A focus on health

Experts from the Animal Health Trust (AHT) scientific and veteri-nary teams will be on hand each day to offer advice and answer queries from dog owners, and scientists from the charity’s inherited disease, can-cer and seasonal canine illness (SCI) research groups will also be present, supported by clinicians working in the Kennel Club Cancer Centre at the AHT.

The Trust’s genetic services team will also be available to discuss canine DNA testing for hereditary diseases, DNA profiling and parentage verifi-cation.

The KC stressed again this year that its key priority is to promote the health and wellbeing of dogs. Since 2009 it has committed £1.2 million to researching inherited diseases and creating health tests at the KC Genetics Centre at the AHT, and it has also loaned the AHT £1.5m for its Cancer Centre, where vital research will take place to prevent and treat canine cancer.

Genetic healthOther research undertaken at the

AHT has enabled the development of the online tool Mate Select ser-vice, which helps breeders to make more informed breeding decisions to ensure the future health of their breeds. People can find out more about this work at the  ‘Breeding for the Future’ stand at Crufts in hall 3/56.

“In addition to working to improve the genetic health of dogs the KC is committed to ensuring that dogs do not suffer ill health as a result of exag-gerated conformation,” said spokes-man Caroline Kisko on Tuesday. “To this end the KC reviewed all breed Standards with the veterinary profes-sion and introduced veterinary checks at dog shows to this end. The intro-duction of breed health co-ordinators also helps to ensure that the KC and breeders can work together to most effectively address health issues.”

Mrs Kisko said the KC remained concerned that too many breeders outside its influence did not make use of the information and tools which are now available for breeding health-ier puppies, and are giving the large number of responsible breeders a bad reputation as a result.

“The Assured Breeder Scheme continues to be the centre of the KC’s efforts to raise the standards of breed-ing and to educate puppy buyers,” she said.

The collaboration between the KC and the AHT has been a great suc-cess, and it is a partnership the AHT hopes will continue. Its deputy chief executive Dr Mark Vaudin was keen to emphasise how much progress had been made in certain health areas over recent years, particularly since the inception of the KC Genetics Centre.

“We are very excited about the col-laboration between us and the KC and the fact that we can use our combined knowledge and expertise to help dog health and welfare,” he said. “A large number of tests has emerged in recent years such as Mate Select, and thanks to KC funding we can continue our work and increase speed to find things to help dogs.

“The KC has also helped fund our investigation into seasonal canine ill-ness, which has been affecting dogs in certain areas of the country each autumn.”

The AHT’s presence at Crufts in terms of offering relevant advice and support to dog owners has grown sig-nificantly in the last few years.

“This year we have the largest pres-ence ever – 40 vets, scientists and other personnel over the four days to answer questions and give advice,” Dr Vaudin said. “This echoes the number of initiatives currently going on in the world of canine welfare.

“It’s great that the KC has started to fund the science – they are making inroads, no question – and the collab-oration between us is a very positive thing all round.”

The time is now!

DOg WOrlD, based in Ashford, Kent, is Britain’s best selling weekly canine newspaper, and deals with all aspects of pedigree dogs.

It’s core readership consists of people involved in breeding, exhibiting and competing with dogs, not only in the show ring but in popular sports such as agility, obedience and gundog work. Each issue also contains so much information of interest to those who keep dogs purely as pets.

The paper contains the latest news concerning dogs from Britain and overseas, columns from an expert team of specialist writers, notes from the individual breeds, reports from dog shows at home and abroad, including the judges’ opinions of their winners, and details of forthcoming events plus features on specific breeds or dog clubs.

The highlight of the dog show year is Crufts held every March, and Dog World marks this with a large preview special, a colour supplement featuring the top winners of the previous year, and a comprehensive report issue giving full results from the show.

The prestigious glossy Dog World Annual is produced each December. The company also produces videos and television programmes under the dogworld.tv banner. For full details go to the website www.dogworld.co.uk.

Dog World runs, together with dog food firm ProPlan, the Pup of the Year competition with a final in February, and compiles and co-sponsors the Top Dog, Stud Dog and Brood Bitch points competitions.

The paper was founded in 1902 as The Illustrated Kennel News and changed to its present title in 1921. Subscriptions can be taken out for the print edition, digital edition or both.

January 23Rescue and RehomeRescue and RehomeIncreasing numbers of stray and abandoned dogs are being taken in by charity dog homes and breed rescues every year, a situation only made worse by European puppy traffickers flooding the UK pet market with unvaccinated and often mentally traumatised puppies. A vast proportion of the public still seem to be uneducated and poorly advised when it comes to choosing a puppy best suited to their lifestyle, leading to dogs being abandoned for sometimes the most trivial of reasons. We talk to those on the front line of rescue and rehoming, where kennel space and resources are a constant worry, and ask them what needs to be done to prevent this problem becoming a national crisis.

February 13Holiday and Travel – A Dog World guide to pet-friendly holidaysSo you are going on holiday and you want to take your dogs. Sounds like a better option than leaving them in kennels for two weeks. But having made the decision to include your beloved companions have you narrowed your choice of destination and doubled the amount of planning involved? We share the experiences and stories of dog owners who have embarked on a holiday both in the UK and abroad to find out some of the joys and pitfalls of travelling with your dog.

April 24Holistic therapiesA healthy dog is a happy dog, and it is our responsibility to ensure that a dog’s condition and wellbeing is maintained and any ailments or illnesses treated to the best of our ability. A holistic approach is becoming increasingly popular, using products and treatments that work in harmony with a dog’s natural digestive and immune system, and therapies that look at a dog’s health as a whole, both physiologically and psychologically. In this feature we examine these ideas, and discover how a holistic approach can help to cure ailments and improve the wellbeing of our dogs..
