CENTRE FOR FOOD (CFF)The W. Galen Weston Centre for Food (CFF) is Durham Region’s first-ever post-secondary presence focused on the field-to-fork concept, which is based on the harvesting, storing, processing, packaging, sale and consumption of food – in particular the production of local food for local consumers.

Durham College has adopted this concept and applied it to a diverse range of programs that crossover traditional academic schools with the curriculum, faculty expertise and equipment required to implement field-to-fork, built into several of the college’s programs. The CFF is also home to a number of hospitality-focused programs from Culinary Management to Horticulture – Food and Farming. Whether you want to be in the kitchen, or in the field, the CFF has you covered.

“Enrolling in the Paralegal program at Durham College has been one of my best decisions so far. Having the support and guidance of the teachers, be it with assignments, tests, or mock trials, it’s clear to see that the faculty work very hard to inspire students to succeed.

My goal once I graduate is to work in small claims court and take on cases related to resident and landlord tenancy as well as traffic ticketing cases.”

Co-operative Education (Co-op) officeCo-op is a model of education that integrates a student’s academic learning with workplace learning in fields relevant to the student’s academic and personal goals. Similar to an academic course, work terms are a mandatory component to this form of experiential learning. Services are available and supports are dedicated to co-op student success.

Co-op provides students in identified programs with the opportunity to gain paid work experience and apply in-class learning while exploring their chosen field through a planned sequence of academic semesters and at least one work term (this varies by program). Programs with co-op options require prospective students to first apply to the regular program and once they become Durham College students, they may apply to transfer to the co-op option of their program during their first year of study. Enrolment in co-op

is limited and the processes for securing a work term with an employer are competitive.

International students should note that by entering the co-op option of a program it may extend the overall duration of their program and therefore create the need for an amendment to their study permit which does have a cost attached. International students must meet with the International Education office to receive instruction and documentation to apply for a co-op work permit to ensure that their status in Canada is valid at all times.

Access and Support CentreThe team at the Access and Support Centre (ASC) works in partnership with students and faculty to provide full opportunities for academic success. They are committed to providing friendly and confidential services for students who are temporarily at risk or have been identified with an exceptionality to ensure inclusive and accessible learning environments on campus.

“The ESL program has been a good experience for me. It has helped me become more comfortable in Canada since I did not speak the local language and needed help learning how to communicate in English. The instructors worked with me to improve my speaking, reading, grammar and writing. I also worked with an advisor who has helped me in my schooling and different activities on campus and off to adjust more easily into Canadian culture and the school system.”
