May 3, 2020 Fourth Sunday of Easter
Dear Parish Family, Since 1964, the Fourth Sunday of Easter has been designated as “Vocation Sunday.” St. Pope Paul VI instituted this “World Day of Prayer for Vocations” on this particular Sunday of the Easter Season because in each year of the three-year Lectionary cycle, the Gospel reading invites us to reflect on different aspects of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd, who lays down his life for his sheep; who risks his own life for them; who goes searching for the one that is lost; and who desires that they all be of one fold, is a wonderful image of what it means to respond to Christ’s call and build up the kingdom of God here on earth. As St. Pope Paul prayed in 1964: “O Jesus, divine Shepherd of the Spirit, you have called the Apostles in order to make them fishermen of men, you still attract to you burning spirits and generous young people, in order to render them your followers and ministers to us.”
On this day, the Church concentrates its attention to the ordained ministries (priesthood and diaconate), to the Religious life in all its forms (male and female, contemplative and apostolic), to societies of apostolic life, to secular institutes in their diversity of services and membership, and to the missionary life. We pray that God may give young men and women the gift of understanding to discern their service to the Church as priests, deacons, or consecrated religious, and for the gift of courage to follow his call. Truly, without priests, there is no Eucharist, our sustenance, strength, and presence of Christ with us. At the same time, we pray that all members of the Body of Christ may know the personal love of God for them, and to respond with generous hearts. Each of us has a specific call from God. Whom do we follow and to whose voice do we listen? Jesus calls himself the Good Shepherd, and it is his sheep that hear his voice and follow his lead. It is in him that we “might have life and have it more abundantly.” This is the heart of Easter – to share in the new life, the glorified life, the risen-from-the-dead life of Jesus Christ. Does that excite you? Does that energize you? If not, why not?! This resurrection life is not something just for the future, something to know and experience only once we’re dead. Eternal life is now! Having been baptized in the waters of rebirth, we receive the Spirit of God that Jesus breathed on his disciples following his resurrection. The same Spirit that empowered his followers to proclaim him as Lord and Christ dwells within each of us as well. Knowing this and acknowledging this helps us to realize the abundant life that we have been given. Of course, it’s important for us to cooperate with this Spirit of Christ within us. Do we strive to come to know Christ in every area of our lives? Do we nourish this life – this relationship – through prayer and meditation, and especially, through the Eucharist? His call may in fact lead some to an ordained or vowed way of life, but it also leads others to sacramental marriage, to being parents, or even to the single way of life. All who are baptized are called to spread the love and compassion of Christ. All who are baptized are called to be Christ for all others. I encourage you to pray and reflect on your own particular vocation this day, here and now. To what are you called in building up the kingdom of God? What is God asking of you today to share Christ with others? How might your response be expressed? While you consider your unique call from God, please also pray for more young men and women to respond to Christ’s call to the priesthood and consecrated life. God bless you, always, and in all ways.

The Visit People in need of assistance who live within the St. Vincent de Paul parish boundary are eligible to receive a visit from two Vincentian (members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul) caseworkers. At the visits, caseworkers listen with compassion and mercy to the situation presented by our neighbors. The caseworkers share a list of community resources including food pantries and other agencies that can help address their needs. After the visit, the Vincentian caseworkers consider the financial request for rent, utilities or other items and determine the best way to financially assist this neighbor. The assistance is based
on their individual need and the Society’s availability of funds. Our visits always end with a prayer that is sometimes led by our neighbor. For more information about the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at
our parish, please contact Janie Alonzo at 979-777-3737 or [email protected].

Abortion and COVID-19 Update:
On 4/13/2020 “…the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals issued an order allowing the performance of drug-induced abortions in the 15 abortion facilities that sued Governor Greg Abbott over his Executive Order GA 09 calling for all medical providers, not just abortion providers, to delay non-emergency surgeries and medical procedures until April 22. The Court's order does not apply to the 10 abortion facilities who are not plaintiffs, meaning those facilities must continue to follow the Executive Order.” To read further information as well as a response from Texas Alliance for Life please see our parish website.
A Prayer for Pregnant Mothers O Blessed Mother, you received the good news of the incarnation of Christ, your Son, with faith and trust. Grant your protection to all pregnant mothers facing difficulties. Guide us as we strive to make our parish communities places of welcome and assistance for mothers in need. Help us become instruments of God’s love and compassion. Mary, Mother of the Church, graciously help us build a culture of life and a civilization of love, together with all people of good will, to the praise and glory of God, the Creator and lover of life.* Amen.

Have you been thinking about becoming a Roman Catholic?
Perhaps you have been attending Mass with your family or friends and just never “got around to it”. Maybe you aren’t quite sure if you are ready to take this step and want to know more about the Catholic faith before making a commitment. You might have been raised as a Catholic but never had all of your Sacraments of Initiation — Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. Then you may be ready for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). If you have children over the age of 7 who have not received their sacraments, we have an RCIA process adapted for children, too! Anyone interested in learning about the Catholic faith or inquiring about initiation in the Church is invited to call the Parish Office at 512-255-1389.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING CORNER
On this Sunday, our Risen Lord is recognized as the good shepherd who
protects us and cares for us. Being the recipients of God’s care, we need
to realize that Peter’s words to the people of Jerusalem are addressed to
us as well – we too must reform and embrace a new way of living if we
wish to be a part of Christ’s fold. That new way of life is to bring God’s
care and mercy to the poor, the vulnerable, the forgotten and abandoned
through our relationships with them.
