We began Thursday morning with what I hope will become a new tradition at Duxbury High School. Greg Woods, DHS Class of 2004 and a veteran of the US Army, led the school in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in honor of Veterans Day. I would like to thank John Magnarelli and the American Legion in Duxbury for their help in coordinating this. Dear Students and Families,

I am increasingly concerned with the traffic congestion in front of the library after school. Between 2:30 PM and 2:50 PM the high number of cars in the pickup line is routinely stretching out onto Alden St. I would like to ask all parents to please pull as far forward as possible while in line. Please remember that you need to be in the right lane as you pass in front of the Library and then cross into the left lane as you come around Alden. This lane shift allows for the buses to get to the front of the high school and, once behind Alden, allow for passing traffic behind Alden and DMS to have a way out as they exit. I would also ask any parent who can wait until 3:00 PM to do so as traffic is almost non-existent on campus by 3:10 PM.

And finally, I wanted to congratulate the Girls Volleyball and Cheerleading Teams who both won their first South Sectional Finals in school history.

Information for Seniors: We know that the college application process can be a very anxious time for students and families. This year close to 80% of students applied with an early admission deadline (Nov 15 or earlier). Counselors and teachers have been working diligently to get all of the student’s supplemental information prepared and sent. Be assured that if you meet your deadlines, we will meet ours. Please note that colleges are processing many applica-tions from the November 1st deadline. If you get an email stating that something is missing, it does not mean it was not sent. Touch base with your Guidance Counselor if you have concerns. First term grades will be sent automatically to colleges once they are available (after November 13th). If you do not wish to have them sent you must speak with your Guidance Counselor prior to November 13th.

Remember to submit your Transcript Request Form (green sheet) to your counselor at least 3 weeks prior to your fist deadline. Letters for students in the class of 2018 who have qualified to receive the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship based on their performance on the high school MCAS were mailed out and students who are eligible will receive one. If you have questions please contact your Guidance Counselor.

Information for Juniors: This year the Guidance department has been able to secure time in classrooms to assist stu-dents in planning for life after graduation. On October 23rd and 24th counselors met with Junior English classes and reviewed Naviance with them. We will be sending a followup email to all students and parents with materials related to this lesson. Working with a BC admissions rep, Guidance also plans to host a college essay writing workshop for juniors. Once dates are finalized we will communicate that with students and families.

Additionally, junior families should plan to attend the following informational events this year:November 29, 2017 6:30pm - Admissions reps panelJanuary (date TBD) - Scholarship processFebruary 1, 2018 6pm - MEFA College Admissions SeminarMarch (date TBD) - course selection night/AP info nightIn addition, college reps visit at lunch and the schedule is available online as well as in Naviance. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to meet with various schools on an informal basis or get more information about specific schools and programs. All students are invited to visit the tables.

This year we are working with Revolution Prep and the DHS football team to offer a practice SAT and ACT followed by workshop hosted by Revolution Prep. The flyer is in the newsletter and has also been emailed out so students can sign up for this wonderful opportunity.

Information for sophomores:In November, Guidance Counselors will be visiting the sophomore science classes to give an introduction to Naviance and to help guide students through a career exploration exercise. More information will be available in the coming weeks.

PSAT scores: According to Collegeboard, PSAT scores will be available to those students who took then in October beginning on December 11, 2017.

Communication with Guidance:Please note that counselors are busy meeting with students and families during the day. Emails and phone calls will be returned within 24-48 hours. We appreciate your patience as this is a very busy time in Guidance. Remember that if it is an emergency please do not use email as this often is not checked until the end of the day. If a student is having trouble getting an appointment with a counselor, they should speak directly with that counselor so a time can be found.

Upcoming ACT/SAT: (Dec 2 – SAT at DHS) (Dec 9 – ACT at DHS ) (Feb 10 – ACT at DHS)(Mar 10 – SAT at DHS ) (Apr 14 – ACT NOT hosted at DHS ) (May 5 – SAT at DHS )

(Jun 2 – SAT NOT hosted at DHS) (Jun 9 – ACT)
