Thank you for the love you share with

God's people! Dear Church Family,

Thank you for the love you share with God's people! I am so happy to love God by serving others with you in Kingsport, TN and beyond. A passage near and dear to my heart holds true at Holy Trinity.

“For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a

ransom for many.” Mark 10:45 Over the last 9 months since I arrived in Kingsport, I have learned so much about your com-passionate care for the people of this community and beyond. Having joined with you in many of the ministries where you care for others, I see your love for God as you serve oth-ers. Those ministries include but are not limited to the following: Family Promise, The Salvation Army lunch program, Meals on Wheels, Backpack Program, “Sunday Undies,” and Food Bags for the hungry provided throughout our community. I could go on and on about the outpouring of love I witness at Holy Trinity. I was recently talking with Pastor Marvin Cameron of 1

st Baptist Church, Kingsport about the

Family Promise program. I told him that I was amazed at the outpouring of love from folks at Holy Trinity through Family Promise as well as our many Outreach programs. Pastor Cameron looked at me and smiled and said, Kingsport is a loving community that cares for many people. We both agree that there is a wonderful spirit of loving service to others here in Kingsport. You’ve heard a lot recently about our Bedrock Beliefs here at Holy Trinity. Loving God by serving others is an obvious testimony of God’s love witnessed through you here at HTLC. One program near and dear to our hearts that is suffering tremendously right now is Family Promise. I was mindful of the challenges we face with Family Promise while recently watching America’s Got Talent. On a recent program they had a group of the homeless from San Diego called Voices of the Homeless highlighting some of the facets of those who become homeless. This show was a very good witness to some of the reasons people become homeless. I believe the story of this Homeless Choir will take away some of the stereotypical thoughts and increase compassion for the homeless. Again, I could not help but be reminded of some of the challenges we face right now including this program which provides housing for homeless families. Where are these folks staying while churches are unable to provide housing? Please keep this ministry in your prayers. Because of COVID-19, the Family Promise minis-try is suffering tremendously. If you’re not keenly aware of this program, let me encourage you to visit their website to hear and see the story of Family Promise. You may click on the following link to go to the Family Promise website.

(https://familypromise.org/our-story/). Bedrock Beliefs of Family Promise can be seen right on their website. In the words of Family Promise: We are Family Promise Transforming the lives of families experiencing homelessness. Because every child deserves a home. Our Story A simple act of compassion set in motion a national movement to end family homelessness. Why We Exist In the United States today, one child out of six lives in poverty. Families with children make up 35% of the people in this country who experience homeless-ness. Get Involved Help homeless and low-income families regain their independence. In 2019, Family Promise was featured on the Today Show. Two mothers interviewed in Columbia, SC are great examples of this program and the difference you make through your volunteer efforts. (https://youtu.be/cHHn7jatnmE) Let me encourage you to take a look at this Today Show link so you may hear of the difference the Family Promise ministry makes in the lives of God’s people. What are some advantages of the Family Promise program over a more tradi-tional shelter? • It is cost-effective because it utilizes existing community resources. • This program doesn’t institutionalize shelter as a solution to homelessness. • About 76 percent of the guest families find permanent housing, often with volunteers’ help.

Family Promise can be a vital outreach ministry within the walls of the members’ own church or faith building.

Pastor Marvin Cameron and I as well as other Kingsport area churches involved in Family Promise are thankful for this program and for your involvement with Family Promise. Kingsport churches play an important part of the program and make a dif-ference. The Family Promise ministry is just one more way we love God by serving others. Holy Trinity Lutheran Church continues to be a vital link to Family Promise of Kingsport.

P. 3 of 4 I'm thankful for both the Peters family and the Chandler family for making a difference in the lives of others through Family Promise while serving in lead roles for many years. Did you know…

Jon Peters, who you’ve heard passionately witness to this program, is on the board of directors for Family Promise.

Jon and Carolyn Peters have both served many times as a host family for the homeless who are selected for the Family Promise program when they stay at Holy Trinity.

James and Carolyn Chandler have been Family Promise Coordinators for many

years. James and Carolyn Chandler have spent many nights at HTLC when our church

hosts Family Promise families.

James and Carolyn Chandler have recently saw fit to step aside as Coordinators. We thank you Chandler family for your many years as Coordinators of the Family Promise ministry. Your example of many years of service is a tremendous witness of what it means to love God by serving others. As your pastor, I ask everyone at HTLC to prayerfully consider whether God may be calling you to be the new Coordinator for Family Promise at Holy Trinity. We are hopeful that we may continue to be God’s hands and feet as we serve homeless fami-lies through Family Promise. If you are interested in becoming the Coordinator for Family Promise, you may call me at the church office at 423-247-9106 or call my cell 864-561-5700. Please prayerfully consider if God may be calling you to serve as Coordinator of the Family Promise ministry of God’s love for families in need. I am grateful to God for all of you who have answered God's call to love God by serv-ing others through Family Promise at HTLC. I continue to be grateful for all who sign up as host families throughout the Family Promise history at Holy Trinity. The question now is, “Where do we go from here”? This transformation ministry of the church is a tremendous witness to our motto at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Helping Transform Lives in Christ (HTLC). I pray we will continue being involved with Family Promise. Any of us could end up homeless. I can only imagine what it is like to be homeless. Many times, you may hear those who are blessed to be cared for through Family Promise say these words; I never thought I’d end up homeless. Some will actually tell you how embarrassing it is for them to be homeless. Can you stop for a moment and imagine the emotional pain of these homeless families? Your compassionate care of others in need is a great opportunity for us all. If you are interested in glorifying God by serving others through Family Promise, the opportunity to begin is now.

P. 4 of 4 The words GO-BE-DO have great impact on how we respond to the love God has for shown us. According to God's Word we serve as we… GO and make disciples of all nations BE the light of Christ that shines in the world DO the will of your Father in heaven Jesus says to his disciples, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 "In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:16 "For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” Matthew 12:50 Holy Trinity Lutheran Church family, thank you for all of the ways you love God by Helping Transform Lives in Christ. Together, we continue to pray... Yours in Christ, Pastor Scottie

Salvation Army (update)

The Salvation Army are continuing to serve bag lunches out their back door rather than

serving a hot lunch in their dining hall.

Our HTLC members sign up to serve the first Saturday of each month and that should con-

tinue to be put on hold.

Whenever we find out from the Salvation Army that they are resuming normal hot lunches,

we can resume with our volunteers.

Thank you!

SUMMARY OF COUNCIL MINUTES

May 11, 2020

Meeting held by Zoom was opened at 7:08 PM with devotions and prayer. Sue Morgan provided a safety

moment discussing the importance of face masks and the correct procedure for removing the mask to

minimize transfer of germs/virus to face and eyes.

Minutes of April 13 meeting and all financial reports were reviewed and approved as presented. Even

though we have been out of worship, our financials are holding up pretty well thanks to our

congregation’s diligence and dedication to Holy Trinity. Discussion was held on offering direct bank to

bank transfer giving. Treasurer has looked into this before and there usually is a charge involved so we

have not pursued. However he will connect with one of our banker members to explore in more detail.

Packets of information regarding the ballot to reduce council size (from 12 members plus pastor to 8

members plus pastor) and the ballot to elect new council members are ready to send and will go out this

week. Voting by electronic methods was evaluated and determined that by mail in this case was a way

to be sure to reach the most people.

Vice President Churn has been working on two policies – some revisions to our building use policy and a

new policy on safety and security. A date was set for final inputs to the policies and they will be voted on

at our June meeting.

The majority of the council time was spent getting ideas and opinions about going back to an in-church

worship option. Some members feel safe returning to worship stating that businesses are getting ready

to open, yet some are reluctant at this time heeding the warnings that as more things open up, the

likelihood increases that there may be a spike in virus spread. We do have a large group of “vulnerable”

members. So far the decision has been made to continue on line services in May. In the past two

decisions, the Pastor and council president reviewed recommendations from health officials, including

doctors in our congregation, state and local government guidelines, church governing body guidelines

and decisions by other churches. They then made a recommendation to council and a vote was taken.

One thing that obviously needs to be considered is the readiness from a health standpoint of our

worship procedure. Fortunately, Worship and Music ministry has already started developing ways to do

worship based on synod and health official guidelines. It was also thought that we should continue to

provide a digital message for those who are not able or choose not to start back right away. Our AV

ministry team was contacted and will develop procedures to video actual service. It was suggested that

we consider some type of task force to coordinate all of this. Meanwhile, during May we will continue to

monitor virus activity in our area, stay connected with the appropriate agencies and with synod, and

work to be sure we are ready when we feel it is safe to re-open our sanctuary for Sunday morning

worship. This will be major focus of our June meeting.

In a subsequent called Zoom meeting on May 18, David Reames presented a draft of a proposed revision

to our vision statement as well as our mission statement. This is in preparation for our work the second

half of this year on Vision 2020- what is the pathway that Holy Trinity is being called by God to take in

the future. Feedback and suggestions were made and David will work to include those ideas and present

a modified version. This will be voted on in our June meeting.

MESSAGE FROM PASTOR AND COUNCIL PRESIDENT:

The past two and a half months have been trying times for our country, our community, and for our church. Making decisions to not have “in-church” services or other group gatherings in our facilities was very difficult. We have been guided by medical experts, government edicts, ELCA guidelines and much prayer. In all cases, we have put the protection of our parishioners as top priority. During this time we have adapted and learned many new things to keep our ministry going. We have learned how to video a service and send it out so our members and others can see and hear the Word proclaimed. We have learned how to have on line meetings of church council, Sunday school, and ministry teams utilizing Zoom technology. We have re-vitalized our telephone tree to stay in touch with our members. As businesses and professional groups began to reopen due to the impact of shut downs on our economy, we also knew that we needed to plan for the time we felt comfortable starting back to in-church worship. We also recognize that many in our congregation are in the “vulnerable” category of being senior citizens and/or having underlying health issues. So when we do come back to our church to worship we also want to continue making that service available on line for those who have health issues or choose not to attend for various reasons. Much work has been done by our Worship and Music team to develop a Sunday morning service that meets the guidelines put forth to make the service as safe as possible. Our Audio Visual team has spent many hours and have acquired new equipment to make these services available on line. A group of nurses coordinated by our Parish Nurse are looking into the best most practical way to clean our nave before and after every service. We have remained closed during the month of May. We are getting questions about what is going to happen in June. Many health experts are predicting a rise in the number of cases as businesses re-open and people go back to life as in the past. At the June 8 meeting of Church Council, this subject will be addressed with the best available data and recommendations as guides. We are hopeful that we will not see an upward spike in our region. Now that we have our procedures for worship in place, we hope to be able to suggest a start back date in the near future. We will communicate with you our plan immediately following that meeting. Please pray for us that we may be guided by the Holy Spirit to make the best decision for all our members.

The corona virus has not gone away.

Proverbs 4 : 6 “ Do not forsake wisdom, and she will

protect you; love her and she will watch

over you ”

The Cambridge English Dictionary defines the meaning of wisdom as “ the ability to use your

knowledge and experience to make good decisions and judgments”.

Within the last few weeks we have all been affected in some way by the virus. Our lives have changed.

We have received from numerous sources an abundance of information about this virus that is infecting

and killing. Ultimately, it is up to each of us to utilize the information we have received about this

virus. It is up to each of us to make wise decisions, exhibit safe behaviors, and use good judgment in all

our actions for this virus has not gone away.

Thank You for your blood donations.

It is greatly appreciated.

THE EARLY CHURCH A Ray Vander Laan Course.

Real faith, real life. For Christians today, faith in God can some-times seem to be a cerebral choice. For the early church, it was the difference between life and death. Discover the passion and commitment early believers displayed as they claimed Jesus in the face of fierce consequences and powerful adversaries.
