1 Dundee City Labour Market Bulletin June 2016 By May 2016, the Claimant rate for Dundee City was 3.4, which was higher than the Scottish national average of 2.2. The Claimant rate for males in Dundee City in May 2016 was 5.0, with the rate for females at 1.8. The Claimant Rate for Dundee City in May 2016 had returned to the same level as May 2015. Between May 2014 and May 2016, the number of claimants (JSA/UC*) aged 16-24 declined by 260. Between May 2015 and May 2016, the number of claimants aged 55 plus increased by 65. The number of working households in Dundee City in 2014 was 52.5 per cent, which was lower than the Scottish national average at 56.3 per cent. The number of workless households in Dundee in 2014 was 24.7 per cent, which was substantially higher than the national average of 18.3 per cent. In May 2016, visible long-term unemployment in Dundee City was 1.1 per cent of the working age population. This was substantially higher than the Scottish national average of 0.5 per cent, with Dundee having the third highest visible long-term unemployment rate of any Scottish local authority. By November 2015, the largest concentration of out-of-work benefit recipients was in Pitkerro, with 1,000 recipients and 28.5 per cent of the area population. Stobswell had the second highest concentration of out-of-work benefit recipients, at 25.3 per cent. average of 2.2. The Claimant rate for males in Dundee City in May 2016 was 5.0, with the rate for females at 1.8. The Claimant Rate for Dundee City in May 2016 had returned to the same level as May 2015.

Between May 2014 and May 2016, the number of claimants (JSA/UC*) aged 16-24 declined by 260. Between May 2015 and May 2016, the number of claimants aged 55 plus increased by 65.

The number of working households in Dundee City in 2014 was 52.5 per cent, which was lower than

Definitions:

Claimant Count: The number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance plus the number of people

claiming Universal Credit who are out of work. *The Claimant rate is an expression of the proportion of

the working age population in receipt of benefit for the principle reason of being unemployed. This

measure is seen as the visible element of unemployment and although this does not encompass true

levels of unemployment, it provides an indicator for the direction of unemployment.

Economically active: People aged 16 and over who are employed, self-employed or unemployed; the

economic activity rate is an expression of the percentage of people economically activity as a proportion

of the working aged population 16-64.

Employment rate: The proportion of the working age population 16-64 who are either employed or self-

employed.

Jobseeker’s Allowance: The main benefit for people of working age who are out of work or work on

average less than 16 hours a week.

Unemployed: Defined by the International Labour Organisation as people who are without a job, have

sought work in the last four weeks and are available to start work in the next two weeks or are waiting

to start a job within the next two weeks.

Unemployment rate: The unemployment level for those aged 16 and over divided by the number of

economically active people aged 16 and over.
