Richmond took advantage of anearly turnover to claim a 3-0 lead. TheBlue Devils fumbled on their secondsnap from scrimmage and RichmondLB Anthony Dabney returned the ball25 yards to the Duke nine yard line.After three plays netted six yards,Howard booted a 20-yard field goal.

The Spiders increased their leadto 10-0 by driving 75 yards in nineplays for a 16-yard touchdown passfrom QB Eric Ward to WR ArmanShields with 10:40 remaining in thesecond period. The drive washighlighted by a 23-yard run by RB Tim Hightower and a 21-yard strike fromWard to WR Matt Hale.

Duke had a scoring opportunity thwarted late in the first half when RichmondLB Adam Goloboski blocked a 43-yard field goal attempt.

Howard’s 22-yard field goal with just over one minute left in the third quartercapped an 18-play, 83-yard drive that took 9:09 off the clock, giving the Spiders a13-0 lead.

Duke would have possession inside the Richmond five yard line on twooccassions in the final period, but failed to score.

Ward finished the night with 11 completions in 23 attempts for 120 yards whileShields caught five balls for 69 yards. Hightower carried the ball 20 times for 86yards.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. —Wake Forest RB Micah Andrewsscored the game-winning touchdownwith 1:28 left in the game as theDemon Deacons defeated Duke, 14-13,at Groves Stadium.

In his first start, Duke rookie QBThaddeus Lewis completed 21-of-32passes for 305 yards and onetouchdown to pace the Blue Devils.The 305 passing yards marked themost by a Blue Devil quarterback in astarting debut since Dave Brownthrew for 444 yards against WakeForest in 1989.

The two-yard scoring plunge byAndrews and K Sam Swank’s extrapoint put the Demon Deacons ahead,14-13, with 1:28 remaining in the fourthperiod. Lewis then directed the BlueDevils down the field, with his 21-yardpass completion to WR Jomar Wrightsetting up first down and goal to gofrom the nine yard line with nine seconds left. One play later, Wake Forest blockeda potential game-winning field goal attempt by K Joe Surgan to preserve thevictory.

Duke took advantage of a Demon Deacon turnover to claim a 3-0 lead in theopening quarter when LB Codey Lowe recovered a fumble caused by CB JohnTalley to give the Blue Devils possession in Wake Forest territory. Surgan’s 27-yard field goal at the 3:19 mark capped the nine-play, 24-yard scoring drive.

With just under five minutes before halftime, Lewis hooked up with Wright ona 47-yard touchdown pass down the left sideline to push the Duke lead to 10-0.The Blue Devils drove 66 yards on four snaps for the score following a missed 51-yard field goal by Wake Forest.

Wake Forest got on the scoreboard at the 9:08 mark of the third quarter whenQB Riley Skinner fired a five-yard touchdown pass to TE John Tereshinski,cutting the Duke lead to 10-7. Duke responded by taking the ensuing kickoff anddriving 46 yards on 11 plays for a 39-yard field goal by Surgan. BLACKSBURG, Va. —Fourteenth-ranked Virginia Tech used316 passing yards and a punt return fora score to defeat visiting Duke, 36-0,as 66,223 fans looked on at LaneStadium in Blacksburg, Va.

Virginia Tech took the openingkickoff and drove 65 yards on fourplays to claim a 6-0 lead on RBBranden Ore’s one-yard touchdownrun. Hokie QB Sean Glennon hookedup WR David Clowney for a 60-yardcompletion on the first snap fromscrimmage. Duke’s Casey Cameroblocked the PAT attempt, marking thefourth blocked kick of his career.

The Hokies extended their lead to13-0 when Eddie Royal returned apunt 58 yards for a touchdown with 39seconds remaining in the first quarter.Brandon Pace booted a 42-yard fieldgoal at the 11:02 mark of the secondquarter, capping a seven play, 37-yarddrive to give Virginia Tech a 16-0 lead.

Glennon’s 17-yard scoring strike to TE Sam Wheeler pushed the lead to 23-0 with just under three minutes before halftime.

At the 7:17 mark of the third quarter, Glennon hooked up with WR JoshMorgan on a 25-yard touchdown pass for a 30-0 Tech lead. DURHAM, N.C. — Virginiaspoiled Duke’s 2006 edition ofHomecoming by defeating the BlueDevils, 37-0, at Wallace Wade Stadiumon Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliersscored on each of their first threeoffensive possessions and added adefensive touchdown in the thirdquarter.

Virginia got on the scoreboard justover three minutes into the first quarterwhen WR Emmanuel Byers tossed a21-yard touchdown pass to fellowwideout Fontel Mines. The drive wasset up by a 22-yard punt return byMike Brown. After stopping Duke onfourth down and one yard to go at theBlue Devils’ 29 yard line, theCavaliers went ahead 10-0 on a 31-yard field goal by K Chris Gould.

A blocked punt by Virginia’sJosh Zidenberg led to a one-yardrushing touchdown by RB JasonSnelling with 6:07 remaining in the opening period. Just prior to halftime, theCavaliers took advantage of Duke’s third turnover when DE Jeffrey Fitzgeraldscooped up a fumble and darted 23 yards for a touchdown, sending the teams tointermission with a 24-0 Virginia lead.

Fitzgerald intercepted a Duke pass deep in Blue Devil territory on the finalplay of the third quarter, setting up a 12-yard scoring strike from QB JameelSewell to TE Tom Santi. RB Mikell Simpson’s two-yard touchdown run with28 seconds left accounted for the final margin.

Duke QB Thaddeus Lewis completed 11-of-25 passes for 121 yards butsuffered the first three interceptions of his young career. Marcus Jones andRaphael Chestnut each had four receptions for 42 and 34 yards, respectively.After missing two straight games due to injury, Ronnie Drummer returned to thefield, rushing three times for four yards and catching one pass for 12 yards.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. —Alabama RB Kenneth Darby rushedfor 115 yards and QB John ParkerWilson passed for 220 yards and twotouchdowns to lead the Crimson Tideto a 30-14 win as 92,138 fans lookedon at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Alabama took the opening kickoffand marched 61 yards on seven playsfor a 37-yard field goal by K JamieChristensen with 10:39 left in theopening quarter. On third down andgoal, Duke’s Codey Lowe sackedWilson to force the field goal attempt.

On its second offensivepossession, Duke drove deep intoAlabama territory, but the Blue Devilslost a fumble on second down and goalfrom the Crimson Tide two yard line.The drive was keyed by LeonWright’s 22-yard punt return as wellas a 21-yard scamper by RBRe’quan Boyette.

Duke then held Alabama and tookover at the Crimson Tide 39 yard line following a punt. Three plays netted nineyards, and, after two Duke timeouts, Ronnie Drummer rushed for four yards onfourth down and two from the 30 yard line. The fourth down conversion paiddividends for the Blue Devils as QB Thaddeus Lewis later found WR Eron Rileyfor a nine-yard touchdown pass and K Joe Surgan’s PAT gave Duke a 7-3 leadwith 12:21 remaining in the second quarter.

The Crimson Tide responded by driving 90 yards on 11 plays and Wilsonhooked up with WR D.J. Hall on a four-yard touchdown pass to make the score10-7 with 5:33 left before halftime. Duke countered by taking the ensuing kickoff andmarching 74 yards on six plays and Lewis silenced the crowd by scoring on theground from five yards out. The drive was highlighted by a 33-yard run fromscrimmage by Boyette and a 35-yard pass from Lewis to Riley.

Taking advantage of a turnover, Alabama went 40 yards on nine plays to takea 16-14 lead when Wilson found WR Keith Brown on a nine-yard scoring strike atthe 9:23 mark of the third quarter. Duke’s Casey Camero blocked the PAT attemptto keep the advantage at two points.

Alabama pushed its lead to 23-14 at the 4:08 mark of the final period whenRB Jimmy Johns scored from two yards out, and Lionel Mitchell accounted forthe final margin less than one minute later with a 50-yard interception return for atouchdown.

Florida State took a 7-0 lead lessthan three minutes into the game whenLawrence Timmons scooped up afumble and returned it 36 yards for atouchdown.

At the 6:09 mark of the firstperiod, Weatherford tossed a nine-yardscoring strike to WR De’Cody Fagg topush the lead to 14-0. The three-play,eight-yard scoring drive was set up bya 51-yard punt return by Chris Davis.

The Seminoles pushed their leadto 21-0 with 23 seconds left in the firstquarter when Weatherford and WRGreg Carr hooked up on a 33-yardtouchdown pass to cap a six-play, 72-yard scoring drive.

DURHAM, N.C. — Miami QBKyle Wright threw for 299 yards andtwo touchdowns and the Hurricaneswithstood a fourth quarter rally by Duketo post a 20-15 win over the BlueDevils at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Duke drove 83 yards to the sixyard line on its final possession with achance to win, but Miami’s WillieCooper spoiled the opportunity with aninterception on the final snap.

Wright directed the Miami offenseeffectively all day, doing most of hisdamage through the air. He ended thegame 24-of-41 for 299 yards and twotouchdowns, both to WR SamShields. Sophomore S KennyPhillips also tied a Miami schoolrecord by intercepting three passes.

Duke made the Hurricanes veryuncomfortable in the fourth quarter aftera 14-play, 80-yard scoring drive thattook 5:14 culminated in an 11-yardscoring pass from QB ThaddeusLewis to WR Raphael Chestnut. The extra point changed the score to 20-9 infavor of Miami. After a three and out defensive stand, Duke took over at the Miami32 with 8:58 remaining. RB Re’quan Boyette, weaving left, ended the drive witha seven-yard touchdown run with 7:06 left in the game. The two-point conversionfailed, but the Blue Devils pulled within a score at 20-15.

Duke’s defense, which limited Miami to 30 rushing yards on 26 carries, heldagain and gave its offense a 52-yard field and an opportunity with 6:17 showing onthe clock. The two teams traded possessions and the Hurricanes pinned the BlueDevils to their own 11 with 1:35 left. Led by Lewis, who had 284 passing yards onthe day, Duke drove to the Miami six-yard line before the game ended on aninterception by Cooper as time expired.

The Hurricanes opened the scoring with a three-play, 41-yard drive followingan interception on Duke’s first possession of the game. Wright finished the drivewith an 18-yard touchdown pass to Shields with 12:29 remaining in the first quarter.

That score stood until Miami went on a 12-play, 73-yard scoring march to goup 10-0 with 12:32 remaining in the second quarter. The drive was capped off by a21-yard field goal by K Jon Peattie.

With 7:40 left in the second quarter, the Blue Devils started at their own two-yard line. After a four-yard gain on first down, Lewis connected on a 54-yard passto WR Jomar Wright in Duke’s longest play from scrimmage in 2006. Thepromising drive stopped when Wright fumbled after he had enough yards to converta fourth-and-one at the Miami 31-yard line. Miami LB Lovon Ponder returned thefumble 43 yards to set the Hurricanes up with outstanding field position at the Duke38. Miami took advantage of the miscue, driving 38 yards in four plays forWright’s second scoring pass to Shields, a 26-yarder with 2:52 left in the first half.

After stopping the Hurricanes’ first drive, Duke struck first in the second halfafter Miami P Darren Daly kicked the ball out of the back of the end zone after anerrant snap. The ruling was an illegal kick, resulting in a safety for the Blue Devilsto make the score 17-2 with 13:19 left in the third quarter.

Vanderbilt took the opening kickoffand drove 76 yards on 11 plays for anine-yard touchdown run by Nickson.The Commodores kept the drive aliveby converting a fourth down and twosituation from the Duke 43 yard linewhen Nickson hooked up with BryantAnderson for a 16-yard gain.

The Commodores then puttogether a five-play, 97-yard scoringdrive that resulted in a 77-yardtouchdown pass from Nickson to EarlBennett. Bryan Hahnfeldt’s pointafter conversion with 3:12 left in theopening period made the score 14-0.

Nickson extended the lead to 21-0 on Vanderbilt’s third possession,finding the end zone from five yards outon the ground to cap a six-play, 59-yard drive. Following a turnover,Nickson’s 41-yard touchdown strike to George Smith pushed the Commodoresahead by a 28-0 count at the 6:22 mark of the second quarter.

Duke’s Vincent Rey recovered a fumble on Vanderbilt’s next possession,and Boyle’s third scoring run coupled with Re’quan Boyette’s two-pointconversion pulled the Blue Devils within 38-22 at the 7:21 mark of the fourth period.

After Alex Williams recovered an onside kick to give Duke possession,Boyle darted 32 yards for his fourth touchdown of the game. Boyette was stoppedshort on the two-point conversion attempt to make the score 38-28 with sevenminutes left. Boyle’s four-touchdown effort matches the school single-game recordheld by five others. Robert Baldwin was the last Blue Devil to accomplish thefeat with four scores against Maryland in 1994.

Vanderbilt countered with a touchdown as Nickson scored on a one-yard runat the 4:07 mark and teammate D.J. Moore added an interception with under twominutes remaining to help seal the victory.

Ryan’s second touchdown toss of the evening covered one yard to TE JohnLoyte and gave the Eagles a 14-7 lead with 31 seconds left in the second quarter.The scoring drive covered 60 yards on nine snaps and lasted 3:13. Following aninterception that gave Boston College possession at the Duke 29 yard line with 10seconds remaining in the half, Ryan threw a deep ball into the end zone intendedfor WR Tony Gonzalez that was broken up by CB John Talley. Following aDuke offsides penalty, Eagle K Steve Aponavicius attempted a 42-yard field goalthat was short.

Early in the third quarter, Talley’s ACC-leading sixth interception of theseason set up a scoring chance for the Blue Devils in Boston College territory, butDuke was stopped short on fourth down from the three yard line. The Eagles thendrove 97 yards in 12 plays for a 26-yard touchdown run by RB Andre Callender,pushing Boston College’s lead to 21-7 with 5:34 remaining in the third period.

Whitworth scored on a seven-yard run with 13:42 left in the final quarter tomake the score 28-7 in favor of the Eagles. The scoring drive lasted seven playsand went 62 yards in 3:08.

Duke QB Thaddeus Lewis completed 20-of-40 passes for 131 yards on thenight. The top receiving target was WR Raphael Chestnut, who had five catchesfor 46 yards. LB Jeramy Edwards and DE Patrick Bailey led the Duke defensewith a team-high 10 tackles.

For Boston College, Ryan – the ACC’s top passer – finished with 23completions in 37 attempts for 219 yards with two touchdowns and one intercep-tion. Both Whitworth (120 yards) and Callender (108 yards) topped the 100-yardbarrier.

ATLANTA, Ga. — Georgia TechQB Reggie Ball threw for 122 yardsand three touchdowns to lead the 18th-ranked Yellow Jackets to a 49-21 winover Duke in front of 46,768 fans atBobby Dodd Stadium.

On the game’s opening snap fromscrimmage, Duke CB John Talleyintercepted a Ball pass to give the BlueDevils possession at the Georgia Tech19 yard line. Duke was unable tocapitalize, however, missing a 27-yardfield goal attempt. The interceptionmarked Talley’s ACC-leading seventhof the year and the 18th of his career.

On their next possession, theYellow Jackets marched 80 yards onsix plays and RB Tashard Choice’sthree-yard touchdown run with 9:50 leftin the opening period gave GeorgiaTech the early lead.

Following a Duke turnover,Georgia Tech used a 10 play, 67-yarddrive to take a 14-0 lead when Ballfound WR Calvin Johnson in the endzone on third down and goal from the Blue Devil 10 yard line. Johnson’s ACC-leading 12th touchdown catch of the year came on the first play of the secondquarter.

With 5:51 remaining in the second period, Ball hooked up with WR JamesJohnson on a 37-yard scoring pass to push Georgia Tech ahead, 21-0. GeorgiaTech then forced a fumble, and the Yellow Jacket offense went 26 yards in twoplays for a 19-yard scoring pass from Ball to Calvin Johnson, extending the leadto 28-0 at the 4:52 mark of the quarter.

The Blue Devils then took the ensuing possession and put together a fiveplay, 82-yard scoring drive that resulted in a 13-yard pass from QB ThaddeusLewis to FB Tielor Robinson. The drive was highlighted by WR RaphaelChestnut’s three receptions for 46 yards.

Georgia Tech scored on its first possession of the second half, driving 53yards in three plays for a 20-yard touchdown pass from QB Taylor Bennett toWR Greg Smith. The Blue Devils took advantage of a turnover by turning SSAdrian Aye-Darko’s first career interception into a 47-yard scoring pass fromLewis to WR Eron Riley. The touchdown came at the 6:42 mark of the third periodand cut the Tech lead to 35-14.

With 2:04 remaining in the third quarter, Bennett found Smith for a touchdowncovering 25 yards in the air to make the score 42-14. The scoring drive, whichcovered 26 yards in two plays, was set up by a Yellow Jacket interception. Justover four minutes into the fourth period, RB Ronnie Drummer scored on a 23-yard run to cap a six play, 95-yard drive for the Blue Devils. A 43-yard pass fromLewis to Riley spearheaded the drive.

RB Jamaal Evans had a 21-yard scoring run to account for the final margin.Lewis completed 19 passes in 32 attempts on the afternoon for 237 yards

with two touchdowns and one interception. Chestnut hauled in a team-best eightpasses for 81 yards. LB Codey Lowe led Duke defensively with a game-higheight tackles.
