Durham’s Colleges Durham University is distinctive – a residential collegiate university with long-held traditions and modern values.

Our colleges offer a unique student experience within a supportive community on a human scale, where academic and personal skills can flourish. In Durham City there are 13 undergraduate colleges each with a unique history and culture. Although the colleges are within walking distance of each other and other university buildings, visiting them all isn’t feasible in one day. We recommend you research each of the colleges before booking.

WHAT IS A COLLEGE?College is where you can live, socialise and personally develop; ensuring you graduate with much more than a degree. You become part of a scholarly community of staff and students from across the University and beyond. In the smaller-scale college environments, you are offered a high level of support and can easily get involved in a wide range of extra-curricular activities alongside living in college accommodation and enjoying a range of excellent facilities. Many of our students get involved in helping to run aspects of their college, offering unique leadership opportunities and providing valuable experience for future careers.

COLLINGWOOD COLLEGELarge and incredibly active, Collingwood boasts a vibrant community of students and staff and is one of the most laid back and informal of the University colleges.

COLLEGE OF ST HILD AND ST BEDE Set in 16 acres of parkland, one of the oldest and largest colleges, with a great sense of community and lots of opportunities to get involved in college life.

GREY COLLEGE A liberal, accepting college founded just over 50 years ago, Grey is a traditional college but the traditions don’t dominate college life.

HATFIELD COLLEGEThe second oldest college with strong traditional roots; known for its famous ‘Hatfield spirit’ and enthusiastic student community.

JOSEPHINE BUTLER COLLEGE A young, vibrant, free-spirited college; practices some of the University’s oldest traditions, giving them a unique Butler twist.

ST AIDAN’S COLLEGE Relaxed, inclusive and modern with a caring, spirited community offering lots of support and opportunities.

ST CHAD’S COLLEGESet in beautiful historic buildings, a small, traditional, homely college with an incredibly strong sense of community.

ST CUTHBERT’S SOCIETYA large, diverse and inclusive college appealing to a wide range of people. Based on two different sites, St Cuthbert’s is an eclectic mix of the old and the new. Students can use facilities at both locations.

ST JOHN’S COLLEGEA small, caring, traditional college with a Christian foundation but open to people of all faiths or none; housed in historic, quirky buildings full of character.

ST MARY’S COLLEGEA traditional college with a long and distinguished history - yet progressive and forward-looking; set in beautiful landscaped grounds with views over Durham City.

TREVELYAN COLLEGEA supportive, friendly, unique college with a strong community feel. Traditional on formal occasions but with an emphasis on the new and developing.

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE The oldest of the colleges, where activities and facilities are influenced by long-standing tradition; part of Durham’s World Heritage Site, students have a strong sense of pride and love for ‘Castle’.

VAN MILDERT COLLEGEA large, relaxed and lively college centred around a lake in spacious grounds, particularly well-known for its involvement in the outward Durham community through outreach projects.

• If you have a specific individual query or have been unable to attend a presentation session our academic staff will be available within advertised Q&A sessions. Q&A sessions themselves are not bookable, however attendees must be booked onto at least one Open Day session to take part in the Q&A.

Guest Lectures

• Drop in without booking to: KPMG/BSc Accounting, Business School programmes and Pharmacy.

CAN I STAY OVERNIGHT?

Should you and other visitor(s) wish to stay overnight prior to an Open Day, bed and breakfast is available within some colleges.

B&B costs are £40 for a single standard room or £75 for a twin or double standard room.

Should you book to stay overnight, some colleges may offer an evening meal, which costs £4.00 per person.

CAN I PRE-ORDER LUNCH?A hot servery lunch is offered at some colleges (£3.00) and can be booked online.

A sandwich lunch can be pre-booked (£3.00) and will be available for redemption at cafés in: Calman Learning Centre, Chemistry Building, Bill Bryson Library and Dunelm House (Students’ Union). (See page 14).

Your email confirmation will summarise all of your purchased provision details. You will require a copy of this as proof of purchase.

Bookings for accommodation and catering can be cancelled up to 7 days prior to the Open Day and a full refund will be issued. Any cancellations made with less than 7 days notice are non-refundable.

You will see a list of all available sessions including academic talks, college tours and general guidance talks (pages 16-23).

Each person in your visitor group needs to book a place to attend our Open Day. We are unable to add visitors to your booking once made. If you are bringing parents or other guests with you please ensure you ‘Add a Visitor’ and book a place for them before you confirm and submit your booking.

Log on to the booking system www.durham.ac.uk/opendays You’ll be prompted to ‘book a place’. Enter the name and contact details of the student. Click save and continue. If you do not have access to the Internet please call 0191 3349191.

Select talks and tours. Don’t forget to click SAVE before moving to the next page!

TOP TIPS: Remember to schedule regular breaks into your day. Use the maps to see where sessions are taking place and don’t forget to plan in walking time between venues.

ADDING PARENTS AND GUESTS?

If there is more than one person in your group you need to repeat the booking process for each person. CLICK: ‘Add Visitor’.

Visitors accompanying you must book onto all sessions they wish to attend. They do not need to attend the same sessions as you.

Check and confirm details.

Click ‘confirm’ when you are happy with the final booking arrangements and have checked all details.

A confirmation email will be sent. This will list your booked sessions and your visitors’ booked sessions. Any meals and/or accommodation purchased will also be listed.

TOP TIP: Missing your confirmation email? – check your junk email box.

Save and print your confirmation email. This is your Open Day Ticket. It lists where you need to be and at what time, provides proof of your booking for sessions and for any catering and accommodation. You will be asked to show this at the door of each session.

TOP TIP: You may not be admitted to sessions if you are unable to provide a booking confirmation.

TOP TIP: Priority for places at all sessions will be given to prospective students, followed by parents, then other visitors.

HOW CAN I MAKE THE MOST OF MY VISIT?Plan your day before you book. Consider walking distances between venues and the timetable of talks. This will maximise your time and energy.

BY RAIL

Durham is well served by rail links from major centres across the country. The East Coast mainline service from London King’s Cross can take less than 3 hours and express links operate from Manchester, Sheffield and Leeds with cross-country links from Scotland, the Midlands, and the South West.

Durham train station is approximately 0.8 miles from the Elvet Riverside buildings (25 on the map) and 1.5 miles from the Mountjoy site (12, 13, 14, 15, 40, 41, 43 and 60 on the map).

The number 40 Cathedral bus service runs regularly from the train station into the city centre. To check the schedule and route visit www.durham.gov.uk and search for Cathedral Bus

A University Shuttle Bus will run from the train station to the Mountjoy site on a circular route throughout the day (08.00 – 18.00).

BY COACH

There are several express coach services daily from most major cities. From the city bus station a bus service runs every 15 minutes past the colleges on South Road. The number 6 bus runs from the bus station to the junction leading to Palatine Centre and the Hill Colleges.

BY AIR

Durham is 26 miles from Newcastle Airport and 24.3 miles from Durham Tees Valley Airport. Both have regular domestic and international flights. Newcastle Airport is linked to Durham City by rail services. Travellers into Durham Tees Valley can take advantage of the free Sky Express bus service that links the airport to Darlington railway station, which has regular connections to Durham.

Travelling to the University

Please note: there is limited city centre parking and no on-site parking provision. You are encouraged to consider using alternative means of transport.

BY ROAD

Durham City centre is two miles from the A1(M). Leave the motorway at Junction 62 on the A690 Durham - Sunderland road and follow signs to Durham City centre.

PUBLIC PARKING

You are advised to arrive early and there is no guaranteed parking on offer. Please note that the road running through the Market Place to the Cathedral is subject to a £2.00 congestion charge which must be paid.

PARKING

The University operates a green travel plan targeted at reducing the use of cars and traffic congestion in Durham City. We are therefore unable to provide on-site car parking.

ACCESS AROUND THE CITY AND VISITORS WITH DISABILITIES

Durham is a compact city that you’ll find simple to navigate with our map.

Please be prepared for all weather conditions and wear comfortable shoes and clothing.

Durham is a small medieval city with many old buildings and this may present some access difficulties, particularly for wheelchair users. We can offer limited on-site car parking to anyone with mobility difficulties. Please contact us in advance to arrange this.


PARK AND RIDEWe strongly advise visitors to use public transport. Should you choose to drive, Durham has three Park and Ride car parks.

Belmont (Durham City), Sniperly and Howlands. A ticket must be purchased for each park and ride visitor when using and Park and Ride facilities even if the bus is not used. Facilities close at 7.00pm and vehicles will be locked in overnight if still on site at this time.

At Belmont Park and Ride additional University provided coaches will run from 8.15am into the city centre. The final University return coach will depart at 5.45pm from the Palatine Centre (Stockton Road). Durham County Council Shuttle Buses will run beyond this time.

Arrival Open Day InformationINFORMATION DESKS

We have three Information Desks and these will be staffed throughout the day.

Desks are located at:

• The Palatine Centre, ground floor

• Durham Students’ Union, Dunelm House, first floor reception

• The Calman Learning Centre reception, ground floor, Lower Mountjoy.

There is also a staffed information point located on South Road.

You do not need to register your attendance when you arrive at the Open Day and you may find it quicker and easier to go directly to your first session. Our information desks will remain open throughout the day where you can pick up:

• A copy of the Open Day Guide

• An Open Day Map

• Changes to the schedule, including room changes, cancellations or additional sessions

• Bottled water

• Taxi, bus, shuttle bus and park and ride information

• Umbrellas, rain ponchos.

FIRST AID AND LEFT LUGGAGE

First Aid – incidents to be reported to a staff member or Open Day Ambassador. First aid cover is provided by St John’s Ambulance Service.

Left luggage (at the owner’s risk) at Palatine Centre Information Desk.

FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND THE UNIVERSITY

The maps within this guide and signage around the city will help you to navigate around Durham University.

Our current students, clearly visible in Durham University Open Day t-shirts, will be working as Open Day Ambassadors. Our Ambassadors are on hand to answer any questions you may have and to talk to you about their Durham student experience.

University catering outlets offer a wide variety of hot and cold meals, snacks and drinks to keep you refreshed and raring to go.

Don’t forget you can save time and money by pre-booking lunch. Lunch cost £3.00 per person and can be exchanged for a sandwich lunch at one of our cafés or restaurants*, or for a hot meal in some of our colleges. Please see details of what’s on offer within the online booking system.

Open Day Tours Drop-Ins COLLEGE TOURS College life is a big part of the distinctive Durham University student experience. Many of our students say that being part of a College community is one of the best things about their time at Durham.

Whilst our colleges share a lot of similarities, every college has its own character defined by its buildings, traditions and people. With a little bit of research you will be able to find a college that has a style and atmosphere to suit you.

Each college will be running a short tour of facilities led by current students and college staff. You must book to attend these sessions. Please do not be disappointed if you are turned away should you have not booked. Additionally at most colleges you have the opportunity to drop in to a short presentation about the college.

Booking is Essential.

All colleges will run tours at 30 minute intervals. The first tour starts at 9.00 am and the last tour departs at 4.30 pm. No tours will be delivered between 12.30 and 13.00.

St Cuthbert’s Society will host tours of their Parson’s Field site (16b on map key). St Cuthbert’s Society Bailey accommodation and facilities are closed due to maintenance and improvement works.
