� e Corpus Christi Festival of the Arts is just around the cor-ner.  � e Festival will take place this year from March 30-April 1, 2012, returning to Sherrill Park and the Art Center of Cor-pus Christi and expects to draw thousands of people to celebrate the arts on the beautiful Corpus Christi Bayfront.

Formed as a 501c3 corporation in 2010, the Corpus Christi Festi-val of the Arts is host to the largest free regional annual celebration of the arts, showcasing the art-works of many artists from across the United States, in addition to a bevy of wonderful performances in dance, voice and music, and independent cinema screenings.  � e festival’s signature attraction features the internationally recog-nized artists that create an Italian Street Painting in the courtyard area of the Art Center. Aside from the wide variety of music, voice and dance performances in a non-traditional venue, vari-ous artists will be onsite o� ering

demonstrations of sand sculptur-ing, wheel-throwing, hand build-ing, glazing of clay and � ring of Raku pottery. � e docent guided Public Art Tram Tours have been expanded, o� ering riders unique views of the Corpus Christi pub-lic art collection and local archi-tecture with additional historic information as they tour the up-town, downtown, s.e.a.town and bayfront areas of the city.

An Artist’s style and expres-sion captures that tantalizing mo-ment when art opens the heart and allows one to share some-thing special with the world. Expressed through the selected media they use, the creative work of artists will be showcased in two featured Exhibits for the 2012 Festival of the Arts. Prospectus and Entry form for both exhibits are available on the Festival of the Arts website www.ccfestivalarts.org. � e juried exhibits that will grace the walls of the Meadows and Kucera galleries of the Art Center of Corpus Christi from

March 30- April 10th are:

Artwork expressive in identity of self, a visual commentary relat-ing to art of introspective works.

Juror Amado Pena, Jr. will se-lect art entries for the being Hu-man exhibit. Mr. Pena, recipient of numerous Native American Artist of the Year awards and for decades, is one of the most recognized artists in the � eld of Southwest art. Communicating his vision of a land, its people and their art, Pena’s art is exhibited nationally and owned by collec-tors throughout this country as well as Mexico and China.

The Unsung Heroine

Artwork as a visual com-mentary relating to women’s roles and struggles in society. Art entries will be selected by Juror Melida Buentello-Olivo for � e Unsung Heroine exhibit. Ms.Buentello-Olivo is an inde-pendent curator, art educator,

� lm art director and graphic de-signer. She is interested in social, cultural and gender issues and how these ongoing concerns can be interpreted in art through me-dia that spans from traditional to the digital sphere.

Recognition for BEST of SHOW for being HUMAN and � e Unsung Heroine exhibits will be announced during the Open-ing Ceremony and Artists Recep-tion on March 30th.

� e popular art-full KidZone, an undeniable favorite of those 12 years old and under, will feature a multitude of art activities for the youth of the community. � is year, HEBuddy will be joining the youth in this special creative art-space.

Sherrill Park and the Art Cen-ter Courtyard will be teeming with original one of a kind art and sales. � ese art works are of re-gional, state and national artists, selected from many categories such as: Mixed Media 2D; Mixed Media 3D, Ceramics; Fiber; Glass; Graphics/ Print Making; Jewelry; Painting; Photography/Digital Art; Sculpture; and lastly Wood-work. � at’s a lot of art! Artists interested in vending their art during the Festival of the Arts can � nd information as to how they may do so by visiting the BE IN-VOLVED page on www.ccfestiva-larts.org.

ArtWalk starts at 9:30am with the � rst of two Tram tours (the 2nd is at 11am) of the Downtown Public Art Collection. � ese tours are a collaborative e� ort between � e CCDMD, � e CC Festival of the Arts, and the Texas Commis-sion on the Arts which consists of a 50 minute docent guided tour of Art, Architecture, and Culture throughout the Bayfront, Down-town, S.E.A.Town, and Uptown areas starting from La Retama

ArtWalk kicks o� “Corpus Christi First”, a campaign aimed at attracting visitors to Corpus Christi the � rst weekend of ev-ery month, followed by Marina Market Days on the � rst Saturday and the BridgeWalk on the � rst Sunday. (www.corpuschristi� rst.com)

ArtWalk has steadily gained popularity and regularly attracts 5000 visitors to the Downtown area. Over 70 downtown busi-nesses are now participating in ArtWalk and o� ering a variety of entertainment, performers, ART,

refreshments, specials and dis-counts.

ArtWalk begins and ends in La Retama Park where visitors will � nd artists and food vendors, live music and an all around fes-tive atmosphere. La Retama Park is located at the triangle between Mesquite, Peoples and Schatzell Streets.

Live music can be heard all over downtown during ArtWalk by entertainers such as Brad Brown & Sam Glynn, Adrian Tay-lor, Joe Green, Get O� the Lawn, Steven James, Jimmy Wilden, Steven Hansen, and of course, HOBO on the tram.

ArtWalk now extends from the museum and convention center through Downtown to the Water Street Village where Tango Tea Room is located. To get to the outer reaches of ArtWalk, just catch the #79 ArtWalk Express, this free trolley service is gra-ciously provided by � e Regional Transit Authority that transports ArtWalkers to areas like the mu-seums, Yachting Center and the Art Center of Corpus Christi. � e Art Museum of South Tex-as, Asian Cultures Museum and

Museum of Science and History all o� er free admission during ArtWalk.

2012 marks the 40th anniver-sary of the Art Museum of South Texas. To celebrate, specially se-lected works from the permanent collection are displayed in Cele-brating 40 Years on the Bayfront. Another notable exhibition is Art of the Dive: Portraits of the Deep, which features 62 paintings and sculptors who portray under-water life forms and habitat such as Al Barnes and Guy Harvey. In addition, the movie Slacker 2011 will be shown in the Art Museum Auditorium at 7 p.m on February 3rd. � e movie is an homage to 20 years of independent � lmmak-ing in Austin. Filmmakers Justin Meeks and Duane Graves will at-tend the screening and participate in a discussion with the audience a ̄erwards.

In February, K Space Contem-porary will open two exhibits: Goodwill by Claudia Quintero in the Art Star space and Notes to St. Peter in the Hot Spot Gallery by father and son Ricardo Ruiz and Ricardo V. Ruiz. Ricardo the Elder will be conducting a

live painting performance during ArtWalk. Continuing in the main gallery is Constructed Realities, featuring the concrete sculpture and woven works of Lesli Robert-son and a large-scale installation by Joshua Goode.

In March, K Space Contempo-rary opens another stellar show of new works by Dennis Olsen, a professor of printmaking, draw-ing, and digital media at the Uni-versity of Texas at San Antonio. Becky Smith will exhibit her as-semblage sculptures in the Art Star space, while Diana Byers ex-hibits cyanotypes in the Hot Spot.

� e Art Center of Corpus Christi opens the 39th Annual All Membership Show in Febru-ary. � is year’s juror is Ken Rosier, Chair of the Del Mar College De-partment of Art and Drama. In March, three shows will open: � e Annual Watercolor Society of South Texas members show, Bay Area Art League, and Kathryn Leeson-Kight will present por-traits of the 2011 Rockport Home Tour.

While visiting Art-Walk venues, be sure to pick up ra ́ e tickets at selected ArtWalk locations – details on “� e Map”. Take the tickets back to La Re-tama Park by 8:45 and put them in the ra ́ e drum for a chance to win some great prizes. � e drawing will be held at 9 pm. Prizes include gi ̄ certi� -cates, door prizes, and the grand prize – an original work of art by a local artist. Art-Walkers must be pres-ent to win.

� e DTown Tramcontinues to transport ArtWalkers to cen-trally located venues in the heart of down-town with HOBO aboard to entertain

the crowds playing their special blend of “Honkadelica”. Take the RTA #79 ArtWalk Express trolley to the farther areas of ArtWalk like the Art Museum and Water Street Village. � e RTA ArtWalk Express Trolley provides a 30 minute service whilst the DTown Tram connects at La Retama Park every 15 minutes.

In collaboration with Sesame Street Live, the Corpus Christi Museum of Science & History will hold a coloring contest for free vouch-ers to Elmo Live. � e contest will begin February 4th and end February 16th. Children can color and draw Elmo and his friends. Four lucky winners will receive a free voucher to an Elmo show. Children can pick-up their entry coloring sheet at the museum. � e museum will announce the winners during their special Elmo Saturday on February 18th at 11:30 a.m. Elmo Saturday will feature Elmo’s favorite music, an Elmo cra ̄ and game and will begin at 11:00 a.m. Please make plans to join us for Elmo Saturday.
