Highlights of the excursion gave the students the opportunity to ask questions that directly related to

OH & S which they were able to reflect on and make direct comparisons with their own part time

jobs. The excursion also gave the students the opportunity to put into context topics they had worked

on earlier in the year. In an email that was received after our tour, Mrs Loy said she thoroughly

enjoyed the interaction with the students. The students were great ambassadors for the College.

Drama End-game Last week, students in ATAR Drama, performed scenes from Endgame by Samuel Beckett. Over the course of the term, students understood how to effectively apply different styles and techniques to their scenes. These included; Theatre of the Absurd, Meyerhold and Brecht. Throughout this unit, students learnt how to collaborate, problem-solve, identify themes, and critically analyse texts. Please wish them luck as they prepare for their exams.

Dramatic Make-up

Currently, Year 8 Drama students are learning how to create mood and atmosphere through the use of dramatic tension. To achieve this, we have been exploring the use of sound, silence, and lighting. Last week, students completed a special effects makeup workshop to aid their understanding of design roles. Over the next few weeks, students will be learning how to apply their new-found skills in order to create pieces for their upcoming assessment.

A range of activities continue to flourish with Religious Education, Mathematics and Social Sciences courses being taught in the class areas of the Library. Sport ACC Athletics Update Following the recent Inter-House carnival, our squad for the upcoming ACC Athletics Carnival has been announced and commenced preparations. After winning last year’s carnival, we have earned promotion to C division this year, and we have high hopes another strong showing. Distance runners have been training well on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and this group of runners will be in great shape by the time the carnival rolls around. Several relay teams have also begun fine tuning their changes in preparation for the all-important team events. We now add throws and jumps training into the program and students selected are asked to attend as many sessions as their weekly schedule allows. Training dates are in yellow below, combined with the College sport calendar: ACC Championship Basketball A new initiative for this year has been the expansion of the ACC Championship into basketball. The Championship is an elimination tournament that pits the winners of sub-association sport against each other to crown an overall winner for each age division. After comfortably winning the CAS premiership in the summer season, our Year 9 Boys have progressed to the semi-finals of the competition after a commanding display against CBC Fremantle in Tuesday’s quarter final. Stevan Merenda scored 26 points, and Zac Daniel added 17 as Mr Woodhouse’s team cruised to a comfortable 48-34 score line. The boy’s semi-final opponent is yet to be determined but will likely be played on Thursday 27th August here at IMCC. Our Senior Girls also qualified for the elimination phase but faced a daunting road trip to Helena College on Tuesday afternoon, and went down 18-42. The girls were in the game until the last quarter and they have certainly enjoyed a successful year after some impressive games in the CAS summer season. A big thanks to Ms Argese for coaching the girls.

State Cross Country Championships Congratulations to Year 8 athlete Dante Armstrong, who continued his impressive progress at the recent State Cross Country Championships at Kings Park. In testing weather conditions, Dante finished a very credible 13th against competitors up to two years his senior. Dante will be an important member of our ACC athletics team at the upcoming carnival and it is exciting to see him in great form! Five-a-side Soccer Competition The Year 7 teams have completed their Group fixtures with The GOAT’s and Capalot advancing to the semi-finals, to be held later in the term. They will have to wait a couple of weeks to learn who their opponents will be, although Year 11 outfit Uncle Tony are looking like competition favourites at the moment. Results:

ACC Soccer Championship On Wednesday the 19th of August our Senior Boys and Senior Girls competed in the ACC Championship Soccer competition. The girls travelled to Kingsway and competed against Mercy, Quinns and St Stephen’s in the group stage finishing second in the group with 2 wins and 1 loss. The girls then played off against Prendiville for 3rd spot in a hard-fought game that finished with Prendiville winning 3-2. The senior girls team consisted of a majority of student’s in year 9 and to achieve this result is a great achievement and leaves behind an optimistic future in this competition. Well done to the girls for their dedication, commitment and attitudes leading the way in displaying what the College looks for in the soccer academy program. The boys travelled a great distance to the Irene McCormack oval as we hosted 3 other schools, where only first placed in the group stage would advance through to the next round. The boys competed against Quinns, St Stephen’s in the first two rounds winning both games with plenty of breathing room. In order to advance the boys needed to draw or win against Prendiville. Unfortunately, the boys went down in a nail biting 1-0 loss leaving them to finish second in the group stage and narrowly missing out in a place in the next round of the Championship. Well done to the boys for the exceptional way they displayed sportsmanship in the face of some questionable behaviour from oppositions, setting the example for how sport should be played.

Reflection 21st Sunday/ Twenty First Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A The theme of the readings this weekend is on the Church. Jesus announces His plans to build a Church, a community of believers that will overthrow the rule of evil. First reading: Isaiah 22:19-23 Psalm: Psalm 137(138):1-3, 6, 8 Second reading: Romans 11:33-36 Gospel: Matthew 16:13-20 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he put this question to his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say he is John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ ‘But you,’ he said, ‘who do you say I am?’ Then Simon Peter spoke up, ‘You are the Christ,’ he said, ‘the Son of the living God.’ Jesus replied, ‘Simon son of Jonah, you are a happy man! Because it was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. So, I now say to you: You are Peter and, on this rock, I will build my Church. And the gates of the underworld can never hold out against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you lose on earth shall be considered lost in heaven.’ Then he gave the disciples strict orders not to tell anyone that he was the Christ. Today’s Gospel reminds us that the Church is built on the foundation of faith in Jesus Christ. Peter announces the core of our faith, that Jesus is God’s only Son. As a disciple, each one of us can also say, "Yes, Jesus is the Christ." Our faith is a rock foundation of the community of disciples of Jesus. It is the rock on which the Church is built, the rock of faith. When we proclaim our faith, we are part of the community of disciples throughout the whole world on which the Church depends. Like Peter, our recognition of Jesus Christ comes with responsibility, the responsibility to spread the good news of the kingdom of God. Mrs Daphne Peters Campus Ministry

It is with great pleasure that the College congratulates Mrs Peggy Fitzgerald on achieving the title of Microsoft Expert. A tremendous amount of work and effort outside of school hours was needed for her to be awarded this prestigious title from Microsoft. In addition, she was required to present at a Microsoft Conference held in the United States earlier in the year. Mrs Fitzgerald is a leader within our Teaching and Learning Working party and co runs a weekly workshop for staff after school to help them improve teaching and learning at the College. Well Done Peggy Mr Andrew Billingsley Deputy Principal

Merriwa Primary School I want to say a huge thank you to the College for allowing us to use the bus last Friday. Your generosity in loaning us both a bus and Mr Declan Hogan as the driver supported our Community Access Program, whereby we visited the local beach to learn about water safety.

Mrs Sharon Hogan Teacher Merriwa Primary School

Mid Term Reminders As we approach a well-deserved long weekend for our students I would like to take the opportunity to remind students and parents of some issues that have come to my attention over the first five weeks of the term. • Mobile phone use is not permitted during the school day and phones should be kept in student’s lockers.
