November2017HikeInMapleBayNovember2nddawnedgrey,withalightdrizzle.LeighHirstcalledtofindoutifthehikewassSllon.Iwassurprisedbecauseit'snotlikeLeightobeputoffbyaliklerain.Hewas,however,askingbecauseitwasrainingheavilyinMillBay.IsuggestedthatwemeetattheGlenoraTrailheadParkanddecidewhattodothen.OnthewaytotheParkIfoundmyselfdrivingthroughatorrenSaldownpourofBiblicalproporSons.Itwasalarming.IenvisagedourfirstevercancellaSon.But,whenIgottotheParktherainhadstoppedandtherewereevenSnypatchesofbluesky.Onlyfivehikersturnedup.EveryoneelseseemedtohaveforgokenaboutthelegendofreasonablehikingweatheronthefirstThursdayofthemonth.Wedecidedthattheweatherwouldholdforafewhoursanddulysetoff.WewalkeddowntoHoltCreekandtheacrosstotheCowichanRiverandreturnedthesamewaybecausetheHoltCreekTrestleBridgewasbeingrepaired.Thesalmonrunhadjuststartedsothereweren'ttoomanycorpseslyingabout.TheParkhadpostedsignswarningofabear.Wealwayswalkandtalksothechancesofencounteringabeararesmall.Wedid,however,seeevidence–alargepileofdroppingsatthesideofthetrail.Itstartedrainshortlybeforewereturnedtotheparkinglot,butnotheavilyenoughtospoiltheouSng.Thefallcolourswerespectacular.WeroundedoffanenjoyablemorningwithlunchatJustJake's.

TOUR&LUNCHPROVIDENCEFARMItwasacold,butluckilynot-quite-rainyday,when15ofusmetatProvidenceFarmforatourledbyJackHukonandJerryThibault.ThetourbeganwithafascinaSnghistoryoftheSistersofSt.Ann,whopurchasedthefirst400acresin1864.Thebuildingsandfarmoperatedasseveraldifferentschoolsforboys,andthengirls,formanydecades.Inthesummerof1979,anagreementwasreachedtoestablisharegisteredcharitynamedVancouverIslandProvidenceCommunityAssociaSon(VIPCA)ThefacilitycurrentlyofferscountlessProgramsandameniSesforthoseenrolled,andforcommunityvisitorswhochoosetospendSmeatProvidenceFarm.Hereareafewofthehighlights:Anappleorchard,daSngbackto1932,providesshadeanddécor,aswellasfruitforrevenue,ciders,andingredientsinthemanyfarm-basedrecipes.Anewlyplantedlabyrinthhasrecentlybeenbuilt,designedpurposelytobringpeaceandtranquilitytothosewhostrollthroughthegarden.AddiSonally,afigure“8”gardenallowsAlzheimerspaSentstowanderconSnuouslyinasafe,confinedspace.TheSt.Ann’sGardenClubdayprogram(staffedbyvolunteers),wasbusymakingchilliandrenderingdownpumpkinsforsoupwhenwewalkedthroughtheirwood-heatedcabin.Thiscozybuildingiskeptwarmwithawoodfire,solargreenhouse,andauniqueclaywallbuilttoretainheat.Eventhoughit’slateinthegrowingseason,thegreenhousewasfullofacSvity–andproduce.Hydroponicallygrowncucumberplantsstretcheduptotheglassroof.SaladgreensinraisedbedswereplenSful,asweretheradishes,beetsandturnips(allavailableatSaturdaymarketandattheon-sitefarmstore,openTuesday-Saturday).Thegreenhousehelpsfeedtheenrolledstudentsandanamazingnumberofvolunteersdaily.

ArSsts’workshops,crabrooms,woodshop,toolrepairandmaintenance–justsomeof theacSviSesandprogramsofferedat thisalternaSvecommunity forthose in need. The developmental riding program is one of the mostremarkable,nurturingconfidenceandbalanceforkidswithdisabiliSes. Manyhappy-facedriders,escortedonhorseback,wavedastheypassedus.Another surprisewas the Farm Fashions store, which gratefully accepts usedclothing ingoodcondiSon,and“up-cycles” them. DonaSonscanbedroppedoffatthemainbuilding,tothelebofthestairs.Ourlunchwasavegetarianmeal,withachoiceofthreesalads,twohotdishes,chilli and garlic toast – toomuch to consume, and nearly all home-grown orlocallysourced.ManyofthestaffwerebusilypreparingfortheirearlyChristmascrabfair,tobeheldonDecember2nd,at thefarm. Therevenuegeneratedat thesetypesoffund-raisers isessenSaltothefutureoftheeducaSonalandvocaSonaltradesprograms.The farm operates solely on the donaSons received from government,corporate and private. It’s an amazing facility and the tour was trulyenlightening.Weshouldbeproudtoliveinacommunitythatoffersthistypeoffacility to those in need.
