History of Duffield House
Duffield House was built in the late 1860’s. The first occupier wasWilliam Cooper, a tenant of the Penn family who were descendants of the founder of Pennsylvania. In 1869 Edward Coleman bought theland, having succeeded the Penns as Lord of the Manor of StokePoges. Ownership passed to Algernon Gilliatt in 1872, he wasChurch Warden of St Giles, Stoke Poges – the Church associatedwith Gray’s Elegy. The room now called the Display Room was thenthe family chapel. There were several owners after Gilliatt each ofwhom continued to extend and modify the building. During WorldWar II the house was requisitioned as a military administrativeheadquarters and in 1947 ICI brought the house to provide amanagement centre for staff and visitors of ICI Paints. DuffieldHouse is now AkzoNobel’s in-house Conference Centre.
