Dubai is one of the seven emirates of the United ArabEmirates (UAE). It is located south of the Persian Gulf on theArabian Peninsula and has the largest population with the second-largest land territory by area of all the emirates, after Abu Dhabi.Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the only two emirates to have veto power

over critical matters of national importance in the country'slegislature. Dubai is situated on the Persian Gulf coast of theUnited Arab Emirates and is roughly at sea level(16 m/52 ft above). The emirate of Dubai shares borders with Abu Dhabi in thesouth, Sharjah in the northeast, and the Sultanate of Oman in thesoutheast. Hatta, a minor exclave of the emirate, is surrounded on

three sides by Oman and by the emirates ofAjman (in the west)and Ras Al Khaimah (in the north). The Persian Gulf borders thewestern coast of the emirate. Dubai is positioned at 25.2697N55.3095E and covers an area of 4,114 km (1,588 mi), which representsa significant expansion beyond its initial 1,500 mi designation dueto land reclamation from the sea.

The UAE culture mainly revolves around the religion ofIslam and traditional Arab, and Bedouin culture. In contrast,the city of Dubai is a highly cosmopolitan society with a diverseand vibrant culture. The influence of Islamic and Arab cultureon its architecture, music, attire, cuisine and lifestyle are veryprominent as well. Five times every day, Muslims are called to

prayer from the minarets of mosques which are scatteredaround the country. Since 2006, the weekend has been Friday-Saturday, as a compromise between Friday's holiness to Muslimsand the Western weekend of Saturday-Sunday.

According to the census conducted by the StatisticsCentre of Dubai, the population of the emirate was 1,771,000 asof 2009, which included 1,370,000 males and 401,000females. The region covers 497.1 square miles (1,287.4 km). Thepopulation density is 408.18/km more than eight times that ofthe entire country. Dubai is the second most expensive city inthe region, and 20th most expensive city in the world.

As of 2005, 17% of the population of theemirate was made up of UAE nationals.Approximately 85% of the expatriate population (and71% of the emirate's total population) was Asian,chiefly Indian (51%), Pakistani (16%),Bangladeshi (9%)

and Filipino (3%).A quarter of the population howeverreportedly traces their origins to Iran. In addition,16% of the population (or 288,000 persons) living incollective labour accommodation were not identified

by ethnicity or nationality, but were thought to beprimarily Asian. The median age in the emirate wasabout 27 years. The crude birth rate, as of 2005, was13.6%, while the crude death rate was about 1%.

The Islamic dress code is not compulsory, unlike in neighboringSaudiArabia. Most Emirati males prefer to wear a kandura, an ankle-lengthwhite shirt woven from wool or cotton, and most Emirati women wearan abaya, a black over-garment covering most parts of the body. Thisattire is particularly well-suited for the UAE's hot and dry climate.

Western-style clothing is, however, dominant because of the largeexpatriate population, and this practice is beginning to grow inpopularity among Emiratis.

Etiquette is an important aspect of UAE culture and tradition, towhich visitors are expected to conform. Recently, many expatriates

have disregarded the law and been arrested for indecent clothing, orlack thereof, at beaches. Western-style dress is tolerated in appropriate

places, such as bars or clubs, but the UAE has maintained a strictpolicy of protecting highly public spaces from cultural insensitivity.

Article 7 of the UAE's Provisional Constitution declares Islam theofficial state religion of the UAE. The government subsidizes almost 95% ofmosques and employs all Imams; approximately 5% of mosques are entirelyprivate, and several large mosques have large private endowments. Five timesevery day, Muslims are called to prayer from the minarets of mosqueswhich are scattered around the country. Since 2006, the weekend has

Dubai also has large Christian, Hindu, Bah', Sikh, Buddhist, andother religious communities residing in the city. Non-Muslim groups can own

their own houses of worship, where they can practice their religion freely, byrequesting a land grant and permission to build a compound. Groups that do

not have their own buildings must use the facilities of other religiousorganizations or worship in private homes. Non-Muslim religious groups arepermitted to openly advertise group functions; however, proselytizing ordistributing religious literature is strictly prohibited under penalty ofcriminal prosecution, imprisonment, and deportation for engaging in behavioroffensive to Islam.

Dubai's government operates within theframework of a constitutional monarchy, and has

been ruled by the Al Maktoum family since 1833. The current ruler, Mohammed bin Rashid AlMaktoum, is also the Vice President and PrimeMinister of the United Arab Emirates and memberof the Supreme Council of the Union (SCU).Dubai appoints eight members in two-term periods to the Federal National Council (FNC) of theUAE, the supreme federal legislative body.

Dubai is a lucrative destination for investment for anumber of reasons. Its world-class infrastructure along with a

safe living and facilitated business environments make it an idealplace to live and work. Its contribution to civilization is mostlyon its infrastructure.

Burj Dubai is the tallest tower in the world on the basisof all four criteria, listed by the Council on Tall Buildings and

Urban Habitat. The council measures the height until the top ofthe structure, the height up to the highest occupied floor, theheight until the roof, and till the tip of the antenna, flag pole orthe mast. Burj Dubai took just 1276 days to be known as the tallest building in the world.

During the process of construction, Burj Dubaiovertook the skyscrapers that were previously known as thetallest architecture around the world, such as the Empire State Building in New York with 381 m, the Jin Mao Building at

Shanghai with 421m, the Sears Tower of Chicago (442 meters),and the Petronas Towers of Malaysia (452 meters). Burj Dubai isnot only an architectural and engineering masterpiece inconcrete, steel and glass. It is a human achievement that cannotbe equaled. Burj Dubai will surely inspire the future generationsto think and look beyond the ordinary and to challenge their

mind and spirit. On eighth world congress in Dubai next year,Burj Dubai will be use as a case study to point out to whatextent. The modern-day structures are pushing boundaries.

Although Arabic is the official language, English is the linguafranca of the city and is very widely spoken by residents. Urdu, Persian,Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Tagalog, Chinese, Malayalam, and other languages

are spoken in Dubai by its many foreign residents.
