Wharton Park is Durham City’s hidden gem located behind the railway station on Windy Hill, alongside North Road. At the summit of the park is the Battery, a castle-shaped folly. From here you get an amazing panoramic view of the city, including Durham Cathedral, Durham Castle and the railway viaduct, accommodating the East Coast Mainline. This Victorian park is a firm favourite among families, with all generations enjoying the parks scenery, play areas and café.

Re-opening in May 2016 after a full restoration of the park, thanks to the funding of the Heritage Lottery Fund, the ‘People’s Park’ is fast becoming a destination in its own right. Visit the Heritage Centre for lunch in the glass fronted café, listen to live music in the outdoor amphitheatre, enjoy the spectacular views of Durham City from the battery, or explore the park’s beautiful surroundings. The restoration has also meant that the much loved features including the miniature car track and putting green have been brought back to life.

Crook Hall, a medieval manor house, built in the 13th century is one of the oldest inhabited houses in Durham City. Often overlooked, this stunning Grade II listed venue based in Durham City Market Place is a hidden gem in the heart of the city. Behind its modest glass fronted reception gallery are hidden a variety of period rooms including the dramatic Main Hall dating from 1849. Visit the Crush Hall, stopping to discover the curious life of the diminutive Count Boruwlaski. Pre organised tours behind the scenes can be arranged. The Guildhall also hosts meetings of the Freemen of Durham who are members of ancient trade and craft Guilds or Companies which can be traced back over many centuries. Originally there were sixteen Guilds although only eight now survive. The oldest recorded was the Weavers Guild whose records go back to 1450. The Guilds had significant power as they controlled much of the commercial and economic life of the city and were responsible for the training of apprentices, monitoring the standards of trade and craft workmanship. Over the years liberal legislation has weakened the political and trading privileges of the guilds but they are still active in the welfare of the City and retain privileges which include the right of Herbage, the right to hold meetings in the Guildhall and the right to have a stall in the market free of charge.More information visit www.durhamcityfreemen.org
