    Tesfalidet. Everything was perfect on

the road and it is good to have a rstand second place for Eritrea.

Another notable performance at an eventthat continues to raise the bar in terms

of records and personal bests came fromBritish wheelchair competitor Rob Smith. The

Englishman is a regular visitor to Dubai and

he returned to the UK with the WheelchairOpen gold medal and a new British record of

2h:06m:45s for the T52 Wheelchair Class. It was very hard work especially with the

condensation building up on the wheels,

which meant it was extremely difcult tograb and push the wheels, said Smith.

My arms are aching but Im absolutelydelighted to have broken the British record

in the class and set a new personal best.

On hand to present the trophies werespecial guest His Highness Sheikh Khalid

Bin Hamed Al Khalifa, Vice President ofthe Bahrain Olympic Committee as well as

Mattar Al Tayer, Vice President of the DubaiSports Council; Jonathan Morris, Standard

Chartered CEO UAE; and Ahmed Al Kamali,

President of the UAE Athletics Federation. The 2013 Standard Chartered Dubai

Marathon was supported by the DubaiSports Council, Adidas, Dubai Eye 103.8FM,

JW Marriott Marquis, Emaar, Sport 360,

Drinks and Drinks StationsDehydration is the biggest problem that marathonrunners have to overcome. In a hard race on a hot

and humid day, up to four litres of uid can be lost

through sweating and exhalation. It is important forrunners to keep well hydrated. It should also be noted

that overhydration can also be an issue. It is just asimportant for runners not to overhydrate reducing

sodium levels.Isotonic drinks supplied by Gatorade will be availab

at six stations. Full bottles will be provided at the 10km

15km, 20km, 25km, 30km and 35km stations.Water supplied by Masa Water will be available at

every 2.5km starting from 5km with the last drinksavailable at 40km and the nish. Around 100,000 500m

plastic bottles of water have been supplied to meet th

needs of the marathon. In addition to water, many of the elite runners prefe

to drink their own special drinks during the race. Thespecial bottles are collected on Thursday night and

kept in secure and cool conditions overnight. On raceday they are taken to the appropriate 5km points. At t

5km points, eight in all, there will be four numbered

(1-4) tables allocated between the various elite athletfrom which they will take their special drink bottles.

    Markos Geneti (Ethiopia)

    Born: 30 May, 1984

    Marathon Best: 2:04:54

    (3rd Dubai, 2012)

    Career Notes

He played his part in the Ethiopian

dominance in the 2012 edition of the

    Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon

    beating the Kenyan Jonathan Maiyo

by two seconds to claim third place.

That was over two and a half minutes

improvement on his best time, set

in winning the Los Angeles title in

2011. He gave early notice of his

talent, winning a silver medal at the

    2002 World Junior Championships at

5,000m and that followed the World

Youth title for 3,000m the previous year.

The track career continued, taking ina bronze medal over 3,000m at the

    2004 World Indoor Championships in

Budapest. Given the strength of the

Ethiopians on the track, a move to the

road was logical, though hardly likely to

nd the competition any easier among

fellow East Africans. In April 2013 he

    tackled the tough Boston Marathon

course and nished sixth in 2:12:44.

    Jonathan Maiyo(Kenya)

    Born:5 May, 1988

    Marathon Best: 2:04:56

    (4th Dubai, 2012)

    Career Notes

    The breakthrough to truly world-

class with his performance in Dubai

in 2012 was the culmination of solid

    progression from track to road.

Chasing an Ethiopian trio, headed by

    the eventual champion Ayale Abshero,

to the nish line improved his personal

best by almost eight minutes. From his

debut at the distance in Rotterdam in

    2010, nishing 11th in 2:12:45, he had

most denitely arrived on the scene.

He retained enough speed in his legs

for a silver medal in the 5,000m at the

African Championships in Benin sixmonths later.

    Solid track credentials of 13:22.89

for 5,000m, achieved in the nal of

    those African Championships, reect

a runner who can now challenge for

honours in any marathon. His best

at half marathon is 59:02 for second

place in the City-Pier-City race in

The Hague in March 2012. His last

marathon was almost a year ago when

he ran 2:10:18 for 10th in Tokyo on

    February 24, 2013.

    Laban Korir (Kenya)

    Born: 30 December, 1985

    Marathon Best: 2:06:05

    (2nd Amsterdam, 2011)

    Career Notes

    Korir, who rightly describes his

    marathon debut as the best

achievement of his career so far,

went to number three on the all-time

charts for debutants when he nished

second in Amsterdam in 2011. His has

been a natural transition on the road,

concentrating on 10km and the half

    marathon for his rst international

appearances since 2008. Going into the

Amsterdam race with a half marathon

best of 61:03 for sixth in the Berlin

Half Marathon earlier in 2011, he was

primed for a good performance yetthe marathon can be a cruel teacher

Korir passed the test with high credit.

He has run two marathons since,

    experiencing Boston and tough

weather conditions in 2012 to nish

sixth in 2:15:29. Five months later

he clocked 2:09:52 in Chicago for

11th place. Having been to the fore

in the rst half, he then dropped

off the pace but Korir has shown

himself a good student of this

    demanding discipline so far.

    Abrhe Asefa (Ethiopia)

    Year of Birth: 1988

    Marathon Best: 2:09:00

    (1st Rennes/FRA, 2013)

    Career Notes

Abrhe Asefa ran outside Africa for the

rst time in 2011. It was his marathon

debut, but the Ethiopian had to be

content with a time of 2:20:54 in San

Sebastian in Spain at the beginning

    of November. However, this was

still good enough for second place.

It took nearly two years before he

    returned to European road racing.

    At half marathon, his personal

best is a modest 62:37 yet he has

    made signicant improvements

    in the marathon. Last November

he won the Rennes title in 2:09:00and a considerable improvement

could be on the cards given Dubais

    usually ideal conditions. Since the

victory in France hes had three

months to prepare so Dubai will

be a test of his recovery abilities.

    Deiiba Merga(Ethiopia)

    Born: 26 October, 1982

    Marathon Best: 2:06:38

    (6th London, 2008)

    Career Notes

    Merga followed the familiar route

    of aspiring Ethiopian runners when

he left home in Welega province in

2005 and settled in the capital, Addis

Ababa, to further his career. His results

    conrmed that here was another

outstanding talent: fourth in the World

    Half Marathon Championships in

2007, he made his marathon debut

the same year in Fukuoka, nishing

second to the late, great Sammy

    Wanjiru of Kenya in 2:06:50.

    The following year came

his outstanding championshipperformance so far, yet, at the same

    time, his greatest disappointment: on

course for the bronze medal in the

    Beijing Olympic Marathon, he was

    passed by compatriot Tsegaye Kebede

over the nal 400m in the Birds Nest

    stadium. Apart from that Olympic

    fourth place, his most prestigious

    performance has been winning

the Boston Marathon in 2:08:41 in

April 2009. In 2013 he twice ran the

    marathon, nishing down the eld

in Boston in 2:21:40 and then third

in Istanbul in 2:14:43 in November.

    Megersa Bacha Chikuala (Ethiopia)

    Born: 18 January 1985

    Marathon Best: 2:06:56

    (4th Paris, 2013

    Career Notes

Chikuala arrives in Dubai having set a

personal best in his last performance

at the marathon: 2:06:56 for fourth

place in Paris on April 7, 2013.That

    marked an improvement of two

minutes over his previous best, set

in nishing third in Turin in 2011. He

can also be relied upon for exciting

racing and tight nishes: the Kenyan

Joseph Kiptum had to out-dip him

on the nish line to win the Hannover

title in May 2012 where Bacha ran

    another solid time of 2:09:56.

Completing the set of fourmarathons so far in his career,

he ran 2:20:11 to nish fourth in

    Istanbul in November 2012.

    Shume Dechase Leche(Ethiopia)

    Born: 28 May, 1989

    Marathon Best: 2:07:11

    (2nd Seoul, 2013)

    Career Notes

Leches rst foray into Asia in terms

    of the marathon was rewarded

with a personal best of 2:07:11 for

second place in the Dong-A event

in Seoul on March 17 last year.

The South Korean race was a

very different setting to his previous

outing when the Ethiopian ran 2:07:56

to nish fourth in Hamburg almost

a year before. From the Hanseatic

city in Germany in April, he switched

to Amsterdam in October 2012 but

nished outside the top ten in 2:13:50.

Apart from his ne run in Seoul in2013, he also has the distinction of

making his marathon debut at Kosice

in Slovakia, the oldest race at the

distance in Europe, established in 1924.

His name went on the honours board

for 2009 with second place in 2:11:36.

    Atsedu Tsegay(Ethiopia)

    Born: 17 December, 1991

    Debutant

    Career Notes

    Atsedu Tsegay could well become

    the next Ethiopian marathon runner

who manages to reach a world-class

level in Dubai. There have been two

    spectacular debut winners from

Ethiopia in this race in the past two

    editions. Will this series continue

and could it be Tsegay who does it?

There are some indications that he

might indeed be up to it. The 22 year-

old has shown very promising form

some weeks ago: In mid December

he won the New Delhi Half Marathon,

which featured a superb elite eld.Tsegay clocked 59:12 minutes and

broke the course record by three

    seconds. The Ethiopian showed

that he has fully recovered from an

ankle injury which kept him out of

competition for almost a year. His

    half marathon PB suggests high

potential, having run 58:47 in Prague

in 2012, not only a course record but

    also deposed Haile Gebrselassie

    as the Ethiopian record holder.

    Girmay Birhanu Gebru (Ethiopia)

    Born: 22 November, 1986

    Marathon Best: 2:06:04

    (2nd Amsterdam, 2013)

    Career Notes

    Girmay Birhanu Gebru made

    remarkable progress to nish runner-

up in the Amsterdam Marathon in

    October last year, chopping over

six minutes off his personal best as

    only Kenyas Wilson Chebet denied

him victory in the Netherlands. The

    previous performances of the athlete

who has concentrated on the road

    were less spectacular affairs.

His last experience of the marathon

    before the revelation in Amsterdam

was in winning the 2012 Grandmas

Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota in2:12:25 so the development from that

    American road race to Amsterdam

and what he might achieve in Dubai

is fascinating. He made his marathon

debut in Casablanca in 2009, nishing

fth in 2:15:57. One victory in eleven

    marathons suggested the portfolio of

a journeyman, but that all changed

    with his performance in Amsterdam

    last autumn. Gebrus current standing

makes him a real contender for the

    podium in Dubai.

    Berhane Adere(Ethiopia)

    Born:23 November, 1973

    Marathon Best: 2:20:42

    (1st Chicago, 2006)

    Career Notes

Berhane Adere is a former Standard

    Chartered Dubai Marathon Champion,

having won the race in 2008 with

2:22:42. Her racing has been less

frequent in the past two years but,

having turned 40 in November, she

is now in the veterans or masters

category. If her chances of outright

victory are not what they once were, a

new eld of endeavour has opened for

her, challenging for a world record -

the current masters record for women

stands at 2:24:54 by Irina Mikitenko of

Germany, set in Berlin last September.Adere has enjoyed a long career of

    success. She was World Champion

at the half marathon (2002) and the

    10,000m (2003) and collected a series

    of medals at global championships.

    While she broke world indoor

records at 3,000 and 5,000m she also

    established an Ethiopian marathon

record in 2006, winning in Chicago with

2:20:42 and again the following year.

    Meselech Melkamu (Ethiopia)

    Born: 27 April, 1985

    Marathon Best: 2:21:01

    (1st Frankfurt, 2012)

    Career Notes

    Meselech Melkamu had a superb

    marathon debut when she won

Frankfurt in 2012 with a course record

of 2:21:01. This was the third fastest

marathon debut ever by a woman. But

on the other hand such a performance

wasnt such a surprise since Melkamu

has excelled at long distances on the

track. She is the second fastest ever

at 10,000m with 29:53.80 and African

    record holder.

In future I want to reach times

in the marathon that are as good

as the results I achieved in the10,000 metres, said Melkamu.

After Frankfurt she ran the London

Marathon in 2013, where she nished

fth in 2:25:46. She was then selected

for the World Championships when, in

hot weather conditions in Moscow, she

was in the leading group until the nal

stages of the race, but then dropped

    out because of stomach problems.

    Meseret Hailu Debele(Ethiopia)

    Born: 12 September, 1990

    Marathon Best: 2:21:09

    (1st Amsterdam, 2012)

    Career Notes

She enjoyed the nest two weeks of

her career so far in October 2012 - a

    fortnight after becoming a surprise

winner of the World Half Marathon

title in Kavarna in Bulgaria, Meseret

    won the Amsterdam Marathon,

breaking the course record by almost a

minute. Her time of 2:21:09 was also a

personal best by almost six minutes.

She took to road racing when still in

her teens and made her debut at the

marathon with 2:45:10 in the North

Korean capital of Pyongyang in 2010.

Breaking the Ethiopian record for thehalf marathon with 66:56 for fourth

place at Ras Al Khaimah in 2013 was

followed by second place at the Boston

Marathon that year in 2:26:58. Selected

    for the World Championship marathon

last year, she dropped out in the torrid

heat of Moscow. She showed solid

form at the New Delhi Half Marathon

in December, nishing fourth in 69:05.

    Mulu Seboka (Ethiopia)

    Born:25 September 1984

    Marathon Best: 2:23:43

    (2nd Daegu/KOR, 2013)

    Career Notes

    Mulu Seboka has been running

    international marathons and shorter

road races for the past decade yet

it took time for her to achieve top

class at the marathon. After a 2:43:30

debut back in 2003 in Pyongyang she

broke 2:30 in 2008. First she missed

this target by ve seconds, when

she won the Mumbai Marathon in

January 2008 (2:30:04) but later in

the year she won again, this time

    clocking 2:29:06 in Toronto.

    The Standard Chartered Dubai

Marathon in 2012 marked a majoradvance as she improved to 2:25:45,

nishing 11th. In 2013 she improved

again, this time chopping off almost

    two minutes from her personal

best, nishing second in Daegu with

2:23:43. On the fast Dubai course

her aim will be to further improve.

    Sultan Haydar (Turkey)

    Born: 23 May, 1987

    Marathon Best: 2:25:09

    (2nd Paris, 2012)

    Career Notes

Sultan Haydar began as a middle

    distance track runner winning the

    2009 European Under-23 title in

2009. Then came the switch to the

    road in 2011. The Ethiopian-born

    athlete, who became a Turkish

citizen in 2008, ran the prestigious

Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon and

nished seventh in 70:02. The same

year she made her marathon debut:

    2:35:06 for seventh in Istanbul.

    An impressive improvement

followed as she took almost ten

minutes off that time to takesecond in 2:25:09 in Paris. For good

measure, that was and remains the

Turkish record. So far she has been

    disappointing in championships,

nishing well down the eld in the

    London Olympic Marathon and

failing to nish the 2013 World

    Championship race. Consistency has

been the watchword in the big city

races and she was third in 2:29:40

in Istanbul in November last year.

Nine weeks later, Dubai awaits her.

    Wude Ayalew (Ethiopia)

    Born: 4 July, 1987

    Marathon Best: N/A

    Career Notes

She has achieved a number of

ne results at 10,000m and Cross

    Country during her international

career, which began in 2006. The

Ethiopian, who grew up in a farmers

    family with seven siblings, has

now turned to the marathon. She

made her debut in Dubai last year

but failed to nish, having been

    among the leaders at halfway.

She has excellent speed, always a

    signicant factor for the marathon.

As for track honours, she won

a bronze medal in the 2009 WorldChampionship 10,000m. In the 2013

track season she had improved to

an impressive 30:11.87. In the highly

    competitive World Cross Country

    Championships Ayalew has twice

nished fth (2006 and 2009). On the

road, she has a 10k best of 31:07,

    equalling the Ethiopian record in

2010. Her biggest win in road racing

so far has been New Delhi in 2012,

where she took the half marathon

title with 71:10. Her personal best at

this distance stands at 67:58, set in

nishing second in New Delhi in 2009.

    Mamitu Daska (Ethiopia)

    Born: 16 October, 1983

    Marathon Best: 2:21:59

    (1st Frankfurt, 2011)

    Career Notes

The Dubai champion of 2010 returns

and should pose a threat to any rival.

She won the Dubai title with 2:24:18 but

the bare gures do not do justice to the

drama. Daska had to dig deep to beat

fellow Ethiopian Aberu Shewaye in the

home straight. Once across the nish

line, she lay down for several minutes

before summoning up the energy to

rise again. Her marathon debut was

less spectacular in its outcome but

    showed what denite potential: third

place in the 2009 Berlin Marathon with

2:26:38. The year following her Dubaitriumph marked her greatest success

so far, winning the Houston title in

January 2011 and then setting what

remains her personal best of 2:21:59

in Frankfurt in October. Her second

    appearance in Dubai brought ninth

place in 2:24:24 in 2012. In 2013 she

ran two marathons, nishing 12th in

Boston in April and 4th in Frankfurt,

    nishing the latter in 2:23:23.

    Firehiwot Dado (Ethiopia)

    Born:9 January, 1984

    Marathon Best: 2:23:15

    (1st New York, 2011)

    Career Notes

    She fullled many a marathon

runners dream when she won New

York in 2011. The Ethiopian ran 2:23:15

to improve her personal best by almost

one minute on a course regarded

as difcult. She has only nished a

marathon once (14th in New York in

2013) since taking fourth place in the

2012 Boston race on a particularly

warm day but Dubai should provide a

setting for a return to her best.

Apart from her triumph in New

    York, Firehiwot Dado has enjoyed

great success in the Rome Marathon, winning on three consecutive

    occasions from 2009. About to

    complete her hat-trick, she removed

her shoes and ran the last 200 metres

barefoot in tribute to compatriot Abebe

Bikila, who won the mens Olympic title

    in 1960, running shoe-less throughout.

Perhaps another incentive was that the

race organiser also offered a bonus to

the winner who emulated Bikilas feat,

at least for the last 200 metres.
