• Why should Ventilation Systems be cleaned?
There is growing concern over the quality of the air we breathe, and for most of us that means a long period of time breathing air supplied to us through air conditioning systems. If you inspect any air conditioning system after three or four years you will invariably find debris somewhere in the system. It may just be a light dust build-up but it is there, and the air that you breathe passes through or over it. Add to this the worst situation of vermin decaying in the ductwork and then the added incidence of damp, and you will have the perfect scenario for the war of bacteria. Yeasts and fungi will grow and multiply and you will breathe it in. All these situations can arise over years by natural neglect i.e. filters wrongly specified or size changed, frequently missing vermin screens from intakes, badly maintained fan units causing vibration and noise, natural degradation of insulation material (used internally on some ducts) and certainly in acoustic silencers allow excess fibres to migrate into the system. All of this is just the supply system. We are frequently asked why bother we don't notice it. The legal answer comes under COSHH regulations, Euro directives and the Health and Safety Executive. It is your responsibility to ensure the health and safety of your occupiers whether workers, visitors or tenants. The simplest answer though is probably this, if I was to take a greasy plate then remove some debris from the duct and place it on the plate, then put your breakfast i.e. bacon, eggs etc. on it, would you eat it ? The answer of course would be "NO", yet every day you are quite content to breathe (or eat) the air that has passed over the same debris in the ductwork all through the year. By the same token you would not drink water supplied through a drainpipe, because you see the dirt. Every time you look at that dirty grille or diffuser, remember you are breathing in that excess dirt and you needn't! All this is just the supply side. We all carry debris with us into the building, fibres from our clothes, minute flecks of paper from our working material, dead skin that we shed all day, and many other types of contamination just in your ordinary office.

• The Effects of Neglected Ventilation Systems
This Chart shows some of the problems bacteria and viruses
associated with air conditioning systems
Whilst it is possible for the list below to be found in systems in harmful quantities it is in fact rare. However regular cleaning and sanitising will prevent this

• Scope of Works & Observations
To internally clean the Existing Ventilation Duct Systems in accordance with the B&ES (Building & Engineering Services Association) formally known as the HVCA (Heating & Ventilation Contractors Association) Guide to Good Practice – Cleanliness of Ventilation Systems document TR/19, at the location of Dendron Ltd, Warehouse Air Supply Duct System Deep Cleaning and Testing. As per your requirements and brief of the system, the scope of deep cleaning required was for the existing ventilation duct systems for the warehouse. The scope of works included the air ventilation ductwork, commencing from the point where the horizontal ductwork will be separated from the vertical rising duct that lead from the top of the AHU. This was also just prior to an attenuator at the ceiling level. The deep clean continued through the entire main duct trunk and the four branches feeding off the main trunk, and terminating at the end of the Jet Nozzles. The ductwork required the installation of a number of access panels to be installed, to facilitate the cleaning process. These were fitted to the spiral duct at various points to assist in the cleaning equipment to be inserted and will allow us to clean the ductwork as thoroughly as possible. The access doors were supplied and installed in accordance with B&ES TR/19 guidelines.
Methodology The Ventilation Systems were cleaned using both air moving equipment and where it was necessary, localised vacuuming by hand, to remove all physical debris from within; Volume Control Dampers were blasted with compressed air to remove debris that may be clogging the system and then cleaned by hand. The deposits on the internal surface of the ductwork were agitated using motorised rotating brushes which were then captured by a high volume air moving unit. Access panels were installed by hand using an electric drill to initiate a starting point for electric nibblers to cut out the section of duct that the access panel will replace. The method for the deep clean of the air supply system also included a process of chemically Fogging the duct system following the cleaning process. Following this and upon completion of the clean, Swab Samples and/or V.T samples were taken.
