the newsletter for more details. If you have additional ideas for trips and/or tours please share them with Dale.

We have finally completed the auction review and you will see those changes in the coming months. We will also start offering a silent auction at each general meeting. Any members who have an item they wish to auction off may do so during the meeting. A table will be provided for such items and the auction will be done at the end of the break period. This option was discussed at our last board meeting and is offered as an alternative to having it during our regular auction in July.

On April 24th, Rockler will be holding a Guild Day at their store in Schaumberg, IL to assist local clubs with their enrollment. We now have 133 members. Bill Hochmuth has done a great job publicizing our club. He has developed a new brochure that will be offered for the first time at the Rockler event.

Len Swanson is promoting the idea of the club purchasing a Work Sharp sharpening system for members to use. Please let Len know if you support this idea.

Thank you to Owl Hardwood for their continued support of our annual toy making project. This support provides us with some of the wood we use for our various toys. All members need to thank Owl for their assistance. I hope each and every member will be able to make toys for this years project.

ActivitiesTwenty-three members of our club attended the tool sharpening seminar on March 13 that was held at Rick Ogren's shop.  A special thanks to Rick Ogren and Wayne Maier for sharing

their expertise and equipment with members.

Chip carving classes are being held on April 17 and 24 .  The instructor for these day long classes is Milford Lau, a club member and master chip carver.

On May 22, we have scheduled  a tour of  Crab Tree Farm that is located at 982 Sheridan Road in Lake Bluff, Illinois.  This facility houses an extensive collection of arts and crafts furniture that is kept in 30 rooms in  five farm buildings.  There are stairs that will have to used in three of the buildings.  The one hour and 45 minute guided tour will begin at 1:00 pm.  For those interested in car pooling we will depart Paneras on Roosevelt Road in Glen Ellyn at 10:30 am.  We are planning to have lunch prior to the tour at Bluffington's restaurant located at 113 East Scranton road in Lake Bluff at 11:45 a.m.  Cost for the tour is $15.   Sign up for the Crab Tree Farm tour will be at the April 28 meeting.

Programs

At the March meeting, Sharon Bechtold, a pyrographer (wood burner) from Bartlett, IL, presented a fascinating and informative

Cathy Godfrey and Peter DʼAttomo

program. Sharon works with the grain patterns of wood using not only the movement of the grain but also wormholes, knots, and missing bark to enhance the image. Her tool of choice is the Optima wood burning system with wire tips, which has a variable heat system that heats and cools quickly. My old typical wood burning tool from Michael’s pales in comparison. She said that 90% of all her work is done with three pens: the shader, skew, and hair tip. Having an art education certainly helps matters. However, there are many designs and patterns available from Dover and other sources.

She begins all work with sketches on tracing paper and transfers the sketch using Super Chacopaper, (available at Michael’s) which is water soluble. When Sharon burns,

Sharon Bechtold shows how she uses watercolors with her pryrography

three things are very important: pressure, heat, duration. With pressure, the harder you press, the darker the burn; heat…the higher the heat, the darker the burn; duration…the longer you hold the burn the darker it is.

Asked what wood she likes, she said that she buys wood because it’s interesting. She tries to match the wood grains with her subject, to follow the flow, to mimic what she feels. In drawing wildlife she is careful to get the eyes correct, because if they are right, everything else will fall into place. Several things to watch when burning is always follow the contour of the wood when burning and be careful to avoid a sap wood.

Sharon does use a white pencil for highlights and watercolors for eyes. She usually finishes her wood with poly acrylic or polyurethane so the burn doesn’t fade.

For more information about Sharon check out her website: http://sharonbechtold.net . She also offers classes (see page 5).

At the April 28th meeting, Dave Garney will make a presentation on, "Your Woodworking Project has a Wonderful Photo Story." Learn how to create exciting DVDs with still photos & movie clips; or maybe, just learn to create a better photo scrapbook. Your "customer" or family will enjoy the story now . . . and again in 30 years. The principles are the same for photo albums, scrapbooks or DVDs for the TV. Let the kids enjoy seeing themselves on TV while helping to sand that table leg. The presentation will review time-line intensity techniques to keep it interesting -- just like in the comic books; by using: story clues; sequences of composition; fuzzy; quiet; blackness; audio punch; etc. See some concepts in a variety of short training and travel videos.

When previous program speakers offer lessons, Whit Anderson will report them in the Newsletter. He established the Newsletter deadline as April 12.

Rick distributed an updated draft of the auction rules and procedures. After discussion they were adopted. A silent auction proposal will be incorporated into the general meetings. The auction is tentatively scheduled for July 31 subject to site availability.

The board authorized Stan to purchase 8/4 material for toys as needed.

Bill is organizing our participation in the Rockler Guild Day. He has enough items to display but needs one more volunteer to work the exhibit.

Final comments were provided to Bill for creation of the new club brochure.

The board voted to support the Chicago Woodturners’ symposium with $200. Our new brochures will be ready in time for the event.

A motion was made and seconded to have the club purchase a Wood Sharp sharpening station to be kept by the club and loaned to members. The motion was tabled to allow time for members to consider the proposal.

The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.

From Our LibraryI received a couple of new books this month and, while I'm listing them, I'm hoping some of you will take them home and review them for me.

First, Bookcases, Shelves, and Cabinets, by the editors of

Woodsmith magazine. This one looks interesting and, it has what I wish all woodworking books had, it's spiral bound. That makes it very easy to take into the shop and keep the pages flat so they're easy to

Dic Drees

read.

Second, Shop Drawings for Craftsman Furniture, measured and drawn by Robert W. Lang. Lots of interesting drawings for anyone interested in this design style. I've skimmed this book and found some interesting design possibilities. Maybe Wayne Maier will review this book for the club (hint, hint).

Third and last, Spray Finishing Made Simple, by Jeff Jewitt. Jeff is a well recognized woodworker and finishing authority. This book is for any member who is interested in spray finishing, both beginner and more experienced.

Oh yes, one more thing. I've got some more turning DVDs that need to be reviewed by our members so that I can continue to have only the best DVDs for our collection. Anyone interested in helping me out with this, see me at the meeting and take a stack of DVDs home with you.

That's it From Our Library for April, 2010.

Meeting Location

New MembersThe DuPage Woodworkers welcomes members from all over

the region. Our members consist of all skill levels; from beginners to professionals. Meetings and field trips provide an opportunity to gain and share knowledge about woodworking. Our regular meetings are once a month for about 2 1/2 hours. Meetings (usually the fourth Wednesday of the month) consist of some announcements about activities, a short discussion of any woodworking problems that members want to ask about, a drawing for woodworking prizes, and a presentation on some aspect of woodworking.

If you are interested in joining the DuPage Woodworkers, you are invited to attend a meeting. If you become a member, dues are twenty-five dollars per year. Membership entitles you to attend meetings, to go on field trips (shop visits, woodworking businesses, etc.), and a discount at several local woodworking supply companies.

If you have questions about joining the DuPage Woodworkers, please contact Bruce Kinney ([email protected]).
