Dear Readers,

Whether it’s drama, music, film, fashion or sports, April’s schedule of events has wide-reaching appeal. The Middle East Film and Comic Con is back, and promises to be bigger and better than ever. There are also film festivals, fashion shows, garden parties, polo competitions, and so much more.

We also have some different experiences on offer this month, most notably the Al Marmoom Heritage Festival, which provides a great opportunity for visitors to watch camels race to the finish line at the Al Marmoom Camel Racetrack. This festival brings the camel racing season to a close and presents a unique chance to join in with locals, as they cheer on their beloved ships of the desert.

Don’t miss the stunning Cavalia performance at the Dubai World Trade Centre. This dramatic show, brought to you by the masterminds behind Cirque du Soleil, sees horses interact with dancers, aerialists, acrobats and musicians in a mind-blowing theatrical performance.

Meanwhile, on the other side of town, we are all set to go on a wonderful adventure to the Emerald City, when The Wizard of Oz is performed live on stage at the Madinat Theatre – a fun-filled musical treat for all. And, for anyone who’s up for partying All Night Long, head down to Dubai Media City Amphitheatre and join American musician, Lionel Richie.

Enjoy a great month and don’t forget to share all of the action with us on Dubai Calendar’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using #DubaiLiveIt and #MyDubai.

COMIC TIMINGCelebrate the best of pop culture with like-minded people and celebrity A-listers.

What: Middle east FilM and CoMiC Con 2014When: april 3-5 Where: dubai international Convention and exhibition Centre

he Middle East Film and Comic Con (MEFCC) is the largest popular culture festival in the region and has grown to become one of the highlights on Dubai’s social calendar. Imagine a place that offers fans of film, TV, comics, manga, animation, collectibles and pop art three days of plentiful attractions and celebrity sightings, and you will understand what all of the hype is about.

This year’s MEFCC is not different. Festival goers will have the opportunity to see exclusive previews, take part in exciting competitions and activities, buy limited-edition merchandise and connect with thousands of other like-minded fans. However, that’s not all; Hollywood star Seth Green of Austin Powers and Family Guy fame, along with Scottish actor

RIZWAN FAROOQ,EVENTS OPERATION MANAGERI stood in line for the first MEFCC in 2012 and have sworn my allegiance to it ever since. I’m even hoping to make it to next year’s main event in San Diego and strike that off my bucket list.

This year, the venue is bigger, so I expect a better exhibitor and activity layout. There have been many highlights over the years; Jason Momoa at the first one was top draw. Panel discussions are interesting and guest-speaker interactions are well managed.

Sylvester McCoy, who played Doctor Who in the ’80s, are just a few A-listers who are expected to attend.

Moreover, MEFCC 2014 has been moved to a new home, the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre at the Dubai World Trade Centre, offering plenty of space for all of the attractions, such as the main Con room, gaming arena – where you can preview some of the hottest upcoming games – panel discussions and workshops with the stars, the Artists Alley – where you can discover local artists, collectors and entrepreneurs – and so much more.

However, it’s the MEFCC’s Cosplay competition that everyone is looking forward to, where hundreds will dress up as their favourite superhero, sci-fi idol or fantasy crush. So, what are you waiting for? Decide on your outfit and get into character.

TAREK MONZER,CARTOON NETWORK ANIMATION ACADEMY STUDENT I like attending the MEFCC because it’s one big gathering for people like me – film and comic aficionados, aka geeks. There’s no other comparable event in town, such as this, where there’s so much to do with like-minded people. The atmosphere is great and inviting, and everyone just belongs there.

This year, I’m looking forward to a little bit of everything; the line-up of celebrity guests is great; listening to them sharing their stories during the Q&As is always fun. Cosplayers will be roaming the halls and it’s always a sight to see just how much effort people put into their costumes.

reated by one of the founders of Cirque du Soliel, Normand Latourelle, Cavalia celebrates the beauty and brawn of horses and humans by fusing equestrian and performing arts with multimedia and special effects.

Often labelled as equestrian ballet, Cavalia has been revamped especially for Dubai audiences, so expect new acts, costumes and projections by the magnificent troupe, which comprises more than 40 horses representing 12 breeds and 30-plus performers, including riders, aerialists, acrobats, dancers and musicians from all over the world.

C

KING OF CAVALIA Cavalia’s creator and artistic director, Normand Latourelle, was a pioneer of Cirque du Soleil from 1985 to 1990 and has been involved in many impressive events in Canada, such as the 350th

anniversary celebration for the founding of Montreal, and the sound and light show on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. With more than 40 years’ experience in performing arts, he continues to instil talent, passion and imagination into his productions.

13

12-DCR26-ENG-Cavalia.indd 13 3/25/14 3:06 PM

A stunning and moving theatrical ode to the relationship between man and horse throughout history, Cavalia is fitting for Dubai, as the UAE boasts a rich equestrian heritage.

Experience horses and humans in all their glory at the Dubai World Trade Centre, under the gleaming White Big Top, the second-largest touring tent in the world, with a capacity to accommodate up to 2,000 spectators.

If you’re looking to attend one-of-a-kind events in Dubai this month, put Cavalia at the top of your list. Its shows, which integrate acrobatics, live music and equestrian arts in a fairy tale setting, are bound to have you on the edge of your seat in anticipation.

When: aPriL 30 tO May 4Where: Dubai WOrLD traDe Centre

TOMP, a unique and inventive percussion group from the UK, returns to Dubai after seven years, with a fresher, faster and funnier routine.

With a range of household and junkyard items, such as broomsticks, matchboxes and garbage cans moonlighting as instruments, the troupe creates energising beats that combine music and dance for a full-blown theatrical performance.

What started out as a street busking group has now grown into a worldwide sensation, having performed in more than 53 countries and won multiple awards, including the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Choreography and a New York Obie Award.

For this year’s shows, STOMP packs a punch of epic acrobatic displays and toe-tapping beats, promising to be bigger, better and louder than ever.
