Ducab is the premier cable manufacturer in the United Arab Emirates and, since 979, has been meeting the

Ducabiscommittedtosupplyingitscustomerswiththehighestqualityofproductandofservice.DucabsPowercables
havebeentypeapprovedbyLloydsRegisteroftheUKandhaveundergonerigoroustypetestingbyBASEC(British
ApprovalsService forCables).They fullyconformtoBS6004andBS5467specifications for
PVCandXLPE insulatedcables respectively, forelectricitysupply,up toand including3.3kV
ratings.
Inaddition,DucabwaspresentedwiththeDubaiQualityAward994,forthebestlocalindustrial

Specifyingtherightcableforaparticularapplicationisthefirststep.Thekeytoreliabilityhowever,isinthemanufacturing

(a) Screening:CoppertapeorAluminiumPEtape(alongwithtinnedcopperdrainwire)canbeusedfor
shieldingpurposes.
(b) Tinnedcopperwirecanbeusedalongwithgalvanisedroundsteelwirestomaintainspecifiedarmour
conductivityrequirements.
(c) Reducedpropagatingflameretardantbedding(RPLHCL/RP)andoutersheathmaterialcanbeofferedto
meetreducedflamepropagationcharacteristicsandlowhydrogenacidgasemission.
(d) CablewithbeddingandoutersheathmaterialofspecialLSF(lowsmokeandfume)compoundcanbe
offeredforinstallationswherefireanditsassociatedproblems-theemissionofsmokeandtoxicfumes-

(e) Inwaterloggedareasorwherethecablesarerequiredtobeabrasionresistant,cablewithmediumdensity

(5). Fire.test.requirement
CablessheathedwithgeneralpurposePVCType9meetfiretestrequirementofIEC60332-.Cableswith
varyingfireperformancerequirementsaremanufacturedbyDucab.Thedetailsonthisareprovidedonrequest.

Whicheverformofconductorisused,XLPEinsulatedcablesaresimpletohandle,installandjoint.Allthecables
describedinthispublicationcanbeusedindoorsoroutdoors,butsomereservationsarenecessaryconcerning
cablesfordirectburialinthegroundorforuseinsustainedwetconditionsasfollows:
(i) Unarmouredcablesarenotgenerallyrecommendedforlayingdirectlyintheground.
(ii) Cableslaiddirectlyintheground,particularlyinsustainedwetconditions,shouldhaveextrudedbedding
andpreferablyMDPE-MediumDensityPolyethylene-astheoutersheathmaterial.
Otherimportantfactorstobetakenintoaccountare:

Careshouldbetakentoensurethattheoversheathisnotdamagedduringinstallation.Thisisespeciallyimportantwhere
aluminiumwirearmourisused,asingressofmoisturecouldleadtocorrosionorultimatelossofearthcontinuity.

CONNECTORS
The use of compression type connectors is recommended for XLPE insulated cables since the use of soldered
connectors would limit the maximum short circuit temperature of the cable to 160C (and consequently reduce the final
short circuit current by approximately 30%).
OVERHEAD.TERmINATIONS
Ultra violet resistant sleeving or taping should be provided on XLPE insulated cores to avoid degradation due to
exposuretosolarrays.
ARmOURED.SINGLE.CORE.CABLES.FOR.AC.OPERATION
Thecurrentratingprovidedforsinglecorecablesisbasedonarmourbonded/earthedatbothends.Armourbonding
atbothendsresultsincirculatingcurrentinthearmour.
Higher current ratingmay be achieved in case the armour is bonded / earthed at single end. However single end
bondingresultsinaninducedvoltageattheunearthedendofthearmour.Themagnitudeofinducedvoltageisdirectly
proportional to thecurrent through theconductorand lengthof thecable.At times themagitudeof inducedvoltage
couldposepotentialriskifnolimitingdeviceisconnectedattheopenend.Forthispurposesheathvoltagelimitersare
inuse.
Ducabstronglyrecommendsuseofaninsulatedadopterinthecablegland,whileterminatingsinglecorecablesforAC
operation.
SinglecorecablesforACoperationshouldnotpassthroughsteelconduitorsteelglandplate,asitproducesaheating
effect.

AsperIEEWiringRegulationswherethecableisnotcontinuouslysupporteditshallbesupportedbysuitablemeansat
appropriateintervalsinsuchamannerthatthecabledoesnotsufferdamagebyitsownweight.

WiringRegulations.
Alltheratingsgivenareforsinglecircuitsinstalledthermallyindependentofothercircuitsoranyotherheatsourceand
onthebasisofthestandardconditionsofinstallationgiveninrelevantTablesbetween7to33.Forotherambientor
groundtemperatures,depthoflaying,soilthermalresistivity,theratingmustbemultipliedbyrelevantratingfactorsin
Tables2to6and8to2.
ItshouldbenotedthatifXLPEinsulatedcables,aresubjectedtooperatingtemperaturesappreciablyhigherthanthe
90C permissible for continuous operation, the insulation will undergo premature ageing thus affecting the normal life
of the cable. However, limiting maximum conductor temperature to 105C during overloads with duration not exceeding
4hoursonanyoneoccasion,oramaximumof00hoursinany2consecutivemonths,oratotalof500hoursinthe
cableslifetime,wouldbetenable.
IEE.WIRING.REGULATIONS.-.REQUIREmENT.FOR.CABLESTheIEEWiringRegulations for installationandselectionofcablescannotbeapproached in isolation fromtheother
equipment in the installation. In particular the devices providing protection against overload, short circuit, shock by
indirectcontactandover-heatingofprotectiveconductorsduringanearthfault,affecttheselectionofcables.
CROSS.SECTIONAL.AREAS.OF.PROTECTIVE.CONDUCTORS.(Clause.543.of.the.16th.Edition.of.IEE.Wiring.Regulations)
Regulation543explainshowthecrosssectionalareaofthecircuitprotectiveconductorshouldbecalculatedtoavoid
itover-heatingduringafault toearth.Againthearearequireddependsonthecharacteristicsofthedeviceproviding
protectionagainstshortcircuit.
ThesteelwirearmourofstandardcablestoBS5467(XLPE)andBS6346(PVC)providestherequiredarea,ormore,
whentheprotectivedeviceisoneofthestandardfusesorMCBswitharatingnothigherthanthecurrentratingofthe
cable(assumingdisconnectionwithin5seconds).
Forthemostofthecablesthearmourisstilladequatewhenthefuseratingisoneortwosteps,orevenmore,above
thecurrentratingofthecable,themarginsbeinggreaterforthesmallsizesand4corecablesthanforthelargersizes
andtwocorecables.

Voltagedropisnormallyonlyof importanceforcablesofvoltagerating600/000Vorbelow.Iftheinstallationistobe
incompliancewithRegulation 525 of the 6thEdition of the IEEWiringRegulations, it is stipulated that the voltage
dropwithintheinstallationdoesnotexceedavalueappropriatetothesafefunctioningoftheassociatedequipmentin
normalservice.Therequirementisdeemedtobesatisfiedifthedropinvoltagefromtheoriginoftheinstallation(usually
supplyterminals)andthefixedcurrentusingequipmentdoesnotexceed4percentofthenominalvoltageofthesupply,
disregardingstartingconditions.
(Note:Diversitycanbetakenintoaccountwhencalculatingvoltagedrop).
Sincetheactualpowerfactoroftheloadisoftennotknown,themostpracticalapproachtothequestionofvoltagedrop
istoassumetheworstconditionsi.e.wherethephaseangleoftheloadisequaltothatofthecable.Thevoltagedrop
valuesinthetableshavebeenbasedonthisassumption.Forconductorsizesuptoandincluding20mm2thefigures

providedapplywithsufficientaccuracywhere thepower factor liesbetween0.6 laggingand.0,and for largecables
wherethepowerfactoroftheloaddoesnotexceed0.8lagging.Wherethephaseanglesoftheloadsfalloutsidethis
range, thevoltagedropdeduced from the tablesmaybeundulyconservativeandmoreexactmethodsofcalculation
shouldbeemployed.
Thevaluesofvoltagedropfor600/000Vratedcablesaregiveninthecurrentratingtables.
In thosecaseswhere theactualcurrentdiffersgreatly fromthe tabulatedcurrent rating, theresultsobtained fromthe
tablesareonlyapproximate;foramoreaccurateassessment,allowanceshouldbemadeforthechangeinconductor
resistancewithoperatingtemperature.Refertopage35andTable3fordetails.Itshouldalsobeensuredthatthecable
sizeultimatelyselectediscapableofcarryingtherequiredcurrentunderthesiteconditionsofinstallation.
