Words to Know

Jim Henson: Creador de títeres by Spencer Thomas

Build BackgroundRead the title to the children and talk with them about what they see in the cover photograph. Encourage children to use their knowledge of puppets and Sesame Street characters to think about the book. Ask questions such as the following: ¿Por qué les gusta jugar con títeres?

Introduce the TextGuide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Here are some suggestions.

Page 2: Explain that this book talks about Jim Henson, the man who made the Plaza Sésamo puppets.

Ways of ThinkingAs you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points.

• People helped Jim Henson make his puppets.

• Making art is a wonderful thing to do.

• Jim Henson’s puppets make kids happy.

• The writer uses different language on each page to make the story interesting.

• The photos show what the writer is describing.

Choices for SupportFluencyHave children read a passage from the text and demonstrate that they can quickly and automatically solve most words in a way that supports fl uency.

Phonemic Awareness and Word WorkProvide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities:

• Listening Game Materials: pairs of words. Have children listen for words that begin with the same sound. Have them raise their hands if the words begin with the same sound, and keep their hands in their laps if the beginning letter is different. Say pairs of words, such as the following: títere, tío; oso, oreja; hizo, correr; grande, triste.

• Build Sentences List these high-frequency words from the book: Él, hizo, gustaba, un, una, grande, chico. Make a separate list of these story words: abrigo, rana, títeres, arte, cerdita, oso, perro. Have children say sentences using the high-frequency words and one of the story words. Have them choose one sentence to write and illustrate.

Writing About ReadingCritical ThinkingRead the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 9.9 and guide them in answering the questions.

RespondingRead aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities.

Target Comprehension SkillText and Graphic Features

Target Comprehension Skill Tell children that words and pictures work

together in a book to help readers better understand the text. Model how to think about the way that words and pictures work together:

Think Aloud

Practice the SkillHave children share an example of photos in other books that show what the author’s words are describing.

Writing PromptRead aloud the following prompt. Have children draw and write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6.

Draw a picture of a puppet that Jim Henson made. Choose one of your favorites.

Write something the puppet would say.
