Believe it or not, deciding on a yarn for Design Wars is the hardest, most difficult decision we have to make. I try to maintain a fairly democratic operation behind the scenes, but yarn choice is always a topic that receives an especially passionate array of opinions.

What makes matters worse is that Red Heart has such an impressive array of yarn fibers, weights, colors, and texture to choose from, and I find a new favorite every time I look. It’s challenging, and has probably given us a few gray hairs, but decisions must be made!

Our pick? The consensus was to choose a yarn that was fitting for the summer season, so we decided that Red Heart Yarn Crème de la Crème would be our best option! This weight 4 yarn is made of 100% combed cotton and is available in a variety of perfectly shaded solid and multi colors (68 to be exact!). DW3 Q&A!

In depth Bios from our

new challengers!

NEW Daily Prize schedule!

See what they had to say

of Frayed Knot received the most votes in Design Wars II for her Sarah Slouch Hat, and was crowned winner of our challenge! I caught up with her for a chat; let’s see what she had to say…

Design Wars (DW): How many “sketches” did you pass before deciding on your winning idea?

Jonna Ventura (JV): I had about 4 sketches and none of

them were the hat. I was testing a cowl pattern for

a fellow designer and thought I would design a

hat to match and give it as a gift to a friend for

Christmas. I loved the design! Played around with

it a bit and after working one up with the RH w/

Wool yarn, I was sold. At first I was afraid it didn't

have the "it" factor for DW but I'm so glad I went

with it!

DW: What has been your favorite aspect of being a DW

competitor?

JV: Getting to know the other designers! I love to see

what inspires them because they have been such a

huge inspiration to me. It is also a learning

experience and everyone is willing to help each

other out. It's more of a community than a "war".

DW: If you had to choose a theme for the next DW,

what would you choose? Why?

JV: HMMM...theme...If I had to choose a theme I think I

might go with something like "Great things come

in small packages". Since I don't normally make

things that are small and cute, I think it would

push my boundaries AND be a lot of fun!

was our Red Heart Yarns prize pack winner in Design Wars II, and she was kind enough to chat with us, and send some pictures of her stash!

Design Wars (DW): What did you win?

Amanda Rog (AR): 1 tote bag, 1 heart shaped tape measure, 1 heart

shaped yarn cutter, a pkg of yarn needles, 1 crochet hook, 1 set

of knitting needles, 1 stitch counter, and 1 pkg of point

protectors, then there was 1 Crochet Today magazine, 2 Red

Heart books of patterns and 12 skeins of yarn!

DW: What are your top 3 favorite items?

AR: Wow! That's a tough one, I love it all! Lol, But, I would have to

say the sashay yarn, the bamboo handled crochet hook, and the

magazine subscription.

DW: What are you going to make with all that yarn?

AR: I will be making the "got to have it bag" from the Red Heart

pattern with some of the ribbon yarn, some scarves, and I'm

sure lots of hats!
