Dylan Peterson Commits to the BU Terriers

We are very happy to announce that Dylan Peterson has verbally committed to the Boston University Terriers. Dylan has been a great addition to this year's Bantam team, as Coach Travis Rycroft explains: “Dylan Peterson truly is a special kid. Dylan’s on-ice ability is without question incredible however couple that with his off-ice dedication and maturation level is something I personally have never observed from a 14-year-old before. To have the intestinal fortitude Dylan has at the age of 14 to continue to better himself both on and off the ice is

very difficult to teach, so to have that naturally built within himself is such an important ingredient to not only succeed as a hockey player but also in life. Dylan has been nothing but a pleasure to coach.” Dylan, when asked about his decision to verbally commit to Boston University explained: “Boston University has a rich history of developing elite hockey players, with a strong coaching staff and top facilities. I know that they will help me reach my goals; if I went anywhere else, I know I would regret it.” We can not wait to watch Dylan pursue his dreams in the NCAA and beyond.

Halloween

As you may have heard, prior to Halloween there were some fierce competitions at Blyth Academy@CIHA. It began with the much touted Door Decorating Competition. Each group was given the same items with which to transform their door into a ghastly spooky entranceway in under 45mins. It was a frenzy of activity; some groups has solid plans, while others just hoped for the best. Some even sent spies to steal ideas!!! In the end, it was the Table Tennis group that stole the award with their depiction of the Evil Ms Kelly and her staff haunting the lives of the students at CIHA. The following week the club groups got to work on carving pumpkins. Despite, one rotten stinky pumpkin the students designed and carved at breakneck speed. Many original designs were created, but it was the combined efforts of the Art Club under Ms Braid who scooped up the award with their very life like “Trumpkin”.

As October 31st finally descended on us the students and staff arrived at school in all sorts of weird and wacky costumes. The staff went with a Super Hero theme and by all accounts, the female teachers completely upstaged the guys. The student competition was hotly contested with the Individual award going to Dominic Chiasson for his hilarious Sumo Wrestler costume. Two group awards were given out, the

first to Jared Weber, Brad Fortier and Jeremy Vasquez for their depiction of the Purge Boys. Jacob Bjartmarsson, Max Jung and Owen Dunne also won for their impersonation of animals. For their efforts, all the winners were given $10 Walmart gift cards.

Get to Know...Travis Rycroft

For the first of our focus on Blyth Academy @ CIHA Teacher features, we start with grade 8 teacher Travis Rycroft.

After retiring from professional hockey at the age of 28, I decided to follow my lifelong dream of becoming an educator. Growing up I was always intimidated by school and the learning process. It was through hockey that I found confidence and courage to return to school as a mature student. I completed my Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia and was selected as part of the Dean’s Honor Roll.

During my classroom practicum, I had the opportunity to work in several schools throughout Metro Vancouver most notably John Oliver Secondary School where I was fortunate to be invited to work in the school’s alternative education program for at-risk youth. Through this experience, I gained a better appreciation of how unique each student’s learning process is. I know from personal experience that learning does not come easy or quickly for everyone and my goal as an educator at Blyth Academy is to help every student recognize and reach their potential by creating a classroom where we celebrate each other's unique strengths and support each other in areas where growth is required after all education is a team sport.

CIHA Remember

On November 11th CIHA held a Remembrance Day ceremony to remember and reflect together. The ceremony began with students placing poppies on the CIHA Remembers wall. The poppies were labelled with memories of loved ones and things that the students were thankful for. Miss Cumming opened the ceremony and asked us all to use this time to come together and remember all the things that we have to be thankful for. Student representatives from grades 8-12 read poems G8: Jamal George, G9: Tucker Burke, G10: Michael Lenhart, G11: James Clarke, and G12: Jake Jurgeneit. These student representatives were outstanding in their readings and were an example of maturity and thoughtfulness. The ceremony continued with a live stream to Parliament Hill for the two minutes silence, giving us pause to reflect. The ceremony was closed by Mrs Kelly who asked that we all remember the events of the past that have shaped our world today but to also be thankful for all we have and keep the thoughts of our loved ones in the forefront of our minds.

Assignments that Connect to Hockey

Within the English classes this semester, there has been a great effort to connect the skills students are developing in lessons with those on the ice. The Grade 9 and 10 classes created brochures detailing school, hockey and life on campus for their writing to inform assignment. Students were able to gain insight into how word choice, design, and layout can play a large part in effective marketing within the world of hockey.

Grade 11 students were able to put their communicating to instruct skills to the test by guiding Grade 8 Varsity players through a step-by-step process on how to improve either their passing, shooting or skating.

CIHA Players Represent on the International Scene

CIHA would like to congratulate Patrick Larkin for making Great Britains U16 squad. He will be heading to Scotland next month for the Dumfries Cup. We would also like to recognize Gabor Matyas for doing the school proud during his recent tryout for team Hungary. Out of 100 players, he was the last player cut from the U16 team as a 15-year-old. All those selected were 16 and we know he will continue to make the school proud in future tryouts!
