing with the Stars watching intently as each dance was performed. There were over 1000 dancers who competed. Families and friends

filled the ballroom. Those guests who heard about or new about this competition were awed by the amazing ability of all the dancers. This is one event everyone should come and watch.

TV has had a big impact on ballroom dancing and the many forms of dance. It’s a fun form of recreation and creates an interest in competition. This event is only one of many dance competitions across the country. These dancers are sometimes as good as the most professional you see on TV. Their performances go as far as the way they portray the dance on their faces.

The seriousness of the Paso

Doble or the smiles during the Jive. The excitement is also seen in the faces of each competitor. Each dancer wants to improve

at every competition. Dance is something everyone can do from very young children to the older generation.

Story and Photos by Pat KrauseOver 5000 people attended

the 7th annual Palm Tree and Tattoo event. People gathered at the Hard-Rock Hotel for the weekend event. Almost 50 vendors graced the lower level at the Hard-Rock Hotel in the Ballroom area. The vendors were busy every day applying tattoos. Every tattoo artist was seen giving a tattoo on almost every part on the body. Tattoos were on the top at the head on the bottom of the leg and everywhere in between. A DJ played hard-rock music for enjoyment for people as they strolled through the aisles to either watch people getting tattooed or getting one. Seeing what is new or different style of tattoos was of great interest. Guests got to use the outdoor pool as well and there was a DJ for listening.

The pool was filled with people with varying types and sizes of body art, some with their whole back or arms covered in colorful tattoos. There were also vendors selling tattoo supplies, T-shirts, hats, piercing, hand weights, silkscreen shirts, and foods. There was a cash bar set up for those that wanted a little more than water to drink. Guests could get a make-believe tattoo or a real one or get one removed. Vendors gave out special rates just for this event and came from all over the West. One Vendor had a special where you could get a free tattoo with a $20 tip, but it had to be one of the many

styles, and they were small. It gave people a place to try a tattoo for a reasonable amount. You could even get a tattoo on your motorcycle.

Women in skimpy tops and shorts and men in sleeveless T-shirts seemed to be the normal wear as everyone wanted to show off his beautiful body tattoo artistry. Many tattoo artists are very gifted in giving just the right design tattoo. Giving a tattoo is an art and those giving the tattoo must be extremely brilliant in that area. A tattoo can be very expensive as some vendors sell by the tattoo, The amount of colors used, or by the hour. I asked the rates most charge for a tattoo, and they said it normally runs $150 per hour and up for a big tattoo. Others charge by the tattoo itself and how intricate the tattoo will be. The price depends on the tattoo or the artist and his experience. Tattoos are not cheap.

Guadeloupe Ponte, owner of Scar Treatment Recovery Center, said it is very important to really know if you want a tattoo. She had temporary tattoos that would last 7 days, even in water to make sure. Guadeloupe said there is now a laser tattoo removal machine that is less painful for tattoo removal.

There are tattoos that will cover a bad tattoo after one is removed. Guadeloupe said she was doing a video of the event in hopes of getting it on a reality TV show.

By Janice GoughSEP-IRAs AND Solo 401K

plans are great retirement plan solutions for sole proprietors and small business. Accountants

and financial advisors typically encourage sole proprietors who are the only employees of their respective firms to set up SEP-IRA plans. Yet the primary reason for this advice is that most professionals giving it, are unfamiliar with solo 401(k) Solo plans, which is a very compelling alternative to SEP plans.

The primary benefit of the SEP-IRA is that it’s simplified (as the name implies) and very little expense or paperwork is involved in the setup, implementation, and administration of the plan.

The benefit of 401K Solo plans are that they are protected f rom bankruptcy under ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974), whereas the SEP-IRA is not. The Bankruptcy Act of 2005 generally protects all 401(k) Plan assets from creditor attack in a bankruptcy proceeding. In addition, most states offer greater creditor protection to a Solo 401(k) plan than a SEP IRA outside of bankruptcy.

The SEP-IRA is different than a 401K Solo, because only the employer can contribute to the plan. It provides business owners with a simplified method to contribute toward their employees’ as well as their own retirement savings, unlike a traditional IRA.

SEP-IRAs offers greater contr ibut ion l imits than Traditional IRA, whose maximum contribution limits annually are $5,500 IRA limit or $6,500 for those age 50 or older, whereas

SEP-IRA can be as high as 25% of compensation or $53,000 for 2015, whichever is less (20% in the case of a sole proprietorship or single member LLC).

The Solo 401K allows employees to contribute to their plan. Entrepreneurs who use solo 401Ks can save up to 25% of their compensation in addition to their 2015 contribution limit of $18,000 or $24,000 for those over the age of 50, to a maximum of $59.000. The contributions can be made in pre-tax or after-tax to a Roth-IRA. With IRAs, those who earn high incomes are disallowed from contributing to a Roth IRA or converting their IRA to a Roth IRA. The Solo 401(k) plan contains a built-in Roth sub-account which can be contributed to without any income restrictions. With a Roth Solo 401(k) sub-account, you can make Roth type contributions while having the ability to make significantly greater contributions than with an IRA.

Another significant benefit of the Solo 401(k) plan is that it does not require the participant to hire a bank or trust company to serve as trustee. A Solo 401(k) plan avoids the cost of custodian fees, eliminating the expense and delays associated with an IRA custodian, enabling you to act quickly when the right investment opportunity presents itself.

This flexibility allows the participant to serve in the trustee role and take a tax

deduction for management costs. The deduction for the cost associated with the Solo 401(k) Plan and ongoing maintenance will help reduce your business’s income tax liability. This means that all assets of the 401K trust are under the sole authority of the Solo 401k participants.

The Solo 401K plan also allows you to borrow money from your retirement funds (up to $50,000) and use the funds for any purpose, including help finance your business or pay personal bills. Repayment of the loan is based on a schedule provided when the loan is initiated and must be paid back into the account (including interest) over a term of up to five years. Loan payments must be

made at least quarterly and at a minimum interest rate.

The Solo 401(k) plan is perfect for independent contractors, such as consultants, home businesses and real estate agents. The owner’s spouse may also contribute to the plan as long as he or she is an employee of the business.

HOA Homefront – Reader Questions – Dogs

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCALDear Kelly:

Your articles on HOAs are quite informative. Thank you. Since I live in a condo I am interested in service dogs and “therapy” dogs. Why should some persons have rights in a building’s common areas that other residents with pets do not have? For example, if dogs are not allowed in common areas except for ingress and egress, then why are service dogs allowed at meetings in common area meeting rooms and in the pool area? Please clarify.

A.H., San Diego

Dear A.H.:

State and federal Fair Housing laws require associations to allow reasonable accommodations of disabilities. Those disabilities can be physical or emotional.

Serv ice an ima ls a re specifically trained to perform a given function for their owner [A well-known example is the “Seeing Eye” dog]. Those are certified by certain organizations, and are less common than support or comfort animals.

Companion or comfort animals are not certified or specially trained but are prescribed by a health care professional as necessary for a person’s emotional support. Unfortunately, the law does not give guidance on what animals can be supportive animals, so long as it is prescribed by a health care practitioner. So, we do not know if, for example, cats, snakes, or rodents could qualify. However, the owner can be required to prevent the support animal from being a danger or nuisance to other residents.

Unfortunately, the lack of guidance in the law has allowed abuse of the comfort animal accommodation, and stories abound of alleged instances where one circumvents a “no pet” rule simply by having one’s doctor (or

doctor friend) prescribe a “comfort animal”. The Fair Employment and Housing Council is working on regulations which hopefully will provide important guidance and protect those who need help while curbing abuses by those who don’t.

Best regards, Kelly

Dear Mr. Richardson:In my previous letters of

complaints to my HOA, I refer to the CC&R’s and bylaws of the specific rules of annoyance referring to the dog next door. Whereas before they took action, this time they replied in a letter saying that my complaint of the howling dog seems to be an ongoing neighbor to neighbor dispute and needs a “third” party complaint, although other neighbors hear the howling, including one who is on the board. They are reluctant to complain due to fear of retaliation. I keep reminding the HOA that it is their responsibility to enforce the rules. Do I have a legal right to stop paying my dues until this annoyance is resolved?

C.T. San Pedro

Dear C.T.:One of the hardest issues

for association boards is drawing

the line between pure neighbor-to-neighbor disputes and those in which the HOA needs to intervene. If multiple residents are complaining, that factor indicates board involvement may be more likely.

Consider asking your neighbor to participate with you in an “Internal Dispute Resolution” meeting. Your association is required to have IDR rules. If not, the Civil Code provides an IDR procedure at Section 5910.

Do not withhold your assessments in protest. Even if the association breaches the governing documents and its duties to you, the courts have ruled against offsetting your assessment payments against a debt the HOA owes. That will result in penalties and collection costs against you, and make your problems worse.

Thanks, Kelly

By Desert Star StaffSACRAMENTO, Calif -

A new report says hydraulic fracturing can contaminate groundwater when the excess water is not properly disposed of, but is not linked to earthquakes in California.

In January, a study by the Seismological Society of America linked a series of earthquakes in Ohio to fracking, and there have been similar claims in other states as well.

The new study released Thursday comes from the California Council on Science and Technology and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Jane Long, the

lead scientific researcher, says hydraulic fracturing poses some safety concerns but they’re manageable.

“A lot of things people were concerned about are things that are not as big a problem as they think they are,” says Long. “And some of the practices are things that need to change and need more attention.”

The report says the oil companies should phase out percolation ponds used to dispose of excess water because toxic fracking chemicals can get into the aquifer. And it recommends companies put aside about a third of the chemicals currently in use

because there’s not enough data about them.

The Center for Biological Diversity points to the finding that oil operations can pollute the air in their immediate vicinity. Long is optimistic that the report will spur further reforms.

“Some of them are going to be recommendations that will be very easy to act on right away and I think they will be acted on and some of them are going to require some process,” she says.

The report was required by the 2013 passage of State Senate Bill 4, which established new safety measures for fracking, rules that went into effect on July 1.

By Desert Star StaffBARSTOW, Calif. – A newly-

released poll shows two-thirds of registered voters who live in and around California’s desert regions treasure their desert environments, and approve of the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (DRECP).

The project covers 22 million acres with the goal of planning for renewable energy development, and conservation of land and wildlife. Pollster Lori Weigel with Public Opinion Strategies says backing for the desert plan was strong in every county involved, and even stronger among those who were just learning about the plan.

“One of things they love there is wildlife,” she says. “These are areas where residents feel there’s enough room for things to happen simultaneously.” The survey data indicates an absence of a political party divide, with preference for wind and solar projects on already-disturbed land, and opposition to mining on land within the project area.

Two polling firms conducted the research, which was commissioned by The Pew Charitable Trusts. Public Opinion Strategies is considered a Republican company, while David Metz represents FM3, a Democratic research company

that also conducted the poll.“We have three out of five

conservative Republicans and more than four out of five liberal Democrats telling us they’re supportive of the DRECP, and all ranges of independent and centrist voters in between,” says Metz. “This is one of those rare issues that seems to bring people together across party lines, as opposed to dividing them.” The polling also found broad support for conservation based on historical and cultural values.

The Pew Charitable Trusts provided support for this reporting.

football camp was held at Palm Desert High School on Saturday.

Current NFL defensive back and Palm Desert graduate, James Dockery, organized the event. He also brought some of his friends.

Dockery enjoys giving back to his alma mater and spending time with the program during the offseason.

At the Aztecs football field, James held the first annual James Dockery Youth Football Clinic.

James enlisted the help of some NFL buddies who were also in attendance.

“For the older guys it’s fun. For example, we had a corner here from the Carolina Panthers here Josh Norman, Jordan Poyer from the Browns, Keith McGuil

from the Raiders... So all of us know each other from college and the pros, but for us to just to hang out... and work out and give back to the kids is really fun for us. Just to hang out with some NFL guys I think is something they’ll remember.”

The free, all-day event was open to kids form all over the valley.

The clinic included a morning session for 6-13 year olds, and an afternoon session for those 14 and up.

James says a l l the youngsters were excited even though they see him pretty often.

Tips to Throw Delicious Summer Birthday Parties for KidsBy Desert Star Staff

Noth ing beats the anticipation of your birthday when you are a child. But once school’s out, it can be tough to gather all your child’s friends due to summer camps and family vacations.

To combat this perennial summer birthday concern, some parents throw a big party during the school year and another smaller family shindig on the actual date. Others make sure the day is full of surprises, including yummy, unforgettable treats.

Here are some great ideas to make the day extra delicious, from three lifestyle

and entertaining experts:Berry, Berry Good:

“Every family has their special touches that turn children into excitement charged little bees buzzing around practically giddy with anticipation. For me, that was a can of whipped cream,” writes food and lifestyle expert Coryanne Ettiene, reflecting on her childhood in a recent posting on her “Kitchen Living with Coryanne” blog. “The moment I would open the fridge door and see that bright red top, my heart would nearly burst from happiness while I let dreams of whipped cream swirl in my head.”

With this in mind, a favorite

easy recipe for birthday party strawberry shortcake gives the dessert a mini makeover with individual frozen shortcake bites, says Ettiene, whose nostalgia for her sweet childhood memories led her to partner with Reddi-wip on their summer #PartyReddi promotion, which challenges partiers to create recipes with the whipped topping.

You can make Ettiene’s frozen bites by sl icing strawberries across the waist (so the hole appears in the center), cutting small squares of angel food cake, and stacking them together with colorful paper straws through the middle.

Place them in the freezer for up to an hour and serve with a small bowl of Reddi-wip for dipping. Or for even quicker birthday treats, add a slice of berry and a slice of angel food cake to serving spoons and top with the whipped topping.

Sundae Tea Party: Inspired by the spirit of the

tea parties most girls love so dearly, Dawn Sandomeno and Elizabeth Mascali, co-founders of The Party Bluprints Blog, are sharing tips for a tea party with an ice cream sundae twist. This birthday party idea is perfect for summer and can be hosted indoors or out.

Set a table with personal sundae stations for each guest. Each setting should have its own parfait glass with ice cream and three soup spoons or tasting spoons with toppings.

Choose t r ad i t i ona l

options like sprinkles, mini-marshmallows, and flavored syrups or try something new like fresh fruit, pretzels or popcorn. Then add some fun by placing several cans of Reddi-wip on the table so each child can spritz her sundae herself. Just beware: whipped topping with real cream can go fast, especially with sugared-up fingers on the button, so have enough on hand.

For a fun setting, build your tablescape on a coffee table and provide colorful pillows for seating. Polka dots and stripes can evoke the vibe of a retro sundae shop.

Above all, show your child how special he or she is by celebrating the big day together. These memories can be the biggest treat of all. StatePoint

A: “It was fantastic to record with RSB, and of course Cyril. Cyril and I recorded a song together ‘’Pearl River’’ a year or so before beginning RSB, he is one of the masters.”

Questions 3: How many albums have you recorded with RSB know as Royal Southern Brotherhood?

A: I have recorded 3 albums in total 2-studio albums- “Royal Southern Brotherhood” and Heartsoulblood”and a live album

and DVD “Songs from the Road.”

Question 4: What does “Gone To Texas” title CD/DVD mean to your fans?

A: “Gone to Texas is my studio album. I recorded on Ruf Records. It is my 10th studio album over my career; it is not a DVD. “Gone to Texas’’ the title has to do with the historical saying of one having ‘’gone to Texas’’ when running away from the colonies in early America to start again in Texas. I had a similar story in my life by making a fresh start in Texas after a long battle with drugs and alcohol.

Questions 5: Is it difficult to record a live CD and DVD?

A: ‘’We did just record and release ‘’Song from the Road’’ which is a live CD and DVD.

We recorded in The Woodlands, Texas. It is not so much ‘hard’’, but more about being focused. We did not film or record over several nights. This was a one night all or nothing deal. It was fun and very exciting.”

Question 6: Do you consider Mike Zito a hard worker in the music business?

A: “I do consider ‘’Mike Zito” a hard worker in the music business, maybe an average worker in other fields of employment, but in the music business, yes a hard harder:) I have found that my hard work is what has paid off most for me in my career. It has somewhat set me apart from other musicians,

some more talented, but showing up on time, working your ass off and constancy seems to have paid off for me.”

Question 7: Who are your favorite Blues ‘n’ Rock Singers of past and present?

A: “Muddy Waters! I love Tina Turner; she is one of the greats to me. Bruce Springsteen, Paul Rodgers, Stevie Nicks, Bob Seger, John Fogerty.”

Questions 8: What is your definition for Boogie- and the Blues, and do you think Blues is being played on the radios enough today?

A: “I am not sure; I think Chuck Berry, and Muddy Waters got that all started for me. I don’t think there is enough roots and blues on the radio, but I am hopeful it’s making a comeback.”

Question 9: Do you believe your voice has a velvet sound…. and why?

A: “I don’t know, if my voice has a ‘’velvet” sound …ha-ha…I think it sounds like me, and I am not always happy with the sound, but I think over the years I have gained more control of my voice and the ability to sing, so I have more confidence these days. I certainly enjoy singing a lot.”

Question 10: What is it like to co-write songs with Ruf Records Super Star Cyril Neville of the Royal Southern Brotherhood?

A: “It is a dream come true. Cyril is a certified poet. He speaks from the heart and soul of all

matters and has a way of defining his feelings that are surpassed by very few.” You are correct: Cyril made me stop and cry when reading his heart felt full of soul answers from our interview called Cyril Neville…’Don’t Look Back” title from his new released cd on Ruf Records.

Question 11: What do you like about your backup band? The Wheels?

A: The Wheel is the band. They are fantastic musicians; wonderful people and we all get along so well. We all have similar musical ideas in mind

and love to play for the song.”

Question 12: What messages can you send the youth of today who are not listening to Blues Music and who are not picking up their instruments and performing BLUES?

A: “I would say to give the Blues a chance. It is not the most popular music anymore, but it is the foundation of everything; we hear. I would tell them, if you could learn to play the Blues, you could almost play anything. It feels good to share your feelings with the world, and the Blues allows that freedom.

By Desert Star StaffAfter 17 hours of marathon

talks, the eurozone leaders have reached an agreement over a third three-year bailout for debt-ridden Greece worth around €82-86 billion, which averts the risk of the country leaving the eurozone.

In his Twitter account the President of the European Council Donald Tusk said that agreement on Greece was reached “unanimously”. All of the key participants in the talks acknowledged that the deal means a so-called Grexit was no longer on the agenda.

The program will affect the overall pension reform, reform of the product markets, privatization and changes in labor exchanges, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel after the eurozone summit Monday.

“We have been long engaged in the matter of the size of the program, which is very significant - from €82 to €86 billion over three years,” she said at a news conference.

A write-off of Greece’s debt is not on the agenda, she added.

“It has been agreed to start negotiations on an (European Stability Mechanism) ESM program, which means continued financial support for Greece,” said Tusk. “The decision gives Greece the chance to get back on track with the support of European

partners,” he said, adding there would be”strict conditions.”

Greece agreed to set up a €50 billion fund to repay its debt, said Eurogroup President JeroenDijsselbloem.

“The target size of the fund, which will accumulate assets of Greece, will be €50 billion, and it will be based in Greece. This will create a fund to which funds will be transferred, which will then be monetized through their privatization or commercial use. The fund will be aimed at solving the debt problem, or debt reduction, and it can be used to recapitalize banks,” said Dijsselbloem.

The problem of the recapitalization of banks is one of the key challenges for the eurozone, according to Dijsselbloem. This will require about €25 billion, half of the €50 billion fund, he added.

The European Commission will provide the Greek economy with €35 billion in investments, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker added.

The Greek parliament has to approve all the reform laws by July 15 in order to receive the aid, said Dijsselbloem. The final conclusion of the negotiations on the development of the third program of aid to Athens will require a few more weeks, he added.

The markets and the euro started growing after the Greek agreement. A composite Stoxx Europe 600 Index grew by 1.1 percent at the opening, with the euro rallying to $1,1147 from a Friday reading of $1,1162.

The results achieved at the eurozone summit allow Greece to return to the path of growth, Merkel commented at a press conference after the meeting.

“All in all, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages…I think that Greece has a chance to return to the path of growth,” Merkel said.

“We’ve made a good step to build confidence, but there [are] still a lot of steps to implement

the achieved,” says IMF Chief Christine Lagarde.

The agreement is complex, but Greece avoided the transfer of its state property abroad, as well as financial strangulation and destruction of the financial system, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras commented.

However, a fo rmer Greek ambassador Leonidas Chrysanthopoulos says the new deal is “too tough, too late, the death of Greeks.” Despite the concessions the EU has made to Greece the country is far from being out of the crisis, he told RT.

“These absurd measures do no t reflect the EU we entered back in 1981. It has actually made Greece a colony of Germany, not to say of the European Union,” he said.

Last Thursday Tsipras submitted a new reform plan to its so-called troika of creditors – the IMF, the ECB and the European Commission. When bargaining over a new deal, the PM was asking for a €53.5 billion bailout package over the next three years.

The Greeks voted 61 percent against a bailout package of new austerity measures at a national referendum on July 5. It put Greece on the verge of leaving the eurozone, hastened negotiations, and led to the resignation of Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis.

New Technology Can Help Schools Save MoneyBy Desert Star Staff

Classrooms nationwide are switching to new technologies that are helping them reduce their carbon footprints. Whether they are going paperless, installing compact fluorescent lightbulbs, or using new energy efficient projectors in classrooms, there are many ways schools are becoming greener while saving money in the process.

One important way schools are reducing energy consumption is by switching from traditional mercury lamp projectors to lamp-free ones. Using LASER & LED Hybrid Light technology, lamp-free projectors, such as those

from Casio, consume one-third less power per unit than their traditional counterparts.

Intelligent brightness control, a feature that automatically adjusts projector brightness to suit the room, conserves power by up to 50 percent. To learn more, visit www.CasioLampFree.com.

Schools seeking to make an eco-friendly choice or save money should consider switching to lamp-free projectors, which represents a savings of almost $2,500 over the course of one unit’s lifespan. (StatePoint)

Notice your many and various goals this past year. You’ve climbed the ladder to a pinnacle in order to reach those goals. You have become over time very potent (Pluto), Notice your new authority, one finer tuned, more responsible, aware of the importance to serve others. These are great accomplishments though they felt like great challenges. You’ve done well. Continue.

Each day you demonstrate your true self, an illumined teacher during times of change and transformation, crisis, stress and strain. Actively pursuing a “call”, you barely have time for other realities. Continue speaking with those sharing your concern for humanity’s future. Your resource in helping humanity understand our challenging times is communication. You have created a “garden” of needing-to-be-shared information. We listen, learn and are grateful.

Show others how you value them. Offer praise and recognition to everyone, all the kingdoms, and for everything in your life. Each of us is blessed with creative gifts and abilities. Your gift is communication and love. What you offer helps others grow, transform, achieve, evolve

and grow more. Your gifts move humanity forward spiritually. It’s a contract you made long ago. With the Soul (Ray 2).

You can feel work takes time away from family. Your task and lesson, difficult as it may seem, is to balance the two – work & family. The more difficult this task, the greater the test and Initiation (greater awareness, greater responsibilities). Do you have visions for a different future? Or have you given them up? A new identity is appearing with new dreams and visions. Watch for them.

Your life has assumed greater and expansive dimensions. You’re being asked to love more. So many dreams, inspirations and thoughts moving through your mind yet hidden behind a veil. This brings forth great emotions. Attempting to express yourself you find communication difficult, tangled with sadness. You remember many things from the past. All your travels, loves, journeys. You gather them in a jewelbox of memories. You become Vesta.

A deep hidden creativity is building within. For many years to come creative ideas will appear. You’re being impressed from

spiritual realms to bring forth your artistic creative nature through prayer, meditation, spiritual study, group work, sharing resources with others. You are to garden and collect seeds. Doing so helps express love to all kingdoms. Suspend crystals in each window.

Judgment, criticisms, anger from past experiences determine life in our present/future. Consider changing your thoughts. If you desire freedom, the first is freedom from the past. Before entering the Earth we make contracts with family members. Each family member will act in such a way that our evolutionary growth moves foreword. What seemed so difficult was really a door toward liberation. Have the intention to always radiate forgiveness and Goodwill. Choose to love more.

Expanded communication and creativity, full and rich, are being informed by the journeys taken. Share, write about and communicate your thoughts and experiences. Simultaneously, set aside moments of silence each day for yourself. Allow those you trust to understand your strengths and weaknesses. You are and are not an island. Don’t confuse the two. They are one. However, island life is good for you.

A new world stage prepares itself for you. Sagittarians are publishers, world travelers, philosophers living in no one’s shadow. In fact these adventurous warriors create shadows others stand in. You continue to be at the very edge of change. However, that change is not quite prepared enough for you. Maintain your present direction and state of being. Doors open gradually by themselves. Surprises ahead.

Inner impressions are informing you to take time alone and rest. Focus upon closeness and communication with those you love. More love is then returned. You might unwind from your extraordinary states of responsibility. We award your constant standards of beauty applied to all areas of life. Know that communication may be difficult (Neptune/Chiron). Try anyway. Speak from the heart. Other hearts listen.

Realities appearing in life begin with hopes, wishes, dreams and imagination. Form and matter are shaped by what we imagine until one day our dreams are materialized. Attempt to clarify what is important to you, what you want to pursue, and who you want to be in the years to come.

Sometimes this is difficult. Some of us live only in the moment. But within each moment there is a vision for our future. Capture and ponder upon it.

You may have plans for the immediate future. They may change. There is a collaboration occurring with you and another. Pursuing this will bring about a synthesis that will take you far into the future into a world very different than expected. Understanding the present planetary changes, “seek to serve and not exact due service…seek to heal never hurt.” But at times you are hurting which deepens compassion for your particular task and Pisces duties in life.

would be allowed to continue spinning, but they would only produce stable isotopes and not enrich uranium. Some of the equipment will be removed completely.

Iran will start phasing out its older IR-1 centrifuges in 10 years, will not develop new models, will not increase the number of more advanced centrifuges currently in its possession, and will observe certain restrictions on testing them.

Arak: Iran will modify the Arak nuclear reactor with the help of the international community. It will be used for peaceful research and isotope production. It will not produce plutonium. Spent fuel will be shipped out of Iran for entire lifetime of the reactor. Iran keeps a leadership role in the Arak partnership.

No heavy water will be produced or accumulated for 15 years and Tehran will seek to use reactor designs not requiring heavy water.

Iran is to leave spent fuel re-processing to other nations.

Transparency: Iran will adopt several additional safeguards and allow the IAEA to verify those voluntary measures. The nuclear

watchdog is to monitor uranium stockpiles and centrifuges in Iran, including with modern surveillance measures like online enrichment measurement and electronic seals.

Tehran pledges not to conduct research that could conduct development of a nuclear explosive device, as specified in a technical annex to the agreement.

Lifting of sanctions: The UN Security Council will lift its nuclear-related sanctions from Iran simultaneously with the IAEA-verified implementation of certain measure by Iran. The EU and the US will lift their sanctions, including on banking services, insurance, sale of

aircraft parts, access to airports and a multitude of others, at the same moment.

P ro l i f e r a t i o n - re l a t e d sanctions will be lifted by the EU and the US eight years after the adoption of the agreement or when the IAEA greenlights it. The wordings for America’s actions to lift the restrictions apparently provides for eventual legal battles of the current and future administrations against legislators and individual state authorities to scrap the sanctions.

The US and the EU are expected not to impose new nuclear-related sanctions against Iran as long as the deal holds and respect the spirit and intent of the deal by issuing guidelines and not seeking to hurt normalization of trade with Iran.

By Anthony Grant Sometimes all you need to

cut the desert heat down to size is a short stay in a bastion of cool: the Valley Ho in Scottsdale, Ariz. is just such a solution. And lest you think Palm Springs has a monopoly on the mid-century modern vibe, recall that the 1950s happened everywhere, and for a truly unique evocation of that decade’s design details, you really should make your way across the ethereal Sonoran Desert to Scottsdale and what it is undoubtedly its most compelling

hotel destination. Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner obviously thought so: after all, the Hollywood couple had their private wedding reception here in 1957.

The hotel, which is large (191 rooms total), had opened the year prior and quickly became a star attraction in its own right and a favored hideaway spot for celebrities wishing to escape the spotlight of L.A. and even Palm Springs, about a three-and-one-half hour drive away. A huge renovation was completed in 2008 and though more is on the

way, both the guestrooms and common areas sparkle as if they opened yesterday. The rooms that face one of the two swimming pools (one larger and more social, the other more for the quiet crowd) are fine, but I recommend the splashier trappings of one of the Tower guest rooms or suites. There are 48 of these, and you can get a great view over the hotel grounds and dramatic sunrises over the desert floor from up here. Also, from in the front you have quick access to the VH Spa and ZuZu, the Valley

Ho’s signature restaurant with its modern take on the classic all-American restaurant of the 1950s, serving seasonal American fare inside and on the shaded patio. I sampled the Bananas Foster French toast for breakfast, which was delicious, and everywhere the service is friendly, whether poolside, at the ZuZu Lounge (serving craft cocktails such as blood orange margaritas) and even at the reception desk.

In short the Valley Ho offers anything but the cookie-cutter hotel experience, and in this day

and age that is truly something to ‘yelp’ about. The location is great too, right next to Scottsdale’s arts district with a considerable area of shops, restaurants and museums. Even better, the hot season brings with it all kinds of special deals and packages, such as the Sweet Suite Deal: you can save 30% off the prevailing rates on Tower Suite or Loft Suite; you can chill ax in high desert style. Summer WeddingsWhen it comes to getting

married in the summer, you can count on an outdoor ceremony being a bit toasty.

One way to lighten the heat of the day is through your color choices.

Keeping your color scheme light will help your bridal party in particular.

Below are the hottest spring and summer colors for 2015 as put out by Pantone, the corporation that produces the Pantone Matching System used in a variety of industries to find and incorporate the perfect color for a specific project.

While Pantone’s l ist is extensive, the options belowcan fit best with your wedding ceremony and reception to give them the hue you’re looking for.

BLUE IS INWe all know the saying,

“Someth ing borrowed, something blue.” Brides who like to mix this motto into their wedding décor are in luck.

Pantone describes scuba blue as an “energizing shade that takes us off to an exotic paradise.” Who doesn’t want their wedding to emit that vibe?

Even if your wedding colors aren’t strictly blue, you may be able to match this rich tone with other colors to find your perfect combination.

Other popular blue options this year are the classic variety and aquamarine, both of which inspire calm, confidence and harmony when displayed effectively.

TONE IT DOWNYou may think vibrant

reds or bright yellows when conjuring up summertime colors.

According to Pantone’s list, you may want to tone it down a bit.

Toasted almond, for example, is a sun-tanned neutral that can be paired with nearly any other color. Pantone calls the shade “timeless and versatile — an organic that speaks to authenticity and all that is neutral.”

If you’re looking to spice it up a bit without evoking wintertime or holiday emotions, tangerine could be the shade for you. “Good natured and friendly,” according to Pantone, this color will give you a bright hue to work with when choosing your invitations, tablecloths and even bridesmaid dresses.

Try as you might, every little detail on your wedding day will not likely go as you envision. One of the areas that can cause a big hiccup is the time between the ceremony and the reception.

Let’s say your church can only coordinate a noon ceremony and the reception hall you want to book can only open its doors around 5 p.m.

Unless you’re putting together the longest ceremony in wedding day history, you’re going to have a time gap.

You and your wedding party will likely have no issue filling this time. With pictures and limo rides around town, you’ll be on the way to the reception before you know it.

But what about your guests, who traveled from

near and far to celebrate your special day with you? How are they supposed to fill their time between the two functions?

Even if you think you already have enough to worry about, it would be a considerate gesture to offer some ideas and options for this conundrum. Here are some ideas:

Distract Your Guests: Is there someone in your family with a larger house nearby who wouldn’t mind hosting a get-together?

Start asking early in the planning phase to avoid overwhelming them, and offer to pay for all of the snacks, finger foods and drinks so you’re not putting too much of a burden on them.

Give Them Options:

If possible, include in the invitations a list of fun options that your guests could check out while you’re wrapping up your photos.

Do you have any nearby museums, galleries or other tourist attractions? Don’t forget to include ideas for transportation — or even bus passes — if you’d like to go the extra mile for your close friends and family.

Rent a Boat: Particularly if your wedding is near the water, you can really impress your guests by renting a boat to take everyone out between the ceremony and reception.

A couple of hours on a relaxing boat with cocktails, appetizers and music beats waiting in your car for the reception to start.

THE DREADED GAP

The process of buying a wedding dress should come with a manual.

It’s the most important dress you’ll ever wear, and there are many things to remember, from proper sizing to fabric care.

The experience can be overwhelming, which is why so many brides-to-be have found themselves regretting their dress-buying decisions come wedding day. Don’t let that be you.

WHEN TO SHOPA common mistake when

it comes to dress shopping is settling on a particular size or style too early in the planning process. Even if you fall in love with a dress during your initial online searches, there is

no reason to order your dress more than a year ahead of time.

This means waiting to visit bridal shops until you are financially ready to buy. An average wedding dress costs more than $1,200, according to the XO Group, Inc., a global media and technology leader.

That’s a big investment. Imagine shelling out that kind of money for a dress too early in the planning phase and then finding another option for the same price — or even less.

Buying a dress is like buying a new car. If you settle on the first test drive, you could be missing out on other options that may actually better fit your tastes.

TOO MANY OPINIONS

Behind every great bride-to-be is a great mother or bridesmaid-to-be. So stop there when it comes to inviting people out dress shopping with you. Take the people whose opinions you value the most and make it as relaxing an experience as possible.

Remember, you’re not looking for people to tell you what you want to hear. Sometimes, only your mom or best friend will have the courage to tell you if a dress just doesn’t look right.

Not only will you be less stressed trying to coordinate a day of dress shopping for a party of 10 people, but your invitees will feel more special that they were included in your special day.

As sweaty palms and a racing heart work in tandem to try to make you forget

the speech you prepared for the wedding toast, just remember to take a deep

breath. Relax. You’re among friends.

The job of a maid of

honor or best man is all fun and games until it comes time to deliver the perfect speech.

That’s when some people can get nervous or worried about saying the wrong thing.

The truth is, as long as you keep your toast appropriate, you really can’t say the wrong thing. The bride and groom have selected you for this role, and your words of encouragement on their special day will help mark their transition from engagement to marriage.

KEEP IT CLASSYYou want to be

remembered for delivering a great speech, not for shouting vulgarities or making a fool out of yourself. So if there is alcohol involved, know your limits and stick to them.

KEEP IT SHORTYour bridal party is

on a schedule. Dinner is served at a certain time. The fatherdaughter dance starts

at certain time. Even the DJ begins his service at a certain time.

Talk to the bride and groom ahead of time about how long they would like your speech to be. If they leave it up to you, shoot for three to five minutes.

Anything longer can turn into a ramble that may distract from the celebration, and anything less may convey that you really didn’t put much time into your preparation.

KEEP IT SWEETHumor is a great way

to break the ice during a speech, but you shouldn’t rely on it for your entire time with the microphone.

The key to a great speech is knowing when to incorporate humor into personal anecdotes.

You know you’ve knocked out a winning speech when you can garner a mix of tears and laughter from the crowd.

You just wrapped up the most stressful month — or months — of your life, and what’s the first thing you’re going to do now?

Lug around a bunch of luggage all week on your honeymoon?

This week should be all about simplicity.

By pack ing too many outfits, shoes and unnecessary beauty products, you’re only complicating your relaxing trip. So while you’re preparing to head out to Hawaii or even somewhere local, keep a goal in mind to only pack what you really need.

You’ll thank yourself later as you enjoy a more pared-down vacation with your new spouse.

THINK SMALLBigger isn’t always better

when it comes to luggage. In fact it rarely is. You’ll want to

think as small as possible — as long as you’re still able to fit your essential items.

Obv ious l y, eve r y honeymoon will call for different essentials. If you’re going on a safari through the Australian wilderness in the heat of the summer, you’ll need plenty of T-shirts, shorts and sun-protective hats.

A cruise through the vast Alaskan landscape will require plenty of sweaters, hats and scarves, especially if you’re going to be doing some nature sight-seeing.

Whatever your outfit needs call for, try to fit everything into a reasonably sized bag.

THE EXTRASWhen packing for your

trip, you’re not likely to forget the most obvious, such as like clothes, passports or plane tickets. It’s the little things that can be overlooked when you’re in a rush.

You’ll want to remember all of the medications that you usually take, as well as any pain relievers, anti-nausea and anti-itch remedies, as well.

Don’t forget some extra spending money that isn’t in plastic form. Bring along about $50 to $100 in cash for tipping, especially if you’re going on an all-inclusive

resort. Your room, food and drinks may be paid for, but your service professionals will be expecting a little recognition of their efforts.

THE RULES OF A GREAT TOAST

Stress can cause us to make unhealthy decisions when it comes to our diets. As your wedding day nears, how many times have you stopped to assess your personal eating habits?

As you try to balance al l of your different responsibilities, it can be hard to count calories or make sure you’re taking in the right vitamins to keep your heart in prime working condition.

You may have heard of certain fruits, vegetables and meats marketed by companies as superfoods. The American Heart

Association warns that, as with any kind of food, overeating is not a smart part of a healthy diet.

But the AHA does agree that many superfoods can be good for your overall health, concentration and stress levels — all important for any bride.

The Assoc i a t i on recommends checking with your physician if you’re having symptoms such as headaches, sleeping problems, a short temper or low morale. These can be signs of harmful stress that could potentially harm your heart.

It also recommends c o n s u m i n g c e r t a i n superfoods in moderation to help stave off heart issues.

SALMONThe American Heart

Association recommends eating at least two 3.5-ounce servings of fish per week for a healthy heart. It says the fish is low in saturated fat in high in omega-3 fatty acids. They can decrease the risk of abnormal heartbeats, reduce triglycerides and slow the growth of plaque in the arteries.

NUTS, LEGUMESAND SEEDS

These types o f superfoods are good sources of protein and polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats when eaten in moderation, says the American Heart Association.

This group offers great variety, including unsalted almonds, peanuts, pistachios and walnuts.

Four servings per week is the recommended portion from the American Heart Association.

BERRIESThe American Heart

Association recommends eight or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day for maintaining heart health.

Berries are a vital part of this recommendation, as options such as blueberries and strawberries have high levels of phytochemicals called flavonoids.

One study reported by the American Heart Association found that women who consumed more blueberries and strawberries had a lower risk

of heart attack.

With summer in full swing, now is a good chance to spend some quality time reading some great new music books.Title: Guitar Player: The Inside Story of the First Two Decades of the Most Successful Guitar Player Magazine EverAuthors: Edited by Jim Crockett with Dara CrockettPublisher: Backbeat Books

Tell me more: With a story as colorful and diverse as Guitar Player magazine, it’s no wonder that long-time editor and publisher Jim Crockett enlists a talented and vast field off friends, family, writers and famous fret-masters to help pull together the seminal publication’s early years in the outstanding Guitar Player: The Inside Story of the First Two Decades of the Most Successful Guitar, which at nearly 300 pages also boasts countless great archival images from the magazine and those who helped

guide it from its founding in 1967 to its 1989 sale by founder Bud Eastman and Jim Crockett. It’s unusual for a magazine to get this kind of celebration, but then Guitar Player was no mere magazine. It helped inspire generations of guitar greats, many of whom have written tributes in the volume. Among the heartfelt contributions come from the celebrated likes of Joe Perry (Aerosmith), Steve Morse (Kansas, Deep Purple), Craig Chaquico (Jefferson Starship) and George Benson. Title: I Fought the Law: The Life and Strange Death of Bobby FullerAuthors: Miriam Linna and Randell FullerPublisher: Kicks Books

Tell me more: Although just about every rock ‘n’ roll fan knows the timeless 1966 hit “I Fought The Law,” not very many

know very much about the young Texas native who continued to successfully champion Buddy Holly-styled American rock during the midst of the British Invasion. Now the full story of Bobby Fuller (1942-1966) is assessed by the singer-songwriter-guitarist’s brother Randell Fuller (the bassist of the Bobby Fuller Four) and Miriam Linna in the rewarding “I Fought the Law: The Life and Strange Death of Bobby Fuller.” Nearly 50 years after the death of his brother (Bobby Fuller was found dead at the age of 23 on July 18, 1966 in the front seat of a car doused in gasoline outside his Hollywood apartment), Randell Fuller finally opens up to share the full story about growing up with Bobby Fuller, their youth and the mysterious events that continue to surround the young star’s death. Information: kicksbooks.com.

Title: The History of

Canadian Rock ‘n’ RollAuthor: Bob MersereauPublisher: Backbeat Books

Tell me more: Until recently, Canadian artists never seemed to receive the acclaim of their American and British counterparts. “The History of Canadian Rock ‘n’ Roll” does a good job of celebrating the far-flung contributions of Canada’s music notables, including Neil Young, Arcade Fire, Joni Mitchell, Rush, Alanis Morrissette, Bryan Adams, Leonard Cohen, The Band and dozens more. It’s nice to see the author hasn’t forgotten to feature some of the nation’s under-the-radar heroes including the great singer-songwriter-guitar great Bruce Cockburn and singer-songwriter k.d. lang. The book provides a fast-paced and informative read. The sterling volume’s foreword comes courtesy of Rush drummer Neil Peart. Information: backbeatbooks.com.

Title: The Living Years: The First Genesis MemoirAuthor: Mike RutherfordPublisher: Thomas Dunne

Tell me more: As one of the founders of British band Genesis (along with Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel), Mike Rutherford has a story to tell. Now, the famed bassist/guitarist chronicles his life as a musician while also delving into his own family’s history and the complex relationships that forge who we are. While learning about Rutherford and the members of Genesis, there is also a parallel look at Rutherford’s father, Captain William Rutherford, and the events and places where life took Mike Rutherford in Genesis, as well as with his ‘80s solo project Mike + The Mechanics. A fascinating read. In

Debut, Janet Jackson’s ‘No Sleeep’ Claims #9 Spot On Urban AC Chart, #9 Spot On Billboard Hot R&B And #6 Spot On Billboard R&B / Hip Hop Digital Songs.

LOS ANGELES, -- “No Sleeep,” the debut single from Janet Jackson’s first studio album in seven years, has entered the Top Ten on Urban AC chart at # 9 only two weeks after its release, it was announced by the singer’s Rhythm Nation label and its distributor, BMG. The single also claims the #9 spot on Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart and the #6 spot on Billboard’s R&B/Hip Hop Digital Songs chart. “No Sleeep” was featured as part of the tribute performance celebrating Ms. Jackson’s impact on music at the recent BET

Awards in which she received the inaugural Ultimate Icon: Music Dance Visual Award, presented to her by longtime friends and collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

“No Sleeep,” from the Queen of Pop who is also being called the Queen of Insomnia due to the success of the single, is the smash curtain-raiser of Ms. Jackson’s multi-layered return to performance, including her Unbreakable World Tour which kicks off in Vancouver late next month, and the Fall release of her yet-untitled first studio album in seven years. The blazing career resumption of the most bar-setting female pop superstars is a resumed collaboration with legendary producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who co-produce with her the album. TO ADVERTISE CALL 760-67 1-6604

By Dan MarinelliCincinnati, OH – There was a

playoff atmosphere at Cincinnati Reds’ Great American Ballpark on Monday, but oddly, it is nowhere near October.

No, these cheers were for Cincinnati’s Todd Frazier, narrowly edging out Los Angeles Dodgers’ rookie Joc Pederson 15-14, to win the newly overhauled MLB Home Run Derby.

The cheers were not solely for Frazier, who is now the back-to-back Derby champion. The claps, oohs and ahs were also for the increased entertainment value of an event that, up until last year, was considered long and boring.

Essentially, the All-Star week event was glorified batting practice. Not to mention a participant could hit more homeruns in the first round than the eventual winner did in all three combined, but still lose the derby because he was too tired in the last round.

This was different, with a new commissioner comes new and fun ideas, apparently. The MLB left the old top-four-advance method and now, seed each batter one though eight, with one facing eight, two facing seven and so on.

Four minutes was all the players were allotted in each individual round. Each batter received one time out at the time of the players choosing, a quick break when the four minutes ended and an extra 30 seconds tacked on to account for arbitrary time wasted during the round.

Unlike the NBA’s Slam Dunk Contest, the MLB does receive good participation from the game’s top talent. Joining Frazier and Pederson was Albert Pujols (Angels), Josh Donaldson (Blue Jays), Joc Pederson, Prince Fielder (Rangers), Kris Bryant (Cubs) and Manny Machado (Orioles).

All top four seeds (Pujols, Frazier, Donaldson and

Pederson) advanced to the semifinal, with Pederson and Frazier advancing to the final. Frazier ended the regulation, tied 14-14 with Pederson but in the extra 30-second time period, Frazier put the event to rest.

The 2015 Home Run Derby was will go down as one of the more significant in MLB history. To out this into perspective, with timed rounds, the eight batters hit 159 homeruns, the most all-time, breaking the previous record by 51.

The overall reception was positive and but for some minor improvements, look for the derby to be identical next year. Bravo, Todd Frazier, for taking home the trophy in 2015, but an even bigger congratulations belongs to Major League Baseball for remodeling their flagship, non-game, All-Star event.

T R AV E L BY BEVERLY COHN

How lucky can one travel writer be? I’ll tell you how lucky. I was the only American journalist invited on a recent press trip to Northern Ireland. The select group of writers flew in from all over the world including, India, South Africa, Sweden, Holland, and Germany. This opportunity was especially exciting since I had already been to the Republic of Ireland on three previous press trips, covering most of the southeast and southwest. Exploring Belfast, and the surrounding towns, was a new experience that I was very much looking forward to.

As a result of the people, places, and historic sites we visited, there is vast amount of material to be shared, so much so, that my coverage will be divided into three parts, and will include fascinating visits with royals living both in Northern Ireland and in the Republic of Ireland.

Day 1: The theme of this particular press trip was “Houses, Castles & Ruins,” so the first visit on our packed itinerary was to the 800-year old Carrickfergus Castle. It is a Norman fortress located north of Belfast, in the town of Carrickfergus in County Antrim. Its position, overlooking Belfast Lough,* made it easy to defend itself from invading armies from Scotland, England, Ireland, and France. The castle played an important military role

during World War I. Although the stronghold was finally decommissioned in 1928, it served as an air raid shelter during World War II, and remains one of the best-preserved medieval structures in Ireland.

During medieval times, many banquets were held in the castle’s Viking Hall. The etiquette customs were somewhat different from the etiquette customs of today. For example, you were expected to bring your own cutlery, which would be an eating knife and a spoon. However, most of the food was eaten using hands. It was considered polite to cut each other’s food, which was served in long trenchers and was scooped out by hand, with bread used to absorb any liquids. If your host offered you a knife, it was a mark of great respect. At one point, everyone shared a goblet, so it was considered good manners to wipe your mouth before drinking from the communal goblet. Banquet guests were seated in order of their rank, with the lowest at the far end of the table. I have not been able to verify this, but our guide told us that if you needed to wipe food off your mouth, you simply leaned over to the person sitting next to you and used his sleeve.

For those of us who sighed at the relationship between Queen Guinevere and Sir Lancelot, I hate to dispel that romantic image, but please bear in mind that both the church and the king frowned upon bathing. It was believed that a bath was dangerous and immoral, leading to sin and debauchery. One royal, Lady Anne, defied that tradition and actually bathed four times a year – each at the start of a new season. Life expectancy? Age 40.

Bathroom habits were not much more civilized than the dining habits. A hole was cut into the concrete for the king to sit upon. The excrement simply

slid down the side of the castle eventually creating, well, a lot of brown streaks. It is thought that Queen Victoria actually introduced the idea of chamber pots, known as piss pots, which certainly beat sitting on a cement hole.

Our lodgings for the next few nights would be at the Malmaison Hotel, a four-star boutique luxury hotel centrally located in Belfast on Victoria Street. Formerly a Victorian warehouse, the hotel is a short walk to the Victoria Square Shopping Mall, as well as restaurants and coffee shops. The staff was cordial, the rooms were small, but clean, and the bathroom had a few essential toiletries. My only criticism is the low lighting. It was so dark that I needed to use my cell phone flashlight to find things in the closet. Putting on makeup was nearly impossible as there was not enough light anywhere in the room or the bathroom to actually see what you were doing. It would be helpful if management could “shine a light” on that problem.

DAY 2: After a good night’s sleep in a comfortable bed, we

were off and running to explore the Causeway Coastal Route, one of the world’s top five road trips. As we drove along to our next destination, which was to be a visit to Glenarm Castle and its famous Walled Garden, our eyes feasted upon on a profusion of beautiful daffodils and yellow and orange wildflowers that dotted the roadside.

One of the oldest castles in Ireland, and only 40 minutes from Belfast, and a mere 18 miles from Scotland, the Jacobean-style mansion is quite imposing. It was home to the Earls of Antrim for over 400 years. Glenarm Castle is the home of Viscount and Viscountess Dunluce (the McDonnells) and their children. Prior to living in Glenarm, their ancestors lived at Dunluce Castle, which was set afire so a robbery could take place. The current castle is filled with Irish furniture and the walls are covered with portraits of family members going back to the 17th century. Its major business is the Glenarm Organic Salmon Ltd., the only Atlantic salmon farm in the Irish Sea, and a major source of the world’s finest organic salmon. Cattle and ewes are also raised organically. They are fed clover and grass resulting in organic Beef Shorthorn, said to be superior to the famous Kobe beef. The farm’s beef and lamb have won several prestigious awards and is served in outstanding restaurants throughout Ireland, including the Merchant Hotel’s, The Great Room, which I’ll tell you about in Part 2.

A most delightful head gardener, Andrew Morrow, with a glint in his eye, and the subtle Irish humor, shared his wonderful story, very similar to the story of Sabrina Fair. Like Sabrina, his dad worked as a chauffeur for 50 years, so he, too, grew up on the estate. When the head gardener passed away, Lady Antrim asked him to take over his duties. He was quite surprised and said: “I can’t even take care of myself.”

But he was trained and is now in total charge of the sprawling gardens. He took us on a guided tour of the magnificent grounds, explaining that the walled garden supplied the castle with fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the year. His love and passion for gardening was quite apparent. At the end of our horticultural experience, Andrew said, “Gardening is in the DNA of the Irish.”

Following the garden adventure, Andrew then took us on an exclusive tour of the house, which is only open occasionally to the public. He told an interesting story about a “weigh chair.” It seems that guests were weighed before they entered the dining room, their poundage measured in stones. The very same guests were weighed on their way out to make sure they didn’t steal any of the silverware. I suppose there was no accounting for the amount of food consumed at dinner, which may have inched up the weight a stone or two.

Next, we were treated to tea, which was served by a cheerful, very efficient George the butler, who shared stories about the family. The family stays only three months a year, as it revolves around the school year for their two children – Alex nine and Helena seven. The children love gardening and every morning get fresh eggs from the chickens. Not an egg carton in sight.

Fortified with tea and treats, we were off to have lunch in the beautiful French Rooms located in Bushmills, once a thriving linen-producing center. It should be noted that by the end of the 19th century, Belfast was the linen capital of the world. Its dominance ended during the “troubles” that started in the 60s and it has never recovered.

Back to our lunch. We were served a Gourmet Grocer Platter with food from local Irish artisans and specialty French produce.

Trade Association we belong to has purchased the above clas-sifieds. Determining the value of their service or product is advised by this publication. In order to avoid misunderstandings, some advertisers do not offer employ-ment but rather supply the read-ers with manuals, directories and other materials designed to help their clients establish mail order selling and other businesses at home. Under NO circumstance should you send any money in advance or give the client your checking, license ID, or credit card numbers. Also beware of ads that claim to guarantee loans regardless of credit and note that if a credit repair company does business only over the phone it is illegal to request any money before delivering its service. All funds are based in US dollars. Toll free numbers may or may not reach Canada. aCalifornia law re-quires that contractors taking jobs that total $500 or more (labor and/or materials) must be licensed by the Contractors State License Board. State law also requires that contractors include their license number on all advertising. You can check the status of your licensed contractor at www.cslb.ca.gov or 800-321-CSLB

New Lasers Fix Tattoo Woes By Jackie Devereaux

PALM SPRINGS, CA– Tattoo enthusiasts, some stripped down to tiny bikinis or short shorts, strutted their colorful inked skin at the Palm Trees and Tattoo Convention held at the Hard Rock Hotel last weekend.

While hundreds of proud tattoo lovers gathered poolside to show off their bodies etched with colorful images from head to toe, others lined up to get unwanted tattoos removed by a laser.

Body Art application was the main trust of the convention. Tattoo artists from all over the region showcased their talent during this three-day event. There also was a special booth for permanent makeup application, a poolside cabana for bling-bling tattoos, and free laser tattoo removal inside the spa for those who wanted to erase a bad decision.

Guadalupe Ponte, owner of the Scar Treatment Recovery Center (STRC) in Palm Desert, set up the Q-Switch Alexandrite, a state-of-the-art, laser machine inside the Rock Spa. Registered nurses performed the laser procedures free to participants who shared compelling stories about why they wanted their tattoos removed. Those chosen also agreed to appear on Ponte’s new reality TV pilot filmed during the convention.

In the past, tattoos were darkly associated with people who lived on society’s edge – gang members, bikers and hardened ex-cons who covered their bodies with ink to show their

affiliations or brute toughness. However, that perception

has changed drastically over the past ten years. Today, tattoos are considered de rigueur – if you don’t have one, then you’re not hip, slick and cool. Women who use to cringe at the idea of getting a tattoo, now show off their colorful flower, butterfly or star on their shoulder or back. Some venture even further getting full body tattoos. But not everyone is happy with their tattoos and want to change them.

“There are several reasons why someone wants a tattoo removed,” Ponte said. “Peer pressure from family or loved ones, a lifestyle change, bad artistry, or to cover-up a bad decision made in their youth. Others want them removed because they can’t find a job, and many outgrow their tattoos and decide to change them,” Ponte added.

“An even deeper reason is that receiving tattoos is a form of fixation. They feel pain to release emotional pain, and therefore it is addicting,” Ponte added. “Many people who suffer from eating disorders, early childhood abuse, drug addiction and other maladies find tattooing an outlet for their pain,” she added. Ponte’s reality TV show is geared to help people deal with these difficult issues.

If you’re interested in getting a tattoo, think it through, Ponte said. Don’t be spontaneous, know what you want beforehand. Make sure you get it performed by a responsible tattoo artist with a verifiable tract record. Go see his or her work first, then decide.

Ponte employs tattoo artists who perform body art work at her clinic, as well as dermagraphic technicians who help remove unwanted or old ones. She plans to open a full-service tattoo

removal clinic with the Q-Switch Alexandrite laser in Palm Desert sometime this fall. For more information, call her clinic at 760-340-1136.

The exquisitely presented platter consisted of Joycelyn soup, tomato-based French onion soup topped with a cheesy crouton; oak smoked Donegal salmon with lemon and caper berries; Cooleeney hand-made Irish cream cheese; cured meat selection from Aveyron, France; Love Olive, an exotic mix from Glenavy; Kookycook pesto from Portrush; and sourdough baguette slices with unsalted Ballyrashane butter. A delicious time was had by all, and then we were off again,

this time to experience the Giant’s Causeway.

The Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland’s iconic World Heritage Site, is a fascinating geological phenomenon. It is estimated to have formed about 60 million years ago as a result of volcanic eruptions, followed by lava cooling to form a hard rock called basalt. 40,000 interlocking columns were created, some of which appear to have certain shapes such as a giant boot, a harp, or a camel. Locals believe there is magic in these rocks and that if you stand on them, you

will definitely feel something. Try it and see if you feel a tingle in your feet.

The Giant’s Causeway is also steeped in legend linked to Irish giant Finn MacCool, who it is said wanted to do battle with Benandonner, a rival giant in Scotland. The story tells of Finn building huge stepping stones across the sea so that the Scottish giant could cross to Ireland and do battle with him. However, when Finn saw the enormous size of the giant, he ran home to his wife and asked her to disguise him as her baby. When Benandonner saw this huge “baby,” he feared that the father would be too big to defeat and went on his merry way back to Scotland. So, using deception, Finn MacCool emerged victorious, and the legend lives on to this day.

A f te r th is awesome experience, we were off to take a quick look at the remains of Dunluce Castle, some of which are thought to date back to the 1200s AD. Perched on a steep cliff overlooking the sea, this medieval castle is on the Antrim coast, quite close to the Giant’s Causeway and like almost all of the castles, saw its share of battles. We wandered through the ruins; our imaginations painting pictures of what might have been the castle’s former splendor.

Thus ended another fabulous day of visiting Northern Ireland’s

ancient sites. The “dessert” was a scrumptious dinner at Deanes Meat Locker Brassierie, where we enjoyed delicious, exquisitely prepared food and excellent wine. Incidentally, contrary to popular belief, corned beef and cabbage is not the national Irish dish and is only eaten occasionally, with very few Irish people eating it on St. Patrick’s Day. So, the polite thing to do is to order something off the menu and have corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day in America.

Stay tuned for Part 2, which will take you to two more unique castles, one of which is the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II in Northern Ireland, and a historic gathering place for heads of states from all over the world.

*National Trust: The National Trust is a UK conservation charity that protects historic places, such as castles, houses, gardens, mills, farmland, islands, nature preserves, etc. They hold leases on about 5,000 properties with they rent out at a reduced price with the understanding that the tenant makes the property available to the public on a regular basis.

Northern Ireland – The Land of Castles, Legends & Myths

Two photos, allegedly of notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, who escaped the Altiplano high security prison on the weekend, have been leaked online.

The photos were published by ElBlogDelNarco, a blog about fighting drug crime in Mexico, and reportedly sent by one of his sons after the leader of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel escaped. In one Guzman is seen sitting in a plane cockpit while in the other he is relaxing with

a bottle of beer in his hand. The legitimacy of the photos

has not been immediately confirmed, with some questioning whether the Guzman family would put his freedom in jeopardy by providing more information about him. However one of his sons had apparently hinted on Twitter that his father would escape days before it happened.

Meanwh i l e Mex i can investigators detained for questioning almost 50 prison officials, suspecting that some of

them may have aided Guzman to escape.

Guzman “had to have” had help from among the staff of the Altiplano prison, Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong told journalists at a briefing on Monday.

Chong said prison warden and two other officials have been fired over the failure to keep Guzman behind bars, but rejected the notion that he should leave his office as well.

Mexico’s Attorney General

Arely Gomez, who was also taking part in the media briefing, said authorities would offer 60 million pesos (US$3.82 million) for information leading to capture of the high-profile fugitive.

The crime boss escaped Altiplano through a 1.5km tunnel leading to a half-constructed building. It was made possible because his surveillance left two blind spots for privacy concerns, Chong revealed. Guzman got rid of a tracker bracelet he was forced to wear and smashed

bulbs lighting up the tunnel as he fled, the minister said.

The escape was the second for Guzman in 15 years. He was previously caught in 1993, but in 2001 fled, bribing prison guards. He was arrested again in 2014.

The getaway is a humiliating blow to Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, who is now visiting France. Interior Minister Chong had to cut his participation in the tour short and return to Mexico to head the manhunt after Guzman.

Seth MacFarlane’s humor is not for everyone. It can be crude, politically incorrect and vulgar. In “Ted 2,” about a raunchy Teddy bear named Ted (voiced by MacFarlane), it is all the above in combination with some warm. Tender moments and a razzle-dazzle Busby Berkeley inspired dance sequence performed at Ted‘s elaborate wedding to a real-live girl. Eventually, Ted’s marriage starts to come apart at the seams. At this point, the very odd couple decides to adopt a baby, since anatomically speaking, Ted can’t be a dad because—well. You fill in the blanks.

The couple’s first choice for a sperm donor is Ted’s best friend John (Mark Wahlberg), but his clumsy attempt ends in a messy disaster at the sperm bank. The next step is a nighttime raid on the mansion of football stars Tom Brady (in a cameo appearance) that also ends unsuccessfully, but provides lots of laughs, particularly for the men and teen-aged boys in the audience.

There are quite a few star sightings throughout, including a funny bit by Liam Neeson, who portrays a cautious cereal buyer in the convenience store where Ted used to work before he was fired. As a Teddy bear, Ted is now legally considered property after a court battle goes awry. Now Ted can no longer earn a salary or be legally married. To reclaim Ted’s identity and personal rights John and Ted seek help from a young lawyer (Amanda Seyfried). This will be her very first case. Morgan Freeman, as the nation’s leading civil rights lawyer, is also consulted, but will this towering voice of authority join in their fight for equal rights for a Teddy bear?

If you are easily offended,

stay away, but if you are open to an often funny comedy that is a guilty pleasure for movie snobs, you may find this raunchy comedy unbearably comical at times. Pardon the pun. From Universal Pictures, rated R for language, sexual references

••••••••••••••Check out PBS for fine DVDs.

Two of their newest releases deal about the nature of crows and the importance of royal clothing. Both are available on-line at PBS.org or in stores like Target and Barnes and Noble.

If someone asked you to name the smartest animals in the world would you think of adding crows to the list? If that never occurred to you, think again because crows are right up there with such bright beasts as elephants and chimpanzees. The fine PBS show “A Murder of Crows” sheds brand new light on these amazing birds with an attitude. Fresh research presented in this fascinating “Nature” segment, now available on DVD or Blu-ray, shows us that like elephants and chimpanzees, crows are able to use tools. They can recognize each other’s voices and 250 distinct calls and are very social. Crows mate for life (hey, that’s better than lots of humans), and they raise their young for up to five years. Crows can also recognize individual humans and pick them out in a crowd up to two years later. So, if you thought, crows were a nuisance or spooky, as presented by Alfred Hitchcock or Edgar Allen Poe, think again. Running time is approximately 60 minutes.

••••••••••••••Dr. Lucy Worsley, chief

curator of Historic Royal Palaces, presents the history of royal fashion in PBSs “Tales From the Royal Wardrobe.” The modern-day paparazzi can’t get enough of Royals and the clothes they wear. Princess Diana was constantly photographed in her gorgeous gowns and now Prince William’s lovely wife; Kate is in the media spotlight.

Even so, this interest is not new; it has always been this way. According to Dr. Lucy Worsley, for over 400 years, the public has been intrigued by what the Royals chose to wear. She sees it as a meticulously orchestrated piece of theater managed by the Royals themselves to control the accurate image and project the proper image to their subjects,

from Elizabeth, I to the present Queen Elizabeth II. If you enjoy fashion and royal politics, it is fun to learn that kings and queens who have not carefully choreographed every aspect of their wardrobe paid the price. As timeless as the monarchy itself, royal fashion is, and always has been, as much about politics as it is about the cut.
