Our research has a clear focus

For more than half a century the brand Dynasylan® has been synonymous withthe investigation, production and appli-cation of silanes. Not just in recent years,but for decades the research departmentfor Dynasylan® has been very focused on its goals.In the interest of our customers, the top priority for our researchers is to makesure that the functional performance and cost-eff ectiveness of our Dynasylan®products are increased simultaneously.

Dynasylan® Multifunctional SilaneSystems™ are created by combining various chemical and technologicalfunctions. The use of Dynasylan® vinyl-oligomers optimizes, for example, boththe manufacturing process and the fi nished product. A particularly highfl ashpoint facilitates the transport, stor-age and use of the coupling agent. Theelectrical properties of the cable are alsosignifi cantly improved. This means thecustomer can cut production costs at thesame time as increasing their competitive advantage.

Silanes must be designed to be safe, non-polluting and non-harmful not just in theend product, but also for the environment and for those involved in their productionand application. This is just one of the aimswe have achieved with Dynasylan® vinyl-oligomers.

Decades of experience with silicon chemistry

For many decades we have been pro-ducing silicon compounds.Continuous improvements in the manu-facture of silicic acid esters and organo-functional silanes have resulted in the constant expansion of this group ofproducts at Evonik. For example, an im-portant milestone was the development of the Dynasylan® HYDROSIL series inthe 1990s. These products, protected by patents, are water-based and nei-ther contain solvents nor generate sol-vents when in use. Thus Dynasylan® Multifunctional Silane Systems™ conform to an extraordinarydegree to the principles of environmen-tal protection.

New molecules, applications and processes

Today, with such innovative energy andlong-term thinking we are way ahead ofthe competition. Revolutionary productsand processes such as organosilane con-densates, special Multifunctional Silane Systems™ or VOC-free (VOC= Volatile Organic Compound) and water-based systems are just some of the highlightsof the world’s most extensive range ofcommercially available organosilanes.By continually fi nding new ways tosynthesize and by minimizing the pro-duction of waste material, manufacturing processes can be constantly optimized.

A strong and comprehensive patent portfolio

Today, Evonik is the market leader in thefi eld of organofunctional silanes and hasmore than 400 patents worldwide, in allof the important industrialized countries. Evonik has an even larger number oftrade marks registered for silanes. Multifunctional Silane Systems™ listamongst the great innovations of recent years. They are created by combiningdiff erent properties from one product orby developing completely new Multifunc-tional Silane Systems™, which produce asilane with new properties. Dynasylan®leads in both fi elds. We develop tailoredsolutions for innovative customer proj-ects, thereby playing a signifi cant role incontributing to the success of new prod-ucts.

Or we develop original MultifunctionalSilane Systems™ such as the one used inDynasylan® 6598. These make it possibleto develop new ways to manufacture cables, pipes and other plastics. With Dynasylan® 6598 it is possible avoid methylglycol as a by-product entirely, atthe same time as achieving unparalleledlevels of hydrophobization in the end prod-uct, which results in signifi cantly improvedelectrical properties for cable compounds.

Multifunctionality. Customized products and new molecules

In many research and high-tech projects, for example the MAGLEV drive technology in the Transrapid, cables manufac-tured with Dynasylan® are used in order to meet very specifi c requirements.

The crosslinking of polyethylenes for ca-ble and pipe compounds, using perox-ide, silanes or irradiation, has been a standard process for decades.

When crosslinking polyethylenes with silanes - the PEX-b procedure - thesealmost literally represent the salt in thesoup – except, though just as important, they are considerably more versatile.There is no doubt that the use of even small amounts of silane guarantees thequick and cost-eff ective crosslinking of polyethylenes.

Only then is the mechanical and thermal stability of pipes and cables certain. Itis important to emphasize again that the silane and polyethylene need to be perfectly matched.Evonik, the market leader in specialtychemical solutions, is the only silanemanufacturer in the world to develop,test and produce silane products of the Dynasylan® brand in close cooperation with its customers, specifi cally designed to fi t their needs. These customers cur-rently have access to almost one hundred diff erent products of the brand family Dynasylan® SILFIN. Furthermore, in many countries Dynasylan® productshave also been offi cially approved for use in drinking water pipes.

The PEX-b crosslinking of polyethylenes enables a three-dimensional, fl exiblecrosslinking of molecules. The wide rangeof Dynasylan® SILFIN products is designedto work in all kinds of polyethylenes.

Strength, fl exibility and the ability to resist external infl uences depend onthe mechanical properties of a structure, which are the result of the cohe-sion of all components. For cables and other plastics, the coupling be-tween organic and inorganic components represents a particular challenge because their diff erent molecular structures are not compatible.

Dynasylan® silanes demonstrate a molec-ular structure which contains an organicand an inorganic group. They link withall sorts of diff erent polymers and fi llermaterials on a molecular basis. This fea-ture has made silanes the unchallengednumber one for the coupling of organicwith inorganic materials.

The coupling between the organic poly-ethylene and the inorganic fi ller is guaran-teed with Dynasylan® silanes.

With the brand Dynasylan®, Evonik hasthe widest range of products off ered byany silane manufacturer. This means that Dynasylan® customers can fi nd the bestpossible match of fi ller for whicheverduroplast, thermoplast or elastomer is being used.

As the only major manufacturer of organofunctional silanes, Evonik off erstrading unit sizes ranging from 25 kgdrums to 20 ton bulk containers, avail-able also with customized fi lling volumes on request. Because of our global pres-ence, we are familiar with local environ-mental protection and toxicological regu-lations in numerous countries. Thisknowledge eases the way for many com-panies who are starting up local produc-tion operations.

This customer-focused cooperation notonly applies to the development of new Dynasylan® Multifunctional SilaneSystems™. We also grow with the needsof our customers: We are the only largemanufacturer of organofunctional silanesto off er every packaging option, from25 kg containers to a bulk system avail-able worldwide, or even special fi llingquantities according to customer specifi -cations.

Our global presence means that we have specifi c knowledge of product registra-tion and environmental protection inmany countries. We support our cus-tomers in security questions and use ourknow-how to help them realize cost-saving potentials.

Many of our ideas for new products orapplications originated in projects whichwe planned out and put into practicewith our customers. To support this dia-logue, there are Evonik silane specialistsavailable at the many diff erent units for development and business in Europe,Asia and North America. In products of our brand familyDynasylan® HYDROSIL, any VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) have been removed during production in a con-trolled procedure specially developedby Evonik.
