The news of Camacho's shooting has

taken over newspaper headlines and

TV programs in Puerto Rico, where the

retired boxer holds somewhat of a

rockstar status.

In the United States Camacho also

stayed in the limelight by participating

in "Mira Quien Baila," a Univision

show that resembles Dancing with the

Stars. Camacho also made several

appearances on the Univision show "El

Gordo y La Flaca".

According to Captain Reinaldo

Santiago, a detective with Bayamon

Police, Camacho and his friend,

Alberto Mojica, were parked in front

of a local store when an SUV with two

gunmen

Macho Camacho became the show's unofficial "Mira Quien Baila" critic.

Howser was born in Gallatin,

Tennessee. Howser received his first

name from a portmanteau of his par-

ents' names, Harold and Jewell, as

revealed in the California's Gold

episode "Smartsville". After serving in

the U.S. Marine Corps and on the staff

of Sen. Howard Baker, Howser began

his television career at WSM-TV in

Nashville. He began a series of "human

interest" stories for WSM.

After working in New York, he

moved to Los Angeles in 1981 to work

as a reporter for KCBS-TV. During

1982-83, he served as weekend host

and correspondent for Entertainment

Tonight. In 1985 he joined Los Angeles

television station KCET, then a PBS

affiliate, as a producer of Videolog,

covering short topics including lint

artist Slater Barron. among other topics

relevant to Los Angeles and adjacent

communities. On November 27, 2012,

the Sacramento Bee reported that

Howser was retiring from making new

shows. Howser died at home on the

morning of Monday, January 7, 2013,

of cancer, which he had been battling

for several years, at the age of 67.

E N O U G H I S E N O U G H !E N O U G H I S E N O U G H !We need Latinos To Play Latino Roles in Movies & on TV

By Kirk Whisler

While many

aspects of

Hollywood have

made major

changes in the

past two decades

in terms of providing roles in front and

behind the camera for Latinos, prob-

lems still exist. Hollywood has one tra-

dition that only seems to get worse

with the years: Allowing non-Latinos

to play Latinos in key roles.

I've been working far too many hours

lately with on political campaigns.

After victories for the propositions I

was working on November 6th my

wife, Magdalena and I went to see the

movie ARGO. The movie is very well

made: excellent script, great cast, mov-

ing story... At the end of the movie

they have individual cast photos next

to each individual cast member. The

producers have done a great job of get-

ting actors who like the real persons

they are portraying, except with one

role: the lead character of real life CIA

technical operations officer Tony

Mendez that is played by Ben Affleck.

Here's ten reasons this is wrong:

1. Talented Latino actors are over-

looked. Big budget films want lead

actors with name recognition. In 2012

it's fortunate there are dozens of

Latinos that have earned key entertain-

ment industry awards and have had

leads in high grossing films. For the

role of Tony Mendez couldn't the pro-

ducers have called an award winning

actor like Benicio del Toro, Jimmy

Smits, Edward James Olmos, Tony

Plana, Andy Garcia, or Esai Morales,

to name a few possible actors that

could have excelled in this role. SAG-

AFTRA, the Screen Actors Guild, has

over 6,000 Latino members for casting

directors to choose from so there is no

lack of Latinos to cast into roles.

2. Awards. ARGO will win many

movie industry awards in the coming

months, but none of these will go to a

Latino because NO Latino was cast in

the lead role. The same is true for

many of the other films listed in this

article.

3. Role Models. When Latinos are not

cast in these highly visible, POSITIVE

ROLES a MAJOR opportunity is lost

to provide meaningful Latino role

models. While Hollywood has NO

problem casting Latinos in negative

roles as gang members, drug users, and

maids they continue to have a problem

casting Latinos into highly professional

roles - even when it's real characters.

4. Successful films are viewed by mil-

lions and last for decades. Successful

films like Stand and Deliver have been

viewed by millions of people over the

past three decades and hundreds of

thousands of young Latinos have been

motivated to stay in school and go onto

college by the impressive and talented

Latinos in the cast. Would the film

have the same impact if Jaime

Escalante had been played by someone

other than Edward James Olmos?I sin-

cerely doubt it.

5. It's not just for Latinos. Films and

television are the most common ways

than many non-Latinos see the roles

that Latinos are playing or have played

within American society. When those

roles are played by non-Latinos

MAJOR OPPORTUNITIES ARE

LOST FOREEVER.

Going back to ARGO no one is

going to say the role played by Ben

Afflack is a great Latino role model -

and the movie will never show non-

Latinos the true Latino hero that

Mendez was.

6. It has happened before - and will

again. Please keep in mind that I have

no problems with any of these actors,

only when they are cast in roles that

should be going to Latinos. Here's a

few key examples of how this has been

happening for too many decades in

movies and television shows like:

released that went on to earn many

awards and generate hundreds of mil-

lions in revenues. A Beautiful Mind

was well received and yet most view-

ers had no idea at all that the lead char-

acter's wife to be, played by Jennifer

Connelly, was based upon the real life

Alicia Lopez-Harrison de Landé, born

in El Salvador. The character's ancestry

was completely white washed and for-

gotten. Result: Connelly got an

Academy Awards - the Latino commu-

nity got NOTHING.

7. Other communities would NOT tol-

erate this. In the 21st Century no stu-

dio or producer would dream of casting

in a real life drama a white actor as an

African American or Asian American -

just would not happen. Cries of

RACISM would be heard everywhere.

Why does it happen so often with

meaningful Latino roles?

THIS MUST STOP NOW.

8. Dozens of biopics or hundreds? In

Hollywood today we've seen more big

budget biopics funded about South

Africans than we have about Latinos

born in the USA. Over the past three

decades we've seen over a hundred

African American biopics filmed for

theatrical and television release. These

African American projects are wonder-

ful and the Southern African ones are

motivating - I just wonder when we'll

see a more realistic number of Latino

biopics.

9. Latinos Buy Movie Tickets. While

Latinos in the USA now represent 16%

of the USA, they purchase 22% of all

movie tickets at theaters - and repre-

sent 24% of all frequent movie goers.

10. If we truly want to change

America and offer accurate picture we

MUST DEMAND that Latinos play

Latino characters. While working in

1982 with my compadre Edward James

Olmos on the movie The Ballad of

Gregorio Cortez I learned first-hand

the enormous power film has over

audiences. As Eddie likes to point out

as the lights go down the involvement

and connection increases. Let's work to

make sure that the power of film is

correctly used. Compromises are no

longer acceptable.

I'm sure that many of you can come

up with equally important reasons why

MISCASTING is unacceptable - and I

sincerely hope that you'll share them

and other stories with me. Writing is

not my strongest skill - but I'm

extremely proud of the words that I've

put upon this paper. If you agree with

what I've shared here, please email me

at [email protected] with your

thoughts.

Actress, singer, and

composer Gina La

Piana stars on the

new TV Series, "Rock

in a Hard Place", by

Brett Ratner and

Huffington Post writer David Fagin.

She plays 'Prism', daughter of aging

Jewish punk rock star 'Lance "Lint"

Jones', played by Steven Weber.

Rosanna Arquette and Lesley Ann

Warren are also in the series.

I interviews Gina at my Studio in

Hollywood. Her smile and personality

I found very contagious. She had so

many thing to say and work to tell.

Gina's upcoming film roles include

'Stacey' in "Audrey" and 'Clea' in

"BG3: Play Kids". Her previous roles

'Gloria' in "Black Widow", 'Sophia' in

"30 Days to Die" from Lionsgate,

"Theresa" in "Meet Dave" with Eddie

Murphy, 'Sandra Lopez' in "Knockout",

and Tom Cruise's former girlfriend in

"Jerry Maguire". Gina also starred

opposite Sacha Baron Cohen in "Al G

Indahouse", his first working title film

before "Borat".

She has algo done lots of work for

TV and when I asked her if it was easy

to reach “the fame” that she now

enjoys, she said: “I work sohard to do

what I love to do and I deserve all of

it”. She is determined to continue

working and -of course- exploit her

youth. Something vital that she recog-

nized reings in Hollywood, and recom-

mends to all aspiring actor not to

accept “couch casting”.

Gina's Television credentials include

guest roles on the FOX Series "Bones",

"The Mentalist" and "Criminal Minds"

on CBS, "Everybody Hates Chris" on

UPN, Aaron Sorkin's "Studio 60 on the

Sunset Strip", and the original "Beverly

Hills 90210". She also makes recur-

ring appearances on "Days Of Our

Lives" as 'Gabby Ortiz'.

Her talents extend to composing as

well, having worked on major sound-

tracks for Avi Arad's production com-

pany, best known for owning Marvel

Comics. She scored two films for him,

"Tekken" and "Robosapien: Rebooted".

Gina also scored the soundtrack for

"Opposite Day".

Song writing is also in her repertoire,

with songs written for Walt Disney

Pictures' "Beverley Hills Chihuahua 2"

and the end title song for "Cinderella:

Part Two". Gina wrote and performed

two songs for the Fox 2000 "Ramona

and Beezus" (starring Selena Gomez).

While on "Studio 60 on the Sunset

Strip", Gina had the wonderful experi-

ence working alongside Matthew Perry

and performing two original songs, "I

Don't Want to Start Over" and "Fly

Away".

Gina's entertainment career began

when she signed a major label deal

with SONY in an all girl group called

"Carmen Jones". Later on she signed

with Columbia Records to be in anoth-

er all-girl group called "Movida". As a

mature artist, she pursued a solo album

with MCA alongside Randy Jackson.

Gina has released two albums, "On

top", an electropop album released in

Europe, and a self-titled pop rock

album released on iTunes.

Born in Brooklyn and raised in

Corona, California, Gina was raised by

her father, a brilliant guitarist and

vocalist. From the time she could walk,

she was already a "little performer",

raised on The Rolling Stones, Cat

Stevens, Journey and other legendary

bands. Another source for her per-

forming personality came from Lucille

Ball and "I Love Lucy", which became

a childhood fascination that inspires

her to this day. It was this eclectic mix

that motivated her to pursue a career in

acting. She received a scholarship to

attend the esteemed American

Academy of Dramatic Arts, where she

studied classical theater, film, and tele-

vision acting.

Gina resides in Los Angeles where

strives to combine her two favorite

passions; acting and music.

At the end of the interview, she sung

beautiful songs, together with her gui-

tarrist. Her songs were based in per-

sonal experiences, she said.

“I WORK SO HARD TO DO WHAT I LOVE TO DO AND I DESERVE ALL OF IT”

2013 NAMM Show Opens with Grand Plaza

Inauguration Festivities

by Greg Pawlak

The NAMM Show gathers

90,000 members of the music

product industry from around

the world to preview new product

debuts from more than 4000 of brands

across every category.

The opening of the 2013 NAMM

Show on January 24, 2013 marks not

only the start of the world's premier

gathering for the music instrument and

product industry, but also the debut of

the Anaheim Convention Center's new

outdoor venue, The Anaheim Grand

Plaza.

To make full use of the Grand Plaza,

NAMM has booked four jam-packed

days of live music, tributes, events and

networking opportunities in the new,

outdoor space.

Kevin Cranley, NAMM chairman of

the board and president of Willis Music

Company and the NAMM Executive

Committee welcomed attendees and

participate in ribbon cutting cere-

monies. Following the ribbon cutting,

the 1st Marine Division Band from

Camp Pendleton performed on the

plaza. The 50-piece band entered the

Anaheim Convention Center to march

through the aisles, serenading show-

goers with "The Star-Spangled Banner"

and other patriotic songs.

The NAMM Show's exciting opening

day continues with what has become

one of the most important industry tra-

ditions, the Annual Tribute, an event

honoring the leaders of the music-mak-

ing industry who have passed away in

the last year.

The show ended with it's traditional

surprise performance on the main stage

at the Hilton Hotel, and this year the

surprise guest was Stevie Wonder. An

amazing talent, incredible performer,

and somebody that any musician could

learn a thing or two from.

I am already looking forward to next

year!

MI BARRIO - MY BEEF !By Zen Casak

From now on, I will be writing

about what I see in my barrio,

mainly I will be watching the

behavior of my fellow homo sapiens.

The more I see them, the more I

believe now, that the monkey comes

from humans and not all the way

around.

About two times per month, I see

young people cleaning the sidewalks in

Sunset Boulevard at the corner where

my office is. Why? You may ask: Well,

merely because "lost young idiots"

think they still live in the jungle. They

use the sidewalks to urinate, defecate

and throw their trash around and start

hunting for food around the donut

place.

The young people that come and

clean the sidewalks of my barrio want

see the streets clean and without the

scents of these "lost idiots". I would

like to find out where these cleaning

young people come from, I think I

could donate couple of thousand dol-

lars for their cause, what do you think?

If you see them at work, you'll see

them actively cleaning using brooms,

shovels and what I admire the most, is

that they all work together and you can

see that they take this task seriously.

So, if you see them around your barrio

anytime, greet them and try to emulate

them, ok?

Another thing that really…really

bugs me! Is that when I walk west on

Sunset Blvd toward Western Avenue, I

see so much trash, “illegal aliens” are

begging for work around Home Depot;

they are hanging from fences… My

question is: Who is generating all that

trash at bus stops, trash cans? There are

no city cleaning trucks to do their jobs.

But you know who I see 24 hours a

day working and babysitting cars? Yes,

you guessed it! The Parking

Enforcement Hybrid Car. I'm not kid-

ding! I have seen them working after

midnight hour almost every day.

Next week I will tell you more about

my beloved Hollywood Town.
