Documentary The far eastern part of Siberia is a huge area, but so remote that even its name is questionable: should it be called Siberia, Manchuria or Heilongjiang, in Russian or in Chinese? The border between Russia and China is marked by the River Amur, called Heilongjiang by the Chinese – Black Dragon River. More and more Chinese are crossing the Amur to settle in Siberia. In the 16th Century the area was under Chinese rule. In the 19th Century, eastern Siberia was part of Russia. Today it’s once again becoming a pawn in the geopolitical interests of Putin’s Russia and Xi Jinping’s China. The need for land for the 150 million Chinese in the region is vast: China has ten times the population of Russia but only possesses 7% of the world’s agricultural land, whereas Russia possesses 11%. The demographic pressure in China and the sparse population on the Russian side mean that the border is de facto moving northwards. China cares about agricultural land and energy, Russia about clearly defined borders. Using selected archive footage and expert opinions, this documentary illuminates the geopolitical background and potential for conflict between the two superpowers.

Documentary

DW (English) | SAT 2017-07-01 2/98

With the birth of the knowledge society, higher education is booming. There were 13 million university students in 1960. By 2015, their ranks had swollen to nearly 200 million. The number of students attending university is exploding around the world, creating a gigantic global market. It's a simple fact: Institutes of higher learning are booming and it’s all about money. Universities now operate in the world’s most competitive knowledge economy, waging a ferocious battle to attract the brightest minds from around the globe. Our film shows how money and politics intermingle and looks at the deep cultural divide between the lucrative Anglo-Saxon funding model and the European one. We also chart the rise of a new class of over-educated and over-indebted workers. Who really benefits from this heightened global competition? Just how much debt should students take on? What is the real price for our societies? And which nations will end up with the best researchers and students and thus the tools for economic success?

Documentary Music constructed from everyday sounds is enjoying a new boom. It began in the late 1940s with musique concrète and experiments by sound pioneers such as Pierre Schaeffer, Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Cage. Later, musicians such as Blixa Bargeld and Jean-Michel Jarre took up the torch and successfully transplanted it into in pop and rock music. Music constructed from everyday sounds has enjoyed great success in pop and rock music. Our film follows the French duo KIZ as they chart this music from its beginnings to the present day. Who are today's sound artists? Where do they get their inspiration? And how have they developed their art? Our explorers visit musicians from different generations, both established artists and newcomers. They are at home in a variety of styles – from pop and jazz to noise and electronic music using fascinating sound installations. KIZ's first port of call is London, where they meet multi-instrumentalist Cosmo Sheldrake who uses a recording device and a laptop to capture the sounds around him for his often humorous work. Matthew Herbert followed the life of a pig from birth to death and made a whole album from the noises he recorded. Then we head via Paris and Berlin to New York. And pioneers of experimental electronics like Blixa Bargeld of Einstürzende Neubauten and Jean-Michel Jarre show us how to get the best out of noise and voices.

21:30 Helmut Kohl – A European Patriot

Documentary Helmut Kohl played a crucial role in German reunification. His commitment to European integration was rewarded with an honorary citizenship of Europe. Following his death, the EU is now honoring him with a memorial service - the first in its history. Helmut Kohl was initially underestimated - but went on to head the Christian Democratic Party for a quarter of a century. His vision of Europe had a decisive impact on his political life. A scandal concerning secret political donations, however, later led to a spectacular fall from grace. This documentary looks at the inner workings of Kohl’s system of power, with colleagues and confidantes assessing his achievements. It also includes rare footage from the former chancellor’s personal life. To mark the memorial ceremony being held in his honor in Strasbourg, Deutsche Welle is showing the documentary “Helmut Kohl - A European Patriot”.

Commemorating Helmut Kohl 23:30 2 + 4 + X – A Short History of German Reunifi cation

Documentary Barely 327 days lay between the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification on October 3, 1990. What many now take for granted was more exciting than any thriller when it was actually happening. The reunification of Germany was certainly not a foregone conclusion. The GDR had imploded and Chancellor Helmut Kohl took advantage of the situation with a 10-point program. The two German states negotiated the merger of East and West Germany with the four victorious powers of World War II - The United States, the Soviet Union, Great Britain and France. The result was the so-called "2 + 4 Treaty" that regulated the whole reunification process. Our report looks at the most important events. Prominent politicians such as the last East German foreign minister, Markus Meckel, Helmut Kohl's advisor Horst Teltschik and Élisabeth Guigou, Francois Mitterrand's advisor, talk about the events they experienced and helped to shape at first hand. Renowned international historians and journalists also give a comprehensive picture of a tumultuous time. And documents from British archives show how great the fear of a resurgent Germany really was.

Commemorating Helmut Kohl 01:00 DW News 01:03 Reporter – On Location 01:15 eSports – From Lonely Kid to Star of the Futu re

Documentary eSports – electronic sports – professional competition in video games, started as a niche market and have gone mainstream. eSports have been inexorably on the rise for many years and are becoming more and more popular, professional and lucrative in Germany. Already, the e-gaming industry is turning over more than 4 billion euros a year – way ahead of the Bundesliga’s 2.6 billion. Professional players, so-called pro-gamers, have long been able to live from eSports. They play for titles, sponsorship contracts and big money and are enthusiastically followed by a huge fan base. The world’s largest eSports event, "The International" in Seattle, saw more than 20 million dollars go in prize money in September 2016. Many Germans still think video games are only something for lonely and neglected children, but their assumption is wrong: video games are a real mass phenomenon. Almost half the German population plays digital games on computers, consoles or mobile phones and their bandwidth ranges from casual to hardcore gamers. We show why eSports could become part of Germany’s future: they are popular, financially attractive and a training for life in today's world.

09:15 Tricky Memory – How We Get Things Wrong Documentary Memories are anything but reliable: they can deceive, become blurred, or even disappear altogether. But scientists have managed to decipher many recall mechanisms and can now intervene to erase unpleasant memories, create artificial ones or even reconstruct ones that have been repressed. We take a journey deep inside our heads. From the first moments of life, the ability to remember is deceptive: Can we really remember our childhoods? Or are we experiencing "pseudo-memories," ones put together from photographs or the stories of relatives? Scientists know with increasing certainty that not only can memory be mistaken but it can also be the cause of new mistakes. We have always been aware of the unreliability of recall; what's new, however, is the realization that memory can be deliberately fabricated or manipulated without the subject even noticing it. Dozens of internationally renowned researchers have proven the existence of "fake" memories and are looking into the way these distortions actually function. Their latest discoveries are literally mind-blowing: Can you still trust your memory at all? If not, what does this mean for identity formation? How do you evaluate the testimony of witnesses in court? The film also shows how scientists can purposefully manipulate the memories of test animals, "injecting" mice with fake recollections or deleting traumatic events from their brains. Applying these techniques to humans could be an important step in the fight against memory loss and dementia.

Documentary

DW (English) | SUN 2017-07-02 7/98

The Zanzibar archipelago is a group of larger and smaller islands off the coast of Tanzania, named after the largest and best-known one. Many tourists dream of Zanzibar's glorious white sandy beaches, where everything happens more slowly. Even goods and people are often still transported today the way have been for centuries, on traditional dhows. The islands of the Zanzibar archipelago have been a place of promise and legend since Antiquity. For many, they still epitomize Arabian-African exoticism. The main island of the Zanzibar archipelago originally fell into the German colonial sphere of influence in the 19th century and later became a British protectorate. But in Zanzibar today, there is a big gap between myth and reality. The modern world encroached on the idyll long ago, the political situation is complex and poverty is a major problem. This film looks at everyday life on the Zanzibar archipelago. We see that dhow ferries continue to play a significant role in the transport of goods and people between the individual islands. The dhow has hardly changed in centuries playing the Indian Ocean.

Documentary Some call it a useful dowry of evolution, others a fault in the human genetic make-up: The old mortal sin Greed seems to be more ubiquitous than ever. Why cannot people ever get enough, where is this self-indulgence leading – and are there any ways out of this vicious circle of gratification? "People like to have a lot of stuff because it makes them the feeling of living forever," says American social psychologist Sheldon Solomon, who believes today's materialism and consumerism are will have disastrous consequences. Anyone who fails to satisfy his or her desires in this age of the Ego is deemed a loser. But with more than 7 billion people on the Earth, the ramifications of this excessive consumption of resources are already clear. Isn’t the deplorable state of our planet proof enough that "The Greed Program," which has made us crave possessions, status and power, is coming to an end? Or is the frenzied search for more and more still an indispensable part of our nature? We set off to look for the essence of greed. And we tell the stories of people who – whether as perpetrators or victims or even just as willing consumers – have become accomplices in a sea change in values.

08:30 Tomorrow Today – The Science Magazine 09:00 DW News 09:15 Ai Weiwei Drifting – Documentary

Ai Weiwei: Uncomfortable critic or one of the most brilliant artists of our time? Subject to government surveillance, detention and house arrest in China he moved to Berlin in 2015. Now he's taking Europe to task, protesting against, and devoting his work, to what he sees as its catastrophic refugee policies. A DW film team has been following him around the world for more than a year. A lonely rubber boat is drifting in the Aegean Sea between Turkey and Greece. In it, Ai Weiwei. He cannot swim. Is this performance art? "We are all refugees," he says. Ai Weiwei displays his solidarity with the refugees and goes to meet them in Greece, Turkey and Gaza, producing a major documentary on the way. His current works deal with the fate of refugees, turning their abandoned boats, life vests and discarded clothing into memorials. Flight and exile have been constant themes in his life. He is currently writing his memoirs, set for publication in 20 languages. His father, a well-known poet, fell into disfavor during Mao's Cultural Revolution and Ai Weiwei grew up in exile. As the Einstein Visiting Professor at Berlin's University of the Arts, he also sets his students project work on the refugee issue. But when Ai Weiwei imitated the photo of the dead refugee boy Alan Kurdi with his own body, many thought he was going too far. Was it sensationalism? Provocation? "Oh," he seemed to say, "so now you care?" Ai Weiwei recognizes no boundaries. Our film gets close to him and gives us an insight into his artistic work as well as his private life – with his mother in Beijing, with his son and partner in Berlin and in moments never before shown on film. But a lot about him remains a riddle. Just who exactly is Ai Weiwei?

Documentary For years, the world’s central banks have been pursuing a policy of cheap money. The first and foremost is the ECB (European Central Bank), which buys bad stocks and bonds to save banks, tries to fuel economic growth and props up states that are in debt. But what relieves state budgets to the tune of hundreds of billions annoys savers: interest rates are close to zero. The fiscal policies of the central banks are causing a uncontrolled global deluge of money. Experts are warning of new bubbles. In real estate, for example: it’s not just in German cities that prices are shooting up. In London, a one-bed apartment can easily cost more than a million euros. More and more money is moving away from the real economy and into the speculative field. Highly complex financial bets are taking place in the global casino – gambling without checks and balances. The winners are set from the start: in Germany and around the world, the rich just get richer. Professor Max Otte says: "This flood of money has caused a dangerous redistribution. Those who have, get more." But with low interest rates, any money in savings accounts just melts away. Those with debts can be happy. But big companies that want to swallow up others are also happy: they can borrow cheap money for their acquisitions. Coupled with the liberalization of the financial markets, the money deals

have become detached from the real economy. But it’s not just the banks that need a constant source of new, cheap money today. So do states. They need it to keep a grip on their mountains of debt. It’s a kind of snowball system. What happens to our money? Is a new crisis looming? The film The Money Deluge casts a new and surprising light on our money in these times of zero interest rates.

What is it like to grow up as the son or daughter of a dictator or war criminal? As the child of someone with absolute power, a ruthless despot ? The son of Idi Amin of Uganda perhaps? The daughter of the Cuba’s Fidel Castro, or the late Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, or the niece of Nazi war criminal Hermann Göring? This documentary takes an honest look at unusual childhoods. When does it begin to sink in that your father or uncle is, or was, a cruel and ruthless despot? How do you bear the stigma? And how do you accept responsibility for their deeds? Alina Fernández experienced her father Fidel Castro as an intelligent but narcissistic man. She rebelled and finally fled Cuba. Jaffar Amin is seeking reconciliation with his father, the ruthless Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. Bettina Göring knows that she can only continue to live if she forgives the unforgiveable. Lucia Pinochet also sees both the brutal side of her father as well as the family man. This documentary gives an intimate insight into the lives of dictators’ children.

Tai – The Last Jungle, Ivory Coast Located in the southwest of the Ivory Coast, the "Taï" national park covers an area of more than 300,000 hectares, mainly made of dense rainforest. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1982. A rain forest buffer zone on the edge of the protected area has also been created to protect the actual park itself. The tropical rainforests are all that is left of the jungles that covered most of West Africa before the arrival of the Europeans. Previously, people lived from the forest, but today they live with it. Some of the park rangers were poachers before they became gamekeepers.

"People like to have a lot of stuff because it makes them the feeling of living forever," says American social psychologist Sheldon Solomon, who believes today's materialism and consumerism will have disastrous consequences.

This documentary tells the extraordinary story of a boy who overcame great obstacles to fulfill a dream. William Kamkwamba grew up on a farm in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world. At the age of 14, he built a windmill from scrap to generate electricity. In doing so, he changed the lives of the people in his village forever – and his own. William grew up without electricity and hot running water in a small village in Mastala, where he and his six sisters worked on tobacco plantations. Every day was just a battle to survive.

DW (English) | THU 2017-07-06 20/98

When William was 13, there was a heavy downpour that lasted for a week. Large parts of the country were flooded, houses washed away, cattle drowned and a famine broke out. When he had to leave school because his family could not pay the fees, there was little hope things might change. But he spent his time in the village library. There were few books there, but one was to change his life and that of his whole village forever. In a book titled "Using Energy," he found a picture of a windmill. So he began to build one. This was the beginning of an heroic African story: William was invited as a TED speaker, was able to finish his education at a top school in South Africa and study in the USA. He became a media sensation, wrote a book about his life and went on a world tour. Our film charts all his achievements, but also shows how he has kept his feet on the ground. Footage of his village and parents' house are interwoven with scenes from his new life in America.

Documentary Norway has the world's most humane high-security gaol, the Halden prison. The focus there is not on imprisonment itself but above all on the reintegration of offenders into society. Halden’s deputy governor has taken on a difficult mission: he wants to reform the infamous Attica prison in the United States.

DW (English) | FRI 2017-07-07 22/98

Halden prison aims to make a better person out of every inmate. The prisoners live in a pleasant environment and can make use of a wide range of facilities from pottery courses to a well-equipped music studio. The idea is that they should be able to live a normal life when they have served their terms. Jan Strømnes, Halden's deputy governor, is convinced that this system will work anywhere – even in one of the world's most notorious prisons, Attica State Prison in New York State. The American prison system focuses on punishment, not rehabilitation, which leads to widespread aggression and violence in its prisons and high rates of recidivism outside. So would the staff and prisoners in Attica be able to embrace the Norwegian concept of dialogue and humaneness? And what is the point of a prison sentence in the first place: to punish the convicts or give them a chance to change their own lives?

What happens when a family takes in a refugee who’s also a minor? Lennart is 18 and is just preparing for his finals in high school in Bremerhaven. He has spent a long time discussing the refugee crisis with his mother Katrin and his stepfather Robert. But he’s had enough of talking and wants to actually do something. He has persuaded his parents to take in 15-year-old Barzan from Syria. Barzan is shy. At first he speaks neither English nor German. Nevertheless Barzan, Lennart and his parents bond and quickly get to know each other. But Barzan can’t forget his home; he misses his friends and family more and more. Lennart recognizes how difficult it is to integrate a young Syrian refugee in Germany without his parents. Lennart wants to be a good brother to Barzan. Then Lennart’s sister returns from her year abroad – a difficult situation for Barzan, who’s the same age as her. The author Nikolas Migut accompanied Lennart and Barzan for half a year. The result is a calm and very personal report about the balancing act between success and failure when it comes to integrating an underage refugee without his parents. Lennart asks some very honest questions and observes and comments from his perspective.

Documentary 19:00 DW News 19:15 A Natural History of Laughter – Documentary

Laughing is an important part of our lives – perhaps even the fundamental basis of human nature. But since when has mankind been laughing? And are humans the only species that can laugh? Apart from the generally accepted recognition that humor is the best medicine little is known about laughter. Philosophers and scientists such as Aristotle, Kant, Darwin and Freud all underlined the importance of laughter. In the US, Robert Provine, a neurologist and psychologist at the University of Maryland, has dedicated his career to researching human laughter and investigating what mechanisms it triggers in the brain. Like other spontaneous behavior, laughter is difficult to study in a laboratory environment. Half of all test subjects cannot laugh on command, but at the same time laughter is immensely contagious. Provine says laughter has a clear sound signature: there is no specific vowel defining laughter, but similar vowels together form a laugh: "ha-ha-ha" or "ho-ho-ho." In fact, humans were not the first creatures that could laugh. Dutch behavioral scientist Jan Van Hooff, another pioneer of "laughter research," has analyzed the laughter of primates. Bonobos, chimpanzees and orangutans laugh heartily, especially when they are tickled. The fact that laughter occurs in different species suggests that it has a strong genetic and neurophysiological basis. So why can’t we tickle ourselves? Why is laughter contagious? Why is laughter actually healthy? A film about how we laugh – and why.

19:15 The Painter Franz Xaver Winterhalter – Docume ntary This documentary tells the fascinating story of Franz Xaver Winterhalter, a farmer’s boy from the Black Forest who went out into the world to conquer the royal houses of Europe as a painter. But hardly anyone today remembers his name, although many know his works. Winterhalter’s portrait of the Austrian empress Sissi is still a popular reprint. Franz Xaver Winterhalter was born in 1805. He travelled constantly from one royal palace to the next. He was called 'Winterchen' – 'little Winter' – by the royals because of his diminutive stature. Winterhalter not only painted a portrait of Elisabeth, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, who was better known as Sissi, he also painted Queen Victoria of England, the queen of Spain, the Prussian royal couple, and the Tsar and Tsarina of Russia – the list of monarchs and nobles could go on and on. Filmmaker and art historian Grit Lederer has followed Winterhalter’s footsteps around Europe. Exclusive footage from Buckingham Palace shows how highly esteemed the paintings of the German painter still are: his large-format portraits of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert are on show in the atrium of Buckingham Palace, in the Marble Hall. His paintings can also be found in the palaces of Versailles and Compiègne. Lederer was also given exclusive access to Langenstein Palace on Lake Constance, the stately home of Count Christoph Douglas. His ancestors also had themselves and their children painted by Winterhalter.

Documentary Having a child is something the vast majority take for granted. But for one in ten couples, this desire remains unfulfilled. Modern medicine can help. Or could: for unlike many European countries, Germany imposes strict limits on reproductive medicine. As a result more and more German couples become 'baby tourists'. 38-year-old Sandra spent years longing to become pregnant. After countless visits to her doctor, hormonal therapies and surgery it was clear that her ovaries weren’t producing eggs anymore. It was a shock for Sandra and her husband, because in Germany – unlike many other European countries – embryo-protection law prohibits egg donation and surrogacy. But progress in reproductive medicine has overtaken German laws. As a result, an estimated 15,000 couples from Germany head to other countries every year because they want children. The original destinations were Spain, the Czech Republic, California and Ukraine, who all advertised egg donation and surrogate mothers. Since 2015 it has also been possible to receive donor eggs in Austria. This change had been preceded by an intense public debate on the matter- the sort of debate that is missing in Germany. Our film crew accompanies Sandra and her husband to Austria to receive treatment and talks to a German couple about their son, who was born with the help of a Californian surrogate

mother. A surrogate mother from Ukraine also explains why she makes her body available to childless couples. In addition a young woman who was conceived with the help of anonymous sperm donation talks about her feelings. Is something that’s medically possible also ethical if it helps couples to make their dream of children come true? Where are the red lines? Pamukkale – Natural Beauty and Ancient Hierapolis, Turkey The white terraces of Pamukkale are among Turkey’s greatest natural wonders. Thermal springs sprout from the rocks above a geological fault zone. As they seep through the limestone, they become enriched with minerals that solidify into calcareous sinter when they cool down on the surface. Pamukkale is located on several terraces at the foot of the Cokelez Mountains near the ancient city of Hierapolis, which in Greek means "The Holy City." Little is known about its history and origins. But one thing is certain: the city would never have emerged without the hot springs here. Originally founded in 1900 BC, Hierapolis became part of the Roman province of Asia in 133 BC, with an estimated 100,000 inhabitants. Marble capitals show how important Hierapolis was as the center of the Cybele cult, the worship of the Great Mother Earth, and the thermal water was also valued for its healing properties.

Documentary For six years, a cameraman followed the work of the UN Special Envoy for Syria. The result is a detailed examination of the background to the civil war. From Geneva via Damascus, Moscow to New York, the documentary gives insights into the bitterest diplomatic battle of the 21st Century, which has ultimately left the Syrian people alone to their fate. The Syrian people have paid the price for the failure of international diplomacy in the Syrian civil war. Kofi Annan, Lakhdar Brahimi and Staffan de Mistura, who represent the international community as UN Special Envoys for Syria, tried to mediate between the warring parties and get them back to the negotiating table. But all three envoys failed. The futility of this UN mission is evident from the siege of the eastern part of Aleppo and the massive bombardment that the Assad regime and its Russian allies employed to retake Syria’s second-largest city. Diplomacy also failed to either mitigate the humanitarian catastrophe or prevent war crimes committed in the name of the fight against terrorism. Six years of fighting, hundreds of thousands of deaths and twelve million displaced people leave little doubt that the international security system that the UN embodies does not work. Despite some 15 agencies and thousands of employees on the ground and a budget of several billion euros, the UN’s mediation efforts Syria have neither brought peace nor were they able to alleviate the suffering of the population and prevent the greatest refugee crisis since the Second World War – when the United Nations itself was founded.

Historic Tallinn – The Old Hanseatic Port of Reval, Estonia The north-eastern point of the powerful Hanseatic League was the old trading town Reval, which is today the Estonian capital, Tallinn. Reval had a uniquely privileged position in the trade between Western Europe and the Russian Empire. All goods passing through had to be stacked in front of the city gates, and Reval’s merchants profited from the trade. The city soon became a fortress, reinforced with 35 towers. Riga held onto its the trade monopoly for centuries: furs, grain and wax were exchanged for cloth and salt. Cheap grain was hoarded in its warehouses in autumn and then sold at great profit in the lean spring months. Although Reval later submitted to Russian rule, it still retained its trading privileges -another victory for the magnificent city and its merchants.

Laura Mvula 02:00 DW News 02:03 The Day – News in Review 02:30 The Sweet Temptations of the Sugar Lobby – Do cumentary

It’s in soft drinks and sweets but it’s also hidden in large quantities in ready meals and supposedly healthy foods: sugar. The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued warnings that we’re consuming too much sugar and we’re making ourselves increasingly sick as a result. But the sugar and food lobby is powerful. How can consumers protect themselves? Obesity and type-2 diabetes along with their consequences cost the German health and pension funds more than 20 billion euros a year. And yet many foods are full of sugar. The reason is that sugar’s cheap and a good carrier of flavor. And the issue has moved on from the well-known sugar we all have in our pantries. This issue now also affects other sweetening agents that hide behind many different names. That’s why it’s often tricky for consumers to determine how much sugar a product contains. Even allegedly healthy foods contain a lot of sugar – such as fruit yogurts. On average children and teenagers eat three times the amount of sugar recommended by the WHO. Babies are also conditioned with sweetened baby puree. We can actually become addicted: tasty food causes our brain to release happy hormones. Disastrously, foods with a high sugar content cause our brains to release far more of the body’s ‘drugs’ than, say, vegetables. That means sweet foods make us happy. And the good feeling we get as a result is something we want to experience over and over again. It’s the start of a vicious circle – we eat more and more sugar. The question is: can we really lay the blame at the feet of the food industry? Where does personal responsibility begin? When reading ingredients, consumers should surely realize what they’re ingesting? Or does the food industry cleverly hide the sugar content?

Documentary What’s it like to live without running water? In Peru’s sprawling capital, Lima, this is the everyday reality for 1.5 million children and adults, forced to pay up to a week’s salary for just one day’s water. And the problem isn’t confined to the capital, across the country, the shortage of water is putting lives in danger and provoking conflict, as it displaces communities and threatens their agricultural livelihoods. Climate change is partly to blame, but in this film we explore how European consumers are making this crisis worse. The fruit and vegetables – avocados, asparagus and exotic fruits – that end up on our supermarket shelves are literally sucking Peru’s land dry. In Lima we meet families struggling to live without one of life’s basic necessities. With only a few liters of water a week, their children’s health is at risk, and they’re at the mercy of unscrupulous businessmen, whose water trucks sell allegedly contaminated water at inflated prices. For others, the situation is even bleaker – we meet people without access to any water at all, who are forced to beg their neighbors every day for enough to wash and cook with. But there are no easy answers to the deepening crisis. Peru’s industries have brought jobs, wealth and even women’s empowerment to vast areas that used to be desperately poor. This film goes right to the heart of the water crisis – showing how society’s poorest are caught in the middle of a struggle between business, climate change and international politics.

19:00 DW News 19:15 Music Matters – The Healing Powers of Sound

Documentary What healing powers does music have? Can sound help to cure illness? It seems music does have healing potential and great importance is placed on it, especially in oriental cultures. But here in the Western world the idea faces more skepticism. But that seems to be changing. Sound cannot heal a serious illness it seems but even Western medicine is accepting that the body and soul go hand in hand if a cure is to succeed in an optimal way. In Turkey, music has played an essential role in the world of medicine for centuries. In Japan, the soothing sound of a flute is said to have healing properties while here in Europe we discuss which composer is best heard when it comes to healing the sick: Bach, Schubert or Mozart? This documentary is a film about intense listening, sounds that maybe have never been heard before and the subtle perception of quiet shades of music.

Documentary India is a country of incredible stories, both cheerful ones and dark ones, and women are writing the most exciting of them. In spite of discrimination and violence, they are boxing their way to the front, sometimes literally – as ghetto boxers or hip-hop singers. Many Indian women want the 21st Century to be the century of women and are courageously fighting towards that goal. India impresses everyone with its colors and the women who wear them. Their stories are just as colorful as their clothes, sometimes bright and cheerful, sometimes dark and oppressive, other times garish and wild. There’s virtually no other country on Earth where the gap between tradition and modernity is greater. 18-year-old Ajmira is a boxer in Kolkata. She and the other girls training in her club don’t want to be victims anymore. The youngest have only just started going to school. They’re preparing for life in a part of Kolkata where rape is an everyday occurrence. A "dalit," a member of India’s lowest caste, the 'Untouchables', is reaching for the stars. She wants to become a hip-hop singer and take down the caste system in the process. Many also think the world’s oldest mother is quite outrageous. She lives in Amritsar in northern India and has had a son at the age of 70 thanks to a donor egg. In the state of Jharkhand in eastern India women are still beaten or stoned to death for alleged witchcraft. Some villages seem abandoned. The patterns are reminiscent of medieval witch trials in Europe. In both cases, the triggers were and are

Segovia – The Setting for Power Games, Spain Segovia’s old center is rich in architectural history. Its outstanding landmarks include the Roman aqueduct and the 16th Century late-Gothic cathedral – symbols of power. This film takes a look at the decisive chapters of the city’s past. These include the Roman era, when slaves used twenty thousand tons of granite without the help of cement to construct the city’s aqueduct for the emperor Trajan, and the 15th century, when Princess Isabella seized the opportunity of her husband’s absence to have herself crowned Queen of Castile and Leon. Our documentary shows how Segovia played key roles in both Roman and Spanish history.

Documentary The pro-European Maidan revolution in Ukraine toppled President Viktor Yanukovych. Corruption is still widespread and the old oligarchs still pull the strings. But a new creative scene is keeping the Maidan spirit alive. Three years on many of the revolutionaries are disappointed. Despite pressure from the EU and Washington, Ukrainian leaders refuse to destroy old structures. The conflict in eastern Ukraine with rebels backed by Moscow is hindering Ukraine’s move towards the west. But the spirit of Maidan lives on in creative young people, especially in the capital Kyiv. These musicians, fashion designers and artists could radically change post-Soviet Ukraine. Reporter Frank Hofmann spent the summer accompanying some of these young creative minds who are still living the Maidan dream.

21:15 Treasures of the World – Heritage of Mankind Flemish Béguinages – Of Prayer, Life and Work, Belg ium In the 13th Century, a movement that had mainly begun amongst women spread throughout Europe. It held that values such as modesty, solidarity and religious sincerity should determine women’s lives. Thus the Beguine movement was born. The Beguines were a lay religious organization. Each Beguine chapter was autonomous and could elect its own superior: the "Grande Dame". Unlike nuns, they took no vows in perpetuity and could leave at any time. Of course, their independence went too far for the church and at times the movement was accused of heresy or even banned. The film takes three Beguinages in Flanders to show how they lived and worked as self-styled "Housekeepers of God." They earned their living by washing and bleaching, making wool tapestries and lace. They devoted themselves to caring for the poor and took care of orphans. The Beguine chapter in Lier, one of the most beautiful in Flanders, is now a big tourist attraction. The most famous, "Ten Wijngarde" in the old Hanseatic city of Bruges, is today a Benedictine monastery. The most recent, "St. Amantsberg" in Ghent, dates from the end of the last century – a sign of how long the Beguine movement has survived in Flanders.

Documentary In early October 1957, the Soviet satellite "Sputnik" ushered in a new, futuristic age. For the next ten years, the future and its favorite setting, space, were more in vogue than ever before. This documentary takes a wry look into the fantastic future of the 1960s – one that is already deep in the past. On October 5, 1957, a radio signal sent America into profound shock and enthralled the world. The persistant beep of the Russian satellite "Sputnik 1" spread like wildfire around the globe. The Soviet Union had put the first ever man-made satellite into orbit around the Earth. The space age had begun. In the coming decade, the future – and its favorite setting, space – was in fashion like never before. Pneumatic space heroines appeared in science fiction comics and films and futuristic sounds conquered the dance floors. In September 1966, the future also began on German television: The launch of the seven-part science fiction series "Space Patrol – The Fantastic Adventures of the Orion Spaceship" made TV history. In short, the future had begun and was promising great things. Our documentary looks back at this utopian time between "Sputnik" and the US moon landing. How did human beings see the future – our present – half a century ago? And how did culture reflect this boundless enthusiasm for technology and optimistic belief in the future?

Lions have never fared as badly as they are doing today. A team of international scientists has investigated Africa’s lion population, particularly in the Ngorongo Conservation Area in Tanzania. The results are alarming. Is the king of the beasts facing extinction? Although lions can still find suitable habitats in the conservation area, they also encounter many problems. It’s particularly difficult for lions to survive in areas inhabited by humans. "That’s led to a significant decrease in the lion population," says Philipp Henschel, a German zoologist working for the organization Panthera, which is dedicated to protecting wild members of the cat family. "Since the mid-20th Century, the number of lions has dropped by around 90 percent. We believe that today there are only around 20,000 lions living in the wild," he says. Experts estimate that these animals now only occur in around 8 percent of their original territories – a dramatic development that has largely gone unnoticed to date. There are various reasons for this. To meet the needs of the constantly growing human population, large areas of wilderness are being transformed into agricultural land. Many prides of lions are separated from each other as a result and are now threatened by in-breeding. Even in places where lions still have their original habitat, they often struggle to find food. On the one hand, humans hunt the lions’ natural prey for their own pots, on the other hand, their cattle and goat herds compete with their wild counterparts. That often leaves lions with no choice but to kill livestock, which in turn means that villagers kill them out of retaliation or pre-emptively. The Swedish lion expert Ingela Jansson has been studying the Ngorongo Conservation Area in Tanzania to see how lions cope with living close to humans and their livestock. She’s particularly worried about one pride where the male was killed by humans. Are the young still alive?

Rola El-Halabi, born in Lebanon and two-time world champion woman boxer for Germany, survived her most severe assault in 2011, not in the ring but in her own family: her step-father shot her in the hands and knees to end her career as a boxer. But she didn’t give up. Instead she fought her way back into the ring with an iron will and regained control of her destiny. Rola El-Halabi came to Germany as a one-year-old in 1986 when her parents fled the civil war in Lebanon. A short while later, her father left his wife and children and returned to his home country. Rola’s mother soon met Hicham ‘Roy’ El-Halabi, a Lebanese man, whom she married. Rola was eight when her step-father took her to Thai boxing events. The little girl showed a great talent for boxing, something that is more of a man’s world than a woman’s, and she made her first appearance in the ring when she was just 14. It was the start of a meteoric career. Her step-father became her manager and she soon managed the leap from the amateur to the professional league. She was just nineteen at her first world championship fight. But when she was 25, she met her future husband. Her stepfather told her to stop seeing him so she went against him for the first time in her life and ditched him as her manager. Before her next fight, on 1 April 2011, Roy entered Rola’s changing room armed with a gun and shot at her hands, knees and feet. It took Rola two years before she could walk properly again, but eventually she made it back into the boxing ring. Today Rola and Kosta are married. They have a daughter and run a sports academy in Ulm.

In the midst of the Cold War, the Vietnam conflict triggered a massive wave of international protest. It also marked the detonation of an antimilitarist counterculture experimenting with drugs and lifestyles in all areas of pop production. Comics, antiwar films and singer-songwriters inspired young people around the world. Since the mid-20th century, pop culture has been in the vanguard of profound social change. In Germany, accompanied by the pianos and guitars of the songwriters, pop culture pacifism joined forces with the peace movement’s "No More War” slogans – fueling mass demonstrations directed at NATO’s "Dual Track Decision”. Water breaks the stone! Petting instead of Pershing! Nonviolent resistance in accordance with Gandhi’s teachings and slogans from the civil disobedience inspired the pickets at nuclear missile bases in Germany. Writers such as Ken Follett, Alexis Jenni and Hanif Kureishi look back at those years. But it’s the views of a younger generation of musicians on the apparently long lost movement that bring the timeliness and relevance of "Peace ‘n’ Pop” into sharp relief.

Documentary The small Himalayan kingdom Bhutan ascribes a greater importance to happiness than any other country on Earth. It doesn’t measure general wellbeing just by its GDP, but also by its Gross National Happiness. But the happiness index published by the United Nations ironically places Bhutan a mere 84th. This documentary searches for answers to the question: what makes us happy? The Gross National Happiness concept isn’t the only thing that makes Bhutan special: there are no traffic lights here, no advertising posters, no plastic bags and, up until a few years ago, no television. But the country’s gradually opening up to tourists and investors. Its economy is among the fastest-growing in the world; and yet a large portion of the population still live below the poverty line. Maybe that’s depressing the citizens’ happiness? How is globalization impacting the attitude towards life in Bhutan? And what’s this self-proclaimed principle of happiness even about? Filmmaker Markus Spieker looked for answers to these questions on a journey through this picturesque country. And he found them in encounters with farmers and pop stars, monks and tree planters as well as trained happiness scientists.

Arles – Stones of Rome and Strokes of van Gogh, Fra nce Ancient Roman civilization and its legacy have left their mark more on Arles than almost any other city. Its oldest buildings date from the first century B.C. It was the second-largest city in the Roman Empire. Half a century later, Arles developed into a religious center. Arles is also closely associated with Vincent van Gogh. He settled in Arles in February 1888. It was here that he created his best-known works. It was also in Arles that van Gogh and Paul Gauguin wanted to found an artists' community. But the two painters’ plans were put to an end when van Gogh suffered a nervous breakdown. The painter described his views of the town and its residents in many of the letters he wrote to his brother Theo.

Documentary Arno Schmidt was the rebel of the German literary landscape, a pioneer of razor-sharp language. In the postwar years, his stories were seen as taboo-breaking. His themes were flight, expulsion and an accounting with Adenauer’s policies. His work is unique in the recent history of German literature in its radicalism. Arno Schmidt was a pioneer of language: recalcitrant, rebellious, obsessed. But today his extensive body of work has been overshadowed by just one of his books: the monumental novel "Zettel's Dream" from1970. In the tradition of James Joyce, he describes the events of a single summer day in a heathland village. "Zettel's Dream" is a complex work that earned its author cult status, but also a reputation as an eccentric and loner. This portrait sketches out Schmidt’s literary career and looks most closely at the post-war years when, as displaced persons, Schmidt and his wife Alice found a new home in the small village of Heidedorf Bargfeld. His stories constantly return to his experiences of war, flight and expulsion. But he also radically criticized the restorationist tendencies of the Adenauer era in a language that was taboo at the time.

Monticello – A Concrete Utopia, USA Thomas Jefferson, third president of the United States of America, wanted the Declaration of Independence to guarantee the right to freedom and self-determination to all men. He decided a new style of architecture should be the visible representation of these rights. Himself an architect, Jefferson set out to create the prototype of this new architecture at Monticello, his plantation in West Virginia. He spent half of his life working on the neoclassical main house and turning it into the concrete utopia of a committed Enlightenment thinker.

Flight, immigration, the move from rural to urban areas and other forms of the ‘new migration’ confront us with great challenges. But internationally acclaimed migration expert Doug Saunders is optimistic. His history of migration in Europe shows that it can bring great opportunities for everyone. We join him on a trip to Istanbul, London, Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin. 'Arrival City' is the term migration expert Doug Saunders uses for the title of his book: a place where migrants first settle in search of a better future for their children. To find out how integration works, and why it fails so miserably in some places, Saunders and director Jörg Daniel Hissen visited Istanbul, London, Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin. Flight, immigration, the move from rural to urban areas and other forms of the "new Migration" are immense challenges to modern societies. Cultural differences, language problems and housing are just a few of the hurdles that the newcomers have to contend with in the "arrival cities." These are often parts of towns that make the headlines as problem districts, and the residents are often hostile to outsiders. But Doug Saunders is optimistic. His research on migration in Europe shows that immigration is an opportunity for migrants and native populations alike as long as the migrants are provided with conditions that allow them to play an active role. Civil rights, educational opportunities and social mobility are important factors in successful integration. If the "arrival cities" allow the incomers to set up small businesses and improve their circumstances, at least for the second generation, they often develop into hip neighborhoods and popular residential areas for the middle class. This documentary connects the dots between the personal stories of individual migrants and the

town planning and political initiatives that are needed if the arrival regions are to benefit from migration.

Culture Club 02:00 DW News 02:03 The Day – News in Review 02:30 Humans: a Discontinued Line? – When Will Mach ines Take Over?

Documentary Machines are cleverer and faster than humans may sound like science fiction, but scientists all around the world are working on making this scenario come true. Should the breakthrough in the area of AI – artificial intelligence – succeed, and there is a lot of evidence suggesting it will, then our lives will change radically. But the question is: for better or for worse? Scientists are working hard on a form of artificial intelligence deserving of the name. And they’re making rapid progress, supported by the billions invested by major high-tech companies and the military. Is this a danger? Filmmaker Christiane Schwarz compares dreams with facts and asks: how far have the scientists got? Whom do they serve and what goals are they pursuing? Computers can already trick people into believing they’re communicating with another human being. But are machines capable of learning? Can they understand complex associations? The search for answers takes the author from carmakers in Germany to the birthplace of robotics in Japan and weapons developers in Dubai. This documentary about clever robots isn’t a journey into fictional worlds of the future – it’s a trip through the here and now.

Documentary 19:00 DW News 19:15 War Waste – A Ticking Bomb

Documentary It’s a ticking bomb for the environment: After the end of the Second World War, the Allies sank their surplus munitions off the coasts of Europe – 1.6 million tons in German waters alone. And in addition to conventional explosives, there are also highly toxic substances on the seabed, including Sarin, a mustard gas containing arsenic. After 1945, the Allies disposed of their surplus munitions off the coasts of Europe. Other countries where wars have occurred – especially Vietnam – face the same problem. It is still not really clear how much environmental damage has actually been caused in those countries. The documentary shows in an astonishing manner how much military pollution the wars of the 20th Century have left behind. Although it could create enormous problems for humans and the environment, the problem has yet to be fully scientifically investigated.

Wacken Metal Battle 19:00 DW News 19:15 Peace 'n' Pop: 1979-2015 – Peace and Popular Culture from the 1980s to Today

Documentary The years between the 1980s and the 2000s saw a complete political and cultural shake-up. The second part of our documentary "Peace 'n' Pop" traces the pop-cultural reactions to a confusing world of conflict. The Falklands War in 1982 united a Britain shattered by economic upheaval in a wave of nationalism. Musicians rebelled in vain. The Berlin Wall fell and the Cold War ended. The Love Parade celebrated a final peace festival. The war in Kosovo left the German peace movement paralyzed. And after 9/11, the "War on Terror” kept the world on tenterhooks. "Peace ‘n’ Pop" traces pop-culture reactions to an increasingly complex world of war. Skeptical of political and economic systems, artists tried to promote ideals of peace and understanding. But even as they tried to leave the bold old sentiments far behind themselves, they still couldn’t get away from "Love, Peace and Happiness." What answers to war, or to the deaths of thousand of refugees in the Mediterranean can musicians come up with? Can music help you understand a world driven by conflict?
